Pls let us exercise restraints and put the ugly past behind us. No one is perfect. Either Murtala, ahmadu bello, tafabalewa, awolowo, Nzeogu, Dimka or Ojukwu. We should stop celebrating any of them as if they were saints. Many of them were influenced by their tribal instincts sometimes. If some of them are alive today, they would probably regret some of their past actions. So we should stop reminding ourselves of the unfortunate incidents of bloodshed of yesteryears. Nigeria seriously needs a stakeholders conference to address some of this past and present issues tearing us apart. A lot of innocent souls have been lost in this nation. Our union should not be built on brutal force but on the willingness of member states to succeed togeda. This is what i think the present leaders should be working to acheive.

In other words, Igbos should sing praises of a man directly responsible for the deaths of Igbo children to prove that they have "moved on".

Did Biafra Army kill any Nigerian citizen; including women and children?

He's the GOAT(greatest of all time) and the only true pan-African Nigerian leader ever...

CIA and MI6 had to kill him for being too pro-Africa and for getting too close to the Soviet..

He was definitely a great leader..

"Perhaps worst of all was the unpardonable sin committed by Mohammed when he declined an official visit by U.S. Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger which was proposed for May of 1976.

U.S.intelligence-gathering operations likewise escalated at an alarming pace during Mohammed's rule. In a 20 January 1976 cable from Lagos to Washington, for example, U.S. Ambassador Donald Easum warned:

"If Nigeria wants to use oil as a political weapon to promote its foreign policy, this would not necessarily involve further nationalisation. But could mean FMG is considering ways it might assert greater control over which consuming countries get Nigerian oil, depending on positions those countries take on foreign policies issues of interest to Nigeria. We understand several other possibly important papers/addresses delivered at senior officers meeting, reportedly including Un/Ife scholar's advocacy of Nigeria's using oil weapon. We and consul Ibadan will attempt obtain relevant papers and will report further if warranted."

And yet another secret dispatch, written less than two weeks before Mohammed was killed, hints that U.S. officials were prepared to sabotage Nigeria's booming economy. Nigeria, wrote Ambassador Easum on 2 February 1976, "desires to play leadership role, [and will] require modern army if its power (within African context) is to be credible. Further, it likely that given foreseeable internal political realities, Nigeria will maintain relatively large army for some time to come."

The same telegram listed a series of modern weapons likely to be acquired by the Nigerian government, and asserted the belief that a "civilian government might exercise a more restraint." But it ended on an even more bitter note:

"One development would act as a constraint on Nigerian arms purchases: a sharp drop in the price of petroleum. Defence budget would presumably have to be cut proportionately with fall in revenue if government were to meet minimum developmental and social demands on its resources. Easum."
Apartheid South Africa had maintained to the Europeans and the Americans that a self-sufficient Africa would trigger trade competition and incent investments in Africa, with below market labour cost that would threaten the Apartheid government's ability to exist.

Therefore, Pan-Africanists had to be defeated. Three leaders were targeted -Murtala Muhammed, Joe Savimbi and Muhammar Ghadaffi.

Great point. I would have placed Murtala Muhammed as Nigeria's No 1 leader, but that place has been taken by Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Still, Gen. Murtala Muhammed was one of Nigeria's greatest leaders and will remain very highly regarded by the people.

Are you this dumb, or just feigning it because of the crumbs you get to munch from time to time?

Why the fvck did you put a noble man in the same sentence with the dumbest and worst leader ever to come out of Africa?

I put this to you: you're a cat-50 m0ron!! grin

The Igbo have never lifted a finger to hurt any Hausa man in their midst rather it is the Hausa man who regularly kills Igbos in their midst and even yoruba christians just in case you have missed the info before since 1948 and still ongoing(So tell me who is who's enemy). You know what boko haram has been doing to Igbos and christian in the North for over 3 yrs now. Rather that isolate and treat the source (Hausa)they welcomed and mingle in the embrace of the yoruba Tinuba and Lia (tell who is betraying humanity here not just Igbo?)

General Ojukwu of Blessed memory led Igbos to an attempt to have their own country because Igbo's insisted in this if you are objective even as wicked as a heart may be you will sympathize with a people who where killed in the millions in the polgrom all over Norther Nigeria.
Ohhh my heart bleeds as I recount these events, In Kano in 1966 when the Hausa soldiers started the polgom there was a secondary school called the Igbo union secondary school where most of the sojourner sent their wards to be educated, on this fatefull school day an Hausa soldiers besieged the school killed the male students and teachers and bundled beautiful queens of Igbo extraction some (ooh i cry)most of these girls were virgins and took these innocent children to their hausa LEPERS to defile (GOD IN HEAVEN MUST REWARD THIS GROUP). Sad to admit but the Igbos where truly DEFEATED. But out of the ruins of Igbo woman has arisen the Likes of Okonjo, Ekwesili, Otie,Dora whoes international accomplishment dwarf those of even the Highest mallam.
So you see with all these horror events still unfolding it was not an option not to go away from Nigeria. Why do you think the Isrealies supported the Igbo with mercenaries and Pilots cos they new that they shared something special with the Igbo.
errm bros, not to piss on your parade, but Israel never supported Biafra. Please read your civil war history well. That Israeli support is just something that some fraudulent Igbos have been pushing around forever, just like the Awolowo suicide, genocide claims, etc. Too many lies have been passed from Igbo parents to children that I don't even know where to begin.

