Family / I Thought Marriage And Money Would Bring Happiness by bigboyslim(m): 10:58am On Jul 16, 2014
What would you do in my predicament.

Here are the facts

1. I work and now make a decent salary(To the glory of God, not by might). Decent salary is a relative term but I make enough to live comfortably by the standards that I have set for myself

2. Wife does not work for reasons beyond our control. I won't go into details

3. My parents have been retired for a while

4. Wife's parents still working and making very decent money

5. We have a little baby

Now, I thought I would be happy making so much money but, I have found that I keep struggling with how much to spend on my family and how much to spend on parents. I know my parents want much more from me than I give and I can definitely give more than I give them now. I also want to give more to my parents but fear that wife would object. In 3 years of marriage, wife has never asked if I want to send money to my parents despite knowing that they are both retired. I find this weird and very unsettling. We keep a joint account. What percentage of ones income should go to supporting elderly parents and what percentage should go to your family upkeep?

Thanks for all the responses so far.

You have made some pretty solid points. I'm sifting through and taking notes. Sorry i won't be able to respond to any questions asked about revealing more details about my specific situation.

Thanks my people
Family / Help. Am I Overreacting by bigboyslim(m): 9:47pm On Sep 03, 2013
Here's my predicament. Got married 3yrs back and for reasons beyond our immediate control wifey has not worked since (won't go into details on a forum).

She does small business on the side but for now i'm the one with the steady income. The issue i'm struggling with
now is that wifey is a gifter. She doesn't spend much on herself but she says her greatest joy is spending on others.

Now, I on the other hand i'm not into gifting every new friend I make but this is wifey's specialty. I don't mind if she spends on herself at all but spending our spare cash on every friend is taking its toll on my mental state. Its not like there's that much spare cash to go around.

PS: We've talked about this but wife says she would rather starve than not give gifts. We also have a little baby and the cash is barely enough to have some left over savings

Any tips on addressing this issue.
Programming / Re: Cloud Hosting For JSF Web Application by bigboyslim(m): 1:21pm On Dec 29, 2012
Thanks a lot for the info guys. I've decided to go with Amazon Elastic Beanstalk. There's a bit of a learning curve but thankfully there are tons of documentation available and it's going well so far.
Programming / Cloud Hosting For JSF Web Application by bigboyslim(m): 2:29am On Dec 22, 2012
So, i've been playing around with JSF for the past couple of months and i've built this simple CRUD Web App using Primefaces. I'm thinking of putting the app on to a cloud host just for testing purposes so i'm only willing to shell out minimal cash if absolutely required.

Does anyone know of any cloud hosts that supports JSF? I've played around with Google App Engine a bit but it's frustrating me with all the errors I keep getting while trying to deploy.

Thoughts anyone?

@segsalerty.

I know what you mean. I would actually appreciate everybody's comment on the code. I refactored the code using kobojunkie's suggestion and the approach reduced the number of lines in my code(and hopefully execution time) by a great deal. So I have to say big thanks to Kobo first and foremost.

Anyways, all comments are welcome

Cheers

@Fayimora,

I finally had some time to refactor the code. I have pasted it here -> http://www.pastie.org/3752966

Let me know what you think.

Any improvements?

Cheers

@Fayimora,

Sir, no offence taken. I just gave you the reason why I don't want to paste the code on there or any other public sites for that matter. But you haven't tried to dispel my fears by saying "Oh never mind, they won't find it if they search" or something of that nature.

You are right I want the easy way out, but not in the way you think. I want to learn the easy way out.
Programming / Re: Java Collections Question by bigboyslim(m): 4:11pm On Mar 05, 2012
Thanks to you guys both

@Fayimora. Sorry I can't paste the code on that site. I don't know how that site operates. I submitted the code to someone and if they do a search and find it online, I could innocently get penalized for plagiarism.

@kobo,
Thanks for your analysis. That was really insightful. Creating a new class and storing the objects of that class in an ArrayList would have worked magic for me. I'll still try to solve the question using that approach once i get the time.

In my solution I created a new class which had 4 arrays and worked off of that using crude for and if loops. The code worked but I believe your approach would have reduced dev time by a great deal.

