Naija folks have allowed yankee to brainwash them.

So while the Japanese develop space age technology to hunt whales in the open sea, Nigerians 'patiently' wait for some whale carcass to wash ashore.
In the mean time, what do they do as they wait

People perish for lack of knowledge. There are cattles, goats, pigs, sheep, entelopes, even rabbits to rear and make available for all,yet pple are looking for source of protein in a dead whale that could be diseased.
Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by kabukabu50(m): 12:47am On Nov 06, 2010
Nigeria is always going to be backward grin grin grin grin grin.

This is wrong on so many levels.

1)There is NO lifeguard/beach rescue in place at the beach to at least prevent people from touching the whale, before the authorities get there.

2)The beached whale could have easily flopped and broken some of the bystanders to pieces.

3)Nobody knows what killed the whale,it could have eaten something poisonous like all the toxic waste you have floating around in the Atlantic ocean

What if these people all of a sudden start to develop some crazy infection, and spread it all over the country

Reuben Abati  is an egghead. He's talking as if the west wouldn’t colonize it if it were 100KG of uncut African Diamond? What happened to Western respect for human rights when her -company Tranfigura chose an African country as a dumping ground for its toxic residue from oil. Where is western consciousness in every day gas flaring and oil pollution in Naija Delta? What did Abati  say when Spanish judge ordered that a 17th century shipwreck discovered by Odyssey Marine-USA  be returned to Spain as its rightful owner- because it contains over $500 million in gold. So putting things in perspective, $500 million in gold is huge to a westerner; while in the same vein, a whale washed ashore is worth more  to a hungry Lagosian. Kapish, ?

We keep complaining about development in our country when opportunities like this show up we do not take it.The point of Rueben's argument is that we have biologist, scientists etc in his country who should have seized thie opportunity for research purpose for crying out loud even the institute of oceanography is just a few blocks away from the site but all the science world in Nigeria acted as if nothing happened. Then they will go to the classroom and teach students using textbooks and pictures developed in other countries when we have thesame at home.

Quite scared how Naija brain works: so a dead/infected/rotten whale washes ashore in Nigeria, uninformed people jump on it for poison food, and here an "educated" Nigeria is blaming a Spanish judge somewhere in far away Europe for everything
Me, I no understand-o.

No body said whale meat is not meant to be eaten oh. The question here is if that whale has some toxic substance in it, what happens to those that consumed it? I hope all supporters here will come out and send them abroad for treatment o. Its even good you base your judgment on the fact that government doesnt have time for the poor to excuse the ignorance of those that eat the meat. so, you probably know too that when sickness comes government will not help them too.
Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by xandy84: 2:37am On Nov 06, 2010
poverty has made us lose our reasoning, you cant even be sure if the whale is dead or alive but some people want to make money at all expense even at there own life,,, just take care but i will rather die with hunger than eat that thing

A potential source of meat, systematic whaling was not possible in Iceland until the late 19th century due to the lack of ocean-going ships. Small whales were hunted close to the shore with the small rowboats used for fishing. Beached whales were also eaten and the Icelandic word for beached whale, hvalreki, is still used to mean a stroke of good luck.

When Iceland withdrew from the International Whaling Commission in 1992, commercial whaling stopped but some whale meat could still be found in specialised stores coming from small whales accidentally caught in nets or beached.

@na2day, its also a common occurence that whales run aground and sometimes have to be rescued especially the calves that r yet to master their routes. So until u can prove that the recent whale was dead and decomposing cos d reporter clearly avoided saying so, then u're being nothing more than a hypocrite for condemning and portraying people as desperate scavengers that would butcher even a decomposing and stinking animal out of greed. And for that here r 3 words ; Get a Life.

Does my eyes deceive me? sad  Infact ur post above is a proof dat many nigerian
youths are basically  walking about  with  brains atrophied by poverty? What exactly are u defending? That those  scavenger's action not spured by poverty? What ure tryin to tell us is, if u're driving by after closing from work  and u see a beached whale, u'd jump out and start hacking,  hoping to present  d meat to ur wife to prepare as ur dinner? Because, its free and u don't want to pay for meat. If ur answer to dat is yes, IT'S U  DAT NEED TO GET UR BRAIN EXAMINED
Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by tpia5: 3:36am On Nov 06, 2010
Japan has long butted heads with the International Whaling Commission, claiming that the body's strict antiwhaling regulations are an affront to whale-loving Japanese culture and taste buds. Last week, however, the country's Fisheries Agency proposed a compromise that the whale-eating lobby may be able to stomach: allow the meat of beached whales to be used for human consumption. The agency claims the policy change carcasses of whales that flop ashore must be incinerated or buried under current law is motivated primarily by a need to save money. In January 2002, for example, officials spent more than $500,000 to dispose of 14 stranded sperm whales, despite repeated requests to sell the meat.

Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by tpia5: 3:53am On Nov 06, 2010
^^and where is your evidence this particular alledged whale was decomposing?
Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by efoghorjos: 3:58am On Nov 06, 2010
Is anyone surprised? You shouldn't be because that's exactly the way our leaders want it. That is the reason our financial institutions have been plundered, our educational institutions reduced to mere caricature classrooms, and graduates are roaming the streets.

After over 50 years of oil exploration this is what we have to showcase to the world- poverty, institutional failures, armed robbery, ritual killings, political assassinations, certificate forgery, constant power failure, absence of potable water, lack of good roads, poorly equipped hospitals, etc.

If only our leaders would remember what is called SHAME and think of ways of bringing this country back on track. Our people are really hungry and impoverished. May God have mercy on us all.

This is one of the reasons our present generation should shove sentiments aside and think of enthroning purposeful leadership for this nation.

Re: Whale In Lagos(with Pics) by na2day(m): 4:08am On Nov 06, 2010
Nobody is against eating of whale, the issue is the Nigerian factor especially when things are free, not caring for their lives or wellbeing, if petrol is gushing out on the road, they will go and scoop, if whale is on d beach, no one will even ask whether meat is still good to eat, they'll descend like animals on it! POVERTY IS THE ISSUE NOT THE MEAT!

you go on with your petrol example and let me give you mine.

if you're going somewhere and happen to see a $100 note lying in the middle of the road, will you or will you not pick it up.

do you know where it's been?

rich countries dont eat roadkill and push their beached whales back into the sea or bury them. Nobody said nigeria is a rich country.

and in most non-western countries in the world, a beached whale would be seen as an opportunity to get much needed protein.

so what's with the unnecessary condemnation?
