WebmastersRe: Joomla! For Or Against by yawatide(f): 11:17am On Nov 17, 2010
Depends on what the site is for:

CMS stands for Content Management System. I take those words literally. In other words, I use it for sites where the owner has no coding background and intends to update the site on his/her own on a regular/frequent basis (think newspaper website). Note also that I said "where the owner" and not "where I". In other words, it is for the owner. Joomla as you may have come to discover, has a low learning curve and hence is suitable for such people.

If you want to code a 5-page regular website, I would say it is overkill - time to install, set up and customize in this case doesn't justify the effort.

So again, it depends.
WebmastersRe: Multilingual Website Development by yawatide(f): 8:17pm On Nov 16, 2010
yeah iv seen that and though I haven't used it, I would recommend it highly. Again, tis not always a good idea to display generic plugins in an obvious manner on a professional-looking website that strives for uniqueness
WebmastersRe: Facebook Email by yawatide(f): 5:21pm On Nov 16, 2010
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/15/facebook-email-addresses-_n_783697.html#s182605

Zuckerberg outlined three features that will define Facebook's new offering, which Zuckerberg described as "the way the future should work": Seamless messaging (users can chat with people through whatever medium they choose, be it SMS, email, or IM), conversation history ("see everything you've discussed with each friend as a single conversation"wink, and a social inbox for "filtering exactly the messages you want to see."

"This is not an email killer," Zuckerberg said. "This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it."

Facebook's latest evolution of Messages ties in multiple forms of communication--SMS, IMs, email--from Facebook and other platforms to allow users to communicate in real-time, on-the-go through whichever messaging tool they prefer. "You decide how you want to talk to your friends: via SMS, chat, email or Messages. They will receive your message through whatever medium or device is convenient for them, and you can both have a conversation in real time," Facebook wrote in a blog post

Facebook will be rolling the product out over the coming months, initially via invite-only. All Facebook users will eventually be offered "@facebook.com" email addresses that match their public usernames, although they will have the option not to have an "@facebook.com" email account.

Facebook's Andrew Bosworth noted, "The system is definitely not email," adding, "We've it modeled more after chat."

Zuckerberg called email "slow" and also emphasized that the new product is "not email." "We don't think modern messaging system will be email," he noted, saying that he believes seven characteristics that we will come to define "next generation" messaging: seamless, informal, immediate, personal, simple, minimal, and short.

WebmastersRe: Facebook Email by yawatide(f): 1:20pm On Nov 16, 2010
Sure but again, speaking for me, I won't bite. Most likely they will have mashups on there that will enable you to interface all your emails in one place, which IMHO is a very scary deal.

This is what will happen: In order to stir interest, ala gmail style, they will first make it by invitation only thus causing your mouth to water tongue

Again, I am mouthing out loud for myself. Let not my post discourage anyone cool
WebmastersRe: Multilingual Website Development by yawatide(f): 1:18pm On Nov 16, 2010
Dual, yeah, it is a lil tacky to see GT's logo on cnn.com's or even facebook's website.

Don't get me wrong, I have used it on a couple of sites I have done for people but it depends on their "levels" - the more professional the site is, the more likely I go with the server approach.
WebmastersRe: Multilingual Website Development by yawatide(f): 11:27am On Nov 16, 2010
If it is the google translator I know, it is good but for a professional website, i consider it tacky - website visitors see the "google translator" icon placed on the site. To me it is similar to a professional company's website to list a yahoo/gmail address on their contact page.

The best would be to employ a server that supports internationalization.

WebmastersRe: Facebook Email by yawatide(f): 11:23am On Nov 16, 2010
Sorry boys but for me, I have enough email addresses. Nothing special about a facebook one. Sure I can forward all to a catch-all address but why?

I will stick with the ones I have, the same ones I have had for over 10 years. More power to them though.
WebmastersRe: Please I Need An Urgent Help With This Php Script by yawatide(f): 7:39pm On Nov 15, 2010
I think this is what happens when one copies and pastes without full understanding.