Thanks again to both of you.

Programming / Re: Java Collections Question by bigboyslim(m): 3:04pm On Mar 04, 2012
What I did

1. Used One temporary array to read in each Line of the file one at a time
2. Used the String.split method to split the line into 4
3. Stored each of the four coloumns into 4 separate arrays. I still retained the initial order of the file even though using 4 separate arrays
4. Then i extracted information from the 4 separate arrays

I had 2 hours to do this. Suffice to say it took me close to 10hours. If there ever was a poster boy for inefficiency.

Anyways. Can someone show how this can be done otherwise.
Programming / Java Collections Question by bigboyslim(m): 3:39pm On Mar 02, 2012
Hi Gurus.

Need some help with this challenge. I have a text file which contains the following information in this order

Name ! Category ! Description ! Cost

Content of the file is below:

Ade|groceries|bread|1.42
Deji|groceries|milk|15.00
Ayo|groceries|plantain|5.50
Ayo|groceries|milk|4.75
Ayo|furniture|table|15.00
Ayo|furniture|chair|44.90
Ade|fuel|methane|9.60

I need to generate two reports.

1. Total cost per Person
2. Total cost per Per Category Per Person

I am fairly familiar with the plumbing of the program. I just wanted to know from experts what Java collections come to your mind when attempting to solve this type of problem.

I have used arrays heavily in this program but I feel there might be other classes that will serve my purpose better.

thanks guys
Family / Re: Are You Feeling Suicidal? Come Here First! by bigboyslim(m): 11:20am On Dec 18, 2011
I've also been very depressed and almost suicidal at a point in life. For me, it was a result of many different negative circumstances. Poor finances(No job) + Sexual Frustation(Long term Long distance relationship with no end in sight) + Consistent disappointment from "friends". I definitely did think about suicide a lot but never really had a plan to carry it out. What helped me carry on was the support and love of my immediate family. I was in a far away land so the only things that kept me going was the phone calls I received from home. Of course i never told them i was depressed or anything but they just knew about my circumstances and offered words of encouragement and that made a lot of difference.

Right now, my circumstances have changed and improved significantly so I am not suicidal anymore though I still feel a little depressed from time to time. I dread those days and I am fearful of the future and how I would react if circumstances change again (God forbid).

Can anyone give a high level overview of multithreaded programming. Please include an example of when it could be useful in an app.

Travel / Re: Help On Schools In America For Masters Program by bigboyslim(m): 12:02pm On Mar 06, 2011
There might be schools that do not Require SAT or Toefl but even if you do get admission into such schools, getting a Student Visa will be tough because they believe any serious minded student should be able to go through the hassle of writing these standardized tests.

And I think you meant to mention GRE or GMAT and not SAT. SAT is used for undergraduate admission, while GRE and GMAT are used for graduate admission. Your post indicates master's degree so you should be looking at schools with no GRE or GMAT requirement. That said, it will be tough to convince the Visa Officer that one is serious about schooling in US without taking these tests.

Good luck.

I would appreciate your reasons.

Would be helpful if you could state your reasons too.

Logica and Candylips,

You guys are awesome.

Thanks very much.

What i didn't know before was how to pass parameters through the URL. I have only used submit buttons to send form parameters in the past. The URL query string sounds like a good approach.

How can I read in my Servlet code that I clicked on that link.

I'm guessing I would have to use the HttpRequest object.

@IG,

I just searched the book you recommended on Amazon and was quite surprised to see so many negative reviews. I'm just curios to know why you would recommend such a book. 10 (1 star) reviews out of a total of 28 is anything but impressive.

Those that have ears let them hear. Its really an easy decision to make. If you get a scholarship or you have the money to cover all expenses (and that means all expenses. I have witnessed students who were unable to get any type of jobs be it legal or illegal throughout their education) then take the leap otherwise do not count on luck or your risk taking skills cuz u'll most likely regret it. I made my decision based on the larger than life image painted by people already in yankee and ended up being burnt badly. I would never pray the same for anyone. A word is enough for the wise.
