Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by hatch: 1:07pm On Jun 08, 2010
This has been on my mind for quite some time but i personally thought that it was just me that noticed this trend anytime i am in the Uk for a visit, but recently some of my friends who also got first hand cold shoulder treatment from these so called "Permanent Resident" Nigerians in UK who often act in ways that suggest that they are envious of we Nigerians who can afford to just come over for visits in the Uk rather that come and join them in the hustle over there.

My second cousins who live in Liverpool always try as much as possible to avoid me visiting them anytime i am in town and sometimes i want to believe that probably it is their conservative nature at work but when the tables turned around and they were the ones visiting us at our family house in Nigeria, the youngest of my 3 cousins confessed that it seemed that the other 2 had issues or just outrightly jealous that i could afford to come over to UK like 2wice a year .As funny as it may seem this has always been the case with some of my old school mates who decided to make UK was their final destination. They are always obtaining their visiting counterparts who come for holiday.

Even on Nairaland, there was the same attitude of outright cold shoulder on the thread about the Lagos Dump hustler (Vocal Slender) whom by fate and goodwill is currently in the UK for some shows. right on that thread it seems the permanent residency Nigerians in UK are getting so worked up that they couldn't hide their envy about this guy's visit. undecided undecided
Re: Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by Nobody: 1:51pm On Jun 08, 2010
Guess so. Many naija dudes in the UK are semi-broke hustlers that barely try to stay afloat. A lot also don't have valid papers and cannot get decent jobs. The ones with valid papers do not have jobs that pay that well and so are unable to come back to Naija often to 'show off'. The ones without papers can't even come back because they may never be able to get visas to return. In either case, many of them are stuck in a rot, so to speak. When they now see 'lucky' folks who dart in and out of UK 'shere shere' to distract their work they can't help but feel resentful. . .especially if you're financially much better off than they are. They either avoid you to save their pride so that you wouldn't witness their skint condition first hand, or they shamelessly 'tax' you all over the place. But then the few that are quite successful and rich over there are in another class altogether: you would do all the envying when you meet those. Different strokes, I suppose.

may i ask why you're taking the issue so personally?
Re: Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by hatch: 2:17pm On Jun 08, 2010
Contrary to your outright conclusion that i am taking the issue personal. No i am not taking it personal, even if you care to go through the entire thread you will notice that i did not bother to comment on that thread but rather play the spectator.

Back to the issue i have raised,i only gave my own honest opinion of what i felt was gradually being displayed on that thread in comparison with the issue and attitude of Permanent Nigerians Residents in the UK. It is now left for you to debunk my claims rather than clinching on to that thread.

as per your cousins, maybe they're jealous of you or it could be some other thing.

Life ain't easy ANYWHERE. . . .
To live a life of luxury, you must pay for it. . . . .
There's nothing to even suggest you fare better than your friends over here. . . . .What they lack in their pockets, they have in the quality of life.
Whereas, men like you have traded the quality of life(no light, no water, pollution, mosquitoes and security) for cash in your pockets.

Well put!

@Poster, I would not really consider it a trend in the way that you do there, and it certainly does not apply to a majority, in my opinion. Have you tried considering the other side of the situation?

Only recently, a friend of mine who lives in the UK complained about the treatment he gets from a long time friend of his, whenever the guy comes in from Nigeria. The guy expected to be housed and dined for free, while he ( the guy from Nigeria) goes out to spend his money on luxury products and women. Another problem my friend complained of was that his Nigerian friend would rarely informed him in advance of when he would be in the UK and if he is coming alone. The last time the guy showed up from Nigeria unannounced with his wife, expected my friend to house both of them for free, and ended up buying loads of designer goods without even compensating my friend in any way for all the stress. After that stress, my friend denied him board on the next trip. Said he had had enough.

Well said Sauron.

A lot (not all) of visitors in the UK from naija stay with friends or family. So they pay no hotel or accomodation costs.

They should try going on a 2 weeks holiday to the Seychelles where you pay for flights, hotel and meals etc. I dont think they would be travelling "twice" a year in that case.

Like kobojunkie had earlier said, Well put.
i agree with your points and accept that yes we may still lack in quality of life but you and i know that most of the "runway soldiers" who prefer to call Diaspora home usually the ones that are just not man enough to face the realities of life and take the bull by his horns.

You complain about the council taxes earlier, what you pay for in taxes i also pay in the form of money i spend to fuel my generators, service it, install my pumping machine and service my cars due to the bad roads.

So you see that what goes around comes around only that in this case it is in different forms. I love my freedom and i guess that is why i will rather call Nigeria home and try to be part of the success story once Nigeria is great again. Someday even if its going to take a while.  wink

Is  inferiority complex or superiority complex  a BLACK man thing?

All over nairaland all you read is about:

Lagos better or inferior Enugu
Ibo better or inferior Hausa
Nigerians @ home  better or inferior to Nigerians in Uk
Nigerians better or inferior Ghanaians

You need to understand workings of life in the UK before generalizing.

Nobody is beefing you, but they might not have the convenience of time while you visit.

But, those also exist there in Nigeria. Why do you feel harping on those in the UK will help your point in some way?

What?  What has your spending on generator to do with taxes?  You do realize that there are better ways of getting power than spending your money than on generators? Also, do you know that in some places in Nigeria today, people actually pay taxes? That you are able to avoid it for one reason or another is not a valid argument of any sort. Yes, some complain of taxes but they pay it anyways, because they UNDERSTAND, underline the word UNDERSTAND, the benefits of paying taxes.

It's not as easy as you think.
The so called "runaway soldiers" work TWICE as hard. They manage to maintain a comfortable life abroad while they still send money home to their parents and relatives. Who do you send money to from Nigeria?

