The crisis currently rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Benue State took a bloody dimension yesterday after the state’s chairman, Comrade Abba Yaro reportedly led some group of political thugs to attack party chieftains during a meeting in Makurdi, the State capital.

DAILY POST gathered that problem ensued on Monday, during a meeting held at Monatel Hotel, Makurdi, to resolve the issue of appointments in Ogbadibo.

It was learnt that apart from the Deputy Governor, others at the meeting were Tony Odo, the Ogbadibo Local Government Campaign Coordinator for Ortom/Abounu and Chief Johnson Agada, the APC Leader of the same local government.

Comrade Yaro is a native of Ogbadibo.

It was gathered that Chief Agada and other party leaders had insisted that in the interest of justice and equity, it was the turn of Orokam District to produce the Caretaker Chairman, and more so, the district gave APC 100 percent.

Orokam and Owukpa had previously produced caretaker chairman of the local government.

However, this opinion did not go down well with Yaro, who argued that his candidate, Benson Audu was the best man for the job.

He claimed that the Governor had given him the complete control of the council as compensation for his role in the Party’s victory.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that shortly after the Deputy Governor had left the hotel, Abba Yaro, the State APC Chairman, who got wind of the meeting, stormed the hotel about 11.30pm with 6 thugs who beat up Tony Odo mercilessly, upon citing him.

“He severally asked of the whereabouts of Chief Johnson Agada, before he broke a plastic chair on the head of his candidate’s opponent, Tony Odo and he subsequently ordered his boys to stab him on his ear.

“Agada narrowly escaped the attack after which he put a call across to the Deputy Governor to report the incident.

“The victim was taken to a hospital in Makurdi where doctors are battling to save his life”, the source hinted.

Speaking further, the eyewitness said, all memebers present at the meeting were shocked beyond words at the conduct of the APC Chairman, Yaro.

“Honestly, Yaro got himself practically involved in thuggery as he was itching to fight but was successfully restrained by the APC Zonal Chairman for Benue South (Zone C) Murtala Mohammed, who accompanied him”, he added.

When DAILY POST contacted Agada, APC leader in Ogbadibo, he confirmed the ugly incident, saying that Yaro had even at a recent caucus meeting in Ogbadibo averred that the local government belonged to him.

His words, “I’m not surprised because he had vowed to deal ruthlessly with anyone who opposes his choice of caretaker Chairman, Benson Audu from Otukpa District. His insistence on Audu and willingness to destroy the party is not based on justice, equity or merit but personal aggrandizement.

“He came because of me but when I heard what was going on, I refused to come out of my hotel hotel room. I heard him shouting ‘where is Agada’, before he ordered his boy to cut off one of Odo’s ears and they left the scene”.

Another party member who does not want his name in print confirmed the incident, said Yaro had always operated with the highest level of impunity.

“He moves around with a team of Police who have thugs embedded.

“At the Kangaroo stakeholders meeting he organized recently in Ogbadibo, he used the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to intimidate his opponents out of the venue.

“His continued stay in office as State Party Chairman will cost the party and the state dearly. He has never been an asset but a great liability”, he said.

When this reporter contacted the Benue State Police Command, on Tuesday, the police authorities, however, denied knowledge of the incident.

However, when contacted, Abba Yaro said he was in Abuja at the time the said incident occurred.
He added that it was lies concocted by some persons to rubbish his hard earned name and reputation.

Mr zik4ever! U mean 1000 pending applications? DD u really believe dat shit? I call it story for de gods! Was there 1000 pending applications during my own time? Dis is just their own way of delaying every thing! Go to history u ar gona find out dat Belgium is de worst country in visa proccessing. They just specialized in fustrating pple, dats just de fact. Ur frnd and other pple experiencing dis delays.. Shuld just wait and pray for the positive out-come their visas... Note: sometimes they stay up 3-4months before calling up the applicant. Am talking out of experience.

We are on the same page. The applications have piled up at the Belgium Embassy NOT at VFS because of the sluggish way it’s being handled as you have said. I have no reason to disbelieve it because some persons since last month of May and April in some cases like that of the OP have not been processed. Nigerians travel a lot and summer is coming so the pressure may increase. It’s not the number that is delaying the processing of the visas but rather, the delay in processing is making the pending applications to increased. Imagine, how many others have submitted last week and even this week.

