If this is true (I can't see ads on my end. Maybe it is location-specific), I see no problems with a non-profit organization placing ads on their site to raise funds, as long as (and this is where Nigeria wouldn't factor, sadly) it is within the laws of the land where the organization was established. They need money, begging from individuals isn't working, so do they close shop or stay in business, again, within the law. I am pretty sure that if we were a fly on their walls, we would have overheard them discussing placing ads on their site, as part of their overall strategy, should all else fail. I remember vividly when I launched a news site 5 years ago. I went around asking (and then begging) for people to advertise on there. No responses at all. I was faced with either shutting it down (it takes time, which is money, to update the site every day) or seeking other sources of revenue, within the law. Guess which avenue I took? To "punish" my audience, I place 3 ads per page - top, bottom and right column. So far, no complaints - based on web stats, the site grows by 100% at least every year. Make dem do wetin work for dem, jare ![]() |
and when does it go live? Be that as it may, I think the light green/red/orange combo isn't looking good. You might want to go to a site like colorcombos.com for good color combos |
seconded! |
Firstly, you need to change your mentality. You don't start a website for the purpose of making money. You create something unique and will have a huge followership. Once the loyalty is there, current users invite new users. Then and only then do you hope to make money. |
Maharapta, woria! ![]() Nice to know you are from Ethiopia. Come to the Mother of Africa - Nigeria. Plenty places abound everywhere. I do get your point/question though - I wish we had a Multinational training company of sorts, one that offers standardized training, irrespective of location. I too will be waiting for someone to answer this question. |
The GEJ one is pretty cool ![]() |
The best place is in timbuktu, next to that their university ![]() Seriously though, finding the best place in West Africa (and we know that you wouldn't go there anyway, if it weren't in Nigeria) is a tall order. Start local - seek a place in your locale |
I have an issue with something am working on. I have used an image as a background on a page with opacity on it, but the content in the container doesn't show fine. The content in the container shows fine for me there, based on the screenshot |
CMS is for sites that are updated on a regular basis, by (preferably) non-techie folks. If whatever site you want to work on doesn't meet this key criteria, I am afraid what you will be doing is akin to using a sledgehammer to kill a fly...literally. The way I learned to use Joomla was: 1) Download the joomla manual at joomla.org 2) Install the default template 3) Look at the code in the template, modify it, see what it does and modify again, till i get it to do what i want it to do Yes, you can use whatever text editor of your choice to modify your joomla templates. good luck! |
^^^Come one man! Why did you bother posting your question if you aren't done. A suggestion: You can still post a partial page, even if it is dummy content with that background. Based on your description, we can't help without seeing something. Finally, you should seriously look at the concept of progressive enhancement. Websites don't have to look 100% the same across the board. I mention this cos i notice you have some webkit- and ie-specific css code above. good luck! |
^^^and so that others can learn from it, what exactly did you do to fix the issue? |
I believe (don't quote me on this) NL has a 2MB file limit, irrespective of extension. So yep, just like you would upload a video to youtube first and then post the link here, upload the file(s) to a place like dropbox (or any other) and then post the link to the file here. good luck! |
So, I am thinking that the actual issue at hand here is the number of characters and not the justification for using a particular approach. Of course, there are many ways to skin a cat. I will ask again: ^^^ Have you actually counted the number of characters b/w Dual's DIV clear, my BR clear and your code above? What say you? |
^^^ Have you actually counted the number of characters b/w Dual's DIV clear, my BR clear and your code above? |
In announcing a fix to the problem, OP said: I have fixed the problem. It ended up being a "path" issue. I didn't know that apart from the setting pahe, there was a column in the database that had a different path from the location of the site. So, i was busy updating another website. In offering a possible solution, one of the things I said: I also, on a project last year, I would upload a particular file many times but nothing would happen. After hours of troubleshooting, I discovered the problem: I had originally put the file in one folder, but since i was including it in many places, I moved it to an includes folder but was still uploading modifications to the first location angryIiiiinteresting ![]() |
^^^ ROFLMAO! LWKMD!! |
I haven't. Have you checked the permissions of your files? I also, on a project last year, I would upload a particular file many times but nothing would happen. After hours of troubleshooting, I discovered the problem: I had originally put the file in one folder, but since i was including it in many places, I moved it to an includes folder but was still uploading modifications to the first location ![]() If none of the above applies, you may need to contact your web host. Good luck! |
