Kingsleyumeh007: As a small business owner, nothing motivates like the hope that your enterprise will eventually buy you financial freedom.
Sadly, it's not every entrepreneur that gets to see this reality. It has been reported that only 33% of small businesses make it to their 2nd year anniversary. Although most entrepreneurs set out with foolproof business plans, well researched market analysis and an attitude that could bring down the moon, they seem to loose motivation, money and the enthusiasm to continue as time goes on. It is my opinion that such entrepreneurs got more than they bargained for because they were not prepared for the challenges when the complex responsibility of maintaining the balance in a densely competitive market place came knocking. Below are 6 little truths every small business owner should know about small businesses.
1. IT TAKES TIME TO BREAK EVEN
Many startup entrepreneurs entering the market place come with the illusion of recovering their invested capital in the shortest time possible. This puts undue pressure on both the entrepreneur and the business in general. There is need for every small business to establish an enduring business brand before going to maximize profits as no building can stand firmly and securely without a strong foundation. It is important to avoid putting the cart before the horse to prevent business failure. Every small business entrepreneur must give himself ample time to establish a clean chain of command, mode of operations, proper market presence, efficient bud geting and record keeping strategy, excellent customer satisfaction and commiserate staff salary and allowance structure. As a business entrepreneur, you need to understand that the market place is designed as a reward system and revenue is only generated based on the value added.
2. STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS AFFECTS YOU EMOTIONALLY
This is a rarely discussed factor that affects all small business entrepreneurs. The fact is that the journey into the realm of financial freedom will definitely take it s toll on you emotionally, and otherwise. This happens because you will have to work for longer hours, make complex administrative decisions and adhere to a strict budgeting structure.Society has a way of misunderstanding every entrepreneur with the determination to succeed; so you must get used to criticisms and feelings of loneliness. These are the price you as business entrepreneur must pay if you're to succeed.
3. EVERY SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR IS BOTH A LEADER AND A MANAGER
It is important to be able to switch roles, as a small business entrepreneur, between leadership and management. As a leader, the vision for, and eventual outcome of the business is your personal responsibility. This is usually an enormous weight to bear because you are to blame, or to be praised for the success or failure of the business. As a manager, it is also your duty to coordinate the daily operations schedule of the business. Most small business owners make the mistake of outsourcing the management of the business; this is ill advised as you can't give a new born baby to a nanny to nurture. You need to prepare yourself for duties such as accounting, budgeting, employee relations, customer relations, branding, sales and marketing, etc, because swapping between these roles will be psychologically and emotionally challenging.
4. SMALL BUSINESSES ALSO PAY TAX
Many small business owners become frustrated when the little profits made are swallowed up as taxes. Be that as it may, it is advisable to forge the habit of prompt tax payment to avoid legal action against your business which could affect your brand.
5. GET READY FOR ATTACKS AND OPPOSITION
In preparing for competition, you should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Every business faces internal and external attacks and oppositions, especially from more established corporations. It's best to create a unique market presence (brand) and perfect your unique selling proposition.
6. YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES
Lastly, it's important to know that mistakes are part of the game. It's important to allow yourself make the necessary mistakes that build the right character and tenacity for success. Don't allow your mistakes to end your dreams, but use them as stepping stones to success. Mistakes allow us to explore our strengths and weaknesses and to become aware of them.
Mistakes are the rungs in the ladder of mastery.

chronique: Well said. Being a business owner is one of the most difficult tasks you would ever undertake in life cos the success of that business first and foremost, depends on you. There would always be periods of discouragement where you'd be tempted to give up. Perseverance is what you'd need at such instances. I Reg my first biz in 2008 and at that time, I had nobody to look up to for guidance. No capital came from anywhere and all I had was my ideas and a very big "I can do it spirit". I gave myself a 30yrs plan of succeding cos I had to learn everything on the job. I made lots of mistakes and learnt from them, I got duped, was cheated on severally, etc. At the end of the day, 10yrs has gone and I've been able to master my craft to an extent. In this short while, I've been able to mentor some friends and a few strangers too... There are going to be many days of being broke cos you have to put every penny back into the business. There are going to be periods where govt policies would almost ground you and put you out of business but you have to be innovative to stay in business and not fold up. There are going to be days when you would need cash/capital and wouldn't see anyone to bail you out. You'd need to keep reinventing yourself to keep up with so much competition and all that. You might need to move from one business to the other before you settle into the right one for you. Entrepreneurship ain't for the faint in heart but for people with the never die spirit. Great post. Thanks for sharing. |

