Prolific best selling author and internationally renowned preacher and business coach, Dr. Myles Munroe of Bahamas Faith Ministries International and his wife Mrs. Ruth Ann Munroe, died in a plane crash earlier today in the Bahamas. According to The Associated Press, the plane, a Lear Lear 36 executive jet, reportedly struck a crane at the Grand Bahama Ship Yard, exploding on impact and crashing into the ground near a junkyard area.

The Bahamas Ministry of Transport and Aviation reported that the Lear 36 executive jet departed the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau, Bahamas at 4:07PM for the Grand Bahama International Airport, a privately owned international airport in Freeport, Bahamas with nine people on board.

The plane crashed while making an approach for landing at Grand Bahama International Airport at 5.10pm, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation said. The crash killed all nine people on board the private jet. The identities of the other people on board have not yet been confirmed. The cause of the crash was not immediately determined, though there had been heavy rain across the region. A full investigation is expected to begin on Monday.

Politics / I Butcher Human Beings In 2 Minutes, Says Boko Haram Chief Killer by webaplanet(m): 7:58am On Aug 07, 2014
ABUJA — The Chief Butcher of the Boko Haram sect, Zakari Mohammed Ardo, yesterday, gave a chilling description of how the terrorist group used to slaughter people they capture, saying it only takes him two minutes to butcher victims and enemies condemned to death.

Ardo, who had been reported in some media (not Vanguard) as having escaped from Police custody, said the group’s butchering committee was made up of five persons of which he is the chairman, pointing out that the other members will hold down the already tired victim while he cuts off the head.

Speaking through an interpreter in Kanuri, the ‘Chief Butcher’ who claims to be 30 years old and from Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, said: “I joined the Boko Haaram group two years ago. Before I was arrested, I have slaughtered five people.”

Police parade suspect, debunk rumour of his escape

Briefing newsmen on why self acclaimed “butcher” of the Boko Haram sect was paraded, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, said the Police were using the opportunity to debunk his reported escape from custody.

“For the past few days, there has been very strong rumours that the suspect escaped from custody, it is primarily in response to that, that we have decided to bring him out to interact with you in the best culture of transparency of policing operations.

“The suspect, as a high profile member of the insurgent group, was being investigated to extract some information that would be relevant in the fight against terror, hence his detention in an unknown Police facility was of utmost importance to the force.

“The Police had informed the media of the arrest of the ‘chief butcher’ last month and taken into custody on July 12, while he was fleeing from Bauchi at the Balmo forest camp of the group.

“He was said to have actively participated and was linked with the slaughter of seven people including women and children,” Mba said.

Health / Why Ebola Differs From Other Viruses by webaplanet(m): 7:44am On Aug 07, 2014
The Ebola Virus Disease is the enemy knocking at the door of many West African countries and its effects are fast spreading.

Unlike other viruses, such as the Hepatitis A, B,C, which can stay in the body fluids of an infected person for 15 years without any symptoms, the Ebola virus, which symptoms include bleeding from the mouth and anus, can kill its victims within days .

A professor of Epidemiology and Community Health Science, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Tanimola Akande, describes the Ebola virus, which is ravaging Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and has killed a nurse in Nigeria, as the biggest health challenge facing the sub region at present.

Akande says that its mode of transmission is a major reason why it is deadlier than most viruses.

He says, “That Ebola has no cure is not the reason why it is deadly.HIV also has no cure, yet it does not kill all its victims, if it is properly managed. Ebola is deadlier because it is easy to contract; it is in all the body fluids of an infected individual as its infection can be through saliva, blood, sweat, sperm, excreta, body tissue. It can also be contracted by touching the surface an infected person has touched.”

“Also, the natural host for Ebola is fruit bats, chimpanzees and other forest animals that many eat daily in different parts of the country. You can get it just by coming in contact with the blood of an infected animal. Any virus that can be contracted through food has the potential to wipe off many lives.”

The physician, who says that Ebola virus has very tricky symptoms, which often mimic that of common illness, such as malaria, dengue, lassa and typhoid fever, notes that many health workers may have already come in contact with an infected patient without knowing it.

He adds, “When a patient comes to your hospital and presents you with symptoms, such as fever, headache, general body pain, you are likely not to wear gloves or biohazards suits before treating the patient. That is the tricky part. You are infected before you know it is Ebola.”

To contain the transmission of the disease, Akande urges Nigerians to stop eating bush meat, as well as to wash their hands and fruits regularly before eating.

He also advises health workers to wear protective kits always while attending to their patients.

Akande states, “We have been talking about HIV/AIDS, but Ebola is deadlier than HIV/AIDS. People who have HIV live for years if they take their drugs but any contact with an infected Ebola person is almost a death sentence because the virus has no vaccines, and no drugs. The best one can get is only palliative management”.

Ebola is the nightmare virus. It is feared as the second coming of the plagues of the 1400s. Why is this one virus so much more deadly than other viruses? Simply put, experts list five reasons why everyone must watch out for this virus.

Low survival rates

The chance of survival is almost zero, especially in Africa. It kills 90 per cent of those infected with the virus. Death is certain if the patient starts bleeding. Bleeding, of course, is its “trademark”.

From a medical point, any one that contracts this disease should be isolated –to wait for death! It is sad! It kills faster than AIDS, and in an equally dramatic way. Because of its mode of transmission, you cannot bury dead patients in the usual way — patients, dead or alive, are absolutely avoided! Dead bodies are equally infectious.

