This story leaves you captured in the world of Simi- a struggling Nigerian undergraduate who has been through it all. Locked up in the four walls of betrayal, witnessed the prisons of sour romances and permanently licking the wounds from a broken heart, Simi is determined to come out of her misery. With an absentee dad, a mentally unstable mother, and untrustworthy friends, she embarks on the lone journey to find true love. What happens on this journey? How does she deal with the bumps and uncertainness of this road called life? Simi shares this with you in this tale called Jagged Edge.

September 20th 2006.
The brown pumps she had picked from the open market the day before lay askew on the thread-bare rug in her room. She had made the decision to buy them as she thought they suited her style better than all the other footwear she had seen on display at the market and she hoped she hadn't been wrong as second thoughts crept through her mind. She had very constrained options anyway so who was she to be fussy about style? Style, they say, is for the rich and mighty and she was nowhere close to that, not even in her wildest dreams.

She had a part-time job that fetched her a meager sum of ₦6,350 monthly. Cooking in Aunty Bisi’s kitchen wasn’t exactly the most pleasant experience she’d ever had but she had to do it to make ends meet. With little support from her family, there was no way she’d ever pay her fees and feed without the extra money. She knew how hard she had pleaded with Aunty Bisi for a ₦1,000 increment in her salary the month before to help with transportation to and from the restaurant, but she had only been obliged an additional ₦800, bringing the salary to the current amount. “Not too bad”, she voiced. “If this is what I get for chasing pungent clouds of smoke, swatting thick, big houseflies that emanate from the restaurant and dealing with randy customers that could pass for ogres, then the pay is satisfactory”, she mused.

She had picked up her latest pair of shoes to try them on yet again, when she noticed an ugly patch on the right shoe. Life had taught her at a very early age, to be observant and cautious in everything she did so it came as a surprise to her that she hadn’t seen the neatly stitched tear on the left side of the footwear at the time of purchase. Perhaps she had been overwhelmed by the sleekness and cheapness of it that her avid sense of sight had failed her. Getting such a beautiful piece of fashion for the price she had bought them could be considered a steal. No one could outbargain her anyway, she thought, as a sultry smile spread across her dimpled cheeks. Not with her convincing tongue and charming smile that even Obi, the shoe dealer wasn’t immune to.

She ran gracious, long fingers through her thin, browning hair in anxiety because she knew there was no way Obi the shoe dealer would agree to the return of the shoes he had sold so cheaply to her. Oh well, she’d just wear them that way for her matriculation ceremony. She knew nobody in her new school and had no intentions of pleasing anyone with her looks either. She took a quick glance at her watch and found it was 6:30 pm. "I better grab some dinner before the cafeteria closes for the day" she said, her bed giving a loud noise as she lifted her self from it, and marched out of her room in search of her last meal of the day.

Excited about her new school and her matric that would hold that day, Simi woke up very early the next morning and stared into the utter darkness that filled her entire room.
It was a small room that could only boast of being bigger than a peephole, with poorly painted, glossy green walls and low asbestos ceilings that were decorated with brown water stains. The room had one small window that was clad in dust and only two pieces of furniture – a brown desk with a chipped surface that was heavily stained with red ink and her bunk bed.

She had slept with the lights on only to wake up and realize that they-PHCN- had done it again. She reached for her pocket torch and found it beside her bunk bed where she had left it the preceding night. Flicking the torch on with a swift move of her thumb on the slide switch, a bright orange-yellow light engulfed the darkness that had existed just moments before. She put her hands to her forehead to clean off the little beads of sweats that were forming. Her skin was clammy and an unshapely map from perspiration was visible across the middle of her sheets. Simi had gone to bed so early the previous night, after the matron of her hostel informed her that her roommate would be arriving the next day-today! That was something for which she was not yet mentally prepared; dealing with the troubles of other people was not her strongest point and from the tales she had heard from young adults who visited the restaurant, roommates were some of the most inconsiderate works of nature one would ever come across; but she would try to mind her business to prevent them from stepping on each other’s toes. She was not going to get in trouble because of a stranger as she had had enough already, to last her a life time and over.
She snatched her bucket from under her bed as she made a mental note to get padlocks for her locker later in the day.

