Nairaland / General / "What Every Grad Should Know " By Dennis Prager by Juvante(m): 6:50pm On Jul 17, 2015 |
I stumbled on this speech by Dennis Prager of Prager University, and couldn't help but share it. "My dear college graduates. You have hopefully acquired a great deal of knowledge here over these past years. But in life, knowledge is considerably less important than wisdom. Here then are five ideas for your life. 1. The greatest struggle in your life should not be -- and, in fact, is not -- with society. It is with yourself. This idea -- taught by every great religion -- is not taught today. Instead we are taught that we have to battle society -- its sexism, racism, prejudices and it's other flaws. The overwhelming temptation is therefore to see whatever problems you have as coming from society, not from within yourself. But in a free and decent society such as ours, it is our own flawed human nature -- not a flawed society -- that is our biggest problem. 2. Use your common sense. For example, when you hear the words "studies show" -- outside of the natural sciences -- and you find that these studies show the opposite of what common sense suggests, be very skeptical. I don't recall ever coming across a valid study that contravened common sense. For example, I was told when I was in college that "studies show" that boys and girls are not inherently different; that they differ only because parents raise them in a sexist manner. This was nonsense then, and it is even more nonsensical now since we have brain scans showing how different the male and females brains are. 3. Race is unimportant. You've been taught that it is very important, but it isn't. The color of people's skin is as trivial as the color of their hair. Be guided by the idea of Viktor Frankl, the Jewish psychiatrist who suffered the horrors of a Nazi death camp and whose family was gassed. After the Holocaust, he was asked, "Do you hate the German race?" "No" he replied "I don't, there are only two races, the decent and the indecent." Remember that truism, and you can never be a racist. 4. Beware of good intentions. The 20th century was the bloodiest and cruelest century on record. Why? Not because so many more people were bad, but because so many people believed in bad ideas. Most Nazis and Communists in their time and Islamic terrorists in our time were not/are not necessarily sadists; they were normal people who believed in bad ideas. So here is a quick way to measure if an idea is good. Do not -- I repeat, do NOT -- ask if it feels good or if it has good intentions. Ask will it DO good? Will it make people kinder and more ethical? Will it encourage responsible behavior? Has it been tried before and if so, what were the results? What matters is how you act. If you do something bad, it is not important that you "meant well." And if you do something good, it doesn't matter if you did it for "selfish" reasons. So spend much less time monitoring your motives and far more time monitoring your actions. 5. Judeo-Christian values are the real counterculture today. Many people think that dressing weird or having their body tattooed or pierced is a statement of individuality or strength or rebellion against the dominant culture. Not true. The ultimate statement of counterculture and individual strength in America today is to take the God of Judaism and Christianity seriously. If you want to be an individual and to be strong, affirm a higher value system that enables you to say no to the prevailing culture. When you know to whom you are accountable and when you march to the beat of that Higher Drummer, you will lead a more peaceful, happy and good life. Good luck to all of you. I'm Dennis Prager." |
Business / Re: Shoprite Opened In Warri Yesterday? - See These Pics! by Juvante(m): 8:09am On Jun 12, 2015 |
daxlasaint: Point of correction, I am not from Uvwie and instead of name calling, point out the errors in my post. Ask your father to tell you how popular Sapele was in the eighties. Warri was just a boys Quarter compared to Sapele then. Did anyone ever refer to AT and P as located in Warri? Since you think you are more enlightened, why not tell me the importance of boundary markers or landmarks? Can you mention just one area in Uvwie that is currently "encompassed" by Warri? English words have actual meaning. Uvwie Kingdom meets Warri only at Enerhen (the popular Enerhen junction) and Edjeba ( the NPA Express Road junction and at the bridge at NNPC Housing Complex Road). Over to you, bro! 1 Like 1 Share |

Romance / The Search For Happiness! by Juvante(m): 9:16am On Jun 06, 2015 |
I just watch a movie with this title, "Hector and the Search for Happiness". It is about a young disillusioned Psychiatrist, Hector, who travelled to Asia, Africa, and North America in search of what really make people happy. In the course of his travel, he discovered some of the points listed below 1. Making comparisons can spoil your happiness 2. A lot of people think happiness means been richer or more important 3. Many people only see happiness in their future 4. Happiness could be the freedom to love more than one woman at the same time 5. Sometimes, happiness is not knowing the whole story 6. Avoiding unhappiness is not the road to happiness 7. Does the person that you love bring you predominantly (A) up or (B) down 8. Happiness is when you answer your calling 9. Happiness is been loved for who you are 10. Food - sweet potato stew 11. Fear is an impediment to happiness 12. Happiness is feeling completely alive 13. Happiness is knowing how to celebrate 14. Listening is loving 15. Nostalgia is not what it used to be. Was Hector right? Let us discuss!!! |