In my case, many people (in particular, Nigerians) were staying clear of doing websites for Nigerians because among other reasons: They don't pay well, they don't pay on time, they ask for far more than they pay you for, etc. I decided to buck the trend and go to the Nigerian community for precisely the very reasons others ran away. Sure, I have had a few bad customers and it was very slow at first but eventually it picked up. I also learned from "the other side" and found out that they too had been victims of "our people" and so didn't exactly trust me either. I thus set about to prove to them that there are Nigerians who can be honest, while at the same time educating them on why it isn't in their best interest to pay me a low rate and why they need a professional to handle their website. I even have had a few ask me, "Are you sure you are a Nigerian? I mean, the typical Nigerian I know doesn't act the way you do." I figured I would do my best to dispel the myth and by the time the competition comes along, I would have established myself as the person to go to for websites in the community. Now, after 7 years doing freelancing and over 75 sites, I can proudly say that: 1) 80%+ of those sites belong to Nigerians 2) 99% of those sites were based on referrals from my Nigerian clients I hope this helps. |
1) It would be nice to get a link to the site so one can see the code for themselves 2) If you used a float, Dual's solution will work. If you used a combination of absolute and relative positioning, then apply a high z-index to that first DIV 3) Dual core, don't suffer from divitis. Use <br class="clear" /> instead. Besides divitis, it is also less code. Considering we do a lot of clearing these days and considering the Nigerian (mostly mobile) environment, the less code does add up over time ![]() |
Do what I did - look around you for areas that people are running away from...then run right into it, full swing ![]() People will say you are crazy but hey, you end up keeping all to yourself, as opposed to the slim pickings that everyone else is going for. Good luck! |
I don't mind at all. If possible, I would rather review a graphical mock up first, then the html Good luck! |
You haven't but you sure have started generating a buzz. Nice marketing, whether you know that is what you've done or not ![]() |
I am not a moderator but it appears to me that you just advertised your site officially ![]() |
Meebo, the chat and publishers tools company that Google acquired for roughly $100 million, is going to see most of its products shut down next month. That includes Meebo Messenger, the sharing widgets and mobile apps. The one major product that will keep running is that Meebo Bar. (Yes, that one.) Haters aside, Meebo Bar does actually generate some meaningful revenue for publishers, but it sometimes irks visitors with ads that pop up from the bottom, left-hand side of the page. All of the products, except for the bar, will go down on July 11. Also, meebo messenger will shut down beginning July 11 http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/09/meebo-product-shutdown/ |
Yes, before I write any proposal, I always have a conversation about what the client wants, any sites they would like to model theirs after, when they want the site done, if they will need a logo, if they will want me to do site updating and maintenance, etc. It is then and only then that I can know how much to charge. As I tell them, "in order for this to be a win-win situation, you need to help me so I can in turn help you" |
I thought DHTML had "retired" ![]() That shouldnt be a problem , media queries are currently supported on all browsers, all web browsers have supported this feature right from their initial release (except the prodigal child : IE; however IE 9 now supports it).The above statement funny small small, he he. Poster is arguing for responsive design and gives valid reasons for it (granted it can be taxing on devices like smartphones and feature phones as the browsers have to do calculations each time, say, the orientation changes and for countries like Nigeria where bandwidth is at a premium, this could add up, time-/resource-wise....but I digress) but then says it is supported in ALL browsers except the very ones that Nigerians (as in non-techies) use for the most part. For consistency, I would probably argue in favor of a mobile framework, like jQuery Mobile and maintain a separate base for mobile and desktop. Depending on what OP is trying to accomplish, I would say this approach is less "messy". All the same, I think this is a digression. It's a good post but belongs to a thread of its own and not here. |
^^^Man, sorry o. I have been very busy of late. The few times I did come on, I didn't chat with even 1 person so I got discouraged. For you, I will endeavor to come on again on a daily basis ![]() I should be online in 3 or so hours. |
^^^he he. Just in time for election ![]() |
That's the spirit! ![]() Don't forget maintenance and to convince your clients that since it is a campaign site, it is best for it to be updated daily, as opposed to not doing anything once it launches. Personal Story Time: Prior to the 2011 elections, I was approached to build a site for a gubernatorial candidate in Nigeria. I sent in a bid for 300K, thinking it was too high in the first place. I was called by an insider who said when my bid was discussed, though they liked my proposal and were leaning towards me, they thought I wouldn't be the best person for the job and actually suspected my credentials. Why? Based on price - my bid was the lowest and I was advised to stay in line with the average - around 800K. So what did I do? I upped my bid to 800K ![]() I didn't get the job, in part because of nepotism but my point for this post is that since the site launched (I even did the non-nigerian thing and contacted the developer, congratulated him on a wonderful job (granted it was a jomsocial template, it was a good job nonetheless. I mean, not everyone is creative enough to use a template such that they modify it and make it better) and wished him the best), up until as we speak, the site was, and has never been updated even once. Soon, web hosting will expire and the site will be gone forever. I bet you it was never discussed (I included that in my own proposal). So again, look at adding the following services: maintenance, and social networking campaigans. Good luck! |
^^^Dude, no one has a crystal ball to know what kind of site will be popular then. For all we know, it could be a site that takes your bath, brushes your teeth and wipes your "netherlands" after you "do it" ![]() On a serious note sha, no one knows but hey, it is up to folks like you to define that. I mean, why can't the next best thing for 7 billion people on this planet not come from guru01? ![]() Good luck! |