madgoat: Poverty in action for lazy people who claim they are entrepreneurs. Abeg go and find a salaried job and have peace of mind. If you think owning a business is not your forte, why not leave the few who've got the nerve to strive for it rather than castigate them. I sometimes get rattled when I read comments like yours. Your mindset is sticking to a salaried job which is never secure. I honestly don't think you understand the joy and fulfillment of owning something you can call your very own, something that takes your entire life, I mean your time, yet leaves you with so much joy and sense of ownership, that feeling that money cannot buy even if you earned a million pounds per month as an employee elsewhere. Mind you, as a business owner, you are still an employee but this time, you work in your own company which could be a multi-billion dollar firm. I do not mean to appeal to your reasoning but keep it at heart that someday if you don't leave that job, the job will leave you and when it's time for your children to start working, you will be submitting their CVs to your ex-colleagues or associates. Why not put the energy you currently use to build another man's dream into your own thing, work hard at it, make it successful and hand it over to your children. I have said it several times, you can earn fat pay in salaries, benefits and bonuses but nothing compares to the kind of money you'll make if your business blows. Yes it could fail but who says your career cannot come to an abrupt end as well. Note that it is not a bad thing to work for others via a structured organization but make plans to own yours some day. Cheers. |

I am not rooting for Peter Obi but I can categorically tell you that this man is one of the simplest, unassuming, level-headed, intelligent and down to earth Businessman-cum-Politician of our time.
I recall he visited a friend's office in Lagos some years back as an incumbent governor, he came in quietly and was even made to wait by the 'receptionist' who probably didn't realize that was who Oga was waiting for, she had expected sirens and all the noise to usher him in and thought this must be another Peter Obi, bearing the same name as the Governor and even gisted with him for a while....to cut the long story short, she almost fainted when she eventually realized it was the Governor, an incumbent for that matter....his humility and simplicity 'swept her off her feet' |

Don't know much about the sect but I understand their Leader sees himself as a mini-god who can give orders and nobody including the President dares question him. It's been said that for a long time in the northern axis of Nigeria, the sect acts with impunity and gets away with whatever they did hence the Presidency's resolve to contain them. The matter should however be handled with care though, in order to avert a new breed of security threat. |

MadCow1: cult
/kʌlt/
noun
1.
a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object.
Cultism is Bad.. I Agree if contextualized. Churches are actually cults. But I can bet you don't consider them to be bad do you?
Pyrates (Seadogs) are more of a Fraternity (Brotherhood) than they are a cult.
During the period I considered joining them, I did my homework on them, researched their history and from hanging around them studied their behaviours and all and I didn't see anything that disturbed me as such (especially in relation to Violence). I gathered that they (Pyrates) disbanded all Campus "Decks" after they got caught up in some violent activities and you can't become a member until after you have graduated and they find you to be of upstanding character (via referral from a member). So as of today (and since a long time ago), no Univerisity has a Pyrates Fraternity or Student member in them.
Now the reason I changed my mind on joining them was purely the matter of hierarchy. I will explain. A senior Seadog can drill (punish) a junior. I just felt I was too old for such stuff so I opted to be just an associate. I hang out with them (since a lot of my friends and business partners are members) but that's as far as I go..
If there are any diabolical sides to them, I have neither observed it, seen it or heard of it.
So I will simply advise people to research before they castigate a group. I know Seadogs and I speak from a place of first hand knowledge as far as an outsider can know. Wonderful feedback, quite insightful. The most interesting part is disbanding students in higher institutions 'cos that's where the real madness resides. Truth be told, when I was in the Uni, I never for once heard of the Seadogs having a clash with a rival cult group. We barely even knew them unlike the other groups that 'carried' the matter on their heads. Anyway, if what they practice is the picture you just painted, then it's all good but the cultism of today is an epitome of violence and madness rolled into one which we would always condemn. On a lighter note, in life, there will always be hierarchy, with the exception of the US President |

franchasng: lol, bra this advice would have been more useful during my school days, not at this time of my life that I am focused on other greater things that are attracting classier ladies without stress
I don't care if a Lady likes me or pretends to love me cos of money, I am cool with it cos I am never going broke, never, not in the next 100yrs at least, and no lady can scam me a dime or make me spend more than I wish or have planned to spend on her, it can't happen.
The only thing that bothers me is good health and long life, if its money, its settled and I am okay if ladies show me love cos of money, because women must like/love u because of something.....it could be money, fame, intelligence, good looks, talent (singing, dancing, writing, etc), career, profession (as they tend to love doctors, music artistes, actors, TV personalities, etc).
So bra I am never ready to woo any lady in my life, never never....I am okay attracting them with whatever I have, no time to stress my brain for something that I will still get tired of someday
As for the part u said wooing ladies makes a man a strong man, me I don't want to be that kind of strong man, I want to be a strong man in politics and international financial scene, I am so okay with those, and those are the goal
Buhari must go!
Hope you are Atikulated bra Fantastic thought process...love it bro. Leave the 'stong' men to be chasing women upandan, while the 'weak' ones are attracting them with 'goodies' which could be anything like you rightly said....beats my imagination why a man would be continuously chasing a woman; my friend, go and get successful, it is the women that would chase you....even a highly successful woman want a very successful man, how much more..... |