You complain about the council taxes earlier, what you pay for in taxes i also pay in the form of money i spend to fuel my generators, service it, install my pumping machine and service my cars due to the bad roads.

Council tax is compulsory here. . . . .not negotiable.
The money you pay to fuel your generating plant, pumping machine and service your cars are optional.
U might decide not to do it - no bailiff will come and smash your door or take you to court for failing to pay.

Good for you but majority are here working their hands and knees to help their parents back home.
Living abroad is almost a double life cos you are spending TWICE as much.
Your friends pay bills here and i am sure many of them have huge projects they are committed to in Nigeria.

Re: Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by isimili: 3:15pm On Jun 08, 2010
Sorry Hatch but i think that you may have been hanging around the wrong people. There are many Nigerians in the UK (self made professionals and successful business men and women) who make between 500k and a million or more per annum. They are very busy and very fullfilled too. Therefore they won't even notice if IBB and OBJ land the UK in their private jets spreading £s on the streets. these people live in absolute peace, quiet and over flowing contentment. The rest on the other end of the scale, are very happy confident people who work hard for every penny they make and do not care about wanton display of wealth or affluence without foundation or transparent means. Look where that behaviour got the iboris of this world.

If you ask me i will say that your cousins and friends are possibly too busy working as everyone does here and do not have enough holiday to meet up just like you who is on holidayand relaxing. As there are no inflated contracts in tthis country and prison awaits anyone who tries to make money the way some people in Nigeriado, every minute counts. In Nigeriayou have drivers, messengers, house girls and boys but London is a do it yourself country (DIY). Think about this and understand that time is supreme here and unless you are personally on annual leave or break, many people can't socialise on short notices. jealousy is a Nigerian thing because people have too much time to mess around with.

@ Hatch#

We are not jealous of you but most of us are just fed up when you come over and tell us how things are less stressful than in the UK.

I'm glad that you have made it in Nigerian terms but how many of the following conditions apply to you?

Do you employ underage children to look after your home or do you pay a qualified nanny, cook, gardener?

Do you hire a driver on a pittance and does he have any employment rights?

In order for you to enjoy your home/cars do you have to have big ugly gates, barbed wire and security guards outside your MODEST home?

Can you even travel safely at night?

Most (legal) Nigerians abroad are playing by the rules in the country they reside in for example.

We pay our staff the legal minimum wage and usually more. Employees also have rights and there is free medical care and welfare.

I do not need to have gates, barbed wire or security guards outside my house.

We do not employ 12 year old house boys/girls on a pittance.

We do not expect drivers to work 24 hours a day for a pittance.

AND

We do not turn up at relatives houses unannounced and expect them to drop everything to entertain us or start cooking elaborate meals.

ALSO

I am very VERY relieved that there is no madam/oga,  "do you know who I am(not)?" wahala to put up with in everyday life.

But my main concern is that  having seen both side (as I have ) you will still prefer Nigerian conditions to  the UK

@OP,
Another one of these 'innocent, unbiased, truth seeking" questions. I see through it all. It still strives to support the underlying theme that, 'the runaway soldiers who have chosen to call Diaspora home' (your words) are jealous of those who can afford to travel twice a year. One would wonder who is really jealous here.

Why are Nigerians back home always trying to prove a point. Why is there the need to prove a point that those in DIaspora are not better than you, common, I mean, you can afford to travel 2ce a year (I can feel you breaming with pride, that you can afford to go to London 2ce a yr). GTFOH!!! If you feel people are jealous of ou because you are better than them, then stop showing up at their door, stop booking your tickets before finding out if it wil be convenient for them, or if they have plans,  stop asking them to give you invitation letter. Why dont you just show up in London, get a cab from the airport and get to that hotel in Park Lane or any other city for that matter - I am sure there are good hotels everywhere- and do your tourist business before heading back.

Some people save and make all they can so that they can take it out of Nigeria and blow it. You then wonder why that money will never create jobs in Nigeria.

When these people come, they expect you to leave your job and take them shopping. It is true, some of them spend tons of money especially when you know they are not on salary but on "contracts" looking for where to hide their loot. Some of the stuff you guys buy, an average Briton ( I do not live there BTW) can not afford it.

Little do they realize that these are top ten or five percent of Nigerians that do not live on 300 naira a day. But they spend most of the money in Nigeria. How many professionals can afford to travel twice a year in Nigeria? How many of them even have regular jobs?

Your friends in Briton are not jealous but disgusted because they know the source of your money and from the way you spend it, that you did not work hard for it.

These day in Nigeria, by the time you put kids in good schools, try to live above water, suffer in car from one end of the City to another, you have little left to enjoy. A friend said it all, that in Nigeria they make others work for money for them but in Briton, you work for money yourself.

That is why everything is contract in Nigeria. Tell them to get you a laborer or a plumber. They will tell you they want to give you an estimate for a contract so that they can pay the laborer 2000 naira a day while they pocket the difference to travel. No matter what they make, lion share is spent outside of the Country. Even people who make less than 50,000 naira a month, will ask you what is 100,000 naira? The you wonder why they steal?

No, they are not jealous but disgusted. Any hard working Nigerian on vacation is usaully well received and cater for but as work and schedule permit. Actually some of these visitors are given money and present out of hard earned money. They also take a load home to friends and relatives. Do not compare those to yourself when they are aware of your loot.

A Country of contracts and no jobs.

Well said.  cool

For me, whenever I go back to 9ja, I stay in a hotel and I don't inconvenient anyone; but when they come, they'll forget there's something like hotels and feel you should just accommodate them for free and they are wealthy.  sad

I only accommodate those that are not so rich in Nigeria and I often plan with them well ahead before they visit. I even spend money on them as much as I could to make them feel comfortable and their visit memorable.
