I don't think she did, at least not judging by the way some posters on here are copying already successful companies. Look, there is nothing wrong with a little nibble here and there. What's wrong is copying verbatim and expecting to make it big. You said it all when you talked about carving out a niche for herself. That, my friend, is what makes her unique.

Every business must have a Unique Selling Point. Again, judging by many ventures here (and sadly, I tend to use this board to make a general judgement about the Nigerian web industry as a whole (**NOTE: I am saying generally speaking**)), all I see is copy copy and borrow borrow. Heck! I even discovered via google that someone on here copied one of my "works", which is why I seldom advertise what I do anymore.

For those who are looking for blogging motivation, including how much to charge for your blogs (eventually)...not copy copy o (because u will NEVER make it by copy copy), but motivation:

WebmastersRe: What Are The Challenges Of Web Hosting Business In Nigeria by yawatide(f): 12:15pm On Sep 02, 2012
I don't own a web hosting business but I think 5 words can answer this question for everybody - Lack of uninterrupted power supply cool
WebmastersRe: Website Review by yawatide(f): 12:56pm On Sep 01, 2012
1) Now the background is too white. Think of using a subtle background to complement your current colors, like sky blue. Check colorcombos.com for ideas
WebmastersRe: Website Review by yawatide(f): 12:21pm On Aug 31, 2012
1) Get rid of the background. I personally find it hard to read the content and worse still, making it fixed doesn't make it easier for me (and perhaps others)

2) Get rid of the news flash on the side. Worse case, make it static. Too much animation is a distraction to me (and perhaps others)

3) Contact form says I haven't entered a code but alas! I see no code on the page. Or has the background image made it invisible?

4) Reduce the size of the header image. You need to make as much content as possible above the fold. All those with a small resolution will see is a large image, not to mention that in your locale, people are paying dearly for bandwidth

Good luck!

mitey, I concur.

OP:
Maybe you should have major categories (as links) listed on the home page, and maybe with a photo count for each section. Then I click a link that takes me to a page that has maybe 4 or 5 photos for that section and a "more" link to the rest.

Your site reminds me of why I don't like visiting facebook at times - na so so scroll scroll, to infinity.
WebmastersRe: How Do I Charge this client? by yawatide(f): 10:57pm On Aug 29, 2012
A content management system (drupal, joomla, etc) would be your best bet here. Believe me, you don't want to code 40 pages, literally. The maintenance alone, especially if you will not be the one doing it, will be harrowing.

I would say just for the pains involved in customization, 300K minimum, which is a price that allows for no more than 50K negotiated reduction.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: How Do I Charge this client? by yawatide(f): 3:29am On Aug 27, 2012
In addition to the calls for seeing reqs, avoid charges based on number of pages or amount of changes or per hour costs. These can get tricky. Just offer one bulk rate (which of course for you would be your hourly rate * the number of hours you expect to spend on the project, less any applicable discounts...again, the client doesn't have to know what you are telling them is technically based on per hour charges). Same applies to monthly maintenance costs.

Personally, I try to average about $50/hour by the time everything is said and done and the website has been handed over to the client. In other words, as long as I average this amount, it doesn't matter whether I spend 5 minutes on the project or 5 hours or 500 hours.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: Who Fit Teach Me Web Design by yawatide(f): 1:16pm On Aug 26, 2012
OP:
You need to learn to crawl before you walk. Moreover, in school, you never asked your teachers to teach you calculus V when you don't even know common trigonometry. My point: If you want someone to teach you, you have to be humble and patient enough to learn the "A" of it all before the other letters. That means starting off with the traditional "Hello world". If I were to offer to teach you, I would probably turn you down due to your over-ambitiousness. No offense.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: HTML5 Geolocation by yawatide(f): 2:58am On Aug 26, 2012
There is an alternative to everything. The problem is finding it, abi? tongue

I remember a long time ago, buying a book that uses google API to do something similar. Perhaps you should try that. All you would need, I believe, is a google API key. The process is the same - using coordinates/entered data, your position on the globe is determined.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: HTML5 Geolocation by yawatide(f): 12:15pm On Aug 25, 2012
Thanks for sharing the code, which happens not to be the problem.

So this reminds me of a friends smartphone at work (in the US). Whenever he is at home, the weather app gives him the right zip, city and weather but when at work (20 miles away) and within the office's network (I work for a telecom and his phone service is the same as the telecom's), his weather app on the phone says he is in a city 2500 miles away tongue

After some ground work, he narrowed it down to the fact that while at work and with his wifi turned on, he was actually using bandwidth from work that was actually getting "its signal" from a server at another location, hence the false reading.

Maybe this is what is happening here. Either way, very weird behavior.

2) Where are you, in relation to Lagos?
WebmastersRe: How Do I Charge this client? by yawatide(f): 7:20pm On Aug 24, 2012
You can't charge per page, IMHO because the effort involved in coding the "about us" page isn't the same in coding the "contact" page that has a form. You need to give one price. I at least need to have an idea of the requirements to make a call. As far as maintenance is concerned, I usually charge per month. The hour thing can get a little interesting, if you know what I mean.

Good luck!

WebmastersRe: How Do I Install My Joomla Templates And Extention by yawatide(f): 5:15am On Aug 20, 2012
^^^^It depends - sometimes you do have to unzip the zip. How you will know whether or not to unzip first? If you try to install and you get an error that says (paraphrasing), "...xml file missing..." then you know that the xml file (which drives the installation) is not in the root of the zip but inside the zip of the zip (sorry for the confusion). In that case, you need to first unzip the zip then install the unzipped file.

Good luck!

WebmastersRe: Paid And SEO Traffic - Which Is Better? by yawatide(f): 1:29am On Aug 19, 2012
The most honest answer: A mixture of both.

You typically want to start off with both paid and natural. As time goes on, and especially if your budget doesn't allow for it, you learn what works best for you in the paid, as you gradually wean yourself off the paid and apply the exact same strategy to your natural.

Good luck!

USArmy,

My concern still stands, though you do have a point on my first issue raised - why can't we be the ones that the chinese and russians and americans copy from? Why do we always have to be the "follow follow" and "copy copy" people?

Of what point is an igbo social network? where is the originality? How many people who actually speak igbo understand it enough to know what will be going on? Which igbo will be used (central, etc etc)?

There are bigger fish to fry in the world of technology. Let's stop "follow follow" and come up with something unique.
WebmastersRe: Airtel Official Website Internal Server Error (500) by yawatide(f): 12:42pm On Aug 18, 2012
^^^ I actually wasn't referring to individual/groups of developers but corporations. The former couldn't possibly afford the infrastructure involved.

For a corporation such as airtel not to have such speaks in particular to those doing the hiring and to the people actually working there for not being able to convince the stakeholders to implement such.

WebmastersRe: Airtel Official Website Internal Server Error (500) by yawatide(f): 12:20am On Aug 18, 2012
@omni
That is why any corporation worth its salt has at least 3 operating environments:
Development server: Basically the sandbox where you can do whatever you want

Staging server: This is as close to the next environment that you will get. Any code on here will be going to the next stage so it has to be as free of bugs as possible

Production server: The "live" environment that customers see.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, problems are caught in the first 2 environments before they get to production.
