Renowned writer, Chimamanda Adichie, although married to her US based Doctor husband, Dr. Ivara Esegee, in a recent interview insists she wants to be addressed as Miss and not Mrs.

Chimamanda Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esegee

Excerpts

Mrs Chimamanda Adichie, welcome back to Nigeria…

Before we start, please, I just want to say that my name is Chimamanda Adichie. That’s how I want it; that’s how I’m ad-dressed, and it is not Mrs but Miss.  Ms: that’s how I want it. I am saying this, because I just got a mail from my manager this morning. It seems that there are people who attended the church service, and they wrote about it, addressing me as Mrs. Chimamanda (Esega). I didn’t like that at all. So my name is Chimamanda Adichie, full stop.

You mean?

This is because it is also responsible that people be called what they want to be called.

You started by telling me that you’re not “Mrs.”

(cuts in) My name is Chimamada Adichie. If you want to put label for me, put Ms.

But people know that you’re married. As an Igbo girl, you know our culture

(Cuts in again) What does our culture do? Let me tell you about our culture. This thing that you are calling our culture –that when you marry somebody, you’ll start calling her Mrs. Somebody –is not our culture; it is Western culture. If you want to talk about our culture, you need to go to people in real Igbo land. But it is true. My grandfather’s name is David. His name is also Nwoye. They call him Nwoye Omeni. Omeni was his mother. You know why? It is to help distinguish him, because there are often many wives. So, it was his mother that they used to identify him. They know that all of these people came from the same compound, but whose child is this one. You may go and ask people who is Nwoye Omeni, and they’ll tell you it is my grandfather. So, conversation about culture is a long one. I don’t even want to have it.

But, at what point would you change your name?

Yes; because it’s all fused. You cannot then come and impose something on somebody. Nobody should come and impose something on somebody, because, if you come and tell me it is our culture, I’ll tell you it is not our culture. Where do you want to start counting? Do you want to start counting in 1920, or do you want us to start counting from 1870?

But culture is dynamic
Exactly my point, which is why this is new. If culture is dynamic, you cannot use it as conservative tool. We cannot then say it has to be this because it is our culture.  My point is that it is a new thing. Things are changing. We live in a world now where women have a right to bear the name they want. So, we cannot say this is how we do it. If some women want to do it that way, that’s fine! God bless them. Some women won’t do it. I am one of those women, and nobody will come to use culture to tell me that I should do what I don’t want to do.
Misguided lady reading life upside down!

Nairaland General › Re: Who Is Dr. Babatunde Adeola Afolabi? by zoedew: 2:30pm On Jan 10
Jimsonjaat96:
I am Dr. Babatunde Adeola Afolabi, born in Ekosin, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.

I come from a humble beginning, and God has used me in diverse ways to positively impact this generation. I firmly believe in influencing the younger generation, as I hold a strong conviction that they have a longer journey ahead.

Recently, I was deeply honored when medical students from across Southwestern Nigeria presented me with an award for my invaluable contributions and entrepreneurial input in medical practice. They expressed a desire to learn from my experiences, and I shared a great deal with them. I will be delivering a lecture for them this September, which I am very much looking forward to.

I believe that people are sent to this generation for various purposes, and in the medical field, I view my work as a calling from God. I am convinced there are still greater challenges to overcome, which I see daily. I have had extensive exposure, traveling to different countries. For instance, I have visited India on several occasions and witnessed remarkable transformations in their health sector. I believe similar progress can be replicated in Nigeria.

I have seen numerous large hospitals in India, owned by individuals, as vast as the University College Hospital (UCH). At one point, I decided to establish a model multi-specialist hospital. Rather than setting it up in Lagos or Abuja, I chose to do it in my community in Osun State. That’s how I founded Favoured Emmanuel Healthcare Limited. At this facility, we perform a variety of procedures with the goal of attracting people from all over the world to benefit from our medical services right here in Osun State.

I have been privileged to work in government hospitals at various levels. I have served as the Head of my Department, Head of the National Health Insurance Scheme, and Head of the Geriatrics Department. I was also the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee for two consecutive terms, making me the longest-serving chairman with five years of service at the University of Osun (UNIOSUN) Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. I was the first to hold that position at UTH Osogbo, and I initiated significant transformations, drawing on the managerial and administrative skills that God has bestowed upon me, particularly during the transition from LAUTECH to UTH.