It is almost incurable.

The problem is that there is no drug yet for treatment or vaccine for prevention. Four different viruses cause this disease. At least, we have some drugs for HIV/AIDS patients, to help them live longer and better. The treatment offered for Ebola Virus Disease is for the person to die better and more peacefully. The vaccines we have can only prevent monkeys and mice from the disease! Antivirals do not work.

It is highly contagious

HIV/AIDS requires blood transmission or intimate contact for transmission; this disease requires contact with body. Transmission is by coming in contact with body fluids from diarrhea, vomitting, and bleeding. Doctors and medical staff attending to the patients wear protective kits from head to toe, making them look like astronauts heading for the moon! HIV is highest among commercial sex workers and gays; the people with the highest risk of Ebola Viral Disease are medical workers, their families, and their friends. Hunters that encounter monkeys and bats, and marketers of bush-meats should be careful.

No definite way to protect yourself

There is ABC of HIV/AIDS prevention. There are ways of preventing malaria. But preventing Ebola Virus Disease is not specific or clear-cut. You are advised to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, avoid contact with infected people (and their secretions and blood), and avoid contact with objects contaminated by infected people. Prevention is by hygiene!

Family / Mother Of Baby Born Without Genital Duped Of N5m by webaplanet(m): 6:07am On Aug 05, 2014
A 38 year-old woman, Charity Atoe has called on the police to help her unravel the location of a woman whom she alleged eloped with funds donated for the surgery of her three years old son, Timothy, who was born without genitals.
Charity who gave the name of the woman as Blessing Asatu said the total money donated was about N5m.
She was at the premises of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to narrate her story.

Charity said doctors at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital demanded for N900,000 to perform a corrective surgery and that efforts to raise the money in Edo state failed which made her to go to Lagos State to seek for help.
It was on her way to Redeemed Christian Church of God that she claimed to have met Blessing who offered to help her by calling journalists who made her son’s plight public.

“My husband ran away after he has spent lots of money on this condition. He is a bricklayer and I used to sell. I have children for two husbands. Two girls for another man and two boys for this man that ran away. I have not seen my husband for the past eight months. I have been to several places and no help came. I have been looking for help for the past three years.

“After looking for help in Benin without any forthcoming. I decided to go to TB Joshua church. On my way, someboday said I should go to Redeemed Church. It was where I was to buy sachet water to drink that I met one woman by name Blessing Usatu.

“She promised to help me and within few minutes I saw pressmen asking me questions and the report was published the next day alongside my photographs. After two days, I started receiving calls from individuals across the world stating that they have paid money into an account provided alongside the story. I did not know that the account was in her name. She has a store at Ikeja opposite the Redeem church. We went to the hospital at Lagos and Dr. Bankole asked her to give me the money to go and do the operation in Benin but she refused. I used to sleep at Ijesha outside The Lord Chosen Church.

“Somebody brought N600,000 cash which I saw. I was given N100,000 and the woman said she would keep the rest. I later gave her N80,000 out of the N100,000. Whenever I am going for check-up, she would give me N2000. She said I should go and call my husband before she will give me the money. I went to the Zenith bank and the bank officials my picture was not in the account. I really need help. I do not know that the woman was out to dupe me. I have been calling her and her number is not connecting.”

Family / Landlady’s Children Cut Tenant’s Joy Stick by webaplanet(m): 6:03am On Jul 31, 2014
A 35-year-old man, Yinka Offehin, is battling for his life at a private hospital in Lagos State after his scrotum was cut by the children of his landlady.

The Edo State indigene, who resides on Popoola Street, off Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos, was said to have been attacked while sleeping in his room with his family members.

His wife, Bisi, who was with him when the incident happened, identified the assailants as Solomon and Damilola, the children of the landlady.

She said, “On Thursday morning, around 3am, while we were sleeping, we heard loud bangs on our door. We initially thought they were armed robbers because the house beside ours had recently been robbed.

“When they entered, we saw they were children of our landlady. They began destroying our electronics and other property.

“There were two of them. One held a knife in his hand. They took N800, 000. They descended on my husband and he also fought back. In that confusion, my husband shouted and we saw that one of the attackers had cut Yinka’s scrotum. I can’t say what they used to cut off my husband’s scrotum.”

She added that her husband, though in pain, was able to hold on to one of his attackers till dawn, while the other fled the scene.

Bisi said her husband could not be admitted at a general hospital because of the ongoing doctors’ strike, but was eventually taken to a private hospital in the area.

When our correspondent visited the victim at the hospital, he told PUNCH Metro the genesis of his problem was when he had a misunderstanding with his landlady and was asked to vacate his apartment.

“I was asked to leave the house immediately, but after the intervention of the traditional ruler of the community, I was asked to leave by the end of August.

“But that decision did not go down well with the children of my landlady and they continued to make trouble with me.

“I was already planning to leave their house and had even contacted an agent when they attacked me without any provocation. I want the government to fight for me,” he said.

A doctor in the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that his patient would need up to three months to recover.

He said, “We have stitched the area where the scrotum was torn. It may take up to three months before it will heal. He needs time to fully recover from the injury.”

A relative said the doctor told the family if the condition did not improve, a surgery may not be ruled out.

It was learnt that about N60, 000 had already been spent by the family.

