ba7man: You started well but your ending was crap.I believe that the disintegration of Nigeria is imminent. We have tried for almost 55 years to make Nigeria work to no avail. All managed to achieve was one colossal disaster after the other from the first coup of 1966 to ethnic massacres to civil war to sectarian violence to one corrupt Government or the other that has left 60% of Nigerians living on less than a Doller a day. Hurrrayyy!!! We are doing splendid! The American authorities who predicted the dismantling of Nigeria by 2015 were no fools, all indications lead to this eventuality. The only reason Nigeria has lasted this long is because the British and successive Military governments kept it together by brute force. But those people are now gone and free will comes into play. I pray for the peaceful dissolution of Nigeria,God knows that there has been enough bloodshed. But it will be the Yorubas who will decide the balance. If the Yorubas declare Oduduwa and stand with us,then they have made the right choice but if they align themselves with the northerners, then they are the enemy. Very soon, the Yorubas will have a tough decision to make. Oduduwa or war! Hopefully, it will not come to war but time will tell. |
logica: Lol. Once again you are a clown. I'm supposed to learn from your fellow delusional Igbo right? I don't think you need books; psychiatric treatment would be more appropriate.Doesn't matter, you will always be a 'Nigerian' with no sense of self determination and I will be a Biafran who knows his power of choice. The slave and the master have different trains of thought. Need anyone ask why Yorubas and Igbos will never be friends? |
As you all are busy calling each other names,Igbos and Yorubas alike, the real enemy is out there killing you all every day. I'm a proud Igbo and Biafran supporter but even I know that there is no reason for Igbos and Yorubas to ever fight. We seem to forget that originally, the people of the south-west,south-east and south-south made up the quassi-country known as 'The protectorate of Southern Nigeria' and we were prosperous and at peace. Everything changed when we were merged with the 'Northern vandals' in 1914. And for those who do not know, the 1914 Amalgamation document has a clause that says that after 100 years of the Nigerian 'experiment',any people who want to opt out can do so. Nigeria stopped being a legal entity as of 12 midnight,31st December 2013. The Yorubas, the Igbos and the people of the south-south now have the legal right to form their own nations so what are we fighting for? I for one do not believe that the Yoruba people ('one Nigeria lovers') have it in them to seek an Oduduwa nation but I know for certain that the Igbos and the people of the south-south would declare the republics of Biafra and the republics of the Niger-Delta respectively this very afternoon if they could. Of course,we expect that the Northerners will not like this and may even try to stop this by force of arms which will lead to civil war. The problem the Yorubas are going to have is if they join with Northerners to fight. This time around,it won't be like Biafra of old. No super power nation gives arms to Islamists these days. The art of warfare has changed and Northern Nigeria simply got no chance against a combined Biafran -Niger Delta force. But if the Yorubas join the North, we will be raising a Biafran Flag over the palace of the Ooni of Ife by the time we are done!! |
logica: Ogbeni go and sleep. Your history revision f00ls no one but yourself and you are proving to be a clown and no more. If you do want to know why Victor Banjo was in Enugu prison find a proper book to read rather than making wild leaps to conclusion.I don't say what I don't know. If several books say the same thing without anyone refuting it the an element of the truth exists somewhere. Although this thread is about Yoruba/Igbo relationship, you can't distort history and the involvement of senior Yoruba officers in the first coup in Nigeria. Read this link below and learn. http://www.nigeriansinamerica.com/articles/6080/1/Ojukwu-The-Megalomaniac-And-Demagogue-Really/Page1.html |
Jaymaestro: Tribalism seems to be more of a threat than racism recently . I'm inter-tribal - I dislike my Igbo mom's tribe and Yoruba dad's tribe _ but both grandpas were awesome . I only take a striking interest in em hausas - single dimensional _ they are either super meek or super deadly and so lovely _Da rest can die with their apathy for one another . if need arose for em to divide ' they should - This OP just gave his critical assessment 'and em opposition will counter and so on and on .. I'm sick of all this bigots 'admin mods are even a greater threat cus they knew this will turn into another heated feud . There's no Igbo or Yoruba or Hausa people 'there's only Nigeria all you mothaFu**ers ! if Nigeria fall ' we shall all fall . Isreal Arab or Egypt or anywhere you all think assumed presumed you all spawned from _ ,born sinners !And why didn't these tribes fall before the white man came and "baptised" you a "Nigerian"? The British came and pointed Guns at your fore-fathers and forced them to answer a 'slave' name called Nigeria. When the British were leaving, they handed the guns over to the northerners who are still holding it and asking Igbos to answer the same slave name. Unfortunately,Igbos and the people of the south-south know that the rest of Nigeria adds no economic value to them. Proud to be Igbo!! Proud to be Biafran!!!! |