I also served as the last Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee for LAUTECH Teaching Hospital for two years.

During my tenure in these roles, under the able leadership of my CMD, Prof. Peter Babatunde Olaitan, several previously unaccredited departments, including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, and Radiology, gained accreditation. This was a major milestone, as I entered with a clear plan of action, aiming to create a robust and inclusive system where accreditations would be a priority, given the teaching hospital setting.

I also worked on improving clinical services, which we successfully achieved. New equipment was purchased, better facilities were built, and more qualified personnel were employed. For example, it was during this tenure that we began performing total hip replacements and knee replacements. These efforts significantly enhanced our value as a teaching hospital.

We also initiated collaborations with other organizations, one of which provided us the leverage to build a modular Microbiology laboratory. You would be amazed if you visited our Microbiology laboratory, sponsored by the Fleming grant.

Fleming 2 is currently in progress, and I believe, by the grace of God, it will soon be completed and will hopefully bring an improvement policy. People are achieving great feats in their respective fields. As the Chairman of Manpower Development and Training, we ensured that our staff received proper training across all cadres. As a result, we now have many doctors, health professionals, and PhD holders at our facilities. Their activities have led to the broadening of knowledge, skills, expertise, and experience both individually and collectively. We now have Directors in the hospital with enhanced influence and capacity.

There are numerous other initiatives we've undertaken that have made a significant impact. At one point, I realized we needed to do more. Upon my arrival, I observed the vast potential of the system, so I adopted a committee system approach. This involved placing the right peg in the right hole. By doing so, we eliminated the issues of patients complaining about not being attended to before my tenure. We specifically appointed two consultants, Family Physicians, who have been instrumental in maximizing functionality at our Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital.

We now have a 13-bed capacity for Accident and Emergency care, equipped with monitors and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in a serene environment. People who visit are amazed and remark, "So this can happen in our teaching hospital?" Personnel and machines work seamlessly and effortlessly together. The pressure on my office has also reduced because we aimed to decentralize operations in the Accident and Emergency unit.

When the building was completed, it was empty. Kudos to the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS), we wrote them a letter asking, "Can you partner with us and provide some support?" They donated many items to us, and their generosity was truly surprising.

The current uniforms worn by our security staff were designed by us. When we took over, their uniforms were not good to behold, and I thought, "As security personnel, no one will take them seriously with this unholy appearance. You are addressed by the way you dress." We set up a committee, which I chaired, to design the uniforms and organize a series of training sessions for them.

In terms of training, we initiated what we call "Ground Round" (Labẹ Ọdan). This is a monthly enlightening program where we identify problems in the hospital, explore how to solve them, and then develop a protocol to either resolve or mitigate the issue.

For instance, when people were reluctant to undergo post-mortem examinations, we held numerous discussions and deliberations. We eventually developed a policy that addressed the issue effectively.

At other times, I invite professionals to speak to staff about various topics, including equipment handling. All staff members are required to attend as a matter of duty. These sessions are held in the morning from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m., during which staff can ask questions and receive answers.

Another aspect we focus on is retirement planning. We ask, "What’s your plan after retirement?" We have also put measures in place to address this.

I also delivered a lecture on customer satisfaction.

Additionally, we have organized several workshops, some of which focused on attitudinal changes and traditional medicine input in the 24th century. I invited notable figures such as Professor Oyelami and Dr. Oluseyi Atanda, among others.

Overall, a lot was achieved during my tenure.

In my private life, I run an NGO, which I started in 2008. It’s my way of giving back to society. I visited a community in Ogbomosho and realized that many people there were facing challenges. They were hardworking but underprivileged. So, I took my team there, and we conducted free medical consultations and surgeries. We also distributed various gifts and food items.

While I was there, I met a student whose academic performance touched me deeply. I decided to support him, and today, he is in his second year at ABUTH Medical School, Zaria.

I always pay visits to motherless baby homes and correctional centers. In fact, I took my staff on a courtesy visit to the correctional center in Ilesa, Osun State. During our interaction, we had a fellowship, provided food to the inmates, and offered free medical services. One of the inmates, who acted as an intermediary, told me that he was once a doctor and had been in prison for years. I was moved to tears.

I have provided three boreholes in my community at Ekosin, with three more currently under consideration. I also grade the roads in my community from time to time. We periodically donate palliatives to the community, and the transformer we use was facilitated with our support.

