Cliché still on the non-charges service. Opay offers that already.

Truth be told, 98% of fintech in Nigeria are all remixing the same thing.

What’s different is just the name and branding.

However the positive side aspect of it all is that, they can never be enough of them to cater for the growth in the population of those utilizing tech for their daily transactions.

Programming / A Thread To Discuss All Things Fintech In Nigeria by y3mi(m): 7:45pm On Apr 04, 2023
Let's discuss all things fintech and stuff related to this fast unraveling industry.

Personally, I've been working on a financial solution that I have been under conception since 2014! Over the year I’ve honed it through a lot of fine-tuning to which as at 2019 where I register it domain, I've tirelessly been working out the kinks as to how integrate it with what I call a BASB platform.

Far evolved past ideation and conception as it’s now entering pre-development stage for a tactical reason.

It is far from the regular paytech types that are sprouting up everywhere, mine is more of finscrow (Financial Service based on Escrow) and genuinely innovative. I may share more on it as the thread grows on.

This is good. I'm happy for them. But the real question for those of us with interests in tech VC is, at what equity are these funding rounds converted to?

Y Combinator exchanges $500,000 (+ addons) for 7% equity.
They raised $1.5 million earlier on. Now they raised $3 million.

How much equity have they let go? With that many rounds ( which is still low-bar) and VCs, what's the controlling stake for the founders?

Now the last part is what worries me. if only tech bootstrapping were easy...
Many a times I’ve ponder - What’s really the catch to all the VCs and Angel Investors. Thanks for underlining what should be of concerns to the founders with potential business idea and model with innovative core, can we have a thread where we can discuss this more at length ?

Is it safe to say to kill the tech ecosystem in Nigeria you just make Stripe available there & PayPal fully functional & then get rid of the petty financial policies and it game over ??
Unless you don’t mind clarifying better, I would not think the second largest fintech powerhouse in the USA would want to be readily available in Nigeria when they already own PayStack so to speak, as for PayPal, we (the legit innocent) are still feeling the whiplash from their decision to have Nigeria expunged from their list of available countries, a prolonged the whiplash from years of abuse of their service from Nigerian yawoo boys in the early 2000 to late 2000s. No thanks to First Bank who brought them back in, but with limited feature where we can only pay out and not still able to receive funds. I don’t see PayPal revoking that anytime soon.

Romance / Re: What Are You Doing With A Man That Can't Meet Your Needs? by y3mi(m): 11:54pm On Mar 12, 2023
pansophist:
op, if you mean this post in the context of marriage, then of course you made a whole lot of sense. The worth of a man is in the provision, to be able to take care of his family. But if it is in the context of a mere relationship, then no, he owes you nothing. And also, feel free to assume your duty as a woman only after marriage. So no sex, kissing, and domestic duties. It's fair that way.

In my book, a vulcanizer that has his own self-contain, who earns honorably, and who can take care of a woman reasonably is responsible in my book. Lots of men can start a family, but the expectations of women these days are very high, making men feels like they are not good enough.

If you want an iPhone 14 pro that costs over a million, then a banker earning 300k monthly won't be able to afford it for you. Does it mean he is not responsible again? The issue here is the disconnect between women's desires and the reality of things.

Women's needs are not proportional to realities on the ground, but exponential. So for example, a man earning 200k naira monthly in the context of Nigeria is above average, but lots of women will consider him poor, that he is not good enough for them. This is the lack of proportionality I mean.

If both of you live modestly, his salary should be enough, and if you are not lazy, you can make it easier if you work as well. Also, the way women analyze the financial depth of a man's pocket, the man is also analyzing if this girl is a gold digger.

There is this story in the bible where Jesus appreciated the offering of a poor widow and rejected the ones by the wealthy men simply because it came from a good heart, and it was over-proportionate to what she had. She basically gave all.

In my book, a vulcanizer that gives you 50k, but earns 100k a month is a hero, compare to a yahoo thief that buys you a phone worth millions. But in this Nigeria, many girls will choose the yahoo boy over the vulcanizer.