abysirius: @ OP, kudos! I love this thread. It's thought provoking and an eye opener to all those nut heads. Hope they would listen. He who has ears...If there is an ethnic group in Nigeria that is experienced in the adverse effects of war,it is the Igbos. They bore the full effects of war fought on their land for almost 3 years. When you look deep into why 2 people fight or why two people go to war, you will find that it all starts because one or both parties decide to be unreasonable. I don't pray for war in Nigeria, why would we even fight each other? War will only come if there are people who want to pull out of Nigeria and the others say no. Freedom is one of the few things in life worth fighting and dying for. In Britain, the people of Scotland are about to vote if they want to be independent or not. Nobody is fighting there, but if you suggest the same idea in Nigeria, everybody starts talking about war. My prayers are that one day in the near future,my people the Igbos will pull out of Nigeria peacefully . But if the rest of Nigeria say no,then this unreasonable attitude will surely lead to war. We go our way peacefully or we stay together in pieces. "Ejiro maka ngbagbu aghalu ogu" !! |
logica: Guy don't waste your time arguing with this dude who obviously doesn't know Nigerian History. The dead giveaway was his claim that Banjo was part of the coup plot of January 1966; when everybody that knows history will tell you that Banjo had been in detention long before January 1966 on a completely unrelated matter. If what you are saying is true then tell me how Victor Banjo ended up in the cell block in Enugu prison were the coup plotters like Nzeogwu,Nwobodi and rest were kept? Don't twist things around. Victor Banjo was the highest ranking officer involved in that coup and he was much senior to Nzeogwu. Chances are that Victor Banjo might have even led that coup, who knows? |
PenSniper: Indeed i agree with all your assertions except the claim that there was pogrom in the West. How do you mean ?There was progrom in the west. It may not have been acute as the one in the north but it still happend anyway.Easterners were slaughtered in Ibadan and Lagos. |
Rashdimuh: How come you igbo folks didn't mention how ojukwu killed victor banjo a young father, and how his troops killed like 40 italians then, pple by gone is by gone, we shld mv 4wd and stp blivin craps how fathers fed us with.On Victor Banjo. I suggest you search for written by Ben Odogwu (I forget the title), a young Biafran intelligence officer. Victor Banjo,Ifeajuna hatched a plot to remove Ojukwu. They tried to recruit mr Odogwu into the plot but unknown to them,Odogwu's loyalty lay with Ojukwu. Odogwu secretly tape recorded the meetings were Ifeajuna,Banjo,Agbam and Alele discussed the coup plot to remove Ojukwu. The reasons why they wanted remove Ojukwu is topic for another day but the pertinent thing to understand is that anyone who try's or even plots to remove a military head of state faces execution if they fail,no matter how good their intentions were. This is common knowledge. Victor Banjo was arrested, tried and executed for plotting a coup. |
jaybee: You tried; but did not get the gist. Ojukwu wanted to be head of state. by all means, including sacrificing a section of the country in a needless and unwarranted war, even a child would know Ojukwu can not win. the igbos fought a foolish war for pride and got the un-mistaken result. its no use trying to reconstruct history now. lets all learn a lesson on wild goose chase. What are you talking about that Ojukwu wanted to be head of state by all means? That's why I say that before you comment on such sensitive matters such as the war that claimed millions of lives, do your research and find out what really happened. After General Ironsi was killed, there were many officers senior to Gowon (Ogundipe,Nwawo,Effiong,Bassey,Ejoor and Ojukwu were all senior to Gowon). The only reason Gowon became head of state was because he was the highest ranking northerner at the time. Ojukwu told Gowon to do the honourable thing and hand over to highest ranking officer which was Brigadier Ogundipe but Gowon refused. So how did Ojukwu want to be head of state? The same Ojukwu went to Ghana and signed a peace accord with Gowon in other to maintain peace in Nigeria but it was Gowon who reneged on the agreement. It is