Even at 18 her parents still beat her. They drain her emotionally. She's very scared of people and pain. She's become used to it. There are scars all over her body. Her arms, legs, back.. bears the mark of this daily 'wire' flogging. But they love her... she knows they do. Her prayer is 'Lord, don't let me hurt my own kids this much'. Should a child be trained into adulthood this way? She's still very pretty.. but the scars on her heart and body remains....

Not every offense should be corrrected with the rod. Beating kids incessantly is abuse. However, once in a while the rod should be used. Trust me. Silent treatment has a much more disciplinary effect than unnecessary flogging and beating.
lol na ur gf or wife Silient treatment 4 children again

tongue lashing is worse than beatings.

As an african man i believe in the adage which say "flog him once and he would flee twice".

but thats not how my wife sees it,she is always keen on pampering the kids base on the facts that she was born and brought up in the states and was not subjected to such method of discipline.

So my question is, is beating a form of ABUSE or DISCIPLINE?

Never, beating your child is the best discipline ever!!! Or would you tell ur child's teacher not to beat her?
Re: BEATING YOUR KIDS; Discipline Or Abuse? by HopeAlive14(m): 11:43am On Oct 23, 2014
Do not be consumed by anger while beating otherwise you will end up inflicting harm than good. Beat with the aim of correctiing and with a mind of love.

Well, be careful of your choice of words when tongue lashing. I can't remember the feeling of being flogged as a child (home & school), but I remember the ill words spoken to me in the name of correction (not from my parents though).

I will use word of mouth and flogging interchangeably.

Yea,,the use of words should be guarded with caution...

I'll stick to that.

My Dad has a way of advising someone to the extent that you'll feel remorse instantly and want to change.

It always works.

Re: BEATING YOUR KIDS; Discipline Or Abuse? by Wisegeek01(m): 1:14pm On Oct 23, 2014
That's discipline, but I guess what's really important about discipline is letting the kid know why he's been disciplined at times (like when they are old enof to understand stuff) so they don't grow up hating on their parents. .. But I don't support the use of some kinda stuff like belts, Rods or actually beating em up, like u were wrestling or something* Just saying tho*
Re: BEATING YOUR KIDS; Discipline Or Abuse? by Nobody: 1:16pm On Oct 23, 2014
I think we are missing something here:

floging is not discipline but punishment and i think we are mixing up the two.

Discipline is the forming of the mind and character for responsible living while punishment is the causing of pain and discomfort for wrong doing. The two are different and lets not get it mixed up.

In administering discipline, you sometimes punish. Discipline is a complex whole which include punishment, reward, concelling, instruction etc. Remove punishment and you may never be able to discipline.

I find it ironic that majority, if not all, of those who claim floging in barbaric and backward and counter productive, are also pro jail term and solitary confinement, pro chemical castration etc.

i am currently a student teacher and there are these two very notorious noise makers. Their own case is so bad that while you look at them in the eyes and tell them not to make noise, thats when they do it the more.

One day, i got fed up and reported them to the principal who took them out to serve punishment. After they finished serving the punishment and i was going to their class for extra lesson that very day, one of the boys who were punished earlier saw me coming and closed the door to my face!

I completely subscribe to beating children in this part of the world cos this kids can actually get under your skin. I beat my kids and they neither hate nor fear me but and they understand the limits of my playfulness with them. I also talk to them when the need arises. The thing is parents should just understand how to balance the correction methods however it is important that when a child is threatened to be reported to his parents he or she should cringe a.little otherwise we are only breeding little tyrants

Lashes on the butt :discipline .after 03warnings for the same offense

Beating/lashes all over the bodies= abuse, the belt should b used to correct and not to mark the body + itnshould never be used as first intention. Children are not horses or donkeys
Re: BEATING YOUR KIDS; Discipline Or Abuse? by chronique(m): 1:41pm On Oct 23, 2014
If done sensibly and reasonably,it is discipline. If done without proper caution and care and excessively,it becomes abuse.

It is a tricky situation. Some people say picking up a crying baby every time they cry is spoiling them! I di craze for leave my pikin make e cry! Most parents just vent their anger on their kids in the name of discipline. My neighbour beats her 2 years 5 month old daughter every now and then. This morning as I listened to the confrontation between her and the little girl that obviously ended in spankings I was taken aback! The little girl got 30 solid spankings for defecating on the bed. She is a single mother of three little children and I seriously think what she thinks is discipline is actually revenge on the kids. She is quick to curse them etc..

I do not beat my kids, but I do shout at them with threats of a good beating. Sometimes I pick my belt and frighten them. It is always enough to make them adjust. Scolding is enough to make my little boy cry! I would never use a cane on my kids. The guilt would be too apparent. I was a stubborn little boy. I had enough beatings from my mum to cover my born and unborn kids!..Lol

If one had the kind of 3 kids (all boys) that I have, reasonably occasional flogging or spanking spiced with dialogue or scolding would arguably be inevitable under the present Nigerian socio-economic climate. Parenting is such a taxing calling that has no one-size-fits-all approach. Regardless, circumstances and timing are critical considerations for effective parental discipline.

what are u talking about then since the holy book (as u observed) adviced to use cane on children in-order to mode them for better in their adulthood.

I never blamed ma parents for a second dealing hard on me with cane when i was a kid and in even my late adolescent years. I pretty much appreciated it.

Even if future Nigeria law prohibits that act, i must continue to reciprocate that which was perpetrated by my parents and supported by the scripture.

can you pls tell me how beating can mode someone for better adulthood? Can you tell me the lessons(emotional, psychological) you've learnt by someone using force or beating you?

I never blamed my parents too, they didnt know better, they arent open to other ways or possiblities of dealing with children, if they did they wouldnt do that

the last paragraph shows you're a fundamentalist. Doing something because people have been doing it or because a book says so isnt the best reason to do it(the something). Why cant you think for yourself? challenge the status quo, look for answers, look at things objectively, analyzing every subject on the matter.