So it is not black and white. Men are trying. The average man wants to be loved and will do everything to get that taste of a woman's warmth who loves him purely. A bit of empathy is needed for men.

For men, the love they experience dries as they grow older. So for example, a girl of 16 years will be receiving love and attention from multiple channels, such as parents, toasters, boyfriends, brothers, and so forth.

A boy of 16 probably gets love only from his parents, no girls are lining up to take him out. If he asks a girl, then love in form of cash will go from him to her. And the older he gets, his parents will become his dependents. Meanwhile, a girl will marry and her husband continues showering her love from where everybody stopped. But of course, after she has selected the best of men in all her charity givers.

But even if a man marries his choice, he still has to spend heavily. She will probably love the kids more than him, and her love is only as valid as how long he can be useful materially. This is the reality of men. Even in these circumstances, men still accepted it. The least women can do is to match their desire with the realities on the ground, this is Nigeria, not Netherlands. We are broke in this country.

Whatever.

Bro you are 100 % on point!

It doesn't get anymore elaborate than that. Just like nairaland has moderation features that are not accessible to users that are not moderators, you can add a feature to a web app that's not accessible to users by simply restricting it with conditions or not displaying it.
I appreciate you referencing the moderating functions of Nairaland as been only available to users whose privilege has been upgraded to moderator status.

So therefore, if a particular function can be coded as an integral part of a web/mobile app source code, no matter how complex, it can at any point in time be manipulated with codes to remain inaccessible to its users.

Is this more of a front-end or back-end work process, perhaps both ?

I hereby respectfully ask veteran coders in the house. Would it be possible to build a function into a web app in such a way that it wont be revealed i.e. readily accessible until much later i.e. already coded as part of the source code of a website or mobile app, a feature is built into the source code land page but is not visibly accessible until the coder decide to make it available for its users to make use of.

Example, we all know Nairaland doesn’t have a chat function or dislike button, two features which can be build into it anytime but let’s assume it has already been part of it from inception but was decided to be unlock or made available now. That’s the question I’m asking.

I am so tired of typing right now.

I have been in touch with GTBank Help Desk and Access Bank customer care were very helpful on this.

I wish I could share in detail how everything went.

Yes sir,
There are things which Jiji and every other Nigeria buying/selling platforms can implement into their systems that would completely erase the possibility of attempting to conduct scam on their platform.

Business / Re: Why Jiji Should Be Avoided At All Cost - A Serious Something. by y3mi(m): 1:34pm On Oct 28, 2022
Onyeka90210:
Admin, no one is blaming you
I have never seen jiji advertise as the safest platform.
It has always been like that, scammers have always been lurking there, they knew that and informed the public not to “pay in advance”.
“Do not pay in advance, for whatever reason or else you’ll be scammed”
You paid in advanced, you got scammed
I don’t see how it’s jijis fault you get scammed, there are scammers on all p2p consumer sites.
If you are to compare jiji to a foreign p2p site
It shouldn’t be ebay, jiji is more like offer up.
Which are both risky.
Paying in advanced on jiji is same as paying in advanced on Facebook marketplace or olist, or even offer up, you can be scammed.
Same time there’s a location feature which you can see only adverts in your location on jiji, to save the stress of waybill.
I guess you just accepted the terms and conditions without reading through.
On jiji you’re on your own
Jiji doesn’t give a hoot about buyers or sellers
You could get scammed as a buyer,
Same time your goods gets stolen as a seller
Which is a bad thing, I guess, but they made that known.
You flawed the agreement and then come to defame them.
I will suggest if you’re not thick skinned, stick to Jumia, Konga, Amazon, EBay and AliExpress.
They have both buyer and seller protection
I’m not supporting scam, but I have been using jiji for about 7 years for both buying and selling, and it has been smooth. So I think you should modify your topic to “you got scammed on jiji”
Not “jiji should be avoided”
Well, If you’re not sharp then it’s safe to say you should avoid jiji at all cost

