A few minutes after getting some drugs, Gozie returned to see Sam vomitting. Ugo held a bucket of water and he assisted in making him take some drugs.

"E be like say we need one fine babe wey go nurse this pikin o!" Ugo observed. Gozie turned and led the young boy back in and ensured he was calm. He stood hands akimbo and peeped out the window, thinking what to do, drifting off as the sail on a yacht. This was truly getting out of hand.

He remembered digging on Mr Ibe and his whereabouts. It wasnt yet conclusive. But he assured himself that it would soon all be over and he would be free from any obligations. He was getting pissed , yet it wasnt yet a week into 'business. He shut the door behind him and fell asleep on the chair, totally ignoring the fumes that filled the air from Ugo's cigarettes.

---------------------------------------------------------

Mr Ojemba arrived his son's school and headed for the Principal's office. He was taken aback by the quiet atmosphere. He checked a few classes and discovered they were empty, save a few. He sighted the school Bursar and soon introduced himself eagerly. He had no time to waste.

The Bursar was about dialling the Principal's number when he requested he did that himself, and this wasnt official, so to speak.

"Hello Mr Pius, Mr Ojemba speaking." He heard some noise and cut the call.

"Sir, you seem in a haste. Any message i can deliver on your...." the bursar asked.

"I'l be back madam. Il be back." he repeated as he tapped the desk with his keys repeatedly.

"Alright sir. We'l be expecting you. Goodday sir." she responded, but he was already gone. She wondered why he acted that way.

--------------------------------------------------------

Repeated chants of 'Headmaster' filled the air for minutes before the junior teams kicked off. Everyone stood still as though in honour of a legend. Louis was distraught about the alias, but gave up. There was nothing much he could do. He looked about from the centre circle and spied Mr Ojemba making his way through to the front. He seemed restless as usual. He sighted the Principal and began a conversation with him. The referee blew the whistle for the match to begin.

As though waiting to be compelled, the opposing team began their chants of 'Global', while the students of Crown replied back earnestly with 'Headmaster'. Louis felt his heartbeat racing as he ran through the field, wanting to leave his mark on the field.

He got hard tackles, but soon left a mark as he scored this time with his foot, beating his marker and the goalkeeper to make it 1:nil in favor of Triple C.

The excited principal tried hard not to break the conversation he had with Mr Ojemba who was equally distracted seeing his captive son's friend becoming the hero.

"Your son's friend...." The principal remarked. "He seems determined on representing Sam with every move he makes."

Mr Ojemba could only sigh in reply. ' Headmaster' was all he could utter at the end of the match which ended 3:nil, Louis grabbing all the three goals; a hattrick hero. He looked for Mr Lambert and saw him jumping excitedly as though he was'nt the Deputy-Principal. He was about leaving when Louis set himself free from the crowd that lifted him high and raced toward Mr Ojemba.

"He would come soon. I can feel it!" Louis panted as he spake.

Mr Ojemba looked at the face of the boy who held his hands. The urge to weep came, but he overcame it quickly.

"Thank you!"

And that was the very first time in a year he uttered those very words to a soul! He strolled to his car and sped off.

Not long after they arrived back at school, Super Mario assembled the students and congratulated the senior team. Then he praised the heroic efforts of one of the students...

"Olaniyan, come up here." he ordered and as the slim, lanky boy climbed the stairs, a faint applause started somewhere and soon expanded across the entire school. Louis was not used to this. Where the courage came from he could'nt tell.

He looked down on the entire school and saw his friends. No wonder Super Mario felt 'presidential' viewing the school from than height. Then the Principal encouraged them to do better and reminded them of their exams which was a few weeks away. He dismissed the assembly, but called Louis into his office.

"Sit down. Sit down!" Mr Pius directed.

"I saw what you did today. That was brave of you. Seems all you needed is in place and you've improved from a shy, weak looking fellow to a brave, influential student. I hope you can also convert that to good grades?" he leaned forward, fingers folded as he delivered his observations. Louis could only look down and nod at every word. The principal was right.

"You can get going, but tell your parents il love to see them come friday"

"Okay sir."

"And...... Remember your friend wherever he is, if alive would be proud of you!" he added just as Louis was about exiting and picked up a pen.

"Thank you sir. Goodbye sir" Louis replied and ran in time to meet up with Daddy Bright with Helen. He got in the car and they headed home.

Helen looked at who her brother was becoming. She loved every bit of it. A hero-brother! She now had two hero-brothers. Any sister in the world would pray for that.

----------------------------------------------------

"Sam. Sam! Wake up. How are you feeling now?" Ugo didnt seem to care the boy needed the sleep. As he occupied himself with Sam, Gozie stood up from his deceptive sleep and went to make a decisive call.