Bet, gamble, stake, wager etc. is all about taking risk with an uncertain outcome.
The most common is in sports and in this case football but when you:
-Invest in cryptos, what are you doing?
-Buy private placement in a company, what are you doing?
-Start a business, what are you doing?
-Contest an election, what are you doing?
-Fund a start-up, what are you doing?
-Get married, what are you doing?
I can go on and on....
When you embark on a venture with a high level of uncertainty, you are gambling.
Someone who failed in 15 businesses and eventually succeeded in one is a gambler, so is someone who plays football bet, loses 2million and eventually wins 25miliion.
Gambling is not bad, addiction is. |

MadCow1: I am not a Pyrate (Seadog), but virtually all my friends are..
I have hung out with them a lot at their "club houses" which they call 'decks'.. I have never felt uneasy or been mistreated whilst there. All their members are University Graduates so they are not involved in all that juvenile nonsense. Age from 30 - 70
So what do they do.. EVERY Friday, they gather in the evenings at their club houses nationwide to chill, drink, eat food, barbeque and then sing (gyration) and dance. As a non member you can watch them sing and dance but you can't join in. You can smoke cigarettes at their club houses but definitely no weed or other narcotics.
Now they do have these national conventions they hold yearly in different states.. I have attended one held in Akwa Ibom some years back, (yes, even though I am not a member)..
They also host seminars and do alot of Community outreach programs on hot button topics from immunization to traffic to you name it. I have never seen them endorse anyone in politics though.
They have their own language which isn't hard if you watch Pirate movies enough..
They have their own handshake obviously too.
It's a Fraternity with people from all works of life. Businessmen, civil servants, industry professionals, etc BUT NO STUDENTS..
I can almost swear that their is nothing occultic or diabolical about them that I have seen and I have been to a lot of their club houses all across East and southern Nigeria. Whatever name you give it, however good you paint it, cultism is cultism and glorifying it in any form is appalling and inimical to our collective interest as a society. Sadly, members that have graduated from all higher institutions decades ago till now, can be found in every walks of life, so you see how complex this issue is. Imagine someone who derived joy in hacking down his rivals while in school just for the sake of supremacy now facing a stiff opposition in politics where money & power is involved, what do you think his course of action would be to beat the competition? Cultism is bad, say NO to it. |

How you choose to live your life of opulence is left to your reasoning which can be very subjective.

What have you done for the country, what have you contributed to the country? But people just want to go and give birth there so their kids will benefit from being called a citizen of other country.
Truly his decision is in order, you have to earn it as a person before you can have a child to become citizen. And not just flying to another man's country for the sole purpose of putting to bed. Trump's action is equal to putting the country's interest first at heart.
Maybe one prostitute from nowhere becomes pregnant, next because she has flight ticket fair from her oshofree business, she is immediately headed to US to give birth, does that really make economic sense to country of reputes allowing such?
Earn it and you will be allowed to become their citizens. And I believe the decision will not be applicable to all, but to those types that only travel to the States for the sole purpose of childbirth and earning citizenship Your post makes perfect sense to me. |

