Come to think of it, the Federal Government or Police have not come out to explain what happened. No official statement from either.Am afraid, this kind of incident would not be the last in we will see.
An official statement ought to have been issued to now and an official enquiry into the incident been put commission to ascertain some of the concerns here.

Enquiries on

* whether the Sargent went on the suicide mission on the instruction of s superior without the proper equipment

* Whether the bomb squad were adequately training to handle such mission and if not, the facilitator of the training brought to book

* Whether the police is equipped with modern bomb detonators

These and a lot more issues are things that should be looked into by the enquiry. But up till now,no word from official quarters.

the guys talking about him wearing protective gear and poo are funny. No amount of protective sh1t could have saved him. i guess he wanted to detonate the bomb and he couldnt have done that without opening the bag. I blame whoever sent him to do the job without educating him on how he could have detonated the bomb and save his own life.

That is ABSOLUTELY FALSE.

There are protective gears for bomd disposal experts. Look at some pics in the earlier pages of this tread. I am also aware that NPF has bomb disposal units which I want to believe are adequately equiped and educated on handling a case like this.

Some people suggested his swagger suggested he was part of the team, but I strongly disagree. I rather saw it as sheer recklessness on his part.

It is days like this that i really wish i was not born a Nigerian.I mean WTF? I know Nigerian police are silly but not that silly.

*Sigh* Honestly i give up on Nigeria,i have exhausted all hope that that country will ever function again. While i have no sympathy for this dumb cop,i do have sympathy for his family who have lost a loved one.

Stupidity aside ,the corrupt leadership of Nigeria is responsible for this mess.My prayer is that all the Evil politicians including this dumbo president of ours meet the same fate.I am seriously tired of what is going on.If i were to be in Jonathan's presence right now ,i will gladly put a bullet between his eyes.

Our leaders are a disgrace to us all. This video has gone viral on youtube and Nigerians are once again the laughing stock of the world.I hang my head in shame because apart from our food and music there is nothing to be proud in naija.

Now let us look at how this fatal blunder could have been averted.

1 : Once the suspicious sack was discovered ,they should have codoned the area off.
2 : Due to what is known about IEDs everyone (civilians) within that area should have temporarily arrested and their
   cellphones checked by forensic analysts.
3 : A signal jamming device should have been activated to jam cellphone, radio and remote control signals for over 1km
4 : All security personal should have been ordered to stand as far away as possible and carry armor plated shields which
will protect them from shrapnel should the bomb go off
5 : Bomb specialists should have been dispatched to remote control a bomb detection/disarming robot toinvestigate the bag.

If all the above had been done ,the death of that officer would have been averted.Worst case scenario the bomb detection robot would have been the only casualty.Secondly chances are that the culprit could have been found if the forensic analysts were able to link the cellphone, radios or remote control confisticated from any of the civilians that were temporarily arrested to the signal receiver found on the bomb.

Boko haram remains a serious threat but only because our silly president jonathan does not see it fit to fully equip the bomb squad in Nigeria ,an area that has been constantly plagued by violence and bomb blasts.Nigeria is not a nation but a jungle which has a government albeit a corrupt and heartless one.

Nigeria is like a kindergarten, children,s playground in their formative years. How on earth could a police officer who should know better the dangers of explosive approach a suspected bomb package without any health and safety procedure in place? Not even spilled human blood will a rational person approach like that without protection, talkless of a bomb. His family should sue the nigerian police and nigerian government for millions. He was sent on a suicide mission.

the poeple who captured it fully on camera knew the bag had contents, why wld they just randomly decide to video a policeman on duty?
i s he the only or the first police on duty for him to have a live coverage on him on duty, these people just dont get it,
their worst enemies live around them, and to think that poeple around did nothing but just stood the whole time is damn frightening,
lives are being lost and it seems like an action film to some, smh!

An area where there is a suspected bomb package there should be a clearance radius of at least 200 by 200 metres but nigerian bomb squad doesnt know that, sad. I have always wondered what a nigerian bomb squad is capable of,how suicidal it will be to be in that squad.

This poor policeman gave his life so that public can continue about their business in safety and all you useless people can do, is criticise his brave action.

Do you think if a robot or a bomb suit had been available he would have refused to use it?
Even a bomb suit would not have protect against such a powerful bomb at close quarters.

