If your plantain farm is located in Owode,Igbogila or any part of Ogun state, you need to be extremely careful.

I will.bring you more information i gathered in the course of my research in due time.

I.believe this link will help you get more information on the disease.

The disease was first discovered in 2012 by IITA in collaboration with the University of Ibadan and
the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, the disease is now widespread in Ilashe, Odan-Itoro, Ido-Ologun, and Igbogila, in Ogun State.

"The spread of the disease into new areas can
initially remain undetected, complicating timely
eradication work and prevention of new outbreaks. Once the disease is present in a region, it is extremely difficult to eradicate"- lava kumar a virologist i

No durable sources of resistance have yet been
identified. Eradication of infected plants and
planting healthy planting material is the best
available solution.

The Use Of Good suckers.
Making use of good suckers is very important and can make or mar your plantain business venture.

This Top.bunchy virus disease were spread by the use of the traditional suckers so next you are using the traditional suckers,you might have to think twice of the disease it can transfer to the farm.
If you have plantain farms in ogun state,check for symptoms ( i am going to be showing you what you need to look for on your farm) and if you are establishing your plantain farm in Ogun state,you must factor this into consideration before venturing into this business.

This is the best suckers to make use of - the tissue cultured suckers
It gives uniform growth,uniform fruiting, disease resistant and good yield

See the Advantage of using good suckers
On 1 acre of land using hybrid cultured suckers
1000 suckers produces 1000 bunches
selling at N800-N1200/bunch
Revenue = N800k

On 1 acre of land using traditional suckers
1000 suckers produces 200 bunches
selling at N800-N1,200 per bunch
Revenue= N200k

can you spot the difference in the revenue?

Re: Hidden Truths About Plantain Farming Business by Lesgupnigeria(m): 7:27am On Jan 20, 2015
@johnnyessence:
You cant Plant tissued cultured suckers and the local suckers together because the other suckers will transmit diseases and pest to the tissued cultured suckers.

One of the advantage of using the tissued cultured is that you have Diseased free farms- your farm can be secured from the Ravaging bunchy top virus disease if you make use of this suckers especially in ogun state where the disease is now being transmitted on daily basis

One of challenges faced by plantain farmers is non-uniform growth of plantain which is caused by bad suckers but with the use of hybrid tissue cultured suckers, you can be assured of uniform growth.
If you have uniform growth of your plantain,they will also have uniform fruiting,(they will produce fruits at the same time and you can harvest all at the same time.

With the use of tissue cultured suckers,If you plant 1000suckers,you can be sure that you will have 100% survival rate with uniform growth and you can also harvest all at the same time.

You will never have uniform growth making use of the other suckers (check pictures above to see it) and they will not fruit at the same time.
The implication is that you have to incurred transportatuon cost everytime you come for harvesting on the farm and also the plantain fruit from this sucker is not usually big.

Not harvesting once will increase your transportation cost,harvesting cost and overall cost of production.

With increased transportation cost,harvesting cost and lower yield using this type of suckers you might not make profit from your plantain business venture.

I hope i have been able to answer your questions