Darkrebel666:Pbs4real is right! Bayern dominated the Game. It was Guardiola ego that made him to go down 3 goals in less than 10 minutes. Bayern won the treble only because of the versatility of Javi Martinez, whose injury and continued ommission turned them to an ordinary team. Juventus is comparison in the midfield! A contrast of football philosophies! |
Politics / Re: NIMASA Pays Tompolo N1.5bn Monthly – Ex-chairman by Juvante(m): 8:46am On Jun 03, 2015 |
delishpot: For your information, his foundation has done more for the people of Warri South West than even the Delta State Government! Where was the ex-DG all this years? He might be right and he might be wrong. Sanusi did similar things at CBN and no one raised an eyebrow. Instead of crying wolf, he should tell us the reason for that payment. There must be paper work explaining that cash outflow. This is just another example of everything that is wrong with Nigerian geo-politics. Months ago, that was how another former Agriculture Minister fed us with lies about the GEJ Agriculture revolution, only for him to be busted by Adesina! The West is complaining that they lost control of NPA, no one is talking about the new sanity in the port system of revenue collection! In the history of Nigeria, the first time an Igbo man was Army Chief and NDA Commandant was during the GEJ era. Under Gen Ihejirika, Boko Haram was just another militant group. He was accused of genocide by the North but when he left office, a huge swathe of the North was under Boko Haram sway. But till date, no one has ever accused the old spymaster, Gen Gusau, of fueling the Boko Haram crises! He is the Defence Minister in charge of trillions of naira, but everyone is blaming GEJ! As much as I don't condone the selective manner in which Kuku implemented the amnesty programme, it was a good idea at that time when Yaradua negotiated and signed with the militants, just to mop up arms in the creeks. This was the same fearless Yaradua who ordered the openly Islamic fanatic Army Chief, Dambazau (who Buhari is now considering for the NSA post) to roll tanks into Maiduguri to crush Boko Haram, before the politicians used that pretext to settle scores and murdered their leader extra - judicially. The Chanomi creeks pipeline which supplies crude oil to the PPMC - Warri Tankfarm was blown, and it led to the shut down of the Warri and Kaduna Refineries. If you can recall that the then Naval Chief, Ogohi (if I am not mistaken) boasted before the National Assembly that it is impossible to attack any deepwater oil installation. Days later, MEND flag was seen flying from the platform at Bonga Field, a feat considered only possible by Al Shabaab! For your information, Tompolo was in possession of several armoured gunboats, which was never surrendered. His Camp 5 abode which was built by Julius Berger, could house thousands of fighters in the creeks. It has surface to air missiles and had its own refinery! Just google it. This was the period of Presidents OBJ and Yaradua. Fast forward to the era of GEJ, a civillian. It was not just tribalism. He was simply scared of the militants. The Northerners are complaining that GEJ should be charged for genocide, but let everyone google and read about the bombardment of Okorenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom. It is on record that the Army publicly apologised for the attack from air, land and sea of a defenceless community where not a single arrest was made. If you want to know the level of arms stockpiling in the creeks, talk to any member of the JTF in the creeks. Only God will save Nigeria, not APC or PDP! 2 Likes |

Isaacmacdon: You can't really understand how right you are. Most people nowadays are hooked on social media. Their lives revolve around their qwerty keyboard. They forget that it is like a drug. The more you go online, the more you ache for a connection with strangers who you really don't know in real time. That is why life online is referred to as virtual reality. It is not real but the lure is too strong. Your piece is a timely warning to all. 1 Like 1 Share |

Cheeba: As much as I respect your freedom of speech, that does not mean that you should malign my moniker online. 1. I am not a scammer. My moniker is the Latin word for help. I have assisted a lot of people free of charge that were seeking for travel info both on and off Nairaland. You can check out my posts on the travel Section, most have been wiped in the data loss that affected Nairaland. I have consistently posted email addresses and phone numbers of my contacts in different universities in order for them to contact them directly, especially in Austria. Likewise, those who needs assistance at the Federal Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs, and also at Alagbon Close for police report. I have never collected a dime from anyone. I dare anyone to come out and post any deal that involved me and it went bad. I stopped because several people took their Nigerian cunny ways and put their hosts, who I linked them to ,in trouble. Right now, anyone who contacts me for assistance, I direct them to Olugbenro Falola of Structural Solutions Ltd, UK. I don't have time to help everyone. That phase of my life is over. 2. I am not looking for cash from any body online. I am a IADC/WELLCAP certified petroleum engineer who have presented papers at SPE sponsored conferences. As for travel papers, Sorry, I dont need to marry before I will have a permanent stay in a foreign country. All I need is a well paying job and I stay out of crime over a period of time. The highest amount required to get a study visa to live in Oslo, the world most expensive city is 11,000 Euros, not to talk of hungry EU countries like Croatia and Slovakia. Shikena! 3. My personal life is my concern. It is a free world and I am free to date anyone. As for her, unlike some people do, I don't believe in broadcasting my offline activities on Nairaland . What happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas! Have a nice evening! Juvante |

@ Zuluking, Bigflex, or your other numerous monikers, you are spoiling for a war which I will not give you! I will advice you to direct your energies into something useful. Only pimply boys that are still wet behind their ears, insult older people. I am too cultured to stoop to your level to insult your parents. You can hide behind monikers and insult me for all you like, but you are a coward. A real man does not attack flying false flag. Post a link to your profile on LinkedIn, then, you can measure your snake against my Tree. This is one reason why I love LinkedIn. Your professional life, research and publications is open to all, not to talk of recommendations! Till then,............. Go and get a life! |

My brother, that's why I always advice people 2 expand

lives in norway, she's a part time student and health worker
and she is part white, part indian and part black! Her kids
are half black also! When she finds U worth the effort she
may also confirm all the things I just told you about, I won't
give U her e-mail address or her phone number because
I'm
a razorblade nigga! @ the end of the day FUNLORD is a
boss! Ask of me and get familiar with my level! The game is
easy if you sabi how 2 play! D" Now compare it to mine 1. She is not a part time student, rather, she is a Full time student. She has never been a health worker. 2. She is not part indian, part white, and part black! I don't even know where you got that idea from! Have u ever seen her parents' pictures? She is a coloured Southie, and you should know how they look, since you have expanded your horizons! 3. Her kids are not half caste. Do you know the nationality of their father? Prove me wrong or shut up! Can anyone ask him to call me a liar?? |

First thing tomorrow, go the biggest bookshop and buy this book-" lexis and structure" by Olu Tomori.