No sir! They made clear distinction between him and voting for his candidate/party. I think its part of our growing political culture and development. In Gombe State, they voted massively for Buhari/APC in the Presidential and for the PDP in the Governorship. However, in some areas where the sophistication and political development isn’t same, they just voted one party one way for ALL offices irrespective of the competence, character and person of the candidates. Even unknown persons who spent little or no money and ordinarily stood no chance, were voted because of their party platform. Those are the kind of people that go to the State House of Assembly or National Assembly and only sleep and snore -never sponsoring one motion, bill or even "seconding" one!

Guy you are on ground and well-informed. They love Sule Lamido and appreciate his work but they hated Jonathan/PDP with morbid hatred and the bandwagon effect was in favour of APC. The current Governor has no structure of his own other than the "Buhari brand". Lamido had finished second term and of course didnt contest the election.

Guys, most people of Jigawa State love this man passionately but they couldnt understand why preferred Jonathan. They hated Jonathan/PDP and voted APC but as a person, they love him and the current Governor cannot match him in terms of personal pedigree and profile. He is rightly called the father of modern Jigawa because of his giant strides in terms of infrastructural development.

The worst part of it is... If they finish delaying person.. They will still go ahead and deny de so called visa. Damsel, jst relax they will call u before the week runs out.

I dont think the problem is with VFS but with the Belgium and Dutch Embassy. My guy went to VFS last week and they told him about 1000 applications were pending at the Embassy.

Bro, it’s good to be guided and informed. In both the Senate and the House in Nigeria, the convention has been to appoint an opposition party member to head the Public Accounts Committee as a sort of check to the Executive. Senator Lawan who contested Senate President with Saraki was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts when PDP had majority and Mark was Senate President. The only wise thing is normally to appoint a sort of friendly opposition member. Mark and Lawan were good and if not for the power dynamics, Mark would have prefeered Lawan to Saraki though Mark would also have been somewhat restrained when George Akume a Mark rival from same State emerged as Deputy to Lawan. As it is, a PDP member will head this Committee in both Senate and House. For instance, Saraki could appoint Andy Uba or any PDP Senator who is said to be close to him or who he thinks he can influence.

A fresh battle between the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara and former Minority Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has started.

Gbajabiamila was defeated last Tuesday by Dogara in the pulsating contest for the Speakership.

However, the two sides are now locked in a new war over chairmanships of committees, appointment of principal officers and headship of the Committee on Public Accounts (PAC).

Although Gbajabiamila had last week pledged loyalty to the leadership of Dogara, Daily Sun gathered that he, with the backing of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have made some demands that must be fulfilled if the Dogara’s leadership is to enjoy the support of lawmakers loyal to him(Gbajabiamila ).

The former Minority Leader and his supporters met with members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC last weekend. Prior to the election, he was the candidate adopted by APC for Speaker.

The meeting was fashioned to bridge the crack in the House occasioned by the outcome of the speakership contest.

A source at the meeting revealed that Gbajabiamila’s group gave stringent conditions for accepting to work with the new leadership of the House.

Among the conditions, according to the source, include granting Gbajabiamila’s supporters more committees chairmanship slots. Standing Committees in the House are 89. He said such committees must be Grade ‘A’.

The source said, “yes, there was a meeting between a group of House members who supported Gbajabiamila in the recent contest for Speaker and our party leaders. I can also tell you that talks are going on right now to reconcile all members in the House because all the people involved are APC members . Gbajabiamila wants a special concession to be given to him in form of giving his group more chairmanship slots”.

Apart from that, he disclosed that the former Minority Leader wants to be the one to appoint three out of the four principal officers. Also, Gbajabiamila has requested to be given the opportunity to name a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker who will chair the PAC. A lawmaker from Delta State is being penciled down for the job.

“Our brother, Gbajabiamila wants to appoint three of the four principal officers. He is also asking Dogara to allow him chose a PDP lawmaker that will head PAC”.

The source disclosed that the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, is disposed to all the demands by Gbajabiamila and is asking Dogara to concede.

He said the party has penciled down Gbajabiamila as the House Majority Leader, noting that everything was being done to appease his camp.

