It means I can't tell the intro from the body. I also can't make out what the site is about, again, because of no clear demarcation. Maybe a few photos would have helped. As per "that is what a blog is about", I respectfully disagree as I have seen better. Comments are not the only thing that add to page weight. Besides, if you are that concerned, you should use PHP (or backend language of your choice) comments and not html comments. Also, in the name of readability and maintainability, I don't mind have a large page. Trust me, it will help with reducing your blood pressure in the future. Happy coding! |
Typically, you don't want to jump on the bandwagon of a new product. You want to give it some time to "mature". In the case of joomla, "mature" means giving it time for the extensions to be compatible with the new version ![]() |
Site looks busy as content is everywhere, with no clear demarcation. Also, you need to learn to indent your code, for better readability. Color scheme is fine though. |
Okay so this sounds more like a page snippet that you will include on the page under the conditions of it being a certain date and within a certain time frame. My solution above should suffice then. good luck! |
I would probably go for a back end language (PHP, JSP, etc) for this - check for the date, using the date function and based on the date, display the page. (Baffling) question: Why would you want to do this? Just curious. It seems the about us page and the home page should be separate and on different pages. |
So from OP's perspective, since OP doesn't know how to test, isn't OP saying in essence that OP needs help with debugging? I am getting ahead of myself and becoming more philosophical than I would want to. Ignore what I just wrote. Sorry ![]() |
Weeell, I would disagree somewhat with the assertion that because you code in a language means you should know how to debug it. I say this based on experience. Now, not to hold brief for OP cos he could have just lifted the code somewhere without knowing how it works (just saying, not implying), but it is possible he means he has tried to debug it as best he can but isn't able to narrow down the problem ![]() |
and out of curiosity, what happens if the OP isn't coding with PHP? |

Send an email to a phone number? Technology must really be taking a short cut.LWKMD!! Very nice way to end a very hectic week for me ![]() |
Spam filter: use captcha. If you have a forum or some cms (joomla, drupal, etc), search their extension websites for captcha extensions. Allowing of HTML Tags: I have used CKEditor and so far, haven't had any regrets. Good luck! |
Whenever I want to do a site, I google for at least 20 similar sites and note what I like and don't like. Then I combine all of what I like into one. I also ask the client if there is any website out there and/or color scheme that they would like to use as a point of reference. good luck! |
when will the crappy talk end and the lessons start? Someone asked somewhere, sometime ago, why this section of NL is boring as hell. The off topic banter on this thread is a typical example why. though it might be amusing to newbies and new members, it turns off the old timers and serious ones amongst us. |
playing devil's advocate, what of companies that had a copyright for a particular year but not for subsequent years? Isn't it arguable that they can't lie to the public by stating that their site is still under copyright? ![]() My (devil's advocate) point: The whole "copyright" thing has been abused in my opinion. basically what has most likely happened is when one decided to learn web dev, they noticed that all sites had a copyright and so said to themselves, "so cool to have that copyright logo on a site. My client go think say im dey hammer". That of course explains why some "webmasters" don't think ahead by making the year dynamic. All that they care about is that they got the "job" and dem don clean mouth be dat. if you push them further, they immediately point to google.com and facebook.com, telling you how with minimalistic code those 2 companies are making billions, and they themselves hopelessly hoping that they will make 1% of that. |
[li]A website opens them up to customers not only from the local neighborhood but potentially from around the world. [li]It is possible that a customer in their neighborhood might suddenly decide to check for who has what there and via smartphone, google and find them.[/li]
At the end of the day, everything boils down to exposing your company to a larger customer base while saving money (long term) on what could have been spent in advertising. |

Note the number of posts by OP. FB just got evaulated at $50B. As Americans would say, "it ain't going nowhere" ![]() |
8 literal weeks (56 days), yes but definitely not 8 weekends (16 days). Even at that for the former, you still have to keep yourself marketable by always learning. Good luck! |
I'll actually go further than panadol my friend, if I have to and the cause is just. Therein again lies the difference between you and I. Hmm, a word keeps echoing in my head at the moment. Ah! It's a word that is very apt for the ocassion - Checkmate! |
Trust me now. I even helped you keep the gizzard and the green sac to boot ![]() |
Wow! I need to hook up with your client ![]() |
Blige: Interesting question. So I take it, for example, Isaac Newton shouldn't have asked why that apple fell on his head, right? Maybe I am the way I am because when coming up in the web dev game, I stumbled upon a lot of people who had your attitude who, if I were the type to have low self-esteem, would have made me drop out within my first semester. I didn't even know how to turn on a computer, not to talk about compose an email. I was laughed at constantly and people gave me the look of, "so you don't know how to do something that simple?" Thank God I met people who are like me. We formed a group, did our assignments together and all graduated together. That taught me a valuable lesson. If your above quote makes you feel good, by all means, more power to you. Just remember, intelligence isn't general. Everyone is intelligent in their own area. And oh, what is that famous cliche? Yeah, it's, "the dumbest question is the one that's never asked" Happy new year! |
Blige, not a particularly helpful way to help someone. I assume there were/are things that you didn't/still don't know? OP: Any error that starts with a "5" is a server error. Contact your web host. Granted, yes, you should learn to google, you might want to make certain wiki pages your friend. For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes Good luck! |
Welcome back and happy new year to you and yours. |
Are you just now finding out about the site? At the risk of sounding like I support them (and I don't), it actually looks better than what it used to look like, going back to 2005. Even the webmaster lists a yahoo account as his email address. That should pretty much say it all. I too don't want to buy that they shelled out good money for it. It wreaks of cronyism with very low pay to boot. Furthermore, it tells me, though I could be wrong, that they don't have any serious competition 'cause I know for sure that if I were to have come upon this site first, before seeing the actual magazine, I would never spend my advertising money with them. |
I personally would say 1 week is not enough and that you should realistically look at 4 weeks at the least. Now, don't get me wrong, 4 weeks won't turn you into the baddest coder on earth but it will be enough to get your feet wet as in, maybe you apprentice with someone or you convince someone to let you do their site for free on condition that they promote you to those who ask. Like wine, you get better at web dev with time, via your experiences. Truth be told, our craft is an ongoing process. You are always (and should always) be learning. I for instance have spent the last 2 weeks learning CSS3 and HTML5. I don't know what will be next on the plate for me but for sure, I won't stop learning. It is the only way to remain marketable in today's global economy. good luck! |

Why must I be logged on to facebook to send someone a message? Why not direct SMS and/or email? Methinks the facebook thing is an unnecessary extra step. |
Same with Linda Ikeji's blog. Methinks they are all taking a much deserved xmas/new year's break before starting back up tomorrow. Having said that, it wouldn't have hurt for them to make some sort of advanced notice so that their loyal readership wouldn't be left hanging. |