At least once a year, I organize free medical outreach for the less privileged. I could list many more initiatives, but these are just a few examples. I thank you.
Nice story. He is for real. A very compassionate Family Medicine Doctor.

Abel7777:
The Family of a 15 Years Old Girl, Ummi Tambaya from Kano State have raised the alarm after some youths kidnapped and allegedly connieved with a shari'a commander to forcefully convert their daughter to Islam from Christianity.

Ummi a native of Kadafa Bari District, Rogo L.G.A Kano State went missing since 1st December after a young Muslim man from the village who has been asking for her hand in marriage despite the family's refusal was accused of abducting her but initially denied knowing her whereabouts.
There is no genocide against Christians in Nigeria. So they say!

According to Pastor Kabiru Usman who is familiar with the case, "after a long search and relentless efforts, we discovered the girl has been kept under the custody of the Hisbah Commander of Rogo, Malam Sani that she wants to convert to Islam.

"Close persons to the Hisbah Commander revealed that Abba Sheshu, Mansir Surajo and one Tasi,u Bello were the persons who abducted her for a whole month despite her mental illness and prevented her from seeking medical help"

Usman further revealed that despite the interventions of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Rogo, Suleiman Ibrahim and the vilege district head name Umar Abdulkadir, the Hisbah Commander refused to produce the said girl.

Kabiru further lamented how the Department of State Services (DSS) office in the area remained indifferent towards the case and rather than rendering help, an officer, one Abdulrashid Muhammad Abubakar collected the sum of Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000) from a member of the family to be used for fueling of the vehicle from the State Headquarters.

"It will surprise the public to know that the DSS in the state have refused to act on this matter. In fact, one of their officers in the Local Government collected money up to N20,000 that officers from the headquarters needed it to buy fuel".

"We are appealing to relevant authorities to come to our aid. The family of Ummi are traumatized, we don't know her present condition and we are afraid the culprits will escape this because we have had five other similar cases of forceful conversions of our girls in the area.

"They lied to us that Ummi was with Human rights, it was a lie. The Hisbah Commander is fully aware of her whereabouts. Let those concerned come to our aid", he pleads for help.

BREAKING: ‘I’ll not surrender Rivers N700bn IGR to Wike’ — Fubara blows hot

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has declared he will not yield to demands to hand over ₦700 billion, representing 35% of the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR), to anyone, sparking a heated power struggle with former Governor Nyesom Wike, now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister.

The dispute has raised concerns about the welfare of Rivers State citizens, with 4.4 million people living in multidimensional poverty.

The feud between Fubara and Wike, who unilaterally chose Fubara as his successor, has escalated into violent confrontations, defections, and legal battles.

Wike has threatened to make Rivers State “ungovernable” if Fubara doesn’t comply, while his supporters have vowed to “deal with” Fubara.

In response, Fubara has warned that he won’t be intimidated, saying “Rivers State is not a playground” and that he’s prepared to defend the state’s interests.

His supporters have also threatened to mobilise protests against Wike and his allies.

The crisis had paralysed governance, prompting President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The situation remains tense, with both sides maintaining their respective stance.

The outcome will have significant implications for Rivers State and Nigerian politics.

The dispute highlights concerns about godfatherism in Nigerian politics and its impact on governance.

Wike has accused Fubara of being ungrateful, while Fubara sees Wike’s demands as an attempt to undermine his authority.

Politicstoday:
https://leadership.ng/fubara-its-better-we-all-resign-rivers-speaker-declares/

Today during her plenary session, the Rivers State House of Assembly marks a significant escalation in the state's long-running political crisis.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, delivered a scathing assessment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the commencement of impeachment proceedings.
Below is a word-for-word analysis of the key statements that are currently making the rounds.

1. Siminalayi Fubara is a mistake; Rivers State has never had it this bad:
Context: Martins Amaewhule uses this to frame Fubara's entire tenure as a systemic error rather than a series of policy disagreements.
My Take: By calling the Governor a "mistake," the Speaker is signaling that the legislative arm no longer recognizes the Governor's political legitimacy. The phrase "never had it this bad" is a hyperbolic appeal to public sentiment, designed to justify the "extreme" measure of impeachment as a necessary corrective action for the state's survival.

2. Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy are nothing but a threat to democracy.
Context: The Speaker links the Governor and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu together as a collective "threat."4

My Take: This is a tactical legal framing. Under Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, impeachment requires proof of "gross misconduct." By labeling them a "threat to democracy," the Speaker is elevating administrative lapses (like budget delays) to the level of constitutional subversion, which is easier to defend as a "gross misconduct" charge.

3. He has been saying to his followers that this 10th Rivers Assembly is nothing but a toothless bulldog:
Context: Amaewhule is responding to alleged private remarks made by Fubara regarding the legislature’s power.

My Take: This highlights the ego war driving the crisis. The Speaker is using the Governor’s own purported rhetoric—"toothless bulldog"—to goad the other 26 lawmakers into action. It frames the impeachment as a matter of legislative honour and institutional relevance, rather than just a political hit.

4. This is a sad commentary for our democracy:
Context: Used when referring to the fact that Rivers is the only state in Nigeria that has allegedly not presented or passed its 2026 Appropriation Bill.

My Take: This is the "hook" for the legal argument. In Nigeria, failing to present a budget is a serious fiscal breach. By calling it a "sad commentary," Amaewhule is attempting to occupy the moral high ground, suggesting that the Assembly is acting out of a sense of duty to democratic norms rather than personal vendetta.

The 7 Allegations Breakdown
While the Speaker provided the "rhetoric," the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, read the specific charges, the "word-for-word" allegations in the notice include:
1. Constitutional Breach: Refusal to present the 2026 Budget (Appropriation Bill).
2. Fiscal Misconduct: Spending state funds without legislative approval.
3. Contempt of Judiciary: Refusal to comply with Supreme Court rulings on financial autonomy.
4. Property Destruction: The 2023 demolition of the Assembly complex.
5. Withholding Funds: Allegedly seizing salaries and allowances of the legislature.
6. Obstruction: Hindering the Assembly Service Commission.
7. Executive Interference: Allegedly converting state funds to dollars to influence federal officials.

IN SUMMARY
The timing of impeachment saga is crucial. Following Governor Fubara’s December 2025 defection to the APC, many expected the tension to cool. Instead, the video shows that the pro-Wike faction (who also identify as APC) is using Fubara’s own new party platform against him.

The Speaker's language is notably de-personalized at times—insisting the fight is between "the Governor and the Constitution," not Wike and Fubara. This is a deliberate attempt to neutralize the "godfatherism" narrative that has previously gained Fubara public sympathy.

I REST MY CASE
He speaks well!

It has gotten to a point where Lai Mohammed's discredited face is a source of disgust and cynicism for almost all observers whenever he appears in the media. No one wants to hear whatever drivel he has to say because it is expected that he will lie or insult sensibilities with his characteristically arrogant and distasteful demeanour. The man is now clearly a waste of public space and a colossal liability to Buhari's government.

I'll nominate the genteel, persuasive, and highly dignified Chukwuemeka Chikelu as the best minister of information so far since 1999. He had a way of passing his message across elegantly and defending the government of the day (Obasanjo's) persuasively without offending sensibilities and arrogantly talking down on the public. Too bad Obasanjo had to later replace him with the brash and combative Frank Nweke-Junior because he felt that Chikelu was not 'harsh' enough.

Other candidates include:

Frank Nweke-Junior
Dora Akunyili
Labaran Maku
Prof Jerry Ghana

This is a great opportunity for Nigerians to deepen Democracy by emphasising Constitutionality such that the common man on the street gets knowledgeable about its provision and how important it is to a country. See, I can send you video of an analysis to see that Tinubu is more grounded now than 2023.
What can Wike deliver, at best, his state which is Rivers state. Can he deliver state which is not his own? How many state governors in Nigeria are still his pally? But the Tinubu of today has all the federal might, resources and almost all the states, then to top it up, he put his tribesman as the INEC chair. I am not insinuating anything, but since 1999, in the Maurice Iwu's days, no one from the west has ever been INEC chair. Ephraim Akpata was once a Chair, but making now a Yoruba the chair is sending a statement. Wike is just one person and his influence has been greatly reduced. APC stalwarts are not jittery for Wike's sake. APC national secretary still told him days ago some facts that he is with Fubara because the state governor is the party leader's in a state accroding to APC constitution. Go and check it. Wike is a drowning man. He is not more influential than BAT.

I am not a fan of all of them...because at best they have run the country aground...on the ground of personal interests and not common patriotism, even Buhari would be proud of his days of he were alive, even though he was a failure
