The Nigerian Army is not against any of its personnel marrying a civilian, but there should always be a right time for everything.

But when you are providing official services to someone, you are not expected to be having anything remotely romantic with them.

That is why it would have been punishable for an American soldier to be displaying anything remotely amorous with an Afghanistan woman during the Afghanistan war.

My dad was with the NA in Liberia. They were never allowed to have anything romantic or amorous with the locals (the Liberian women) because they were there to provide peace-keeping services, not get romantically linked.

In the law, there is something referred to as abuse of position.

If a lecturer is romantically linked with his student, people like you may excuse it for love. But the truth is that the law feels that the student is disadvantaged by the difference in position, and that the lecturer is taking advantage of his superior position over the student, or that the lecturer is exploiting the student's inferior position.

Soldiers can get married to civilians. There is no law against that.

But a soldier cannot get romantically linked with a civilian directly under her care.

A nurse cannot be romantically linked to a patient under her care.

A lecturer cannot be romantically linked with his student.

A doctor cannot be romantically linked with his patient.

A lesson teacher cannot be romantically linked with his student.

And the list goes on, and it is all due to the differences in position.

For a lecturer to be romantically linked with a student, the law must see them as having equal position during which there is no room for exploitation.

For example, a lecturer of University of Ibadan may fall in love with a student of Harvards because he does not have the opportunity to influence her academics. So the relationship can be deemed not forced.

The law is an ass (apologies to Mabel Segun), but the law is the law, and we need it to keep us in check. Without the law, everyone would do whatever they liked.

.... Rules are rules sir.... This is Nigeria not USA..... If she didn't want to live and abide by those rules, she should not have joined the army....i don't think I've seen a civilian proposed to a female American soldier while she's on her duty post..... Rules are what seperates us from animals..... If all soldiers get engaged on duty this way, then surely, it would not be called an army anymore

The female soldier was there on official duty, she had no business frollicking with a trainee of the organization whose official duty she is saddled with.

Also, the NA statement shows that she is less than three years in service, therefore less experienced in the dynamics of the military. Nothing wrong in dating ur staff or patient if it is credible. Love can be found anywhere and with anyone. U just have to make sure u don’t disrespect ur position and make look inappropriate and it must be mutual not forced.