The father of the suspects, a pastor, when contacted, declined comment.

He said, “I am sorry; I can’t speak with you on this matter. You know the matter is already with the police and those they accused of committing the offence are in the police cell. So, what do you want me to say? I was told they are taking the matter to court. Let’s leave everything to God.”

Our correspondent learnt that the case was reported at the Ikotun Police Division.

A source told our correspondent that a member of the suspects’ family had on the morning of the incident reported a case of armed attack on them by a tenant.

The wife of the victim, who met the relative at the station, reportedly expressed surprise, telling the officers the reverse was the case.

It was learnt that the relative was put behind the counter after the police saw the victim’s injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident.

She said, “It was around 3am, while the victim was sleeping in his room, that one Solomon Olowogbemi and Damilola Olayeye, the children of his landlady, came in and started fighting with him.

“In the process, they inflicted injury on him with an unknown object. The skin of his scrotum was partly cut off, thereby exposing one of his testicles. The two suspects have been arrested and detained and the victim taken to a hospital.”

Politics / General Babaginda:This BloodLetting must Stop by webaplanet(m): 6:23am On Jul 25, 2014
IBB: bloodletting must stop

“I have sat back in my quiet retirement home in Minna to ponder over what could be the motivation for these several attacks, but I am yet to find any explanation why Nigerians would be killing fellow Nigerians.

Former Military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida yesterday said the prevalent bloodletting by Boko Haram must stop.
Gen. Babangida, who made his position known in a statement which he personally signed, said the wanton killings and needless bloodletting had been retarding our growth.

The statement said: “The latest attack in Kaduna on Wednesday by yet unknown persons has once again thrown up new dimensions in the political life of our dear country. This and several other attacks have tended to portray our dear country as a terrorist nation that is grasping with insecurity. To state the least, this bloodletting must stop. This bloodletting has to stop.

“I have sat back in my quiet retirement home in Minna to ponder over what could be the motivation for these several attacks, but I am yet to find any explanation why Nigerians would be killing fellow Nigerians.

“For those of us who fought the civil war, our painful sense of nostalgia still remains deep, as much as our patriotic attitude towards this great country, Nigeria.

“These wanton killings and needless bloodletting have continued to retard our growth and democratic journey, forcing the system to improvise all manner of mechanisms to arrest this descent to anarchy.

“It is callous and inhuman for anyone to goad this country on the path of perfidy, a path that is laid with landmines and bombs. This is totally unacceptable.”

Gen. Babangida pleaded with Nigerians to rise above partisanship in addressing the insecurity facing the nation.

The statement added: “Even as I sympathise with my colleague, former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, for escaping the bomber’s scalpel, I also wish to condole with the families of those who lost their lives in this attack.

“It is frightening and calls for condemnation by all well meaning people of Nigeria. We all must rise above partisanship in our condemnation of this state of insecurity, as we all must be united in our clear-cut resolve to finding solutions to this hydra-headed situation we find ourselves.

“We must see this state of insecurity as a Nigerian problem and not one that is pigeon-holed in any particular region, religion or tribe. Nigerians, by virtue of their nationality, should be free to live anywhere in the country without molestation, harassment and intimidation.

“Let me also condole with Mr. President on this unfortunate incident and the recurring decimal of insecurity and crime against humanity that is fast polluting public morality. We all must join hands with Mr. President at this critical time of our national history and democratic journey to proffer solutions to this anti-development scenario that is fast enveloping us.

“The President and our governors need our prayers at various stages of their leadership to arrest this ugly trend.”
Gen. Babangida said the nation must continue to move on, in spite of the setbacks of the past few years.

He said: “Nigeria of our dream is one that provides opportunity for all, irrespective of our cultural and political differences; a nation that comprises several nation-states with abundant resources and opportunities for our flourishing population.

“We must, therefore, be resolute in our collective reasoning and determination to trudge on despite these obvious setbacks in order to safely paddle the ship of state to a safe harbor.

Autos / Customs, FRSC Collaborate To Checkmate Registration Of Smuggled Vehicles by webaplanet(m): 5:22am On Jul 11, 2014
Customs, FRSC collaborate to checkmate registration of smuggled vehicles

TheNigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced moves to collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to checkmate the registration of smuggled vehicles.

Disclosing this to newsmen yesterday, the Public Relation of the service Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, a Deputy Comptroller, said the programme has reached an advanced stage, adding that the aim was to eliminate the smuggling of vehicles into the country.

Adeniyi disclosed this at a training programme orgainsed for maritime journalists by the Apapa Customs Command said that it is partnering with the commission as part of the global network initiative with other stakeholders.

He explained that once a smuggled vehicle get to the commission’s office for registration, it will trigger off the commission’s alarm, an indication that the vehicle did not pass through Customs’ clearing process.

The system, according to Adeniyi, is that there is an inter-connectivity between the Customs service and Commission the with a view to reducing or eliminating the issue of smuggling particular vehicles.

He said, “An on-line platform is being developed to ensure that smuggled vehicles are not registered in the country.

“Once duty is paid on any vehicle, it will sail through the registration process but the system will trigger off itself if that vehicle does not pass through Customs clearing process.

“This is part of the Customs collaborative effort in bringing about orderliness in the system so as to grow the economy.”