a coward that sees his people being butchered says he won't fight back because he will lose the fight. If it were not for all the weapons of war that Gowon got from Britain and Russia,Nigeria would not have defeated Biafra. In fact,Gowon said he had no money to fight the war. Only international support tilted the war in favour of Nigeria. My father told me that most of the war equipments used by Biafrans were made by Biafrans and they recorded several spectacular victories against Nigeria. It is a testament of valour to the Biafran soldier that despite a Naval blockade, starvation and being outgunned and outmanned,he still kept the dream alive for 3 years . One more thing I will add is that if there is another war, there will be no Britain or Russia coming to help Nigeria. A naval blockade will be almost impossible to maintain and the number of nations that will support Biafra when they hear that we are just fighting for our freedom will be many. The so called Nigerian army can't even defeat Boko haram of a few thousand men. Like I said, I hope we don't have a war but if it should happen. There is no way Nigeria will be able to defeat Biafra. |
A lot of people make ignorant comments on Nairaland. I was born after the war and so was not a living witness to it but that did not stop me from reading books and researching about it. I also got first hand accounts about the war from my mother who was a refugee in camp similar to the one in these pictures and my father who was a captain in the Biafran army. I know all about the war. The important question to ask is "why was the war fought?" The counter-coup of 1966 saw northern officers rise and butcher any Eastern Nigerian officer or soldier they could lay their hands on but that didn't stop there. Easterners were butchered across the north and western region. Ojukwu was then military Governor of Eastern Nigeria. Ojukwu told Gowon to stop the killings but he didn't. Ojukwu even encouraged the Easterners who ran back home to return to the north only for them to be killed in greater numbers. Ojukwu sat down with Gowon in Aburi,Ghana and discussed the escalating crises and they came up with an agreement called the 'Aburi Accord' that would bring peace and keep Nigeria as one. Gowon signed this agreement only to return to Lagos and turn his back on it. With easterners being massacred in their thousands all over Nigeria, what would anyone expect Ojukwu to do? He did what he could to bring peace but it didn't work. How many of you would have stood by and watched your own being killed in the name of 'one Nigeria'? Ojukwu did the only thing any sane man would have done to protect his people after all peace initiatives by him had failed and that was to ask his people to return home and declared Biafra. Biafra was about the right of a people to self determination, freedom of association and the right to protect ones life and property. If any of us had been Ojukwu,we too would have declared Biafra. The war followed and the only reason that Nigeria defeated Biafra was the overwhelming support it got from super powers such as Britain and Russia. I want to add that it was the God given right of anyone or a people to decide if they want to be Nigerians or not,you can't force someone to be Nigerian. The war was fought for one single reason. For the oil resources of Eastern Nigeria. That's all it was, the northerners need the economic resources of the people of the South-east and South-south like fish needs water. Anyone who believes that the northerners and their Yoruba collaborators fought this war because of the 'everlasting love' they have for the Igbos and the people of the SS is a fool. 2 million people died, millions more suffered and for what? To give northerners and Yorubas control over the rest of Nigeria for 40 years. Look at the Nigeria they presided over,a country riddled with corruption, incompetence, porverty and insecurity. This is the so called dream of 'one Nigeria'? I pray that there will not be another war in Nigeria but we all know that Nigeria is living on 'borrowed time'. We will all go our different ways in peace or in pieces. |
PenSniper: One thing i cannot deny you is this - you certainly know how to make excuses for faults and failures. It also baffles me that with your assumed education, you can refer to any group of people with brains and brawns as cowards. Is your problem that of mischief or half-literacy ? What further bloodbath could have been more than occured under Ojukwu's watch ? Ifeajuna, Banjo and co. saw the handwriting early and wanted to prevent it only for the tyranical Ojukwu to execute them.I don't know what you mean by 'making excuses for Igbo faults and failures' and I really don't care. One thing I do know is that Biafra was a just cause. It is an inalienable right of anyone to decide if they want to be Nigerian or not and for whatever reason. Igbos are not bound to Yorubas or Northerners by any