Grabbing her towel from the door where it hung, she headed for the bathroom. The only surviving bathroom of Amina hostel had caved in two weeks before and was currently under construction so everyone had to bathe outside the building. The thought of it gave her goose bumps. It frightened her that someone could be lurking in the yard watching her have her bath and she could not tolerate imaginations of someone looking or probably lusting after her naked body. Though she did not have an exquisite bathroom to herself at home, she at least had a roof over her head with a wooden door that shielded her from the view of others.

It was getting bright and she hastened up. She took a quick scan of her environs while she poured the last bowl of water on her body. Her hostel was located North-East from the main gate of her school. It had been built in the late 60’s, she had been told, by some Portuguese architects in alliance with the best Nigerian engineers that were available at the time. Though maintenance was lacking, the walls still looked sturdy and she had discovered not even a single crack on any of them so far.
It was a brown bungalow with a total of thirty-five rooms that would be home to 70 students. She was glad she had gotten a slot here because all of the other hostels, though bigger, had not less than 12 students sharing a room. The flowers constituting the flower bed where her towel rested had all withered and had browned from dehydration even though it was the month of September. The part of Nigeria where her school was located saw intense sunshine for at least 10 hours a day, every day that was beginning to take a toll on the plants. “I better run off before someone sees me here stark naked” she thought.
Pouring the last bit of water that was left in her bucket on her legs; she wrapped her towel around her luscious chests and took a slow stroll to her room, consciously trying to control the squeaky sound emanating from her wet slippers.

No sooner had she gotten into her room than she heard a loud knock on her door that startled her. Jesus! Who could that be? Her heart raced. She could not recall meeting anybody nor could she remember inviting anyone to her humble abode. She shouted from the other end of her room “Hold on, I would be right there”. Hastily, she stepped into her squeaky clean slippers and lunged for the door midway through wearing them. Unlocking the deadbolt-the only form of security the door had- , she poked her head outside such that the rest of her body remained hidden behind the door and only her head was visible to this mystery visitor.

“Hi, how may I help you?” she said to the dark-skinned girl standing only a breath from her. “Hey, I’m Cindy your new roommate. I assume this is room B33? It had no sign on the door and… “Oh yes, this is B33” Simi cut in. “You can come in” Simi said, trying to give her a hand with her luggage but her roommate refused so she let go. There was an awkward silence in the room as Simi looked at her from behind sizing her up. She does not look too bad albeit a little aloof. Tall, beautiful and voluptuous she was but to Simi, those were only signs that she might be a handful. She could be wrong though, she thought. Having been taught by her mother never to judge a book by its cover, she did not want to get ahead of herself on this one. She had a love for estimating the capabilities of people at first glance and couldn't help doing so with Cindy. She had not anticipated that Cindy would arrive so early in the morning and was a tad irked by that.

“I guess I’d be using the top bunk?” Cindy asked Simi coldly, inclining her head a small angle to face her. Lost in thoughts about her new roommate, she was taken off guard by the question and answered seconds late. “Err.. uhm.. yes, the top bed is yours while the bottom one is mine.” She stuttered. Did she really have to bother me with that unnecessary question? Her bed had been made so she expected that Cindy would know that the unmade one was hers. I guess she was just making sure, no harm in that.

“ Uhmm Cindy, I was about getting dressed when I answered the door. I hope you don’t mind me dressing in your presence? I would excuse myself if you wish” she said as she reached under the pillow on her bed where she had hurriedly tucked in her underwear when she heard the knock on the door. “Oh no it’s totally fine. I don’t mind. I could even shut my eyes for you sake”, Cindy joked and they both smiled. While Cindy set her boxes to the floor to empty them of their content, Simi splattered lotion on her body as she wondered more about this new roommate she had. She would get to know in the nearest future so there was no need to occupy her mind with that, the only thing that was worthy of her mind’s space was her matriculation ceremony that was to begin in 5 hours.