However, the Speaker is said to have rejected all the demands. As a result of this hardline stance, the APC leadership, the source said, may take the matter before President Muhammadu Buhari this week.

He said, “there are plans to present the matter before the President and the leader of our party. He is in a position to broker an amicable resolution between the two camps”.

The source noted that there are fears that poor handling of the matter may cause instability in the chamber, claiming that Dogara’s camp believes that Gbajabiamila’s demands were subtle trap for the leadership.

According to him, the thinking in the Speaker’s camp was that allowing the other group to have incredible number of chairmanship slots will infuriate the PDP caucus in the House, forcing it to align with opponents of the Speaker against him.

Meanwhile, responding to the allegation that his boss made such demands, Gbajabiamila’s aide, Smart Olanrewaju, said he was not aware his boss gave any condition for accepting the leadership of Dogara.

He, however, said members of Gbajabiamila group met with the leadership of APC recently, contending that there was nothing wrong if the group made any demand(s).

“I am not aware of such demands. However, there is nothing wrong if the group made any demand during its meeting with the party”, he said.

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje has described last week’s election of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President as a triumph of democracy over individual interests.

He warned against any attempt to challenge his emergence, noting that Nigerian electorate would resist it.
Baraje, who urged the aggrieved senators to reconcile and work together in the interest of the party, said the APC leadership is working assiduously to mend the cracks created by the election of National Assembly leaders.
He spoke with newsmen yesterday during the graduation ceremony of 171 students of Baraje Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies Ilorin, which he founded.
Baraje said the emergence of Saraki was legal, transparent and followed due process as enshrined in the constitution and called for the cooperation of all and sundry to ensure the success of the 8th Assembly.
The APC chieftain described the National Assembly as an independent institution which should not be subjected to the whims and caprices of any body, party or other arms of government, saying the level of awareness among Nigeria’s electorate was becoming higher and that the process through which Saraki emerged was an indication that democracy is greater than any individual.
“The process was legal, there was no breach of any rule of the National Assembly, the National Assembly is not dependent on government, is not dependent of any political party,” he said.

I spoke with someone and she said she had a horrible experience at this Embassy. She is a Foreign Affairs staff and she said it was so frustrating to the extent that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to summon the Ambassador then. Another family friend had real stress with them too. Not a good one for their reputation at all.

How PDP almost claimed the senate presidency

In a bid to resolve the on-going crisis among the All Progressives Congress senators following the election of principal officers of the National Assembly against the wish of the ruling party, the party’s leadership is considering two major options, THISDAY has learnt.

It emerged at the weekend that APC was offering Senator Ahmed Lawan, who was the party’s preferred candidate for the position of senate president, and his group the posts of senate majority leader and deputy majority leader. In the alternative, the party considered to offer a ministerial slot to Lawan if Buhari could be persuaded.

Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, APC’s choice candidates for the posts of senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively, had on Tuesday lost to Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara, in that order. This was due to a defiant collaboration between some members of the ruling APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the National Assembly.

Few APC senators loyal to Saraki and all the 49 senators of the minority Peoples Democratic Party had met on Tuesday morning at the upper chamber and elected Saraki while about 51 APC senators were said to be meeting at the International Conference Centre to try to resolve disagreements that had raged in the party. Dogara’s election followed a similar pattern.

The APC national leadership had promptly reacted by rejecting the emergence of Saraki as senate president and Dogara as House speaker and threatened to sanction the duo and their insubordinate allies. The Lawan group, the Senate Unity Forum, also threatened to challenge Saraki’s election in court.

But the party made a detour on Friday. Sources said the change of attitude was caused by the divergent positions of party leaders on the emergence of the new National Assembly leadership.

The APC leadership is trying to restore peace and unity to the party. It is trying to dissuade the Lawan group from going to court because, according to APC, if they go to court, it may deepen the rift in the party and cause a permanent damage to intraparty relations. It would also give PDP room to exploit the crisis to its own advantage by playing one faction of APC against the other, APC believes.

Besides, the ruling party feels the Senate Unity Forum’s grounds for wanting to sue were weak. The Lawan group alleged that they were denied participation in the election of the senate president. But it has been proven that members of the unity forum actually absented themselves from the inauguration session of the upper chamber that Tuesday.