So to those criticising him and the police, would you rather he did nothing and allowed more public lives to be endangered?

May you R.I.P. Sir.

Good points @ the highlighted.

I am sorry for people yarning nonsense (talking theory) on this thread without reference to the sorry state of leadership in Nigeria as a whole.

Adieu, my gallant policeman.

Did you see any iota of organised method to his attempt at a suspect package or did you see display of casual stupidity?
Within his ability and equipment available to him, yes.

1. He ensured people where far from the object, because object was found in a built up area with a lot of human activities.
2. He went alone for reconnassance of the suspect object.
3. Using the available equipment to him, which is the hand held metal detector, he frisked the bag to confirm whether it contained metal.
4. He noticed that the mouth of  bag was tied, and so on------.

My brother, IED/Bombs is a big topic which can not be exhausted here on the forum. However, if you want to know more goggle the words. You will learn about types of bombs/IEDS, reconnaisance of suspected IED/BOMB object; Methods of disposal which includes manual, mechanical and by use of explosive, and under these, a lot more sub-methods are available. Please, let me stop here.

Professional hazard does not respect expertise or whatever, when it wants to happen. It was just unfortunate that he died, and if I may ask, how else should a  bomb disposal expert die?

May his soul rest in peace.

What he did was totally unnecessary and dumb, yes somebody had to do it. Also, somebody have to fix electric power lines as well, but you don't see anybody messing around with live wires with their bare hands.
He violated the first law of nature, even when he didn't have to; like jumping in a river to save a drowning person or running into a burning building to save a little old lady.
Nobody was in any imminent danger at that point until he decided he could somehow survive an exploding bomb. Verdict; Dumb.

You are absolutely lying to yourself.

What can be reasonably deduced from the video clip was:

1. The security officers ensured people where far from the object. Stop giving him dubious credit.
2. He went casually, irresponsibly and foolhardily to a dangerous device to not carry out reconnaissance but to (mostly) casually attempt to stop it amidst euphoric cheers from illiterates around him.
3. You don't know what was available to him. Someone pointed to possibly more equipped people approaching at 1.38m. Lets even imagine nothing was available to him, people have suggested shooting the bag. Even just show some little sense of danger awareness by taking a metal shield would have made me give him more respect.
4. If he did not move close, there was no danger or threat to life. He could have waited for a good plan to be deduced.

There is nothing heroic about his actions, he was casually stewpid and you should be OUTRAGED that that is the quality of the brain power of individuals your government is giving guns to go around the country.

It's very disheartening reading what most of you are saying. If life no longer means anything in Nigeria, then we have a problem, in fact we are doomed!
Imagine how the family and relatives of this Officer will feel reading all these trash. The gory video is enough trauma for them, why add to it with all these thoughtless comments

No body in his right senses would like to die like this, the brave Officer thought he could do it hence going for it,, he wanted to save the lives of innocent people and paid dearly with his own life; if he had succeeded, he would have been a "Hero" and then there would be praise-singing.

RIP Officer, you are a brave man in a wrong Country!
May God give your family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Onuma ejum n'obi!

There was NOTHING brave in what he did please. The man acted unwisely and got blown up as a result. He did not have the right equipment and so should not have been that close to the bag to begin with.

Sgt Badang is a member of the special police anti-bomb unit and with the confidence he exhibited it is obvious he has been detonating bombs before this unfortunate incident. Nigerian Police are the only ones in the world that diffuse IED's with their bare hands(the most dangerous act on earth) despite their inadequacies but, they still do it just to protect their fellow countrymen and women. For all the fooolish peeps out here, you will notice pics of policemen detonating bombs with just hand gloves in Kano after boko haram kano attacks(NPF diffused more than 1000 bombs in kano alone without any special kit).
That bomb was detonated by someone watching from the crowd with either a Gsm phone or a bomb detonating device.

I do not have regards for the Nigerian police before, but with the actions of this eternal hero, I will forever be proud of the Nigerian Police. No matter their deficiencies they still keep the country protected. Why are Nairalanders so evil, so wicked, so heartlessly foolish. He died for others to live and paid the supreme sacrifice.