Autos / FRSC To Impound Vehicles Without Genuine Customs Papers by webaplanet(m): 7:42am On Jul 10, 2014
Vehicle owners who approach the Federal Road Safety Corps for registration without genuine clearance documents from the Nigeria Customs Service will, henceforth, have such vehicles impounded.

President Goodluck Jonathan handed down the directive to the FRSC during the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

The Corps Marshal, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, attended the session to brief the FEC members on the country’s status on the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020).

He later joined the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, to brief State House correspondents after the meeting.

Chidoka said the directive from the President would eliminate the era of fraudulent Customs papers being tendered by motorists seeking to register their vehicles in the country.

He said, “Initially, our plan was that when we see you, we ask you to go back to the Customs. But with the feedback from Mr. President today, that is not enough. We need to hold that car and investigate how it entered into the country without going through the normal process.

“So we will modify the process to include the Customs in that process.”

He said his organisation would continue to work hard to make Nigerian roads among the 20 safest in the world by 2020 in terms of accidents.

Chidoka also assured Nigerians that the delay being witnessed in getting the new driver’s licence would soon become a thing of the past.

Music/Radio / The World And Fame Of The ‘don Jazzy’! by webaplanet(m): 6:59am On Jul 08, 2014
Don Jazzy, as he is fondly called by his fans and all, needs no introduction in the Nigerian music industry. He has been the unseen hand in the music of most emerging Nigerian acts. The Don indeed has seen it all; as a label owner, a musician, and a producer.

Michael Collins Ajereh was the name given to him by his parents. He eventually acquired the stage name Don Jazzy in his launch into music. He hails from Delta state, but was born in Umuahia in Abia state 31 years ago on November 26th, 1982.
His family after his birth relocated to Ajegunle in Lagos state. The Don was raised in Ajegunle city of Lagos state. At age 12, he developed love for the bass guitar. He graduated from Federal Government College Lagos and went further to study Business Management at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo state.

Don Jazzy moved to London in the United Kingdom in 2000 after his Uncle invited him to play the drums for a neighborhood Church. Today the Don is rated as the richest music producer/ act in Nigeria and the second richest music personality in Africa.

He is the CEO of Mavin Record label, a record producer, singer-songwriter and a musician. Don Jazzy has won so many awards to his label. He was also formally the CEO of the popular Nigerian record label, MO Hits Records with D’banj as the only artiste.
Mavins Record label

Don Jazzy is a brand without mincing words. According to reports from some artistes, Mavin Record label is arguable the best label in Nigeria. His label has given leverage to top musical icons like Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Prince, Wande Coak and many others who signed on. He was D’banj’s producer, business partner and friend until MO Hits Records dissolved and the duo officially parted ways.
Endorsements and Production credit

Don Jazzy has made so much money from endorsements, callertunes and foreign collaborations. He recently signed a multi-million naira deal with MTN. The endorsement from MTN was for N25m.
He also signed another contract worth millions of naira with Samsung, Africa; the deal was for a N100m. Don Jazzy was paid N50m for being the newest brand ambassador of Loya milk. His production credits for foreign collaborations include working with Snoop Doggy, Kanye West, Beyonce and Jay Z.

Music studio
According to report, Don Jazzy is set to unveil a new recording studio estimated at over N500m. He said in a statement that his studio is going to be a world class studio which is constructed by international sound engineers who have worked with acclaimed international producers.
Houses, club and cars

To say that Mavin Record Boss is having a swell time living his dream is an understatement. He recently got himself a befitting mansion which cost him more than N300m. According to the reports the mansion is only one of the many properties he had acquired in the choicest part of Lagos as he is in the business of investing on properties and loves driving cool expensive cars. He has a club known as POP which cost him a whooping sum of N50m to build, but has decided to shut it down because of unforseen circumstance.

Although he is perceived to be a calm person, this has not stopped his love for beautiful exotic cars. He was seen cruising in a Porsche which is valued at over N22m. His other car is a Bentley which cost him about N65m to purchase amongst others. He recently took a photograph of his Bentley and uploaded it with a tweet; he described it as “one of his most expensive cars”. Another report has it that he has another car which cost him about N150m to purchase.

Gifts
Don Jazzy has always proven that he has a heart of gold, if he is not giving people money or cars, he is busy employing people. Sometime ago, he was at the airport on his way to South Africa for MTV Base award. And there was this airport cart operator who was doing his work when the Don arrived at the airport. It was one of those days when he felt like doing something interesting and he had asked the cart operator to let him drive.

He and the cart operator who is a staff of Delta Airlines drove through the airport on the shuttle/ golf cart. He was asked by the management to stop the cart or the man would be fired. He eventually stopped it, unfortunately the man was fired. Don Jazzy ended up employing the man. It would also be recalled that Don Jazzy gave Tiwa Savage a car gift of about N16m as her wedding present. The car is a brand new Prado SUV. Don Jazzy was also one of the few that stood by popular musician known as OJB financially during his trying times.

Nigeria: Govt Hires U.S. Lobby Firm to Launder Image Over Handling of Chibok Abduction

The Nigerian government has come under local and international condemnation over its far-from-impressive handling of the Chibok abduction.

In order to whitewash its inept handling of the kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, the Goodluck Jonathan administration has awarded a N195 million ($1.2 million) contract to U.S. Public Relations and lobby firm, Levick, to help change "international and local media narrative" surrounding its efforts to rescue the girls, Washington DC based newspaper, The Hill, is reporting.

