Career decision-making should be done personally. I feared that the hype around' STEM' would create a load of degree related questions and that's whats happening. Mamacita was advised to 'follow her heart' and think everyone should do the same. Take time out to discover your sense of purpose (don't be deluded though ). Visit the US Dept of Education to research information on job outlook, salary, demand, etc. To those of us that are not science inclined and desire Arts degrees, you can pursue teacher certifications after graduating. Instead of a BA. in Sociology, you can go for BS in Social Work. Same degree, but the latter is more specific and allows you to get certified as a Social Worker. Loool Hope this ends the worries and questions about career choices. “The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live in.” -- Flora Whittemore "You stick to your principles and when opportunities come along, you pounce on them with vigor" -- Charlie Munger. |
geodarmy: Yvette, clear the air na... Go to sleep or go party! |
Looool |
kpolli: See Yvete forming peace maker...Man, its a priviledge and I'm so happy to do so. Loooool. Me of all people?? God is good! |
geodarmy: Yvette said it all, no further comment.Looool don't take his comment personally. Your original comment came across as oil and gas or nothing, but for you to take the time to type all that shows that you mean well. Just accept criticism and move on. ![]() |
imperiouxx: Sorry I didn't talk to you today....I was so pissed. At bold, you're bad you know I told youMy one and only imperiouxx out of all Imperiouxxes! Lol. I'm in Dallas for the weekend. Doing nairaland with my phone. Howz your weekend? Take it easy. You seem kinda upset today, unlike you. |
@ Geodarmy. Don't mind kpolli. You meant well with your posts though like he rightfully said, people with low reasoning will think that its STEM or nothing. Well, if they are moving back to Nigeria or confident in their future goals with a degree like Anthropology for instance, there is nothing to worry about. To be marketable here, maybe they can creatively find/export fossil remains to museums in the US for business purposes. H1b not needed for that. |
Ms Nas: Lmbo! I wasn't hiding before na!You're perfectly fine with physics. Don't worry about it. Having witnessed frustration from many friends here owing to the H1b thing, I always advise people to major in something marketable in the US. I know Nigerians with MBAs that are doing well and know a lot that have moved back to Nigeria with frustration. The question is, what concentration or focus did you major in? Think about it this way, its you against the pool of applicants most of which are authorized to work. How do I make myself worthy of sponsorship by my Employer? That's the idea. With your degree, you'll be alright. |
Snazzygirl: Blood dey hot today o, pls calm down peeps.Yes ma. Officially in time-out! ![]() @ MsNas has finally come out of hiding! |
olarwarlay: Thanks so much Ma'am, I actually did a diploma in law program in between and as since been working as a branch controller with my brothers telecoms business which is why I want to go for a degree in business administration. With an Associates in Law, please do not apply as a freshman. Apply as International transfer. I'm kinda tired right now to write much tonight. Got a cough from munching these cashew nuts from Nigeria. Do these first and be creative with your gap. @ Kpolli: I need to find you a good Nigerian wife in the US. Sweet like pie. Haha! Why go to sokoto when what you're looking for is in your shokoto. |
olarwarlay: Pls everyone, I have a question to ask.You need SAT & TOEFL for undergrad. Look up the meaning of the acronyms. Find out what your school requires from prospective applicants. If you mention my name, I assume that you'd want to hear from me, the truth, RAW. I must say that you've got some work to do with the gap. Seems like you've been out of school for a while. Work on that. Timing is not important right now. Don't be in such a rush to write SAT unprepared. Study, plan ahead and nail it. Good luck. Some people just need to STFU. Very annoying posts this evening. If you'd love to return to Nigeria, that's your business and nobody else. Come to the US, start your business and employ people to work for you. Let's see how USCIS grants your green card request. Not every degree gets sponsorship for H1b after graduation. Don't get a degree in Pol. Sci and expect anyone to file for you. |
kpolli: Am beginning to feel she is just giving excuses for when she starts sleeping aroundOMG! She seems sweet though! |
GboyegaD: Isn't DFW a nice metropolis to live in?It sure is! Just too quiet for me anyways. @Seunbunmi, here's your new 'father'. ![]() |
imperiouxx: His visa is still valid. Resumption on I-20 is what changed. He won't be interviewed again? What if he's going to a different school? Wouldn't it have been easier to obtain an I-20 from a CC and use the visa he already has with it? |
Seunbunmi: Lolzz, GboyegaD am stil in 9ja I dnt want to rush to a cc, am followin my highly esteem yvete advice...takin my time to make my final decision for summer or fall sessionPraise God! Halleluyah!! Whats going to happen to your visa though?? ![]() geodarmy: How do you know him? Yvette, you are everywhere I swear.....lolLoool yeah! The 'mean' aunty in the South! Ask him? |
GboyegaD: Madam, stay back in your Texas jeje and you can always visit NM whenever you want to except you wanna be his roommateHe's a guy!! Looool. He was originally going to Kentucky so you've adopted him in Dallas Gboyega. Hmnn |
