Ill-treatment of Nigerians at embassies

OCTOBER 30, 2013 BY OUR READER

I paid a visit to an embassy (a first world country embassy) sometime ago, alongside a brother. We arrived very early in the morning in order to get a registration number among the first 10 people but I was shocked when I discovered that as early as that was, many Nigerians were already swarming around the gate like bees which have just located nectar. I witnessed a mini crowd of people who wanted visas to travel out of the country. I could not help asking, “What is wrong with us?” I know readers would want to quickly point out to me that those people might have very good reasons to want to travel outside the country. Some might want to go for further studies, visit their relatives or even to seek greener pastures. But the question is, how much humiliation do we have to subject ourselves to in order to get those visas? No matter how good our reasons may be.
A well-travelled human resource personnel spoke about her visit to the American embassy in order to renew her visa. Since you have to be attended to without any form of privacy, it means the other people in line would know if you were granted the visa or not. She witnessed a young white folk asking a Nigerian student what he needed a visa for. He replied that he wanted to go for his Master’s degree in Economics. Then, the officer asked him, “Define recession”. At first, he was dumb-founded because he felt he was not coming for an examination or job interview. At most, documents to prove his admission into the foreign school could have been requested and not a subjection to random quizzing. Where is that protocol enshrined in the visa-granting policy? Is this another face of mockery? Though this Nigerian hesitated, as if caught in a frenzy, he went on to give a brilliant definition of the concept. On the same day, a nun who also wanted to travel, was asked to list the first four books of the New Testament and she went on reciting Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus and so on instead of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. She was simply another apprehensive Nigerian caught in this web.
It is no longer news that Nigerians now have to pay a bond of about N750,000 if they would gain entry into the United Kingdom. As disturbing and unsettling as this move is, nothing irks one more than to discover that Nigerians would not still mind borrowing money from friends, families or even sell property all in a bid to get visas. We can take a cue from T.Y. Bello’s track and believe in the ‘Nigerian Dream’ because our land is not just green; it is greener than some of these places we rush to. Probably, we would put on our thinking caps now that the American visa lottery has Nigerians exempted from its programme. We need to build our country for this is where we belong when all has been and done.
Why would we have to let our self-esteem be dragged through the mud because we want to visit someone else’s country for whatever good reason? I would rather let that embassy officer keep his visa. If he believes his country is better, why did he come down to work in Nigeria? My country remains, for me, a land of milk and honey any day, anytime and I am optimistic I will make it here. I do not need to lay myself open to ridicule and degradation in the name of obtaining a visa out of my country. It is high time we said enough to this ignominious treatment by immigration officers at the various embassies in Lagos. We are not asking to be pitied or helped out of our country. We know things are not perfect here and have yet to know where on earth such a perfection exists. However, never in the name of being interviewed for visa should Nigerians be regarded as slaves asking for freedom from the masters. We are free born and demand the right treatment much more, in our land. I hope this message reaches the appropriate quarters and this ugly trend does not continue.

Yes Nigeria is bigger, Nigeria has higher GDP. Ghana has better education system, Ghana has better per capital, Ghana has better health care, Ghana has better security.

You can't compare china to japan, china might have more population and bigger GDP but they fall short on everything else compare with japan. So shut up. GDP and pop don't te the whole store. HDI and per capital tell better story if you didn't know that.

Cant you see that not even Ghanaians want to be Ghanaians?! Thats how when we opened our doors and allowed you people to enter Nigeria as refugees, you almost overran the whole country, selling check-check at all our bus-stops, selling Kelewele on the streets, selling fake drugs on public transports, stealing from us, eating Kenkey and tilapia on the road, shitting into the gutter after filling your tummy with Banku and Okra stew and making our nation dirty. Thats why we sent our scouts into the streets to catch you people, thank God for your distinguishing skin color, it made you people easy to catch like rats.

Now you people are spreading like an epidemic. Brazil gave you visa to go watch match, everybody has gone back home Even Cameroon that was eliminated before you have all returned home Nigeria sef that stayed longer than you have returned home, but Ghanaians are seeking asylum status and hiding inside churches. South African immigrations and Police are still hunting down illegal Ghanaians since 2010 world cup.

Please leave Nigerians out of this.. No be we dey wan abandon our country.
