I am an IT Consultant - specialism around Integration/testing making sure shi t works before it is rolled over to the production environment - being with the current client for almost a year now - I am getting bored as i have mastered everything that needs to be mastered. I am thinking should i ejected myself or stay with the current client collecting my daily rate.

Offers from other clients sound tempting - Anyway it is all about the dosh - if anybody says they want to develop " CAREER " na big lie. grin

Sup folks?

Life at the grindhouse has been hellish @ best.

We all know about the Ps in marketing situation (people, process, product, place, yadi yada)

In the Nigerian banking space, the product is the same across all the players, so distinguishing factor is clearly the people and the process.

Granted both are extremely important, so i ask if on pain of death you are forced to prioritize, which do you think deserves more focus?

So i dont set a bias, i'll reserve my answers till i get some feedback from the house.

Hope y'all be rolling in the paper.

Cheers

People. People make processes, not the over way round.
Re: Welcome To My Office by netotse(m): 8:20am On Sep 24, 2011
if we are to seperate processes(already made) from people, I'd pick processes any day, I'd rather people were cold-blooded and efficient than being all warm and fuzzy while being incompetent,

I appreciate the responses.

Y'all see the conundrum now?

Great process implemented by incompetent A-holes (to borrow @oybs line ) is tantamount to disaster.

That my friends is the problem of banking in Nigeria.

Soludos adventure created a manpower need that was filled with all sorts of charlatans.

Professionalism is one word that should not be used whilst describing the average Nigerian Banker.

Used to see myself as some sorta crusader but this force pass me and I shall leave this their industry the way i met it.

Sad tale i tell ya.

peace

@oyb (or anyone that can answer)

what's the difference between diesel, LFO and LPFO? I've always wondered, someone here told me they're the same thing but somehow I get the feeling they aren't.

we use LPFO(Low Pour Fuel Oil)(not sure whether it's the same as LFO sef) and HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil) for our engines and I'm trying to read up on them.
Re: Welcome To My Office by Nobody: 3:57pm On Oct 01, 2011
LPFO is not the same as Diesel, Diesel is known as AGO wich is the same as LFO, LPFO is the thick oil used as coolant in your heavy equipment like the boiler!

Studying abroad is a good means of developing one's self.
However, gone are the days of automatic employment.

If you have the money to study abroad, please do.
At least get a feel of what it is to attend a proper school with all the facilities.

These days, 'abroad' even includes Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana. You can get that feel if you attend school in any of those 'lesser' countries. Not in any university in Nigeria, public or private.
Our schools have become that bad.
Re: Welcome To My Office by oleam: 4:57pm On Oct 02, 2011
WOW.
So no more automatic jobs?
He spent his mothers & fathers last savings and sale of assets all for 13million naira to acquire the degree.
He had a first class too.

That's more than enough for him to get an entry position somewhere. Of course there's no such thing as an automatic job, but his chances are very good.
What did the person study?
Re: Welcome To My Office by oleam: 5:16pm On Oct 02, 2011
He studied Mechanical Engineering in Uk.
Does he have any hope?
Re: Welcome To My Office by AjanleKoko: 6:15pm On Oct 02, 2011
^^
Haba.
He should start applying for jobs na.
Or is he waiting for someone to come and call him from UK? He should hit the Career pages of all the MNCs in Nigeria. Oil and Gas, telecom, even banking.
Or Careers In Africa, they're a very good recruitment website.
He should know what to do now. Or how do they look for job in the UK?
Re: Welcome To My Office by oleam: 6:37pm On Oct 02, 2011
He is in lagos now o.
Spoke to him 2 days ago. He said he his going to serve. That no company job yet.

Well, i happen to have many yrs of HR experience.
Many graduates with foreign degrees can't pass their aptitude test and interviews.

In the past when aptitude test wasn't the in thing, you will get automatic employment if you qualify.
Nowadays, you slug it out with everyone else.

Do you know how many UI, UNIBEN, OAU graduates are geniuses?
You can't just ignore such people and give one mediocre the job who has a rich father to send him abroad.

Let your friend apply and if he is good enough, he will get a job.
BTW this is Naija, influential people still get people who are even less qualified jobs.

There is a difference between diesel and LPFO - the latter is a heavier (think longer chain hydrocarbons) than diesel. Diesel itself can be called a type of fuel oil due to it's properties (flash point, autoignition temperature, etc). It's usually those property differences that distinguish the products from each other Low Pour Fuel oil simply means a fuel oil with a low pour point - meaning it will continue to flow as a liquid and not solidify at fairly low temperatures. Some other fuel oils need to be heated in order to make them flow and then be used (bunker fuels in some ships for example).

If you want to know the differences, you probably need to check out the product specifications for their properties - flash point, pour point, etc.

Mechanical Engineering first class from the UK and he didn't get UK job offers? What school did he attend?

if he's already in Nigeria he better start making the applications to the various companies as suggested. . . .no time to waste.
Re: Welcome To My Office by netotse(m): 10:05am On Oct 11, 2011
Hey pple,

I'd appreciate it if someone gave me some tips on how to deal with information overload, There are a number of technologies(vibration analysis, ultrasound, infrared thermography et al) we apply to make our job easier and so I have to learn about them, thing is there's always some new material I discover on the internet and this keeps increasing the amount of stuff I have to read, It's even difficult to pick one technology and study and It doesn't help that in my department we're a mix of mechanical and electrical engineers so sometimes the line between fields gets blurred and all of a sudden you realise that you're doing mechanical work.

I realise I need to focus on something and see it through esp as training for electrical ppl here isn't anywhere as comprehensive as what the mech guys have(it's a group wide thing, it's not just in naija) and I sorta get sidetracked can see how I can apply all of them when I eventually head back to power (yep. . .power is still the main thing for me)

as per work. . .

things have picked up at work so there's precious lil time to faf around these days.

I'm away from the plant for a week for a training course yay!!! (I don dey plan to extend am sef), sad thing about it is that I'm at the training school

which is only 10mins away from the main plant, but still I get to close at 5.00 er'day  grin