President Muhammadu Buhari had sent a letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly and specifically stated that the Senate should be proclaimed at 10am on June 9. If the president wanted to change the time, he needed to have sent another letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly to notify him of the change.

One source said the ruling party was even lucky to have some of its members at the senate during the choice of the senate leadership because had Saraki and his supporters joined their colleagues at the International Conference Centre, PDP, which had all their 49 senators in attendance at the inaugural sitting, could have elected Senator David Mark as senate president.

It was gathered that Saraki got to the National Assembly at 5am that day, while some members of his group were there as early as 6am, a development that saved APC from losing the two principal positions in the Senate.

Another thing causing concern among members of the National Assembly is the deployment of policemen to shut the parliament on June 9. Many are wondering who gave the order to the Nigeria Police, because there are no indications that it was Buhari. The suspicion in some quarters is that a leader of the ruling party could have issued the directive to the police.

After the storm, APC is moving to reconcile its members. As part of the effort to restore unity to the party, the APC leadership has, in addition to holding out the olive branch to the Lawan group, also initiated other measures to soothe angry feelings among members. Saraki, too, has intensified moves to reconcile with the party.

THISDAY learnt that APC had set up a three-man committee headed by National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Mai-Mala Buni, which is tasked with reaching out to aggrieved members and recommending ways of reconciling them. A member of the group of senators that supported the election of Saraki as senate president, Senator Dino Melaye (APC Kogi West), confirmed this yesterday.

The APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, had on Friday made a U-turn from the party’s earlier rejection of Saraki and Dogara’s elections, when he said the new senate president “has been duly elected by his colleagues. We have a reality and we must live with it. We have faced greater challenges before and this, too, shall pass away.”

Odigie-Oyegun disclosed yesterday that APC had started a peace process, saying he is confident that the issues in the party would be amicably resolved in the next few days.

We are already insulting each other as usual while the story is incomplete!. The first thing is, if the appointee is a non-indigene, which State is she from? Someone has clarified that she is an indigene but married to someone from Benue State so is she no longer a Kaduna indigene? This is not a favour to "non-indigenes" and the press or anybody should seek political capital from it. She rose through the ranks in Kaduna public service and had reached the peak as a Permanent Secretary so she must have been in the service there for a while. Besides, it is said that she is the most senior Permanent Secretary and well-deserving of the position. Congrats to her and kudos to El-Rufai for acknowledging her personal merit and competence even though she isn’t from his side of Kaduna. That has been part of the problem of that State –ethno-religious discrimination and suspicion. The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has faulted media reports that the immediate past A‎GF, Mr. Jonah Otunla, was fired for allegedly misappropriating N2.5 billion security fund.

The AGF’s office said yesterday that Otunla retired voluntarily as required by civil service rules having clocked 60 years. The office said the story, which was first reported by The Will, an online news portal, and also THISDAY existed only in the realm of fiction.

“Mr. Jonah Otunla the former Accountant-General of the Federation retired honourably at the mandatory age of sixty years, following his 60th birthday on 12th June, 2015 and as required by the Civil service provisions,” a statement by Mrs. K. N. Offie‎, deputy director (press) said.

“Due to the vital operations of Government, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Mr. Danladi Kifasi, informed the office that His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the appointment of Mr. M.K Dikwa, the Director Funds, to Act as the Accountant-General until a substantive Accountant-General is appointed,” the statement explained.

It added that “there was no time the office was under investigation and the office equally never informed the media of any removal from office of its headship, except on account of retirement upon the attainment of the mandatory age of sixty years by the former Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Jonah Otunla on 12th June, 2015.”

In a related development, kinsmen, associates and friends of Otunla yesterday kicked over his reported sack by President Buhari over alleged N2.5billion security fund.

A friend of Otunla and former Secretary to Oyo State Government, Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli told THISDAY that the former AGF had since proceeded on terminal leave.

Alli, a lawyer and also the immediate past Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited said, “I don’t believe this story of his sack yesterday (Friday) by President Buhari. All I know was that he had since put in a letter of retirement and was on terminal leave before former President Goodluck Jonathan left office. He was 60 years old yesterday (Friday) and officially retired from the service of the federal government.”

Also, Otunla’s kinsmen under the banner of ‘Oke Ogun 2019’ described the report of Otunla’s sack as untrue, ill-conceived and intended to cast aspersions on a man who had put in his best to serve his fatherland.