Boko Haram militants kidnapped the girls, who were writing their final examination, more than 70 days ago from their dormitory at the Government Secondary School, Chibok near Maiduguri .

In a video, Boko Haram leader, Abubarka Shekau, threatened to sell the girls into slavery. However the group later offered to swap the girls for Boko Haram fighters held by the government.

The Federal Government has come under severe criticism from local and international media for its lethargic handling of the abduction, prompting the ruling party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to accuse the opposition of sponsoring a media campaign to discredit the government.

On Wednesday, the U.S. government told Nigerians to hold the government accountable for the failure to rescue the girls more than two months after they were kidnapped.

Details contained in the contract document obtained by The Hill show that the firm will also be "assisting the government's efforts to mobilize international support in fighting Boko Haram as part of the greater war on terror".

The firm also promised to assist the government in effecting "real change" in the country.

"A more comprehensive approach using vehicles such as public diplomacy and engaging outside experts to enact real changes is how the advocacy industry is evolving," Phil Elwood, a Vice President at Levick, told The Hill. "A communications strategy alone is not enough to solve the complex and multifaceted problems facing some of the more controversial nations."

"For me, after talking to him, the priority for President Jonathan beyond any is finding and bringing home the girls," said Lanny Davis, an Executive Vice President at Levick.

"There's got to be a way to amplify what he's saying and doing to find these girls because over here in America, we're not hearing much about his effort," Mr. Davis added.

Levick will also be working with Jared Genser, a human rights attorney, who has worked for notable personalities such as South African Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutut and Burmese pro-democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi in the past to publicise "President Goodluck Jonathan Administration's past, present and future priority to foster transparency, democracy and the rule of law throughout Nigeria."

Mr. Genser told The Hill that he took the job following Mr Jonathan's commitment to tackle Boko Haram.

"In terms of advancing human rights, however, the real work has to be done working with governments that are well meaning but lack the capacity -- or as much capacity as they might like -- and want to do the right thing," he said.

"At the end of the day, the [Nigerian] president has said clearly to us that he wants results," he said.

"I would not sit here and pretend that we are singlehandedly going to rescue the girls, that's not our role," Genser said. "What we can do is, we can provide advice and support about how to do so in accordance with international human rights norms and standards," he added.

Politics / Bayelsa: Dickson’s Aides Defect To APC by webaplanet(m): 9:28am On Jan 06, 2014
At last, the defection train has hit President Goodluck Jonathan’s home state of Bayelsa with some aides of Governor Seriake Dickson dumping the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress.

Also, loyalists of former governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, have shifted allegiance to the APC in Bayelsa.

The APC in the state is chaired by former Security Adviser to Sylva, Chief Richard Kpodo, while former Youth Leader of PDP in the South-South, Mr. Godwin Sidi, is the Interim State Secretary of the APC.

Apart from Kpodo, Sidi and scores of Dickson’s special advisers and commissioners, other defectors include former Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government, Mr. Timipa Orunemigha, alias Tiway.

The APC in the state will be inaugurated in Yenagoa, the state capital, this week.

The defection to the APC has put paid to months of political manoeuvrings and horse-trading, which had characterised the PDP since the New PDP’s conundrum.

Kpodo and other supporters had allegedly dumped the PDP and embraced the then Baraje Kawu-led nPDP for what they described as “lack of internal democracy and culture of impunity”.

Confirming their defection, Sidi told The PUNCH that their decision to move out of the PDP was due to the failure of peace talks in the party.

He claimed that the APC boasted of over two million supporters in Bayelsa.

The interim secretary said, “All arrangements have been put in place for the APC and Kpodo, I and other supporters find it expedient to move over to the APC with our supporters.

“The decision to move to the APC was taken due to the fact that every peace talk within the PDP has failed and also we have found out that the PDP is in life support and it will die very soon.

“We do not want to witness such a tragedy in a political party we have tried over the years to build.

“The APC secretariat will be opened within this week and we are solidly on ground. Kpodo will serve as Interim Chairman and I will serve as Secretary until party congress takes place.”

He urged Nigerians to stand up against Jonathan’s third term oath in office.

He said anything beyond eight years in office was unconstitutional, stressing that the APC would reject it.

Crime / 5 Policemen Detained For Renting Rifle To Kidnappers by webaplanet(m): 8:40am On Jan 06, 2014
OWERRI — Five policemen, serving in Imo State police command, including the armourer of New Owerri police division, are now in detention over how one of the AK-47 rifles officially issued for guard duties, ended up in the hands of dare devil kidnappers operating in the state.

Confirming the develpoment to Vanguard in a telephone interview yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Musa Katsina, said while four of the five policemen were explaining their involvement in the sordid act, the armourer is being tried for negligent conduct.

Katsina said: “It is true that I ordered the arrest, detention and interrogation of four serving policemen of this command for allegedly renting one of the rifles assigned to them to dare devil kidnappers.”
According to the CP, all the police officers, including the armourer, arrested in connection with the sordid finding are now facing orderly room trial.

He said: “I have constituted a panel to try them. They have been given the opportunity to explain and anybody found to be involved in the crime would be made to face the full weight of the law.”