From nitation's first solution, the OP should, IMHO, be able to customize the first solution in order to come up with the second solution. I won't fault the OP much though as I, and perhaps others, have fallen for this when they were first reading from an eBook.

OP:
Bear in mind that, though not always the case, code in books may not necessarily be right or compile. If what you are reading isn't working, use google for instance to find a similar solution (for example, google, "PHP and forms"wink and you will find solutions that you can use in lieu of what is in the book you currently have.

good luck!

WebmastersRe: Please I Need An Urgent Help With This Php Script by yawatide(f): 11:38am On Nov 15, 2010
show us the contents of your resultsbyname.php. Chances are that it has no html code in it. While you're at it, visit w3schools.com, the php section and check out how to use PHP with forms.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: , by yawatide(f): 7:18pm On Nov 13, 2010
Similar "body systems" yes but not similar diseases and issues. For example, hypertension and diabetes are more prevalent amongst black people while Asians are more prone to smoke. Speaking of which, if you were really covering everyone, how come I don't see anyone with Asian skin color? huh
WebmastersRe: Multilingual Website Development by yawatide(f): 7:17pm On Nov 13, 2010
For what you seek, you will need the services of a human translator then as you may know, you store the words of the site in respective files (en, sp, etc), then you assign these the similarly named vars and you place those vars on the page in question. Then depending on the server you are using, it will either detect automatically or you can make the user select manually (as in lang=en, lang=sp, etc).
WebmastersRe: , by yawatide(f): 1:34pm On Nov 13, 2010
1) Nice Joomla layout
2) Given your NL location of "9ja", are you telling me the country is full of white people? Most importantly, I guess my questions is, with all those white photos on there, I am finding it hard to believe that anything on that site will benefit me, a black person huh
WebmastersRe: Jquery On Opera Mobile (opera Widgets) by yawatide(f): 1:32pm On Nov 13, 2010
Though I have no answer for this, I do want to add, for the benefit of others, that yes, there is a jquery version for mobile and it's called jqtouch.

WebmastersRe: Dhtml-quiz: Embed The Home Page Of Nairaland Into A Flash Application by yawatide(f): 5:15pm On Nov 12, 2010
As discussed privately, I didn't quite get the question, until I saw the screenshot. Since I don't know flash and flex, I didn't know that they have the iframe element implemented. If it were plain HTML though, that is what I would have said cool
WebmastersRe: The Next Step From Web Development by yawatide(f): 4:07pm On Nov 12, 2010
What is the difference b/w web application and web solution? Doesn't an application, at the end of the day, provide a solution? huh huh

Someone, educate me please.
WebmastersRe: My Website Redesigned, What Do Y'all Think by yawatide(f): 1:54pm On Nov 12, 2010
1) On contact page, why is "get a quote" at the bottom? It would make sense if you made that the focus of your site, perhaps in the right column, globally. Put it where you have "useful websites" and make "useful websites" it's own page. Same reasoning applies to testimonials.

2) No front end validation of contact form. I clicked submit and got a white page (as opposed to a customized page, that resembles the other pages of the site) that says, "thanks for contacting"

3) You should have a portfolio/recent projects page as its own page

General:
I think you should move the important stuff above the fold. At first I was concentrating on the stuff I saw first (1024x768) and only noticed the stuff below when I accidentally shifted my mouse.

I liked the jquery (or whatever it is) plug in you used on the home page though wink
WebmastersRe: What I Need To Know As A Web Designer, Developer And A Master. by yawatide(f): 1:49pm On Nov 12, 2010
technically, none

Literally:
Designer: More of design (as in photoshop and fireworks)
Developer: Less of design (html, css, javascript)
webmaster: More or less a developer

Join in the fun, or lack thereof, here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-549153.0.html

I would focus on reply #1 if I were you wink
WebmastersRe: When Do You Start Callin Urself A Webmaster Or Proffessional by yawatide(f): 10:51am On Nov 12, 2010
web development and web programming. Isn't this same difference? huh

This is why I don't go for titles. What matters is what I have in my brain, that I get paid what I consider well for my industry, and what I leave behind when I leave this earth and not what I call myself.