Lots of punctuation marks are missing in your write up.
You should use them to make it easier to read.

The pillars and ceiling of Moremi Hall Lecture Theatre- MHLT- where the ceremony was to take place had been lavishly adorned with green and yellow balloons, and decorating strings that were made into bows. The marble floors had been scrupulously cleaned so that it glistened under the tungsten light, which recently replaced, incandescent bulbs emitted. The chosen color theme of the occasion- army green and golden yellow- would align with the colors of the matriculation gowns so that there was no mismatch. Other than the yearly convocation ceremony that was organized in honor of final year students, this was the most-talked-about occasion in Sheik Salif University. On this day, students would give the rest of the world some insight into the amount of wealth their families had amassed.

The affluent would bring their children to school in flashy cars and display their opulence ever so brazenly. There would be loud and boisterous cheers from proud parents whose wards were able to obtain a spot in the only university in town, and the wards themselves would swank off in their newly purchased outfits, in a bid to socialize with the other students they would share classrooms and bed space with for the next four years.
The poor and intimidated, usually, would sit at the rear end of MHLT. They were the quiet lot that only talked when questions were specifically directed at them, as they never wanted any attention drawn to them. One could easily identify them by their sunken cheeks, chapped lips, and bulging eye balls. Most of them had ashy skins that depicted lack of moisture as well as hard and unfavorable conditions. They would wear clothes that spoke volumes about wretchedness, and shoes that were the perfect candidate for the nearest recycling machine.

Simi fell into the latter category. She entered very quietly into the hall and sat on the very end of the last row in the room. She had worn the gown she purchased right after her high school graduation and thankfully, it still fit perfectly. It was a highly-patterned coffee- brown dress that hugged her lanky frame and exposed her long, lean legs. If she had been able to afford a new dress, she wouldn’t have given this one a second glance since it was beginning to fade from over wearing. She had been waiting outside for Bayo- her family friend that had promised to be in attendance but he hadn’t shown up so she would have to be alone for the whole ceremony. She sighed as she brought out her mobile phone from her black purse to ring Dayo when she heard the all too familiar computerized voice that told her, her account balance was low. She stifled a cry and threw the phone back into the purse in anger.

She adjusted her position so she could have a better view of the guest speaker that had been invited to speak. He seemed to be talking for hours on end and she was getting impatient and willed that the event be over. Had she come with her roommate to the event, she wouldn’t be this lonely. She had begged Cindy to accompany her but she seemed uninterested and adamant. Cindy had been putting on makeup when she informed her she was going to meet up with a friend in town. “I am not down for this matric thing at all, I know it is going to be boring and boredom is the last thing I ache for right now”, she had said, waving off any forthcoming pleas from Simi. She turned to look at the guest speaker again. “…. Aren’t you all fortunate to be in an institution such as this, Sheik Salif…” the guest speaker gabbled on and on. Okay, she’d had it. She had to work at 5 and no way in hell was she going to sit and listen to this speech even for a single second more. She’d rather use the extra time to do something more productive like looking around her new school!

She raised herself from the auto-recline chair where she had sat and sauntered to the door. She was about pushing the door open when she felt of cold gush of an unknown liquid on her face. Could this be any worse? She imagined. Everything from her chest down was drenched in this black liquid, even her bag and new shoes were not left out. She stared blankly at the person who had brought this embarrassing situation upon her as she knew not what to say to him.