Giving a graphic account of how the police recovered the weapon from fleeing kidnappers, Katsina said the command’s Ambush Squad gave a hot chase to a gang of kidnappers and in the process, they abandoned the gun in their operational vehicle and ran away.
“When the vehicle was thoroughly searched, the AK-47 rifle belonging to the command was recovered. We traced the point of issue to New Owerri police division and that is how the armourer came into the picture,” the CP said.

Katsina said policemen are given weapons to protect the citizens and not to use it to terrorize the people they are supposed to protect.

“The four were officially assigned the weapons for guard duties. The other three policemen never reported to anybody that their colleague whose weapon was later recovered from kidnappers, was not reporting for duty” the CP said.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the four policemen were posted to the residence of a retired CP (names withheld), while Katsina has since reported the incident to the Inspector General of Police.

Family / Pre-marital Sex Immoral, No Religion Permits It by webaplanet(m): 7:58pm On Jan 05, 2014
Pre-marital sex is "immoral" and against the "tenets of every religion", a Delhi court has said while holding that every act of sexual intercourse between two adults on the promise of marriage does not become rape.

Additional sessions judge Virender Bhat also held that a woman, especially grown up, educated and office-going, who has sexual intercourse on the assurance of marriage does so "at her own peril".

"In my opinion, every act of sexual intercourse between two adults on the assurance of promise of marriage does not become rape, if the assurance or promise is not fulfilled later on by the boy," the judge said.

"When a grown up, educated and office-going woman subjects herself to sexual intercourse with a friend or colleague on the latter's promise that he would marry her, she does so at her own peril. She must be taken to understand the consequences of her act and must know that there is no guarantee that the boy would fulfil his promise.

"He may or may not do so. She must understand that she is engaging in an act which not only is immoral but also against the tenets of every religion. No religion in the world allows pre-marital sex," the court said, while acquitting an employee with a multinational company of the charges of rape.

The 29-year-old man, a resident of Punjab, was arrested by police after a month, when the woman, doing a secretarial and administrative job at a private company here, lodged a complaint of rape against him in May 2011.

In her complaint, the woman, who is an orphan, had alleged that the man, whom she had met through a chat website in July 2006, used to have physical relations with her on several occasions by promising to marry her.

Family / Baby Girl ‘married’ To 3-year-old Boy by webaplanet(m): 11:55am On Jan 03, 2014
Families of the two children say the arrangement was predicted by spirits.

Kamuli- Last Sunday, relatives and friends of two families gathered in Butamira Parish, Buyengo Sub-county in Jinja District to conduct a marriage ceremony.
The ceremony was not a usual one though; “the bride-to-be” was a six-month-old baby girl and “the groom-to-be” was a three-year-old boy.
Amidst ululations, the visibly ignorant children were given coffee beans and cowrie shells as a symbol of a covenant that binds the two for life. They were also given small pieces of millet bread mixed with sim sim to feed each other as a symbol of love and care.

The two children had been betrothed to each other. Betrothal is an arrangement of marriage of two people in the future.
According to the two children’s parents, the betrothal was pre-ordained and predicted by the spirits.

The boy’s father, who hails from Buyende District, spoke of how his son was born with two teeth and as he marked a year, the child predicted that his wife would be born in Jinja District with similar features as his and an engagement ceremony would have to be organised at birth.

The girl’s father also spoke of how his daughter, who was born with a pair of teeth, had equally foretold her husband-to-be.

However, Kamuli District police child protection officer Richard Kagoda dismissed the marriage, describing it as a mere visit by families to satisfy their psychological egos and not a marriage as the children cannot consent to it since they are still young.

Little awkward news. Seven-month Chinese boy suffers from a rare disease. He has since birth growing tumor that is very similar to a tail.

The boy named Xiao Wei was born with spina bifida. His mother, Chen Wei, from the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, said she asked doctors to remove the tumor as it continues to grow, but the surgeons refused to carry out such an operation. The position the doctors explained is that at the moment the operation is impractical, and not only will it have no effect, but also cause irreparable harm to the health of the child.

Pets / Family Dog Kills Owner Injures Wife by webaplanet(m): 10:10am On Dec 30, 2013
Couple tried to break up a dog fight.

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — The former mayor of this city of almost 40,000 was hospitalized and her husband died after the couple's pet dogs attacked them, according to the current mayor.

Former Mayor Diane Vick and her husband, Tom, tried to intervene after one of their larger dogs attacked one of their smaller dogs, but the dogs turned on them and attacked them, Mayor Jack Hakim said. They were flown to a hospital in Las Vegas.

Tom Vick and his wife tried to break up a fight Saturday evening between the family's boxer and cocker spaniel, police said. The boxer attacked both of them.

Tom Vick, 64, who taught social studies at Mohave High School, died of his injuries Sunday, Hakim said. Diane Vick "was pretty well beat up," but Hakim didn't believe her injuries were critical.

Hakim called the incident "pretty devastating."

"We've had dog bites before but never something like this," he said. "It's very sad for us in Bullhead City. She was former mayor and he was a prominent high school teacher at Mohave High School. ... We're just grateful that at least one of them was able to survive."

The dogs are being held at the Bullhead City Animal Control facility.

Family / China Formally Relaxes One-child Policy by webaplanet(m): 8:30am On Dec 28, 2013
Beijing: China's top legislative committee formally approved a loosening of the country's hugely controversial one-child policy on Saturday and abolished "re-education through labour" camps, state media reported.

