During the period the money was said to be missing, no state or local government ever complained of not being remitted or given its allocation for the month throughout the year.

Assumptions. That's all you have said. No one is sure that any $20billion is missing and so, what are they trying to recover. Secondly, even if such is missing two different independent probes have been conducted and nothing of such was discovered why do you think it'll be different this time.

I think, it may lead to wild goose chase that will benefit no one. Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges that need immediate attention of the President that acting to unravel the mystery behind an unproven allegation. Politicians with evil intent will surely hijack probes of this nature to score cheap political points while distracting the government of the day from the urgent business of governance.

He is free to investigate if he want but my candid advice is to set up committee to review the submitted reports from the previous probes and determine the need for further investigations or refund or drop the issue in its entirety.

A lot of Niger-Deltan's and GEJ supporters make a huge mistake by assuming that a probe or search for any missing $20bn automatically means an attack against GEJ or Niger-Delta.

What these people fail to realise is that the oil cabal members responsible for these thefts are mainly from outside the Niger Delta and if these monies are recovered, the ND will still get the largest portion of the funds. Sometimes I just wonder how an entire region filled with educated and enlightened people can just be so myopic.

First of all, all proven cases of fraud usually started off as mere 'allegations.' That we are not sure if any funds are missing, but there was a weighty allegations by a high ranking public official, it only makes sense to investigate when you are not sure. If investigations were not done, maybe no one would have known of the $1.48bn which the audit report revealed. A responsible government would have simply investigated such a massive allegation without delay but it took several unnecessary public outcries before the call to investigate was obliged. Eventually, the results of the investigations and audit showed that the actual fraud was much smaller than what was originally alleged.

But now in retrospect, any smart person who studied the body language of the government in the handling of those allegations would know there was more to it than meets the eyes; there is certainly something fishy about the way the allegations and investigations were handled especially when you consider that the prime suspect (petroleum minister) in several of the allegations was still allowed to be the judge in her own case.

You say there are more important things the new government should be focusing on but have you imagined the sheer magnetude of that allegation?... Have you imagined how much the country would be saving if and if the allegation turns out to be even partially true?... I do not know about you but with all sincerity, I think it makes sense that these investigations are carried out by totally neutral bodies.