Three different plots but with similar goal: to abort the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly on Tuesday, June 9 failed only when the first leg, and the most crucial one, could not fly.

The first plot was to kidnap the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa (OFR), from his residence in a highbrow district of Abuja in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

If that plot had succeeded, the next stage was a carefully composed text message that would be sent out to National Assembly members-elect of a purported meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre (ICC).

The text message was expected to draw out certain members-elect with a view to keeping them stranded at the ICC while some members would access the two chambers of the National Assembly, get the required numbers and then, conduct elections.

The timing of the meeting was keenly debated but it was gathered that 9:00am was eventually agreed upon.

The third leg of the plan was to ensure that after the favoured group was seated in both chambers, no movement would be allowed into the National Assembly thereafter until the inauguration and election of presiding officers was concluded.

The plan was almost sailing through but for the refusal of the person central to the plot to step out of his house on that Tuesday morning.

But for the refusal of Maikasuwa, to step out of his house in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly would have been aborted.

Saturday Sun gathered from National Assembly sources that the plot to kidnap Maikasuwa few hours to inauguration of the new National Assembly was to keep him incommunicado for several hours.

With Maikasuwa nowhere around the National Assembly, the inauguration would have been suspended as the 1999 Constitution (as amended) stipulates, while the rules in both chambers recognize only the CNA as the legal authority to inaugurate the National Assembly in the President’s stead, after the Proclamation would have been issued.

Saturday Sun gathered that when some unidentified men got to Maikasuwa’s gate, “between the hours of 4:00am and 5:00am, his security details were told to call him from the house because they have an urgent message from President Buhari to give him.”

Maikasuwa refused to fall for the trick. “When he was contacted via intercom and the message was relayed to him, he refused to step out of his private quarters.

Immediately, his security men sensed something was amiss and radioed back to the National Assembly security for help and backup. They sent a distress call to us…”, the source added.

The source however refused to disclose whether help and reinforcement came from the National Assembly Sergeant-At-Arms, the federal legislature’s traditional security agency.

Somehow, Maikasuwa beat the security cordon thrown round his house and made it to the National Assembly. Safely ensconced in his office, he reportedly told his staff that armed with the inauguration Proclamation, which had arrived his office on June 1 from President Buhari, he was ready to do just that at the stipulated time of 10:00am.

With Maikasuwa’s botched kidnap, the second and third leg of the plot was activated. First, the text message was sent out and in fact, Saturday Sun confirmed from reliable National Assembly sources that two set of text messages were sent. The first set was to members-elect and the second was to Maikasuwa.

The first text message directed members-elect to go to ICC for a crucial meeting with Buhari. Some senators-elect complied while some did not. Rather, they headed to the Senate chamber for the inauguration ceremony.

The second text message sent to the CNA directed him to delay the inauguration as members-elect would be meeting with the president at 10:00am. The text message pleaded for a slight delay.

Another National Assembly source disclosed that, “the text message was not from the President because official lines of communication are known; text messages are not known sources of correspondence between the arms of government. If there truly was any need for a delay in the inauguration, the president would have communicated that to the CNA via the same medium the Proclamation came…”

The third leg of the plan: the security cordon around the NASS ensured that as early as 6:00am, nobody was allowed into the National Assembly White House Complex, which houses the two chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives, from the first gate which is usually referred to as the Mopol gate.

Those accredited for the inauguration met security vehicles that were used to block the entrance to the National Assembly complex.

The accredited persons, including the media, protocol and support staff et al were re-directed to access the complex from the Presidential Villa.

At the Villa gate, by the Supreme Court axis, only selected people with the inauguration tags were allowed entry. At a point, Villa security refused even people who had the tags on to access the National Assembly.

Security men, including those from the DSS, Police, Civil Defence as well as the Sergeant- At-Arms told media men who insisted on accessing the complex from the Mopol gate that “the inauguration has been postponed.”

At exactly 9:52am, Maikasuwa, decked in ceremonial robe of bald and gold with the wig, entered the Senate chamber, waited for eight minutes and on the dot of 10:00am, banged the gavel to signal the commencement of the inauguration by reading the president’s proclamation. There were only 57 senators seated. Some were outside the premises while others were at the ICC where they watched the session on live television.
