Our econmic growth is lower than the rest of africa but our GDP is still by far the highest in africa. And we still growing. We have just uncoverd a larg shale gase depost and may have off shora oil on the west coast. Our limit is by far not reached.

chris365: personally, i've never had issues with the AK-47 cos of it's ability to be used in any environment. nigeria is a large country with a mixure of desert, forest, and alll sorts of environments (there was a time it used to snow in jos. Don't know of now sha). And there's a growing need to acquire weapons we can maintain domestically.

Gone are those days when we clamoured for fancy weapons so our military can look like some overated fancy military that are number one cos of fine equipments and low battle experience.

My take is that if the army are trying to go for other rifles without plans to locally produce ours, they should just forget it and continue with the AK-47 and work on modifications like the chinese and russians.

They've probably taken out more insurgents and rebels with those AKs than the American M-16 rifles in Afghanistan.

The AK platform is a good platform but the AK47 it self is dated. accuracy is low (due to the ammo used and poor location of rear sights) the ak74 is a slight improvement. The current AK100 series is far better than the AK47 if a upgrade where to be made it would be the best choice since the user would be familiar with it.

The CTAR 21 is a very good weapon and if the army where to make it general use get the licences to produce it local.