1. You used "he", which was a dubious attempt to over-credit him to back a weak point. That is as dubious as saying Efan Ekoku is the hero that won Nigerian the 1994 ANC.
2. Approach it cautiously, with fear, otherwise do not approach it at all. You don't think it is senseless to approach a suspected bomb casually like if you are made of steel?
3. We don't know what happened but if he was detailed, he should refuse without the right gear (although I know Nigeria is different). He can refuse based on no gear or not being qualified. If he was qualified, I am sure he would not approach the package like that because anyone qualified knows bombs can be detonated remotely and will not think it is safe to approach for reconnaissance. Why can't you just shoot at a bag? How will shooting at a bag "inside a town" turn the country to a place "like a war zone"?
4. You don't get it. The situation was under control until he went there. The package was identified. The place was evacuated. Everything was safe until he went there. It was not a danger to anyone, so no need to rush like a fooool to go and check it without the right equipment or at least some precaution. That was not heroic, that was foolish.

He foolishly and casually went about his call of duty. There is nothing heroic about him.

The place had been cleared. The immediate danger of injury to anyone was minimised virtually to zero. Evident in the fact he was the only one injured when the thing exploded.

Just a little bit of brain work and planning and maybe he would be here alive without one hand and his two legs (but is not dead).

SERGENT SUNDAY BADANG
YOU DIED FOR NIGERIA !
YOU DIED FOR PEACE!
YOU DIED FOR HUMANITY!
YOUR DEATH IS A VICTORY OVER bokoharam!
WE (TRUE NIGERIANS) WILL ALWAYS LOVE, REMEMBER AND PRAY FOR YOU!

The Nigerian government must immortalise this man and take care of his entire family, as for me for the rest of my life i will personally watch out for any "Badang" and do to them any good favour I can ever afford with the hope that he or she is related to this great man SERGENT SUNDAY BADANG.

Almighty God,In Your Infinite Love and Goodness receive SERGENT SUNDAY BADANG in your bosom and grant him eternal heritage in your kingdom in The Mighty Name Of Jesus, AMEN!.[/b]

The guy died as a result of his own incompetence. Plain and simple.

What exactly was he going towards the bag for when people were busy clearing out, assuming that is what is happening in the Video? Who exactly sent him to go open the bag? Why? What was that message like "Death is in the Bag. Go open it" ? Really?

He did not die for Nigeria. Please do not now rubbish the lives of many who have actually died trying to do something meaningful for the country. This man was inquisitive and his curiosity led to his death. Let us now not encourage people to do such ever. A Bomb will kill you PERIOD.

It is really silly of you to try to pretend God is taking your side in this. Stop playing with God as if he is some puppet for you to pull to your side whenever convenient.

Use your head. Everyone knows, especially in the new reality we live with globally that bombs kill. The man knew this but chose to open the bag. . . . what did you and others expect to happen? For confetti to rush out or something? Cut the bull and stop acting brainless in this. What he did is as silly as going to running to stand in front of a coming truck. There is nothing brave about that and certainly not a death for any nation that I know of, even Nigeria.

jamace:

1. I used "he" because he was part of the security forces.
2. How casual is casual?
3. How can he refuse order from his superior for not having the right gear when the gear is not available in the inventory of the NPF? (It seems you are completely oblivious of the state of equipment in our security forces). If you have not done reconnaissance, how do you determine what it is and how to go about defusing or disposing it? {?}.grin grin I can't just imagine how many bags will be shot at in a day. LWKMD.
 4. shocked shocked  Your comment shocked me. Why are you talking of equipment that does not exist in NPF inventory?

Bros, you dey naija at all?  oh! sorry o, the bobo dey LONDON. No wonderrrrr!!! shocked shocked

1. That is why it was dubious. Efan Ekoku was also part of the team but I will not call him a hero and defend the assertion by saying he was the one that won us ANC except I was trying to be sneaky and defend a weak point.
2. If I saw him even wear a motor-bike helmet and holding a metal shield, I would say he was at least behaving like someone aware of the risk even if it would not save him.
3. I am yet to be convinced no bomb apparel exists in the NPF. You are making an uninformed assumption as far as I am concerned. Reconnaissance is going to have an observation, not going to open a bomb package. In the UK, if you are not sure what is in it and there is no safe way to find out, they BLOW it up. Why couldn't they blow it up or even shoot it? It will be better to shoot 100 bags a day than have your leg blown 100 metres away. I lie?
4. As I said, not yet convinced. Assumption!