I tire for them oo. Meanwhile I know they hardly get 200k per movie which is not frequently coming. They get endorsement deals which pay them fairly well and in some cases, they hit a jackpot from such deals. IK got a $200,000 deal with a company not too long ago and I suppose he should have other deals in addition to what he earns on the movie roles. Learnt he's got a net worth running into about half a million dollars, not too bad for a Nigerian actor but juxapose the luxurious lifestyle they choose to live and that makes the money meagre. In my opinion, like I've stated earlier on another forum, the wife's luxurious lifestyle and high standards is far beyond IK's financial capability and her expectations have only just met reality. excelAGR42: The English language can be somewhat confusing at times, especially when you fail to update yourself on the meanings of words regularly.
If you have ever heard someone say, “I was literally scared to death?”, that’s impossible simply because the dead can’t talk. Here are seven more English words you probably have been using wrong.
Disinterested
The word “disinterested” is another misunderstood word in the English language. While many people believe that the word means that you’re simply not interested, the original meaning of “disinterested” refers to a lack of bias or being fair and impartial: “We needed a disinterested judge to decide this case.” To indicate that you’re indifferent about something, you should use the word “uninterested.”
Bemused
People sometimes use the word “bemused” in place of “amused,” but the two words are not synonyms. Bemused means that you’re confused or bewildered.
Literally
The word “literally” is literally one of the most misused words in the English language. This word is often used as a way to emphasize something that happened: “I literally died laughing.” The word refers to something that actually happened, without exaggeration, such as, “The tornado that came through literally destroyed every house in its path.”
Peruse
A lot of people believe that the word “peruse” means to read something quickly. As a matter of fact, the opposite of this is true. Peruse means to “read with thoroughness or care.” Used correctly, you would say, “I spent at least an hour perusing my notes so that I fully understood it.”
Terrific
This word is one of the words in the English language that has become completely disconnected from its origin. A lot of the time, it is used as a compliment or to describe a good feeling: “That outfit looks terrific!” or “I slept great and feel terrific today!” However, the origin and proper meaning of the word is completely different, and means “very bad” or “exciting fear”. You might hear something like, “I just saw a terrific accident on my way home from work,” which would unfortunately sound strange in modern language.
Ambivalent
Most people think that the term ambivalent means that you don’t care about something. The word however means that you have contradictory or mixed feelings about a subject matter—not that you’re apathetic. Used correctly, you could say, “I’m feeling quite ambivalent about where I want to work after graduation this year. I can’t decide whether I should work with a company or start a private business.”
Irregardless
While this word is popular in certain dialects, “irregardless” simply doesn’t exist in the English language. The word that you’re looking for is “regardless.” For example, “Regardless of the cost, they said they’re going to have a society wedding.” Thanks for sharing....the 'terrific' though. |

It's like presenting a fake certificate to get employment in a multinational and you become one of their most productive staff, surpassing targets and immensely contributing to the bottomline, shining year in year out and the company eventually finds out that your certificate is fake, would you be retained in that company? It has become an integrity issue, which automatically qualifies you as a liar and dishonest human being that cannot be trusted. It's only a matter of time, you will defraud that company. So, why did Kemi Adeosun resign, this is someone I personally believe did not know she was brandishing a fake NYSC certificate all along, she had probably asked someone to help her get an exemption certificate and a forged one was handed over to her, my thoughts though. What did she do? She resigned honorably. Buhari's should do the same if he cannot present his certificate. It even sounds absurd, how can you tell people you have something and there is not evidence. Ok, you own a company, you just recruited a new employee who claims have a Master's degree from Harvard but insists his certificate is with his former employer, would you allow him keep the job or ask him to present the goddamn certificate. Nigeria and Nigerians should be treated with respect. |

He said Fela's women, including his mother and his step mum Najite, suffered brutality in the hands of Nigerian soldiers who oppressed them because of Fela's fearlessness. He added that their home was usually invaded by trigger-happy soldiers.
He wrote:
Whatever you think Fela went through, he went through with his family. We were his rock. My mother used to tell me bed time stories about all the scars on her. My step mum, Najite was the first person the soldiers saw in kalakuta, she was swimming, they picked her up by her head from the pool and broke her neck!! My mother had a broken bayonet stitched into her and she couldn’t walk for 18months. The amount of state sanctioned violence I have seen in my life as a child. When I was 9 I saw the cops shot and kill one of my dads boys in front of shrine and just left him there for nothing. Fela tried to protect us but u can’t protect anyone from that! You know these fucking cops would come to our house and just shoot up the place at least 2ice a week? Do y’all know that? Or u think this is just play play? See Fela’s music is a gift for the world and everyone is welcome but our legacy is ours alone, to protect and nurture. Y’all fakers stay waaaaay back. This isn’t your space. #getthesax

gurunlocker: Oga stop supporting mediocrity. This same issue was raised before he was elected president. What will take him to go and get his result? Moreover, who submit original result to join Army?
Dude does not have any certificate, he is just one of those Northerners that joined that army by recommendation because that's how the system has been.
Is 3 years not enough to get his certificate even if it's to send someone? A call will even do. Stop supporting blindly!!! I just tire for this 'ericsmith' guy o...is it not obvious there is something fishy about his certificate? For 3 years, (a whole) 3 years, you couldn't rectify whatever the issue is. You gave us this 'scope' in 2015, out of love and respect, we swallowed it and allowed it pass, 2018, you feed us with the same story, haba, who be fool nah? He should know Nigerians are too intelligent for this *co*ck* and bull*story, he should go tell that to the marines, story for the gods. We (Nigerians) must insist on seeing a copy of his certificate and must not allow this to be swept under the carpet a second time. |
