I do "things", I'm not selfish or ungrateful. But luckily for me, I've been mostly with guys who aren't showy or extravagant. All of them didn't celebrate the things other people celebrate, like birthdays etc. It works just fine for me. I didn't feel it was phony just because we weren't showering each other with gifts. We still went out & did things that other couples do.