“Oh my God, look what I’ve done. I am so sorry miss, I didn’t mean to. The cup slipped out of my hand before I could catch it and look what a huge mess I made. What have I..”, the culprit frantically apologized with every word of remorse that he could think of. “It’s okay. No problems. Do you at least have something I could clean myself with?” She retorted as they walked away from the doorway. He offered her his handkerchief but she declined, saying her room was not far away so she might as well just head there and get changed. “Please accept my apologies miss.” He said as she walked away. She nodded in response, fighting back the tears that had welled up in her throat. With every bit of dignity she had left, she sprinted out of the building, towards her hostel and wished the earth would open up and suck her in. Dayo had not showed up, Cindy had refused to accompany her and now this! What a Matric day.

]“Simi! Siiiiiimmmmmmmmmmmi!!! Where are you now? Bring the fish and onions. The water is boiling already and customers are waiting. Siiiimi! God why do you always send slow people to me eh? Allah kiaye! Siiimmi!” Aunty Bisi was furious! Simi had come to the restaurant late and that had slowed things down. She was a very astute business woman and believed strongly that punctuality was the soul of business. She had maintained a very anti-lax culture over the years and would not give way to any form of laxity at this point. Had it not been that she knew Simi’s mum before that unfortunate incidence, she wouldn’t have employed her. Her mother used to be a very good friend and customer and she felt it was the most dutiful thing she could do for her, to employ her only daughter who so needed all the help she could come across.

Simi arrived with the fish and onions, looking disoriented. “Simi, let this be the last warning I would give you. Lateness of any form would not be tolerated by me okay? My customers are my priority and they are not to be joked with. One more issue with promptness and you would see the other side of me”, Aunty Bisi addressed Simi sternly. “Yes ma, it shall never repeat itself. It was because.. “Ehn ehn, eeeeen.” , Bisi cut in. “ Let me hear word. Save the excuses for when you would need them and get back to work this minute”. Simi scampered off like one who was being pursued and went back to the goat meat she had been cutting. God! When would this misery be over? Can this woman have even just the most rudimentary understanding of what I have to go through? She queried as she wiped off tears that were streaming down her face.

Aunty Bisi motioned to her again to bring the meat outside so they could cook it. By 8 pm they would start serving nkwobi and time was rolling by fast, like no man’s business. “Okay ma, just give me one second and I’ll be all done.”
She lifted the bowl of meat from the floor and balanced it on her hips and she sashayed to meet Bisi. It was then she saw him, the handsome guy from the ceremony that had drenched her in Coca-Cola. She stopped dead in her tracks and stared wide-eyed at him and he returned her gaze. He couldn’t see her that way, no! He was not to know that she worked as a kitchen girl. Not after the rude attitude she had put up earlier that afternoon. That would be humiliating and she was not ready for that. She made a half turn to walk back to the kitchen and hide but that was out of the option as aunty Bisi was waiting for her outside. Simi squared her shoulders and walked out of the restaurant towards aunty Bisi and said a quick hi to him, his hands brushing against hers for a fleeting moment. He went on to find himself a seat.

It was no surprise that he, along with two of his female friends, and come to have dinner at Aunty Bisi’s. It was a restaurant that had been reputed the best in town by people who visited. It had been ten and a half years since inception and Aunty Bisi’s restaurant was still going and growing strong. The northern Nigerian town where they lived held cultural values high and that included cultural food. The locals would not let civilization deny them of the morals their forefathers passed on to them, as such, their ethnicity was an integral part of their daily lives. Aunty Bisi had stolen the heart of people when she had started serving local dishes at her restaurant. She was ethnically of Yoruba descent but that did not hinder her. “Simi get their table now! Do you have to be told that one again?” Bisi looked at her quizzically as she threw the question to her face. “No ma, I thought Ahmed would take their table that was why I hesitated.” She ran off before Bisi could speak another word. She had developed a thick skin to her bashes but today was different. Her emotional wall of protection had become rubble and her guard was down. She knew Ahmed was not going to take their order because he had been attending to another table, but she had to give that lazy excuse to save face.

