@Ajanlekoko
Dey enjoy the global Ish jare, u've paid your dues. We pray to get there very soon.

@Office,
SLS is beginning to cower oo. His cash-lite policy that was driving us nuts has received a sharp downward review.
Probably the Politicians have used his ill-timed donations saga to blackmail the guy into soft pedaling for them.
We knew ab initio that their Ghana must go cash movement was the target of the cash-lite thingy.

Errrm @Jarius, Abeg tell ur oga ooO. We don invest too much on this thing to go back now.
We need ROI.

Work at the Moment is very quiet but i am still billing every day. A friend of mine once said " Actually that one is being paid to fill that seat - just in case the work related issues arise ". The nature of my job sometimes is very similar to a fireman " Waiting for a house to catch fire" and all other times waiting

Generally busy these days, work-wise and personally.
This is shaping up to be a very challenging year. I need to make a major personal transition, and I need to lay the groundwork before the end of Q2.
Next year I intend to take some time off work to do an EMBA. I need a break from the work routine of almost one and a half decades post Msc. Any break is welcome.

In retrospect, I wonder how our parents were able to work for 30-35 unbroken years, without driving off 3MB into the lagoon at some point, out of frustration

Shit ain't gonna hold me back.
I gotta go all out to get mine,
A tech nine might come in handy for the next time I'm frustrated.
chumps are making me mad,
Can't seem to understand that I'm just that bad.

Let's just say Eko was not as hectic as this back then.
Moreso, work was a little bit without pressure and much less target driven businesses
But things have changed today.

I am kinda trying to mirror my career in the next fifteen years in the way i am ASSUMING yours has taken.
Let me take a guess. . .graduate from Uni, work for 2-3 years, go for M.Sc and then get back to work for a stretch of 15 yrs + or -
and then hit an MBA or EMBA whichever is applicable and the start the winding down years. Correct?

Ok, i have been more of an observer than a follower or poster but not as a result of not wanting to
but not having much to share. This thread came up when i was battling with study affairs but now that it's over,
i intend to join the talk show.

Ok, where do i start? Don't know but a little insight will do.
I will also love suggestions or another direction of thoughts

Started work just after NYSC in 2007 with a prominent Alumni union in Nigeria. . .was really fun interacting and working with/for them biggies
talk of the big guys in the various sectors and i do tell u i have had one form of interaction or the other with them. My job from NYSC has always been
between the media, journalism and communications. My job at that point was more of PR, event management and administration. It was fun and required lots of
creativity and thinking.

But then monotony starts to set in and the desire for more knowledge. Turns out work was going to be the same shitzo year in, year out.
But one has got to earn, live and grow. Also the need to have income meet with personal needs set in
I needed another job and fast. . . .series of test, interviews; a couple seem forthcoming but not to sure i wanna take them up

Turns out a prominent private uni advertises for an M.Sc in my preferred field,. I jumped at it.
Exams and admissions interview over, mid 2010 sees me resign and off to grad school for an M.sc in marketing comm .
I guess that's one exciting one year and i will always want to do a re. But till now, i am still asking me whether it was wise a
decision to resign. . .i guess it was but. . . . .

Yeah, that is roughly my trajectory.
After 15 years, if you've managed to break into senior or middle management, an EMBA is it.

Are you done with the MSc?
Marketing is always dynamic, always new things to do, new job opportunities, and the ad agencies are growing.
Are you back to employment now?

Recently, a lot of things have been running in my mind.

Government? Remain in this industry? Move to service industry, especially Financial service?

Sometimes, I see myself as fit for the public sector. I have long eyed CBN, DMO etc, but the interest is just waning, principally for pay disparities.

Financial service industry is another industry I look forward to, but with practically no relevant experience in the industry, and surely not ready for entry level positions, the window is appearing not wide opened.

Recently,I'm beginning to ask myself: you've been working for 4 years, you still don't appear decided as to what you want, isn't that a recipe for career failure?

So barring any further change of mind, I think I've decided to just be in this industry and be a professional Accountant/Economist with oil and gas bias. Even if I have to move from my current workplace, it has to be within the industry.

That was why I beamed my searchlight on opportunities within the sector in the last half of last year and I'm already at advanced selection stage(having crossed several stages of interview) with 2 companies within the industry.

The first is a downstream company like my current place of work, and our biggest competitor in that sector. If I move to the place, it will be like moving from Real Madrid to Barcelona. But the biggest obstacle may be the pay I'm asking for. From my inquiries with their staff, I doubt they can offer me what I currently earn here, not to talk of granting my higher pay demand, which is almost equal to what a manager earns there. But we are still in it sha.