celestial creed. Nigeria is nothing but a 'slave labour camp' created by the British for administrative convenience. Maybe some Yorubas were abhorred by the senseless slaughter of easterners prelude to the war and actually helped but this pales into insignificance with the many thousands that were killed in the wave after wave of program's across the north and the west. I actually believe that Awolowo might have made a good leader but I doubt that a federation of the east and west would have lasted long if it ever was. It is my fervent belief that the relationship between the Yorubas and Igbos will never be a good one as long as we remain 'Nigerians' because we will always be engaged in a battle of supremacy which will only breed mutual contempt and suspicion. Igbos and Yorubas are 2 ethnic groups that are both in excess of 30 million each. Far more populous than most nations of the earth. To bring these two diverse people together under one banner called 'Nigeria' is an invitation to disaster (Our 55 years as a nation is testament to this). Nigeria is simply not workable. It might have worked when we allowed our colonial masters to lord over us but when they left,we just could not lord over our selves. The only thing that will Forster a good relationship between Igbos and Yorubas is if we have our own individual nations. That's when we will have something to relate about without the fear of one trying to dominate the other. Nigeria is a disastrous 55 year old mistake and the sooner we accept this, the better for future Yoruba/Igbo relationship |
PenSniper: Your long post is an attempt to rewrite history plus mere insinuations. You are the ignorant one. Like I said before, most of the officer corps at the time were Igbos. It would have been near on impossible to conduct a coup and Igbos would not be heavily involved. You conveniently called it an Igbo coup even though 2 of the major ring leaders were Yorubas. Why didn't you call it an Igbo/Yoruba coup? Also is the fact that unlike all other coups that followed, the coup plotters did not want power for themselves. They only wanted to remove the bad "eggs".You can go on YouTube and and search about that coup and see what the conspirators confessed to while in jail, they wanted Awolowo in charge. You asked why the coup plotters didn't kill other people from the east? Well for starters, neither Zik or Okpara were in town then,Infact,Zik was abroad at the time on official assignment. Also, the GOC of the Nigerian Army at the time,Ironsi,an Igbo man was targeted. It was Victor Banjos duty to kill Ironsi but he goofed. Victor Banjo was arrested as he made his way to Ironsi's bed chamber in dead of the night with a corked machine gun. Why would they want to kill Ironsi if this was an Igbo coup? Who even stopped this coup? Wasn't Igbo soldiers like Ironsi,Nwawo and Ojukwu? This connotation that it was an Igbo coup is baseless. Even if for the sake of aguement that this was an Igbo coup, can the Igbo nation be blamed for the actions of a few officers? I think not. You said that the declaration of republics has led nowhere,of course it had led no where because the Yorubas have always colluded with northerners to scuttle it each time. The fact that Yorubas want to be slaves to 'one Nigeria' doesn't mean that the rest of us want the same. The attempt at freedom is one of the greatest life choices a people can make and the fact that Yorubas have consistently thrown away their sovereignty (first to the British and now to the northerners) is exactly why most Igbos think that cowardice is an inherent trait amongst the Yorubas. Your so called "It takes people with brains and brawns for meticulous plans before taking the plunge into the unknown " is a speech worthy of a true coward. In almost 55 years of nationhood,we have massive corruption, incompetence in government and over 60% living below the porverty line and you Yorubas are still trying to figure out the unknown with your brains and brawns? Real swell! You also criticised people like MASSOB and BZM for their attempts at demanding freedom for Igbos. For a people like Yorubas who are yet to emancipate themselves from the mental bondage that is Nigeria, what these people are doing will look silly. Yet against the incessant crack down by Nigerian officials, these groups continue their agitation to their GOd given right to self determination. Nothing could be more noble. One last thing I want to add is this "Ojukwu ran away" statement people keep harping about all the time. When it looked like the war would be lost, many Biafran officers decided that they would continue guerrilla warfare rather than capitulate. If Ojukwu had not stepped aside, the war might have still been on now. If Ojukwu had stayed back to be slaughtered, many die hard Biafran soldiers would have fought to the death and a blood bath would have happened on an even bigger scale. Ojukwu left and Biafra surrendered the next day bringing peace. A soldier who lives, lives to fight another day. Someday,I hope the Yoruba nation will revive the spirit of an Oduduwa country because Nigeria is already a lost cause but until then,Igbos and Yorubas will always view each other with mutual suspicion and contempt |