Even if all you do is code html, you are a programmer, and you are writing software, period. It just so happens it is for the web. Now one can argue if one is more lucrative/difficult than the other. I can go for that but not distinction based on title.
WebmastersRe: The Next Step From Web Development by yawatide(f): 10:48am On Nov 12, 2010
If you really love what you do, you will do it from "cradle to grave", or at least till you reach retirement age. And this covers a situation where you are "big" enough to stop coding and hire people to do it for you. If you are setting a 5-6-or whatever time frame, chances are that you are in it for the money and not the passion, IMHO.

Now, if you ask me where I see web dev in Naija over the next 5-6 years, just as I said in 2005 on here, I will say it again - based on what I am seeing at random, web dev will remain lucrative for the next 20 years (In 2005, I said 20 years but I am upgrading it to another 20 years). Reasons:

1) The El cheapos will drop by the way side, allowing the cream to rise to the top
2) Clients will become more aware of the crap that they have and demand better service
3) Clients will suddently realise that to attract the best, they will pay better.

Hmm, I am literally staring at my inbox and unless I was given a fake version of the very potent igbo that I like to smoke, I am going to insist that you haven't sent it. It's not even in my spam folder.

YIM me (yawatide) and let's go from there. I am available for another 2.5 hours, as at the time of this post.
WebmastersRe: When Do You Start Callin Urself A Webmaster Or Proffessional by yawatide(f): 8:17pm On Nov 11, 2010
Trust nairalanders on the webmaster board:

We will not come up with a killer app that will make us the envy of the world, we won't come up with intellectually stimulating posts but asking a question like, 'When Do You Start Callin Urself A Webmaster Or Proffessional", and you will most likely get 10 pages worth of responses by the time all is said and done.

Geez!
WebmastersRe: I Need A Web Site For My Small Company. by yawatide(f): 8:15pm On Nov 11, 2010
This is a experment to see if I can do business with Nigeria.
Totally uncalled for. Totally turns me off.

How would you feel if, during an interview in your locale, your prospective employer told you that he will hire you as an experiment to see if he can work with (insert color/nationality here) people?

I smell a major "mea culpa" coming up.

They still do a good job of sending internation parcel at a pretty cheap price.
That's good and they are to be commended if true though I will stick with UPS and FEDEX (red star) personally cool
WebmastersRe: Web Design And Morality - Choose One by yawatide(f): 9:41pm On Nov 09, 2010
oh, you are a christian? Even better.

Let me recap:
At the end of the day, even the pharisees agreed with Jesus that if their sheep fell into a pit on the sabbath, they would go into the pit and rescue it Cool
Bottomline: let he without sin cast the first stone. It is up to you to make the call (I won't "pollute" your mind by telling you what I would do). The ball is now firmly in your court. Good luck with your decision.
WebmastersRe: Webmasters In The House: Let's Work Together by yawatide(f): 9:14pm On Nov 09, 2010
Facebook is owned by Mark but he is not the only person that finished the job.
I hear this all the time, so much so that I get angry each time I hear it, no offense.

Drop the idea and be ready to deal with a diverse set of opinions
WebmastersRe: Web Design And Morality - Choose One by yawatide(f): 9:10pm On Nov 09, 2010
Reminds me of a guy in church many years ago who was on the pulpit preaching. After ranting about the evils of smoking, someone asked him if, he had no other job in the world, he would take a job working for st. moritz. He said he would rather remain jobless than work for them.

Also reminds me of taking evolution in school. I made my A in the class answering exactly what the teacher wanted and went back to my beliefs the minute I dropped my pen. I didn't skip the class and get an F just because I am a christian.

My point: It is your choice whether or not you take such a job but have this in mind: In islamic countries where there are pork industries, the muslims pray before and after they enter the factory to work. At the end of the day, even the pharisees agreed with Jesus that if their sheep fell into a pit on the sabbath, they would go into the pit and rescue it cool