The decisions were taken by the standing committee of the National People's Congress, China's rubber-stamp parliament, at the conclusion of a six-day meeting, according to Xinhua news agency.

The widening of existing exceptions to the one-child policy will allow couples where either parent has no siblings to have two children, reforming the strict family planning policy imposed more than three decades ago to prevent overpopulation in the world's most populous nation.

China argues its one-child limit kept population growth in check and supported the country's rapid development that has seen it soar from mass poverty to become the world's second-largest economy.

But enforcement of the policy has at times been excessive. The public was outraged last year when photos circulated online of a woman forced to abort her baby seven months into her pregnancy.

Now China faces looming demographic challenges, including a rapidly increasing elderly population, a shrinking labour force and male-female imbalances.

China's sex ratio has risen to 115 boys for every 100 girls, while the working population began to drop last year, Xinhua said earlier.

The birth rate has fallen to about 1.5 since the 1990s, well below the replacement rate, it added.

While the easing of the one-child policy - estimated to apply to around 10 million couples - has been welcomed, critics say that the state has retained the principle of deciding itself how many children people should have.

Provincial congresses and their standing committees will decide on implementing the new policy "based on evaluation of local demographic situation and in line with the law on population and family planning as well as this resolution," Xinhua said, citing the resolution document.

The one-child policy reforms are expected to come into force in the first quarter of 2014, according to a senior official from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, Xinhua reported last week.

Car Talk / Man Caught 'Driving Without A Steering Wheel' by webaplanet(m): 12:55pm On Sep 05, 2013
A South Australian man is facing charges after he was allegedly caught driving a car without a steering wheel — with just vice grips clamped to the part where the wheel should have been for control.

Police said they pulled over the white Holden in the Adelaide suburb of Gilles Plains after they spotted it driving dangerously with two blown tyres, ABC Online reports.

When officers peered in the window they saw the car allegedly had no steering wheel and the 38-year-old driver was using a pair of vice grips to steer.

When police ran a check on the vehicle they found it was unregistered, uninsured and subject to a defect notice.

It was also allegedly involved in a crash with another vehicle just moments before it was stopped.

The driver from the suburb of Northfield is facing charges of driving while disqualified and returning a positive drug test.

Politics / Some Policemen Are Armed Robbers – AIG by webaplanet(m): 8:34am On Aug 15, 2013
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 6 Command, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, has alleged that many Nigerian policemen are armed robbers and get killed daily because of their involvement in various crimes.

Johnson stated this during his visit to Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo on Tuesday

He said, “If you investigate our men, you will discover some are armed robbers. We are not contented with what they have; we go to the road to extort money from people, engage in illegal business, and liaise with armed robbers.”

The AIG warned that any policemen caught in anti-social acts would be dismissed.

According to him, “No criminal has lived in his criminality and never been caught. If you want to live in palava, you will die in palava.”

He accused police officers of selling arms and ammunition to criminals, aiding and abetting crime, turning cases upside down, conniving with suspects, and engaging in conspiracy.

He further revealed that corruption was embedded in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nigeria Police Force, even as he accused police officers of giving information to hoodlums leading to the criminals killing their colleagues.

Crime / My Erection Wouldn't Deflate For 240 Days by webaplanet(m): 1:06pm On Jul 06, 2013

AN imperfect penile implant left a truck driver with an erection that wouldn't deflate … for eight months.

Daniel Metzgar's delicate predicament has led to a malpractice lawsuit being heard in a Delaware court.

Wherever the 44-year-old New Jersey truck driver went, his condition got in the way, said Metzgar's attorney, Michael C. Heyden. Retrieving the morning newspaper became a problem. So was riding his motorcycle. Family events presented embarrassing situations because, as Heyden put it: "Dan is stuck in this position."

According to the court papers and testimony at New Castle County Superior Court. the initial procedure was done in 2009 by a Wilmington urologist, Dr. Thomas J. Desperito, Delaware Online reported. The surgery involved placing an inflatable penile implant inside the shaft of the penis, a fluid reservoir under the abdominal wall and a pump inside the scrotum.

Metzgar said he had hoped the prosthesis would help his love life with his wife, Donna, where other solutions had failed. Unfortunately, it did just the opposite, making him feel like less of a man.

"I could hardly dance, with an erection poking my partner," Metzgar told jurors Monday when he took the witness stand. The procedure caused him to shink from much of life, and he took up wearing long baggy sweatpants and a long shirt to hide his situation.

After the surgery, he claimed his scrotum grew to the size of a volleyball. Attorneys for the urologist claim that Metzgar, at that point — four months after the surgery — should have realized something was wrong.

Desperito's attorney, Colleen D. Shields, insisted that the urologist told Metzgar the prosthesis had to be removed four months after the surgery when the patient complained of an infection and that the erection wasn't going down. Metzgar, according to Shields, didn't do anything for months following the visit in late April 2010.

The prosthesis was eventually removed by another doctor in August 2010 and replaced, but Metzgar said that the scar tissue from the first surgery left him about 50 percent smaller and that he does not experience the same level of sensation.

Metzgar and his wife are seeking unspecified damages from Desperito and his medical group.

Crime / Human Parts:dealers Are Sourcing For Placentas by webaplanet(m): 9:59am On Jul 06, 2013
PLACENTA BUYERS ON THE PROWL

•Buy one for N1.5m

“Madam, I can help you raise money to pay your hospital bill, if you can give me your placenta.” This was the statement of a middle aged man identified as Segun who specialises in buying and selling of placenta.