geodarmy: I have been following this thread for long and I must commend you guys for a job well done. For those who care to listen, if you are a foreign student and you are not into IT or Oil and Gas, your chance(s) of making good money or getting a H-1B/Green Card after studies is so slim, unless you have a PhD. Even at that, you can and will never earn up to what the oil and IT guys with just a masters earn. Now to the controversial part of your comment, You share most of my exact sentiments which is that If you want to remain the in the US, certain degrees may not be worth it. I've seen lawyers go back to Nursing school.. heck yea! I left liberal arts to technology. Admittedly, I was warned and I did not listen. My childhood goal was the United Nations. Upon graduation, I realized that its not that easy to get a UN job, plus Nigerians are not allowed to sit for the exams. It got me depressed. I've applied for jobs in Investment banking, healthcare...name it. On the O&G issue, its all about marketability as Kpolli stated. I majored in BA. Intl Relations-Econ. I was able to get a job in O&G and I'm not a Geologist. Likewise Human Resource personnel are needed in almost every industry. I work in Global Mobility and most of us are either Accountants, HR ...etc. Of course, I don't earn as much as geologists, but certifications is it! Then pushed myself further for a masters in SCLT because I realized that Supp. Chain is hot right now. More experience + certs = higher pay. A guy at my Church barely 2 years from NIG majored in MS. Chem Eng and he works with Jacobs Engineering, still on OPT, but with good pay (from what he told me). Courses like Biochem, Chem, Physics are okay IMO. I believe that the demand is still good and are admissible to most science jobs. DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND STUDY THE MARKET. SELL YOURSELF AS A MARKETER WOULD DO HIS PRODUCT! geodarmy: a guy who I met through this forum in 2010 who is also a geologist and working in an oil company now in California.I know who that is. He's always lurking online and hardly comments I see you!! ![]() |
geodarmy: I have been following this thread for long and I must commend you guys for a job well done.Hey Geodarmy, I'd like to say thanks for taking the time to reach out to mamacita. Anyone that helps her, helps me. Thanks Kpolli as well. For the record, she's not seeking attention as someone mentioned. I'm proud of her because everything was done in a rush. It took only FOUR MONTHS to get to where she is now. One night we're chatting on skype in August and I suggested the masters program. September 1 she wrote IELTS. September 27 - GRE September 29 - Application sent to the schools December 4 - Visa approved December 23 - Arrival There was so much to do with little time that she didn't really make the career decision herself. Oct 1 was the deadline. I suggested degree programs and she chose from my ideas. On arrival in the US, everyone talks about healthcare and she sunk into confusion. If you can't stand a woman that's 'babyish'. Don't get married anytime soon. |
Cutejay: I am a good girl but right now i want to be bad cuz my goodness hasn't paid off i dont need anyman around me anymore. Please advice me before i take my final decision. They are many good MEN out there. Don't be a bad girl, aiight? Stay sweet. Trust is a big deal. Sometimes, people meet Mr. Perfect when they are not even searching. |
imperiouxx: Because by name New Mexico isn't part of the US.....looooooolIgnorance is not bliss! Its pathetic for anyone to think that NM is in Mexico. I heard that the University of Hawaii is a great school too. Besides, whats WES? You mean the foreign evaluation guys? |
kpolli: Just checked the schools out, quite very very affordable but don't have many courses. . . . Very good option instead of community collegeReally, that cheap?? Around Houston, they're cheap public colleges like Lamar, Prairie View A&M, but I think reputation should be considered somewhat. I'm hesitant in dropping names because some people would relax and never research a College that suits their needs. |
webstradamus: if you can withstand the cold in Minnesota, I can confidently tell you it's one of the most affordable states to study in the US. Minnesota State University Moorhead, Minnesota State University Mankato and St. Cloud University all offer in-state tuition for international students. This means you could be paying less than $4000 for a 12-18 credit semester! Now all roads will lead to the schools mentioned above. ![]() Why is it that nobody wants to join Imperiouxx , my neighbor in the North-West. kpolli: Yvete has been teaching u bad things abiWhat can I possibly teach a Lagos-chic'? ; |
fadinus: ΌЌ bro, abeg try gv her nxt tym shogboFadinus, you know that you're a sh*t starter right? You only comment to brew tension. @Kpolli Thug Hug?? Loooooool Oh my God! You're something else. |

Anthonymighty:hahahaaa I sincerely mean it. I told mamacita the night before your interview. You can ask her. |
imperiouxx: Yvete is the baddest girl I ever know. That's an inside joke huh? Though mamacita TEMPORARILY dislikes you, I still got 'likes' for ya! ![]() That's a ♫♬ song by Beanie Siegel + Jayz ♫♬ - I know you don't listen to rap music anyways. You can look it up. |
Mamacita007: Pls some questions r nt worth answering before they will come after u again. Dis thread is full of ingrates. I dnt even like how u type all those answers for dem. Wen u say wat they don't like, its trouble from there. D purpose of this thread is to help those who deserve it not dose that don't.Relevant comments deleted and changed to ![]() |
olarwarlay: Pls can i still apply for the toefl exams 'coz i saw on the website that the next exam date in lagos is jan25, do u advise i still register for it?General Requirements: Grad School: GRE + Toefl/Ielts. Undergrad: SAT + Toefl/Ielts |
Ms Nas: *rolling on the floor*! Usually, I prowl this page and quietly read the posts, but I can't help but laugh at some posts. So people are totally clueless! Sheesh! You can't string a couple of sentences together in English correctly but u wanna study in America?! I laugh in spanish. Yvete, you're mean sis! =D =))Nope! I'm not nice like Kpolli & Imperiouxx ..... . ..... Its called tough love. loool She's a handful! |