My friend, you guys should stop absolving this platform from been responsible for the buyers protection like we have it on eBay which I’ve been using as far back 2001. Your response indicate that you didn’t read the scenario I painted up there where I said what if you were a seller despite the fact I’m the buyer in this case and you shipped to a potential buyer who you agree with to Pay-On-Delivery and he for whatever reasons decide not to buy anymore or chose to never shows up (maybe Sport Bet took the money he originally intends to pay for the goods by the time it came) and cite that it is not what he ordered or whatever reasons. The Seller would have to pay again for the return of the product back to his state. I hope you see the point I’m trying to bring out to prove how Pay-On-Delivery is limited in securing the interest of the seller.

Why I said Jiji innocently enables this frauds to be perpetrated is because they just simply connect visitors who are potential buyers with all kinds of sellers whose phone contacts are easily revealable by the click of a button. Many of which are genuine and others who are outright scammers, defaulters and all sorts. Why should the numbers of ads posters be concealed in the first place when it can easily be revealed by one click ?

The other gentleman who recommend one should always one platform to the other simply forgot that there are items and product that can be listed on a particular platform and won’t be available in any other. There are things you can get on eBay or Craiglist but you can never see it listed on Amazon as they all cater for a different kind of product based on their trading structure.

Before I contacted this particular seller on Jiji for this item, I have not only ransacked the whole of Konga, Jumia and other minuscule Nigeria shopping website. The item as I’ve said is not a commonly demanded product so only few selected stores that do have it, and as such this seller has it on his Jiji platform posted there initially at N30K before later changing it to N42K.

When I come out with my own eCommerce platform and Payment System. Buyers and Sellers are equally protected with my S.L.A.P. technovation which I’ve conceived as far back as 2014!

eBay and PayPal used to be easily accessible to Nigerians back in the early 2000s with no features locked. Yawu boys in Lagos ruined it all. They perpetrated lots of frauds on Paypal until Nigeria was removed from their platform. We are all still suffering from that negative effect till date even after First Bank pleaded on our behalf and brought them back again but with no ability to receive funds.

Enough of all these scam scam scam.

@victorogundepo @Onyeka90210
I thank you both for your suggestion.

However you're both the fourth and fifth persons trying to fault-blame the buyer for dealing while absolving the platform from their responsibility.

Kindly look at the scenario where you as a seller in Lagos placed a very expensive and fragile item on my eCommerce platform and someone who is in need of it saw it and decided to buy it but lives far away in Kaduna, now this is where the Pay-On-Delivery concept is very flawed is that, once you parceled the item as WayBill to the buyer in Kaduna who inspect it at and he decides he no longer needs it, or it wasn't as advertised for probably been color-blind or something, he then rejects it, and no payment is furthered, the dispatcher is instructed to take it back to WayBill agent and the item is shipped back to the Seller, now my question to you Sir, is.... would you honestly be comfortable to incur the shipping cost of sending it up to Kaduna and back, while risking the fragility of the item cracking during transit?

Pay-On-Delivery is only good to the extent where the item meets the satisfactory need of the buyer. It is disadvantageous to the seller as unserious buyers with mischievous and window-shoppers spirit can exploit PoD option. If you try to purchase something on eBay, it's either you get what you see or you don't buy and that's because eBay platform worked on ensuring that their platform evolved on a system that enables legitimate transactioning from legit users, majorly focusing on protecting the BUYERS (not to say there aren't scammers who sells on there as I've also experienced one of such many years ago on eBay).

Bro, Nigeria shouldn't always be an exception in something the whole world are enjoying. People buy and sell stuffs on eBay, Loot, Kijiji, Etsy, Amazon, OfferUp (formerly LetGo), etc without no issues. Why should some people always come and spoil something good for everybody else because of their greed ? Again, I blame Jiji for this. Their platform indirectly enables this. They only care about the money they realize from paid ads.
