The blast was an organized one by politician I really do not think this has anything to do with MEND.

Sorry I cannot do that. Charity starts at home. Why should I worry about other people who do not give a dammn about my people? What kind of sense does that make?

Tell me every Nigerian who is not from d ND doesn't care about d pipo there n i'll say u r d most ungrateful person on d surface of d earth, Mind u, d ND can't fight this alone. If MEND can't talk constructively 2 President Goodluck who is also from d ND, who then will they talk to.

Just like the police are holding the former deputy governor of Abia state over the kidnapping of school children
Please let us focus and put blames where they are due
You can ventilate your opposition to maradona using established facts

What facts have you established? Even if it's not maradona, som1 else can do it. Are u even saying dat kidnapping in Aba/Abia State is thought out, planned and executed by touts? U better wake up from ur slumber. Another tricky one for bros Jona again. If he goes all out for the MEND team, then expect some applause from the rest of the country, while the ND boils and amnesty programme  goes up in flames. If gets diplomatic , the he stands to be accused of insensitivity and poor control.

It's been said that among the casualties were innocent kids hawking pure water satchets.
God damn MEND and their indiscriminate killing of innocents. Civillians killed in Lagos by MEND in the Atlas Cove attack, now more innocents slaughtered by these people.
I only hope they have the power to raise the dead, if not how can they speak of justice when they have the blood of innocents on their hands?

This is the end of MEND's masquerade as a group of 'freedom fighters'. Now they're just terrorists.

Beaf:

The new head of JTF is a Niger Deltan (Maj. Gen. Omoregie - Edo state), so we can be rest assured that reckless murder and criminal ra'pe of the young and old won't be happening this time. Thank God the Odi, Gbaramatu and other similar massacres are not about to happen.

Innocent souls always pay in any struggle, but MEND would need to think up new ways of doing things, killing those that share the suffering (whether by accident or not), is not going to buy many friends; no matter how just MEND's struggle is.

Thanks for the clarification.

This whole situation is a mess.

I fear what happens in the coming months.

Nigeria independence celebrations marred by blasts

The BBC's Komla Dumor says people in Abuja have been shaken by the attacks

At least eight people have been killed in explosions in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, marring celebrations to mark 50 years since independence from the UK.

Police have confirmed that two blasts outside the justice ministry were caused by car bombs.

Earlier, the militant group Mend (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) had threatened to target the festivities.

Nigeria is a major oil producer, yet most of the population live in poverty.

The bombs went off not far from Eagle Square, where the Nigerian elite had gathered for the official celebrations, but no-one there was hurt.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who was inspecting a guard of honour at the time, called it a "wicked act of desperation by criminals and murderers".

Mend, a militant group in the oil-rich south, issued a threat on Friday morning saying it intended to bomb the event.

In the message, the group which is demanding a fairer distribution of the country's oil revenues, said there was "nothing worth celebrating after 50 years of failure".

The militant group Mend had earlier warned that it had planted several explosive devices. In the e-mail, the group addressed Nigeria's dignitaries saying the country had nothing to celebrate on its anniversary.

Mend is a loose coalition of violent groups from the oil-rich Niger Delta. Most of the group's leaders are observing a ceasefire.

Some senior Mend figures are already dissociating themselves from these blasts, but a small faction within the group is dissatisfied with the government's handling of an amnesty process in the Niger Delta.

It is this faction that is presumed to be behind the explosions.

If Mend militants are responsible for the blasts, it would be the first time that the group has targeted the capital.

At least one of the dead is a police officer.

A fireman at the scene told the BBC that 10 bodies had been found.

The BBC's Ahmed Idris in Abuja says he saw bloody footprints at the scene as emergency workers moved bodies into vehicles.

Our reporter says there may have been a smaller third explosion within the parade ground. Security staff said at the time a gun had gone off accidentally.

The two bombs went off about five minutes apart. Police said the bombs appeared timed to do most damage to those who responded to the first blast.

"There were more casualties at the second explosion because the first explosion drew crowds to the scene, which is close to the second explosion," an intelligence officer told AFP news agency.

"We heard a massive explosion not too far away from us," an eyewitness told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.
Map of Nigeria

"They said it was a bomb blast and all of us should move, Before we knew it, the second blast just happened. And you can imagine it levelled the people who were very close to that place."

Last year the Nigerian government signed an amnesty agreement with rebels in the Delta, offering cash and the promise of job training for former militants who disarmed.

Violence has lessened and the number of kidnappings has fallen since the deal was reached, but many fighters complain the government has failed to deliver its end of the agreement.

Oil production has increased since the amnesty came into effect - from about 1.6 million barrels per day to about two million now.

Most of Mend's attacks have targeted pipelines and supply terminals in the south.

President Jonathan is himself from the Delta region. When he took office earlier this year, a senior rebel leader told the BBC he would be the best person to solve the crisis in the Delta, as he understands its problems.

never thought i'd see myself agreeing wholeheartedly with something gej said

MEND = Wrong for this attack - If they truly did it.

Federal Government = Wrong for 50 years!

Wish Nigerians showed this much anger as our coffers were being looted. Then the country would have been a better place.
Re: Mend Strikes As Threatened, 7 Confirmed Dead by PapaBrowne(m): 6:28pm On Oct 01, 2010
For some odd reason I don't think MEND did this. While it might appear like the email came from MEND,I would rather give some time before concluding that MEND is responsible. Anybody can send and email and claim to be Jomo Gbomo from MEND.I would rather wait b4 concluding.

I also expect more acts of terrorism in the weeks to come siimilar to those of Aba and Abuja. Some folks are power drunk and would do anything possible to prevent a complete shift of power from the old guard. I see the hands of someone who is so desperate to become president in 2011. That same hand(IMHO) is responsible for the mayhem in Aba and is probably planning some more mayhem.

True, but MEND, knowing how it feels . . . . should not have taken their anger out on innocent civilians. They're worse.

I cannot say they are worse. They would have never have formed if it wasn't for the Nigerian government. They are a reaction to the neglect of the region.

Re: Mend Strikes As Threatened, 7 Confirmed Dead by Kobojunkie: 6:33pm On Oct 01, 2010
Yes, killing innocent civilians is no longer a terrorist act but a valid way of reacting to the neglect of a region which continues to receive so much more attention than any other region in the country at this time.  undecided

The same region has one of it's own as President . . . the very same region's TOUTS currently enjoys benefits that no other group of touts can boast of, all courtesy of the nation. The same region has a ministry dedicated to its affairs, yet it is somehow understandable that a terror attack should follow even after all that.

I think almost all of us here will agree that MEND is violent, however, we must know that they are no fools. An organisation like MEND must have their politburo, and maybe, just maybe after analysing the present state of things, they have found out that things remain the same for ND. GEJ have been presido for yearsmonths and from me to you, nothing has changed in ND. Now, I dont blame him for this totally because the system since independence is structured in a way to ensure that ND and Nigerians remain begging. And over time, these structures of injustice have been deepened. The only revolution Nigeria needs now is a wierd man as Presido

I am to a very large extent sure that the blast is just a political fight to cause some problems for Goodluck, Nigerian is developing by the day and we should be open to possibilities, we don't have to limit power to some certain tribes or people, if we fail to be rational in our thinking we would continue to make the same mistake we have made in the past. Who ever is fit to wear the crown should have it on.
The email is not a prove, the internet is not a secured as we think, your email address can be hacked and the perpetrator can send emails just to spoil your name or steal from some of your friends. it would be more reasonable to think that this was due to the coming election.
if you say it MEND well you could be right but in my honest opinion this is political.