She gazed at the ground, eyes darting left to right as she approached their table. When she finally overcame her shame, she raised her head and asked them what they wanted. The two girls looked at each other and nodded in unison as they told her they would eat rice and fish stew. She made a mental note of what they had said and managed a small smile. She turned to him and asked him the same. “ Simi..” He had overheard Bisi addressing her by that name! “I would not pretend that I do not remember you from earlier this afternoon. I have not been able to get over the incidence and I would like to apologize again. Usually, I am not as sloppy but..” He sighed. “Anyway, I just want to apologize again and I hope you forgive me”. She let her signature smile warm up her face as she told him that it was alright. She didn’t want to get deep in a conversation with him as the fear of Bisi was the beginning of wisdom. “What would you like to eat please?” She inquired. “Uhmm, I would just wait for the nkwobi. Upon my arrival, I saw you taking to meat to her..” he pointed in Bisi’s direction and made a funny face “.. So I know it isn’t ready yet.” “It would be ready in a short while, please bear with us”. She tried to sound professional but her voice was giving her away. God! Was he handsome!! His hazel eyes had pierced deep into hers as rendered his unsmooth apology. Could one of the two girls possibly be his girlfriend or maybe concubine?

She pinched herself as she wondered what had come over her. “Simi, concentrate and use your head” she told herself. She opened the cooler that contained hot steamy rice and reached for 2 plates from the rack to dish the rice in.

The girls were halfway through their plates when the nkwobi was finally ready, but this time Simi was not to serve them. Aunty Bisi wanted to do the serving herself so she could apologize for the late arrival of the meal. The young man had waited an extra 15 minutes and Bisi thought it’d be best if she rendered all exculpation herself. She took the meal to their table wearing a rather unusual smile on her face. Bisi was not known for smiley faces, in fact if anything, she was known for her eyebrows that were always creased and her long face like one of that who was mourning. “Bisi, Bisi! Hmm. This one that you are smiling at me today, how have I found favor in your sight?” He knew she had been smiling because the food was late, but just wanted to make light of the whole situation. “ Err my dear Ibrahim, don’t mind that new girl I have. She has worked with me for two months and still cannot understand that tardiness is a sin as far as business is concerned. She arrived late today hence the delay in nkwobi preparation. Ignore what happened today kwo. Ejor ma bi nu".She was known for switching to Yoruba when she was unnerved so Ibrahim could figure that the apology came from a deep place within her. “Haba, aunty Bisi, it’s alright. That’s no problem at all. I had my friends here to chat with so time whiled away pretty fast.” “Ha! Thank you for understand Ibro. Ehen, you ehn! I had promised myself that the next time I saw you; I would not utter even one single word to you! You have not visited us for three months now and I was beginning to worry that the last meal you ate here might have given you food poisoning. What brings you here today sef?” Bisi quizzed as she grimaced at him. He was always fun to have around. If only she could have more time to have banters with her customers maybe, only maybe she’d have better sales. “ hahaha” He laughed as the lines surrounding his eyes creased a bit. “I have been in Minna with my father for the past three months helping him with business. He asked that I came over to see to some paper work. I’m sorry Bisi. I should have told you the last time I visited.” He answered her ever so politely , and that, she was glad about. “It’s alright, I just thought I’d ask. I better get back to work now. Make sure to say bye when you are leaving.” He nodded in response as he dived into the miniature calabash that contained his dinner.

He had wanted to ask her about the girl she had complained about but he didn’t want to be too forward. He would take his time to know more about her. Being in Minna for just three months had made him lose grasp of everything happening in his small town and he wanted to catch up with rapid alacrity. He would ask his boys about the latest news and gather knowledge about this girl. At least now he knew her name was Simi and She worked for Bisi. That was more than enough information to work with.
He motioned to Ahmed and paid for the three plates of food they had consumed and tipped him with 200 Naira. “Nagode oo brother Ibro. Please do not make it long until your next visit. We always love having you around.” Ibrahim nodded as he acknowledged the thanks.
He bid Bisi goodbye and walked to his car with his two friends following closely behind him.
