OLAplusONE: 1kg currently sell for 480 naira here in abeokuta. When you sell to retailers, try to sort out your fishes before they arrive. Don't ever allow them to sort for you |

I'm an undergraduate and planning to begin a small fish pond in my compound however this would be jointly done with a friend we have valued our pockets and we have only been able to come up with 50k,mind you I don't wanna start bis just something small and we can start from there..However it should be noted that water is not a problem the problem am having now are: -The roofing sheets and woods to make a cover for the fish pond:I dunno howmuch that would gulp but we have some used wood at home I just wanna make a cover for the pond to avoid sunlight as well as rainfall. -The type of pond-This is the main probs with our capital I thought of making Tapouline pond but I was told tapolin is quite expensive by the carpenter who wants to make the roof for us...He said the total of both is valued 30K if he should make it.However we are also going to pay the plumber,Buy fingerlings, and buy their food and drugs down in case of emergency wch is most important...I seriously need ur advise on the fish pond and necessary steps to take here are pictures of; I)-The water Tank wch is close to where the pond would be just a pick connection to the pond. |

spanzed: I like your zeal and quest to be an independent farmer. The 50k you have can not start the business talkless of feeding the fishes. However, do not relent in your desire to be financially independent, you can do fish retail for now. Buy grow out from farmers at retail price and sell to market owner at a good margin. While you are on this, you will gain considerable knowledge about fish farming, as you will visit different kind of farms. This will also allow you raise more capital 1 Like |

Re: Cat Fish Enthusiastic Farmers/lovers Come In Here And Lets Discuss. by Johnnyessence(m): 3:52pm On Feb 13, 2015 |
spanzed:juveniles is d first small seed of d catfish it ash in colour and at times brownish in their skin. juveniles is good for freshers in d fish farming Cos' it's less stressful. it cost around #25-#30 it very small u start 2mm feeds with them u can rear juveniles for 3-4 months till table size.but in fingerlings they are darkish in colour also they are ash but very deep in their mouth .they are small also like juveniles u can feed them for 5-6 months fingerlings is majorly helpful for fish farmer that has been rearing fish for so long it cost around #10-#15 per one depending on d hatcher that sell for you it's not advisable for fresher to start rearing fingerlings.Thks for ur patient happy farming. |

Please note to all those who have been sending PM's. This thread is not about the E-book I'm selling, its mainly for farmers and enthusiasts to share live/physical experience they have. I have always said despite the E-book been for sale, its not meant for everyone even though you have the cash to pay. If you don't pass my 'test' I can not sell to you. I had to post this on here for all those who did not know and have been abusing me unknowingly for refusing to sell the E-book to them. Thank you Now back to another story. I was on a farm yesterday and I felt so bad for the owner. The reason why was he once seek my professional advice and I gave him. Despite this, he still went ahead to do what paper farmers told him. Paper farmers are those without success on farm practice, they only know how farm thrive on paper. for anyone reading this...AVOID concrete and tarpaulin pond if you can. Not all location is suited for rearing catfish just like not all location is suited for planting palm tree or soyabean 1 Like 1 Share |

avoid concrete pond ke? There are lots of research on concrete and earthen pond and its just little diff. concrete pond has more survival rate than earthen pond, bt earthen pond produced more avg weight per fish. both of them are good if u manage the pond well. Both have their advt and disadvtages. did u hear wat flood did to earthen pond farmers years back? Do u do ur hatching inside earthen pond? i plan to dig earthen pond, but i will also have concrete pond in same location. |
Re: Cat Fish Enthusiastic Farmers/lovers Come In Here And Lets Discuss. by jam04(m): 3:47pm On Feb 20, 2015 |
mercylicious:Go and ask farmers will good yield on their cat fish, they are not using concrete ponds. If your pond is well sited, flood won't overrun it. I'm not saying catfish can't be raised in tank or concrete, I just advised those with options of the 2 to go for earthen. Also when scouting for locations to use for fish farm, site a location where you can dig an earthen pond. There are just so many advantages. |

As promised i will be talking about earthen pond today.Earthen ponds are arguably the best environment to raise cat fishes as they feel more at home in natural habitats. have you ever wondered by goats or cows are raised in the open field and not on concrete floors? or do they tell you goats cant survive if they live on concrete floors? they will survive just that optimum growing conditions will not be achieved. This also apply to car fishes. or why do you think animals in zoo are kept in an enviroment thats almost 90% replica of their natural habitat. now tell me how close a tarpaulin pond or concrete pond is to cat fish natural habitat. I know this write up is going to generate lot of criticism especially from internet and paper farmers and i will gladly ignore them. this write up is for those serious farmers who want to make real cash from raising cat fish. apart from the fact that habitat adaptation enhances optimal growth in animals, earthen ponds are easy and cheap to maintain. they are also cheaper to construct. another advantage is the space to swim around and exercise, the abilitu to dig in the mud( i guess most of you dont know catfishes out their mouth to the bottom of the pon like 30times every minute..huh? they so much love it. so guess how they will feel when they continuall jam their mouth against hard surface) and the stability of water quality( especially from a well channeled concrete pond) Another great advantage is better body shape, potential for better growth, better color yand better skin condition. have you ever wondered why the rate of diseases in concrete and plastic ponds are higher than earthen ponds? spawning is more efficient in earthen ponds than artificial ponds. unless you are raising cat fish for leisure or for pratice for onward progress to a larger scale, it is not advisable to raise cat fish in artificial ponds.the returns you will get will be lower to that of someone who raise his in an earthen pond under the same feed and water conditions. these are the basic points, more indepth discussion can be made later.

finally, i booked for 50 pieces of juveniles for my backyard testing. I will be going to collect them today. They didnt have coppens, so i paid for 1kg of durante for 1100 naira. They said it used to be 1000 naira before but added 100naira this february due to exchange rate. The juveniles cost N30 per one. I didnt buy from my friend dt hatch, cos we have some issues dt need to be settled, bt i bought from a popular feed seller/farmer. am using a 250 litres plastic tank cos of the few no and the size. i will transfer them to a 750litres tank after 2weeks. |
