tpia.: Ok. now I agree. If anything, I think they have been discipline enough to centralize their latrine area for one. lol. Not that I am praising the behaviour but they could have easily made the areas around their property free for all but they chose to have a latrine in a central location. Problem is the location is Situated on a river that serves all of their community and probably the whole state. |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:15am On Nov 28, 2009 |
well, they may have to move to dry ground. |
Re: Lagos Live by sjeezy8: 2:19am On Nov 28, 2009 |
why should the government set up anything for them? it is there personal life if they wan to shit and live there its their business. If it was any other country those houses would have been knocked down SINCE. |

Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:22am On Nov 28, 2009 |
sjeezy8: If you have a problem understanding QUESTIONS asked, you either a) Not respond at all and let those who know how to answer questions provide answers b) Or ask further questions to help you better understand what was asked in the first place No need to continue showing your ignorance every time you feel you can |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:24am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Beaf: what lame excuse? various solutions have been suggested: - move to another area - get them mobile toilets -get them health workers who speak their language -relocate their open toilet -educate them on health, sickness and hygiene. why not add more instead of just complaining. btw, someone can come to YOUR house, film you while you're on your toilet, and say the same thing about you- namely that you're living like an animal. and why would someone film people while they're pooping? Most of the issues you raised here should be handled mainly by educating the people on the importance of hygiene and going the extra mile to purify their water before using it. |
Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:28am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: The problems highlighted in the video are not in anyway knew, Neither are the solutions. They have been around in the same regions for decades now. |
Re: Lagos Live by sjeezy8: 2:28am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: what language? english? these people are not living in a remote village in the middle of nowhere |

Venice is build on water! |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:30am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Kobojunkie: Nigeria has a very poor maintenance culture. Something may have been done before, but faded away like morning dew, I'm sure. |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:30am On Nov 28, 2009 |
sjeezy8: the health worker said they dont speak english. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:32am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: Your suggestions will not work if they are not counselled psychologically. After thinking about it, I found that something is intrinsically wrong with anybody who doesn't develop butterflies in his or her stomach while eating a fish fed with their village poo. They are human scanvengers and it doesn't matter if you take them to the White House, that piggish behaviour will persist. |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:33am On Nov 28, 2009 |
back2back: true, but Venice is thousands of years old. This community is probably a fairly recent one, maybe not even up to a hundred years. I'm sure it probably got congested as a result of the population explosion in lagos. however, nothing wrong with learning from Venice. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:33am On Nov 28, 2009 |
back2back:Thank you very much. |
Re: Lagos Live by Beaf: 2:33am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: Those are shallow solutions at best. In any event, more than one of the residents was interviewed in English and responded in English. The only solution to the problem is a contructive govt presence. Currently, there is no sign of govt in their lives (they lack every basic human right, water, electricity, health services etc). They are a failure of govt (a very typical Nigerian issue). |
Re: Lagos Live by sjeezy8: 2:34am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: that health worker is a bloody liar, did we not see them speaking english? |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:36am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Aloy~Emeka: well, dont look a gift horse too closely in the mouth. its disgusting no doubt but poverty is terrible- cant argue with that. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:36am On Nov 28, 2009 |
sjeezy8: What will be her reason for lying about the need for a local to help in communication barriers? |
Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:36am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Makoko is NOT a remote village. Neither is Majidun or many other communities along the river side in the state. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:37am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Kobojunkie: They are remote in the sense that the basic amenities for human existence are scarcely there. One thing they have in abundance there is food albeit fed with poo. |
Re: Lagos Live by sjeezy8: 2:38am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Aloy~Emeka: communication ko just for shock value or sympathy. they spoke english fine to me |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:40am On Nov 28, 2009 |
sjeezy8: Who are they apart from the LG chairman and 3 others that can hardly communicate in pidgin?. Do you know the population of these villages?. If her assertion is incorrect, the journalist would have brought it up. What is your point? |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:40am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Beaf: In the village, sometimes when people dont have tap water, they use alum to purify their water from other sources- namely stream or rain water. People wash clothes and bathe in rivers. Dont know if they also do the other stuff there. There was a widespread campaign against guinea worm at one time- dont know what became of that. Did you not see a health worker and health center in the video? It was right there but it seems invisible to you. |
Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:40am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Aloy~Emeka: If that were the case, then many other communities not along the river would fall under the same list. This is not a remote area at all. Sure, basic amenities remain scarce but remoteness is most definitely no reason why that continues to be the case. |
Re: Lagos Live by Beaf: 2:42am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Kobojunkie: So why should excrement become strategic to their existense if not for a collective failure of govts (past and present)? Why should some of us here have seen the people themselves as the problem and not the Nigerian system? What we have witnessed in that video is a people so marginalised that they have regressed to the animal World. It is a disgrace and we should kick against it, not defend it. tpia: Guess why that would never happen. |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:42am On Nov 28, 2009 |
sjeezy8: she may have been referring to others, not the ones in the first part of the video. The health clinic was on dry ground while the other people interviewed were on water. |
Re: Lagos Live by Nobody: 2:43am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Beaf: stop calling them animals!!! sheesh!!!!! dont you poop abi whats with the snotty attitude. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:44am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Kobojunkie: Have you considered their access to other parts of the state? Bonny island is not bad but its isolated from the rest of Rivers state. If access to that village is only by water, then development will still be stunted. Bonny faired well because of oil exploration. |
Re: Lagos Live by Beaf: 2:46am On Nov 28, 2009 |
tpia.: And eat from it and wash dishes in it? Please no! I said they have regressed to the animal World (and will continue to say so), not that they are animals. |
Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:47am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Aloy~Emeka: This particular community is NO ISLAND. If you look real closely at the pictures, you will see the highrise buildings in the distance. Access to many of these communities is not just by water but also by land. Majidun is by the river and some of the houses on the river but access is by land on the most part. Same with river side communities in places like Ibeshe and even Makoko. |
Re: Lagos Live by AloyEmeka6: 2:49am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Beaf: Do you have constructive government presence in your own village?. Nigerians develop themselves with their resources and hoping on their government is a far cry. The max you can see is that local government chairman who tried to deny the reporters discoveries before her. Why should such a person offer any help?. May be he is the only educated person from that area and he is using that opportunity to enrich himself. |
Re: Lagos Live by Kobojunkie: 2:50am On Nov 28, 2009 |
Beaf: I am in no way condoning this at all and I definitely know this has to do with failure of government in dealing with this. And I applaud the lady for taking time to tell the story of these people. All I see her doing is bringing a true issue to the attention of the government, so as it deals with other issues, it can also deal with issues that DIRECTLY affect the people on a daily basis. More of this is NEEDED, if you ask me, rather than the mundane act of sitting back, waiting for the next time we can clap for the governors for doing what they were hired to do. |