It was part of a conversation between Segun and a woman, Mrs. Chidera Okereke who was recently delivered of a bouncing baby boy in a hospital located in Mafoluku area of Lagos State.

Investigations by Saturday Sun reveal that the trend which has been going on as secret deals between sellers and buyers is however assumed an alarming dimensionproportion with the audacity with which placenta collectors now approach pregnant women to sell their babies placenta upon delivery. Placenta is an organ which links the foetus to the mother in mammals for transfer of oxygen and nutrients to the foetus and waste products to the mother. Mrs. Okereke is one of those who has had an encounter with the evil merchants.

She told Saturday Sun that one of the collectors of the human part, Segun approached her with an offer to help her settle her hospital bill in exchange of her baby’s placenta. Narrating her experience, she said: “I was outside waiting for my husband who had gone to source for money to settle my bill, when a man who later introduced himself as Segun accosted me. He claimed that one of the nurses directed him to come and meet me that I was in need of money to settle my hospital bill.

It was then that he told me that he is a placenta collector and that he would pay as much as N500, 000. “I thought he was joking till he brought out his cheque book, it was at that point that I started shouting. He ran away before people started gathering around. He claimed that he is a regular visitor in the hospital and used to deal with nurses but in recent times, the families demand their placenta after delivery.”

Also narrating her own encounter with one of the placenta collectors on the prowl, a nurse, Patricia (surname withheld) who works in a hospital at Mafoluku area of Oshodi, claimed that she was actually offered N2.5million to supply placenta to a certain landlord who lives close to the hospital. She said: “He is popularly known as Baba Saheed and owns a house few blocks after the hospital. One day, he called me and asked me if he can buy placenta from the hospital.

He promised to pay N1.5million for each baby’s placenta; I was shocked because that was a lot of money. I told him that I was not interested and he increased it to N2.5million and I still refused. To convince me, he said that there were so many places he could get supply but decided to try me since so many women were giving birth in the hospital.

“On a second thought, I drew the attention of the doctor who invited him over. He threatened to arrest him but later relented when Baba Saheed prostrated and started begging for mercy. He claimed that he got the contract from a big company. Since then it is a matter of policy that every pregnant woman must go home with her baby’s placenta after delivery.

Although both cases point to a possible act of illegality, findings show that placenta is believed by some communities to have power over the lives of the baby or its parents. Many species of mammals consume their placentas. Human and animal placentas are also widely believed to be used as a source of extracts used as ingredients in various consumer products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, hair care products, health tonics, and food products other than ritual consumption by the baby’s mother or family.

In China and Hongkong, the placenta is eaten, a practice known as placentophagy. It was also learnt that a company in Japan makes a drink called “Placenta Drink” which contains placenta. The company claims that “they use the placenta as raw material”, adding that the drink makes the body’s metabolism active. Medical practitioners who spoke with Saturday Sun said that due to the fear of those on the loose scouting for the human parts they now insist that mothers should go home with their placenta after delivery. Dr Jide Adeleke recalled that it took the grace of God for him to survive a particular scandal that nearly destroyed his hospital.

“I had a situation where one of the mothers after two days, came back to demand her placenta. She claimed that her mother in-law asked her to collect it back from us. Her argument was that it has been sold out to someone else. Our saving grace was that the spot where it was buried was still there and the placenta was exhumed. This is why in the labour ward it is boldly written, ‘remember to take your placenta.’ Another Doctor, Steve Maduekwe claimed that they bury them at the request of the family.

“We normally advise our patients to go home with their placenta. It is a sacred thing and property of the woman who could either bury it or dry it up for storage. In others some would ask you to dispose of it. It is unfortunate and it is also true that it is in demand. I was once contacted by an individual who wants to use them to produce cosmetics.

He offered good money and I advised him to go and meet the women.” Mrs. Onolaja, who owns a maternity home in Orile, claimed that she had been confronted severally to supply placenta and paid huge sum of money. Onoloja who spoke to Saturday Sun on phone said, “I am a Christian that is why I will never be party to that act. I was once confronted by a man who claims to be a representative of a cosmetic company in Lagos.

He claimed that he wanted those placentas to produce hair cream. I refused despite the amount in question. I always insist that my patients should go with their placenta. This is so because I cannot vouch for my staff, they are the ones who will dispose of it. Their offer is always much and could be tempting.”

Another midwife who also owns a maternity home in Agege said that it is not a new thing but that most of the collectors approach them with the excuse that it is used to produce cosmetics. “I have referred several of them to the nursing mothers. They own the placenta and have the right to dispose of it as they wish. It is humanly possible that they use it for ritual.

That is why it is important that every mother should demand her placenta after birth. In my village each placenta is buried and a tree would be planted on it in remembrance of that birth.” Also a laboratory scientist, Professor Sam Sokunbi argued that those collectors could be using them medically as it is in popular demand. He said “every production company believes in result and considering the benefits that could be accrued in the use of placenta, anything can be offered to get the product especially from a human being.

We cannot pretend that there are no evil men in the world but the truth remains that there is demand for placenta in Nigeria among the production companies. All they need to do is to enlighten Nigerians so that they can willingly offer their placenta for a certain price. We live in a world which believes so much in spirituality.”