"Hello, is this the Area command unit. I want to speak with the DPO. Oh..... He isnt available. Erm... Tell.... Okay, il call back. The name isnt important, but its..." He cut the call as soon as he sighted Dele and Fredo walking in. He adjusted and pretended as though he had just woken, stretching his arms to sell it. They didnt seem to notice.

"Oga don call us o! He get job for us. Like assistance sort of!" Fredo said as he sat at the only table in the room. Gozie's eyes brightened and he played his card.

"Why Oga go dey inform you ahead of me?"

"Guy relax now. Your phone no dey available like ten minutes ago." Dele answered.

Gozie relaxed, but showed his disdain at the idea. He turned to see Ugo staring at him like an observer. He melted and realized he needed to act normal as possible to avoid suspicion.

"How the boy be sef?" Dele asked.

"Just malaria joor. Today na day 5 and oga promise us just 4days. I hope he will settle the....." Gozie cautioned himself with hesitation. He conclude it was best he sleep off, or pretend to do so. He opted for the latter and soon they left him alone at his corner. Betrayal was best played silently and in the dark.

-------------------------------------------------------

"So who exactly did you say called?" Srgt Okoro asked as he sat at his desk. The officer narrated how the call came through.

"Hmm someting is going on. Where is the number?"

"It was a private number sir."

"Hmm"

"How did he sound?"

"Like a man in his late twenties or so. The area was windy, but calm also."

"I see." Srgt Okoro remarked and picked a file and gave the officer. " Go through this report and be back in an hour."

"Yes sir!" and the corporal saluted and took his leave.

Seargent Okoro removed his beret and rubbed his head. His superiors had taken over the case quite surprisingly. The meeting went well, but just as it reached its conclusion, the Sergeant-Major announced that the kidnap case would henceforth be handled by his boys for 'effective delivery'. He stood aghast and tried to make some points, but was ordered to step aside. He felt embarassed as the case was'nt yet a week old and now it was off his hands.

Then he remembered Mrs Hauwa. His boys had brought her over for questioning. She seemed cooperative and was soon released half an hour later. She was self employed. He stood up and searched frantically for a file. His face reflecting anger and anticipation at the same time. The file was not there.

"Who was this woman?" he roamed restlessly in his office.

A sharp knock recalled him back to reality.

"Sir a message from the Inspector!"

"I dont understand." he grabbed the laptop and read through the mail. He felt loose and collapsed back weakly into his chair.

"Its alright! I'l tell my boys."

An order from above to relieve his boys off patrolling as well. How ironic. He called for a meeting with his boys.

"Hello wassup"

"Hello who's on the line"

"Its me Bolu!"

"Oh my!" Elizabeth exclaimed. "why did it take you long to call?"

"Just school stuff. I hope you're good? And the football tourney?"

"Sure. Im fine. Its really getting interesting. Your little brother is setting here on fire."

"Hmm, Louis.. I'l get back to you in the evening. We'l talk better then. I've got some things to do. Do take care of yourself. Bye"

"Alright, you too. I'l be expecting, bye!" Elizabeth dropped the phone and mused. She stretched and fell back on her bed. She expected his call. His voice, his composure, everything about his personality made her quake. She was simply head over heels with him. "I hope he is too?" she thought. She stood up excitedly and prepared to visit her cousin and confidant, Brenda. She needed to know what was up. But she cautioned herself almost immediately. Bolu hadnt made a move. She headed out anyway. She didnt mind if he did or not. It was just a matter of time.

--------------------------------------------------

Mr Ojemba got home faster than he did on previous occasions. He recalled what happened between him and Louis and was shocked at the emotion the young boy could pull out of him. Being emotional was'nt his thing. It was for women, his father once told him when he was young. At the slightest opportunity, he suppressed them, and gradually became a hard man as he grew in his youth.

His wife noticed this new attitude and queried him. He waved her and adviced her to avoid such discussions. He felt the best way to bury this was provide adequately well for his family and it worked, but it wasnt enough for his kids who felt he was detached from their lives as they grew up.

He opened the door and slid down the wall, weeping. Whatever broke a man's will, stubborn as it may seem, was surely stronger than zeal. Words? Hope? He reflected on the damage his actions had done to friends, colleagues, business partners and the likes and the hurt grew in his chest like an anvil repeatedly hit by a mallet.

There was more to life than making things difficult for others, especially when one had the power to change their circumstances. Mr Ojemba realized he had failed many over the years.

He heard a siren approaching from afar and he quickly gathered himself together and scurried out of sight. He knew it was in his direction they were heading. For what exactly he could'nt ascertain.

The Sergeant knocked repeatedly and gave up when no one answered. His men opened the unlocked door and walked in cautiously

"What's going on here?" they spread out and searched the three-bedroom flat. Constable Nwakali raised an alarm, making the rest to hurry towards the room. They were shocked at what they saw!

