Detongue: D truth is dat d Isokos and Urhobos are one. D Urhobos are different group of ppl with simillar language and Isoko is one of such group, like d Okpes, Udus, Effurun, Ujegwens etc. So dey are one. because of d oppressive and dominary attitude of some of dis groups, d Isokos decided not to b called Urhobo.
For political reasons and when dey want to fight their common 'enemy', it is den an Isoko man will remember dat he is an Urhobo.

Partially True cos the similairity between my own Isoko clan(rep. Isoko North) and General Urhobo is so much dat sometyms i wonder if my dad is speaking urhobo or isoko....

E.g in My clan

Una weldone o. I don read all una discussions and must say: It really helped.
I'm Yoruba on my father's side, while Delta state from my mother's. Infact my mum's mixed: Half uhrobo, half isoko.
I sabi my papa language, I fit speak am well, make I talk so.
But the thing when dey hard me na my mama language: Isoko and Uhrobo. I no sabi the language at all.
For house na so so yoruba I dey here them speak, and my mother teaches me very little of Isoko, not much at all.
All I can say in Isoko is:
-Migwo (its a greeting)
-Vre do. (response of an elder to the greeting)
-Keria (sit down)
-Oghene (God)
-Wosobo ran or something like that I no want disgrace myself for here (Should me wash your hands, if I'm not making a mistake)
-Riso da me (an insult my mother oftenly says when she's angry lol and even though I think I know, I ain't gonna say the meaning cause I'm sooo ashamed lol)
-Gna(go)
-Unu (Mouth)
Then maybe I know other little words like this but nothing else.
I really wanna learn to speak it, cause I love the language and I love my mum's tribe and culture! I'm ashamed I can't speak it! cry embarassed
Isoko and Uhrobo wadooo!

What part of Isoko is your mum from?

Thanks, Efemena.
I never really bothered to ask and you may also think it's strange but am not sure, maybe south? I'll ask and then tell you.
Yeah thanks for the correction, my mum knows both, so she really doesen't alway specify whil teaching me.

grin grin grin, reading through your post gave me some nolstagia moments, especially the Riiso Da Ame part-- My mum used it so often when growing up that it was sorta a compliment rather than an insult.
In my books, that's one of the funniest Isoko insult cliché with absolutely no tenable meaning whatsoever. That's the fun behind the word really!
For the benefit of those who are curious: it means " Eat faeces and Drink water" --
Like seriously, What does that freaking mean?? grin.

I will consult my mum for a list of some tongue-lashing words she inadvertently use on us when she's so furious about our constant stubbornness (Five all boys gang) grin

Can't remember myself but it was something to do with the main duties of the chief's juju priest.

Out of interest, I'm curious to know what the main mode of dressing fir adults was pre the arrival of the missionary colonial masters? So say early 19th century..