Yes you are right he paid the price for tthe various bloody masacre of innocent bloods. I wonder what's is keeping the likes of gowon (pray for naija my foot), obasanjo, danjuma and their likes alife? All them murderers should all kiss the dust for all I care.

firstolalekan: ROLE IN THE CIVIL WAR

The Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) lasted for thirty blood-soaked months and one of the principal actors of that sad phase of Nigerian history was Murtala. During the war, he was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army 2nd Division. Although he flouted rules from the top and brushed aside orders from the Army Headquarters, Murtala took no atom of nonsense or disobedience from his juniors. He commanded his division with the ruthlessness and determination of an Alexander the Great and they had some spectacular victories -and some unforgettably stinging defeats in the hands of the Biafran soldiers.

It was his division that routed forces of the Biafran Army and expelled them from the Midwest Region (discussed above), and from there he moved up to cross the River Niger to join the 1st Division which was on its way to Enugu City and Nsukka. At a point during the war, 28-year-old Murtala and his men reportedly stormed Asaba, Delta State and supervised an Fun of killing of innocent civilians.

Anytime a northern leader is mentioned or any news about the north, the igbos always abuse or are happy with the situation in the north. We are one and if we cannot show concern for one another, then we are going nowhere

Why are you filled with hate for the IGBO (what have they done to you personally) much so it make you wish to turn away from glaring truths but you need to understand that you cannot wish away the the even as Igbos are still marginallized in the modern day Nigeria.
I put it to you that it is your parents who have told you lies and cover up lies about the Igbos and also about the liberation attempt of 1967.
You reallyu need to read history and not rely in account from you elders about the attempt of 1967 and events which lead to it:
Just to clear things up alittle for you:
The Igbo Never said Awolowo commited suicide they said awolowo did the ff:

1.After Gen. Ojukwu released awo from calabar prison while all the northern carnage was on going like any other humanbeing awo did what came naturally he despised the Hausa for their wickedness and decided to carry the yoruba along with biafra in pulling out of the Union. This is why the Biafran army had many yoruba soldiers and officers (including Banjo who understandably had a rethink along with his kinsmen)at the begining of the attepmt even wole soyinka was a biafran at heart but later on under the pressur of treats (1 mile corridor from kwara to the atlantic)and lobying (political advantage over the igbos at least and equality with north) from north, Awo betrayd the agreement with ojukwu and sided with north.

2. Awo was respossible for the the starvation of many Igbos the food Blockade.

3. Awo impoverished the Ibos and Nationalized all multi-nationals

Articles abound with details about his roles in the point listed.

See you call the polgrom claims, clips of the genocide of the igbos is all over youtube as captured by international journalist. it will not harm you to educate yourselve. This genocide is still ongoing with Boko hm and other silent killing allover the north. etc

the Igbo parents donot need to tell their children anything for the children to undertand the environment they live in. den no dey tell blind man say rain dy fall. children born in the 70 Know that when they wrote the common entrace examinations they had to score Highest above other tribe in Nigeria cos the cut off mark was 200 will youruba 150 and Hausa 80 .even with JAMB they had catchment areas system to favor the North in admissions this is no fairy tale it happened and is still happening the children see this and even ask dady why? The Igbo children also have documents and clips to educate them about their cultural experiences in this union.

Isreal, france, Rhodesia and South Africa, supported Biafra with secret consignments of arms and ammo. there was a wellknown Isreali Pilot for the Biafran B26 bombers call Johnny He flew for Biafra totally for free.read more and enlightened.
Rather than lie to your self.

While he was in power, my father once told us he was a man who does not carry many escort and he once saw him in the bank while they were on a queue . People paved way for him to collect his money on time but he chose to remain in the queue . A man for the people.but as a military, he was not all for the people.

It appears Igbo people see everybody as their enemy. They castigate everybody because of their phantom belief that they are the wisest and have a 'manifest destiny' in Nigeria. I know you will disagree with this, it will be difficult, if not impossible, even in a free and fair election for the best Igbo brain to win a presidential election. They have cursed all Nigerians. Where do they hope to get votes, among only the Igbo? Even there is no unity among them. Look at what happens in presidential elections, they don't have a consensus candidate. T Y Danjuma has told you people to put your house in order. A word is enough for the 'wise'.

owobokiri: Murtala was more of an empty vessel that made endless noise. If your typical example of action leader is Murtala then you have it all twisted. Ego driven, he was more interested in sacking all the top beuracrats around. You can point to the many dismissals he made without finding anything he built. A blood thirsty iddiot on steroid, he supervised the worst slaughter of defenseless civilians in the history of this country pre-Obasanjo. There should be a Dimka for every Murtala. The bastard is surely rotting in the hottest part of hell

You are quick to mention the evil you felt was done to the Igbo, leaving the ones done by the Igbo to other people. Read Elechi Amadi's "Sunset on Biafra." If the Igbo had won the war we won't be hearing this. Your case is like that of a student that will always give excuse for his failure. Your are wise indeed.