"What!!" Sergeant Okoro was taken aback.

"Please... Quickly get him out of here! Fast he rapped and they lifted him off the wall.

Mr Ojemba had used a sharp knife to severe his vein. The cut on his arm was deep and scary. He was already in a pool of his own blood. He was unconscious already

"This occurence this afternoon has just ruined my day" one of the officers remarked. Their boss watched on in disbelief as his men carried him out. He wished the case had not been taken out of his hand. The urge to bring the kidnappers to book burned within him and he concluded he would have a hand in it, official or not. At least his boys were loyal to a fault.

Operating behind orders could get interesting. This was'nt his first time.

The officers loaded him onto their van and they sped off in search of the nearest hospital.

Nick Lachey- what's left of me

Watch my life,
Pass me by,
In the rear view mirror
Pictures frozen in time
Are becoming clearer
I don't wanna waste another day
Stuck in the shadow of my mistakes
Yeah...
[Chorus]
Cause I want you,
And I feel you,
Crawling underneath my skin
Like a hunger,
Like a burning,
To find a place I've never been
Now I'm broken,
And I'm faded,
I'm half the man I thought I would be:
But you can have what's left of me
I've been dying inside,
Little by little,
No where to go,
But going out of my mind
In endless circles,
Running from my self until,
You gave me a reason for standing still
[Chorus]
It's falling faster,
Barely breathing,
Give me something,
To believe in
Tell me: It's not all in my head
Take what's left
Of this man
Make me whole
Once again

wink

The moment the officers arrived they rallied round and assisted in transporting the seemingly liveless mr ojemba into the hospital. The white shirt they use in tightening the injury to prevent more blood loss was soaked red. He was quickly attended to by the nurses who actually though he was also a police officer. Then the doctor came along.

"Afternoon Officers. I was just made aware of a patient you brought a few minutes ago..." he used the papers in his hands to express the direction of the emergency unit.

"Yes that is true. I'l want you to make him stable because his wife would soon be here. Then we can go from there. My being prior to this occurence is just impromptu. Like a visit and lo, we met him sitting in a pool of his own blood, his head bent and resting on his chest. This is related to his kidnapped son"

The doctor adjusted the stethoscope on his neck and heaved deeply.

"Its alright officer..." he tried catching the name on his uniform badge.

"Sergeant Okoro!"

"Yes Sergeant! He is in a critical condition, but he might be out with a few hours. Can we discuss in my office?"

"Erm doctor, maybe another time. I and my boys are occupied. Thank Goodness we were chanced to save a life. It always make me feel happy. But i can spare just five minutes" he pierced his fingers together.

"Absolutely sir, come along" and the doctor led the way.

Their footsteps could be head hitting the tiled floor until it grew faint and a door closed behind them.Once again the hallway became silence.

-------------------------------------------------

As Mrs Ojemba approached home, she noticed a police van and a few officers lurking around. Some neighbours were talking with them using sympathetic gestures.

"What is going on here officers? I hope all is well?"

"Are you Mrs Ojemba? Please come with me." the constable led her inside and she grew frightened at discovering the door ajar. Was this a robbery or was her husband arrested with evidence? She became more confused as none of the neighbours came to inform her of what happened. They rather not be carriers of bad news, some felt.

The Constable suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned back cautiously.

"Madam, erm..... I just remembered! My boss would want to see you. That was his instruction. Please come along...." he used his hand to escort her out.

"Wait wait wait!" She raised her voice. "what nonsense is this? This is my home, and also about my husband, maybe my son. Why hide it from me and in my own house for that matter?"

"Ma, it would all be explained to you once you see my boss. Please follow us!" this time he looked sincere than earlier and she reluctanly enter the van and the van zoomed off..

--------------------------------------------------

As soon as the van parked at the hospital, several wicked, frightening thoughts flooded her mind. She was aware of what business partners were capable of to achieve devilish goals. Her son's current plight at the hands of kidnappers was enough to prove it.

She screamed and jumped, displaying anxiety. No one had said a word to her. It dawned on her as she conclude it was something bad. She now preferred her husband was in a police station rather than the hospital. She rushed to the nurses at the counter asking them for help. Restlessness replacing fear and nervousness interchangeably.

"Please madam take it easy. Please!"

"But wait Ogechi! You are....?" she quickly recognized an old friend of hers. " what is going on please? Just tell me. Oh Lord!" she turned away and face them again almost immediately.

"Ebere please calm down, i can assure you all is well. Its not serious as you think it is." Nurse Ogechi tried to handle the anxious look on her friend's face with sympathetic lines. " Sit down. Sit down. Here comes the doctor!"
