This is what should have done, sit close to him in class then start a conversation with him (I'm super shy too, maybe ask him for movies, it works lol). Then if you guys didn't talk up to the level of exchanging numbers, then you can do your WhatsApp method. But this time you introduce yourself (it's creepy talking to people you don't know), ask him about maybe something they taught you guys. You'd say you can't remember, stuff like that. U should have inboxed him on WhatsApp with your own number. A simple hi would have sufficed.
But what is done is done, u can only forge ahead.
Now I would suggest u actually meet him face to face and talk about it, if he is the understanding type he will understand your shyness and ur weird approach. If he doesn't, then expect to get a weird look from all the guys in school the next day, like a group of guys looking in ur corner n suddenly bursting into laughter. It's risk stuff sha, just be sure u want to take this risk
