While we are insulting ourselves here, some of these Senators may be reaching out to each other and lobbying for who will occupy what "juicy" standing committees. I even see some ex-PDP members who are now APC Senators being in the forefront of the shouting. They will sort themselves out. Is it not politics? Are they fighting over how Nigeria will be better? Are they quarrelling and threatening court action over unpaid workers' salaries? I even see a Senator from my State who reportedly robbed someone of his ticket in the primaries and was imposed on original APC members after being schemed out of the PDP primaries, shouting about “injustice”? Did I see someone who allegedly imposed a Governorship candidate who never contested APC primaries and in fact, who actually contested and lost PDP primaries shouting that there is injustice? Ha ba all these emergency democrats should let us be. Mr. President you won election since and you have been in office long enough, please forward your Ministerial list to these people ASAP and let them start earning their pay. In 2 weeks, they will get Bank alert for work not done while public servants are being owed for months in both APC and PDP States. Don’t tell me about collapsing oil price and falling revenue and don’t tell me it’s all the fault of the Federal Government. They had money to pay themselves severance package before retiring to the Senate. Some of them will never move one motion or propose a bill. In fact, some may not even second a motion. Kai! Choi!

PoliticsSaraki, Dogara’s Election Balances Power Equation Among Nigeria’s Zones by zik4ever(op): 1:00pm On Jun 10, 2015
With the election of Bukola Saraki as the Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, all the nation’s six geo-political zones have benefitted from power sharing in the current dispensation.

The zones are North West, North East, North Central, South West, South East and South-South.
While Mr. Saraki hails from Kwara state in the the North Central zone, Mr. Dogara is from Bauchi State in the North East zone.

Both are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The newly-elected Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is an indigene of Enugu State in the South East zone though he is a member of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Yusuf Lasun, is from Osun State in the South West.

The president, Mohammed Buhari is from Katsina State in the North West zone while his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, hails from Ogun State in the South West zone.

The National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun hails from Edo State in the South-South zone.

Of the lot, Mr. Ekweremadu appears to be the luckiest. He was not in contention for the position until the last minute when he was drafted into the race by his party to challenge Senator Ali Ndume who was expected to run with Mr. Saraki.

The South East zone where the deputy senate president comes from did not produce a single senator on the platform of the APC. All the 15 senate and almost all the 38 House of Representatives seats in the five states in the zone are of the PDP. This left the zone with no hope of producing a top political office holder in the APC administration.

Going by the zoning arrangement believed to have been agreed earlier by the party’s leadership, the South East ought to have produced one of the two presiding officers of the National Assembly. But that possibility had been ruled out when the party did not win any seat during the March 28 National Assembly election.

In a nation where ethnic consideration is given the prime place in political appointments, without doubt, Mr. Ekweremadu’s election for the third time for that position will particularly give a sense of belonging to the Igbo race known for its complaint of marginalisation.

The South West on its part produced the vice president and the deputy speaker.

In the last dispensation, the zone had no representative among the top six topmost political positions.

Although the speakership of the House was zoned to the zone with Mulikat Akande from Oyo State as the PDP’s preferred choice, Aminu Tambuwal from Sokoto State in the North West and Emeka Ihedioha from Imo State in the South East zone rebelled against the party’s zoning arrangement and present themselves as candidates for the positions of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

With the emergence of Mr. Tambuwal as Speaker, North West produced occupants of two of the offices, the other being the vice presidential slot held by Namadi Sambo from Kaduna State.

Apart from the zonal balancing, the election of the new presiding officers of the federal parliament also achieved religious equation.

While Messrs Buhari, Saraki and Lasun are Muslims, Messrs Osinbajo, Ekweremadu and Dogara are Christians just as Mr. Oyegun.

In the previous dispensation (2011-2015), of the four presiding officers of the National Assembly, only Mr. Tambuwal belonged to the Islamic faith.

The then Senate President, Messrs. David Mark, his deputy, Ekweremadu and Ihedioha are all Christians. The president at the time, Goodluck Jonathan, is a Christian while Mr. Sambo is a Muslim.

Had Messrs Lawan and Gbajabiamila emerged as Senate President and Speaker, the two chambers would have been headed by Muslims.

PoliticsAlleged 19.2bn Fraud: Court Dismisses Charge Against Sylva by zik4ever(op): 12:48pm On Jun 10, 2015
The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has just dismissed a 42-count criminal charge pending against the Former Governor of Bayelsa State, timipre sylva.

Trial Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed ruled that the charge which was preferred against the erstwhile governor by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,‎ constituted an abuse of court process.

sylva was in the charge, alleged to have used three separate companies and siphoned the sum of N19.2bn from the Bayelsa state treasury.

EFCC insisted that the fraud was perpetuated between 2009 and 2012 when sylva held sway as governor of the state.

sylva is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and was a member of the transition committee of President ‎Muhammadu Buhari.

The Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mr. M.S Diri, had earlier withdrawn another six-court charge against sylva, wherein he was ‎accused of involvement in the illegal diversion of N6.5billion also from the coffers of Bayelsa State.

PoliticsAtiku Congratulates New Senate, House Of Reps Leaders by zik4ever(op): 7:46pm On Jun 09, 2015
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated the newly elected leaders of the National Assembly, admonishing them to see their elections beyond the narrow interests of respective political parties.

The former Vice President in a press statement issued by his media office on Tuesday, noted that with the elections of its presiding officers, the 8th National Assembly should swing to work and put the overall national interest beyond the personal political interests of its members.

Atiku said that with the election of its presiding officers, the 8th National Assembly has prepared the ground work for a full legislative business.

While congratulating the new leaders of the parliament on their election, Atiku reminded every member of both the Senate and the House of Representatives of their responsibilities to their constituents, which, he said, is to put national interest before their individual political interest.

Irrespective of the political mix through which the presiding officers emerged, he noted, the 8th National Assembly should never lose focus of its role as a partner in progress with the other arms of government, especially the executive arm.

“The Nigerian people look up to the new National Assembly to work with the executive arm in finding solutions to the problems of insecurity, poverty, illiteracy and joblessness in the country. Their election is indeed a call to duty, and it is a call for which they cannot afford to fail the nation.”

advocates:
We must commend the President as well as the APC for believing in non imposition of candidates. This is a victory for democracy and not something to begin to celebrate PDP for the emergence of the two candidates. If for nothing, I think PDP supporters should be more ashamed for the impunity and god fatherism they littered our political landscape with. However, something tells me that the out come of this event may have the blessing of the president cos of the earlier stance of president of ' belonging to no one and belonging to everybody.' To my APC friends, bear it in mind that the noise by the PDP rogues is further to feel relevant and perhaps to console one self since there is nothing absolutely to celebrate since the crowned party still call the shot.
The lawmakers took their own destiny in their own hands and voted for candidates of their choice. They rejected imposition!