I am really sorry for Okorocha. The man "hanged" himself politically when he joined the supporter of APC APC party. It was this same Okorocha that was running from Uwazulike to Victor Umeh to Chief Nwaka to Martin AGbaso on his knees, begging for the APGA candidacy. When he won,he said that APGA was the best political party that would serve the interests of Ndigbo. But as soon APC dangled a promise of higher office before him, he now remembered that APGA was just a "regional party". Now he claims he made APGA. Ok ooo Rochas,2015 is around the corner and you will tell me how your supporter of APC party that has been completely rejected by Igbos will win. I am from Anambra but the Imo friends I have talked to have told me that I have more chances of visiting the moon than Rochas getting re-elected. It doesn't matter if Rochas paves all the streets in Imo with Diamonds, Igbos will not allow the supporters of APC in!!!!! |
I want to clarify something's that certain ignorant Yorubas have used to justify the senseless assault on Igbos. 1) The January 1966 coup was not an Igbo coup. At the time, the majority of Officers were Igbos and thus why most of the officers were from that part of Nigeria. It should also be pointed out that 2 leading members of that plot were Yorubas (Ademoyega and Victor Banjo). One last thing about this coup which Yorubas might find interesting is that the plotters had no desire to take power for themselves ,they actually wanted to make Awolowo head of Government! 2) The so called invasion of Ore,which incidentally was led by a Yoruba man (Victor Banjo), was in response to the shelling of Garkem,a Biafran border town. The war had already been started by Nigerians and it was only natural for Biafra to invade Nigeria. 3)The final thing I want to say which I consider a major difference between my Igbo people and Yorubas is that Igbos have the unquechable thirst for freedom and to reach new horizons. This is a major reason why Igbos are the second largest population in every state after the indigenous population of that state. I grew up reading the rich cultural history of the Yorubas. I read that the Oyo empire once stretched from present day Benin to old Dahomey. How come that the present day Yoruba man has lost all sense of self determination in the name of 'one Nigeria'? The Niger delta militant leader,Isaac Boro declared the Republic of the Niger delta in 1966. Ojukwu declared Biafra in 1967. What have the Yorubas ever done to have their own nation? What the Yorubas are busy doing is fighting for regional autonomy, resource control and Yoruba presidency when all of these things would have been taken for granted if they ever have the backbone to fight for their own separate country. The worst thing is that whenever the people of the south east or South -South seek their independence,it is the Yorubas who will conspire with their northern allies to frustrate that venture. They will even come in Nairaland to post a litany of petty reasons why Biafra must not be. I think that says a lot that the present day Yorubas have thrown away their sovereignty for the sake of the British created 'petting zoo' called Nigeria. And they are doing this with a dangerous scorpion called Hausa/Fulanis. The relationship between Yorubas and Igbos? There isn't one,the Igbos shed slave mentality a long time ago and fought a war to prove it. We are waiting for the day the Yorubas will come to table as their own masters instead of as Nigerians(a by-word for slave of northerners) then we shall see what relationship there can be. |
Reading through this thread, anyone would understand why Igbos and Yorubas are not meant to be together as a nation. We are different in our outlook on life and our history isn't a good one. As a proud Igbo man,I'm happy to identify with the cause of my people and everybody knows that the real enemy of the Igbos are the northerners. The fact that the Yorubas have decided to be allies of the north puts them in the same boat. Nigeria is today a contraption which the Yorubas and Northerners want use to control the state of affairs to the detriment of the rest of us. APC supporter of APC party (which we all know is just a vehicle for Buhari and his vice presidential candidate,Tinubu, to take power) is just one method they wish to use. We have all outgrown this " I am greater than you and you are greater than me" nonsense. What we should all be talking about is how we should all have our individual nations. We should competing as nations instead of competing as citizens of a British fabrication called Nigeria. The people of the South-east and South-South know that they have no future