Some of the comments on this most educational thread that should make us reflect on what we have lost as a people and a nation are cringe-worthy. People turning an article that should reinvigorate a sense of national pride and preservation into an avenue for political mudslinging and crass displays of complete idiocy.

True to some extent. But many things destroyed can be rebuilt or restored, partially at least.

Even those left like the moats were not preserved. 30 years ago, lots of the moats were in a pristine state. Even some ramparts were still very visible.

Lots of the stuff were declared/gazetted as National Heritage by FG decades ago, which means even Edo State govt cannot tamper with it. Not even to preserve or repair officially.

But FG never does its job. So there we're.

Many other Benin towns like Udo had their own moats and walls/ramparts too.

I read in the University that Benin City once had one of the best road networks in the world,which was comparable to what was obtainable in Amsterdam

The roads are still here, though some are really dilapidated and some are still very nice.
But some i need money youths now sell water way/moat and people end up buying the plot and filling it with sand
and ending up diverting water to these well carved roads in some of the areas.