The second is an independent player in the upstream, one of those medium-size E&P firms that rake in million dollars coolly without much noise, practically unknown except you're in the upstream industry. We are currently negotiating pay and my request is 4m on top of my current pay here. The negotiation is on.

So if any of these work out, I may be welcoming you guys to a new office in few weeks time, if not I remain oyb's messenger here! lol
Re: Welcome To My Office by Jarus(m): 3:57pm On Mar 28, 2012
One thing I've come to observe is that it's easier to move within an industry than across industries, and for some of us that start from high-worth industries, naturally, it places a limit on where you can move to.

Yea, late last year. It was really a fulfilling experience and i hope to make the best use of the knowledge
But really, that seems to be the reason for my confusion. I am trying to see how much i can develop myself with the emerging trend in digital marketing
I tend to see this as the next step of the marketing practice in Nigeria; it has fully matured in the western world but not so here.
The strength and dominance of the traditional media isn't helping matters and the fact that our people a just gradually turning up to the e-life seems to be
some sort of hindrance.

But i guess that with more innovation and developments in both software and communication devices, the maturity of the new media generation, it won't be too long
to see this aspect of marketing dominate. I don't even think if there are WSI consultants in Nigeria, the only guy i used to know seems to have lost the franchise as a result of non-performance but i think that with time, this sector will blow out. The cost effective nature is also very appealing compared to the cost of traditional marketing.

For now, i am just getting by with some PR and Advert design jobs i am doing. It doesn't pay as much as i expect; really pittance but hey, i love the exposure and glamour it offers atimes. So far, i have worked on a music TV brand, reality TV brand, currently working on a multi-national pharmaceuticals brand, a courier account and some new media account management. But here's is what's confusing me. Work for me or keep up the job search? I am scared shit on the issues associated with running a business in this country but it seems appealing. I also know i need some touching up experience-wise at least to be able to manage various situations. But also, i lost hope on working or will i say, i felt terrible after a prominent multi-national consulting firm MYSTERIOUSLY withdrew my offer on the day i was meant to resume. I lost morale and confidence for a moment. I even felt there wasn't any need throwing my papers about.

But then, it's all about the money and then being sure i am happy waking up every morning to set out for work. But i seem to be ok with being busy. At least it takes away the worries with thinking on which trajectory ones career should take. i just hope i get to sort this out before the middle of this year.

And hey, i love my cars, even when i don't make profit, i still seem happy doing them.

People have experiences sha.
How can a company withdraw an offer on the day someone was supposed to resume? They didn't offer any explanations? That's weird.
Anyway, keep at it. Digital marketing is set to explode in Nigeria starting this 2012. i have some business interests in that direction myself.

My apologies O. I'd gone to your profile page. Saw a link that I could use to send you a mail. I assumed you'd seen the mail.
I wanted to seek your opinion concerning a possible career shift, given the vast experience you have acquired on careers in the telecom industry. I'd seen some openings in Telecom (Specialist position at Etisalat; Analyst at MTN).

What would you say about leaving 4 yrs working experience in a bank to pursue those positions?

Regards.

If you are thinking telecoms is a more stable industry, it is relative. Telecoms does not necessarily offer job security compared to banking. Neither does it necessarily offer a much more rewarding career. In fact, I think banking is better unless you're a telecom engineer or some other type of telecom professional.

Not aware we have this and doubt it. Being a large, multi-subsidiary org, I can't claim I know everything about the group, but I'm not aware we have. Maybe our E&P subsidiary has.

But surely we have a Group Risk Unit, but just the regular risk management, not some specialized like ERP.

Well, 'got to work on an outdoor BTS at a remote site up here in the north. 'had to endure a back-breaking drive (no roads, just a bush track like one from National Geographic). 'turns out that the site's a nest for snakes. Even the locals avoid it at night. Well, at least I wasn't bitten. That would've sucked.

The latter just clicked yesterday and I have accepted it. My dream of crossing from downstream to upstream eventually materialized. Alhamdulilah

So from May 1, I will be welcoming you guys to a new office. Lol

I will be tendering my resignation in my current office this morning, effective end-April. I have already composed a powerful farewell message to my colleagues.

I couldn't get the 4m on top of my current pay as I asked from the new company but the negotiation yielded 2.5m addition. So I consider it a fair deal but upstream coys have more perks.

It's been a long journey especially when I remember missing Shell offer by whisker at the start of my career in 2008. It's a long walk to dream!