in Nigeria, they know that the reason why the civil war was fought was not because of the 'incredible love' the Yorubas and the northern friends have for the Okirika man or the Ijaw man or Efik man or the Igbo man. They fought to control the economic and political life of these people. We should on Nairaland talking about what the republics of Odudwa and Biafra and the Niger-delta are doing together as independent world nations and our achievements but here we are talking as 'Nigerians' ,a name given to us by some British mans girlfriend. One thing about the Yorubas that I and my fellow Igbos always ponder about is why these people have long sold off their God given right to self determination and the Oduduwa republic dream to be ass-lickers of the north? Why are these people not ready to remove the shackles of bondage called Nigeria just like the people of the South-east and South-south are trying to? Therein is why the Igbos and Yorubas are as different as day and night. |
I commend Massob,Biafran Zionist movement (BZM) and Radio Biafra under Nnamdi Kanu for all the wonderful work they have been doing for the restoration of Biafra. The fight for freedom is never easy the good news is that we are getting there. I believe that I will be applying for my Biafran passport by this time next year. Nigeria is a fraud visited on Igbos by British imperialists and it must stop. It is only Hausas and Yorubas who want this monumental deceit called 'Nigeria' to continue. The rest of Southern Nigeria such as Igbos want the republic of Biafra and the people of the south-south want the republic of the Niger- Delta. No matter how anyone looks at it, you cannot force a person to be a Nigerian. A country that has to be kept together by force of arms is not a country. |
Hopefully, the rest of the people of Eastern Nigeria known as Igbos will be joining you sometime soon to also renounce this British imposed slogan called 'Nigerian'. Cheers for embracing freedom!!! |
@Pensniper. Yet it is this same Igbos that fought a war against the rest of Nigeria to be free. It is this same Igbos that want to opt out of Nigeria and you westerners are crying blue murder! Don't get it twisted, the difference between bravery and cowardice is the ability to step into the unknown. Something you western 'one Nigeria' lovers don't know anything about. Back to topic,I was born in the north and I can say that they have used their phantom population figures to rip where they didn't sow . It's so unfortunate for northerners because I think they are starting to realise that the true economic powers in Nigeria are southern Nigerians and they will never catch up. The military is never coming back to restore them back to power. |
I can't blame Asari Dokubo for being angry. For too long, the people of the south-south have been shafted in the name of Nigeria. These people have seen their oil wealth siphoned away to the north that contributes little or nothing to the national economy. Abuja was built with the Oil money of the south-south people. Now the same north that only survives today on the oil wealth of the south-south people is trying to tell the same people that their son GEJ should not be president. He has every right to be angry. The entire basis of Nigeria's unity is all about sharing the oil wealth of the south -South people. This is why northerners and their Yoruba allies will always be the first to scream 'one Nigeria'. As an Igbo man,I support the people of the south-south to take full control of the resources on their lands and even to declare a separate republic if they so wish and not have some northerner who contributes nothing to the national coffer tell them when and where their son should be president. |
I want to say this much to people like Bootstrap,APC supporters and Yoruba people in general. The Igbos have been trying to get out of the British made prison called 'Nigeria' for the last 150 years since they were first forced into it against there will. I can confidently say that if there was a choice between staying Nigerian and having an independent nation of Biafra,90% of all Igbos would vote to have Biafra (the rest of the 10% are Igbos who grew up outside Igboland and don't understand Igbo culture and those who are feeding fat of out of the disaster known as Nigeria and don't want things to change). Igbos want something greater than a political position such as the Presidency, Igbos want to be free. So when you people talk about joining hands to build a 'better nation' I laugh. The best alternative for Igbos for now is to embrace APGA,kick out the rest of the 4 south east Governors including Okorocha in 2015 and strengthen our unity as a people so we can be in a better position to take our political and economic destiny into our own hands. Nigeria is a doomed enterprise which only a dreamer still believes in and the only people who know this are the Igbos and the people of the south-south. |
