concurrency is not that easy in java either although a new higher level of concurrent abstraction was added to java 5 it is still bloody difficult in non trivial apps.

Well. I am working on an enterprise project that involves intelligent use of concurrency. I haven't been struggling that much as I would if I was working with python. I don't think concurrency in Java is bloody difficult though.

Yeah. Concurrency is hard. However, Java makes it easier for me. I hate pythons concurrency capabilities. Stupid GIL.

Programming today has moved away from just writing syntax. The cartoon in this thread is true for many of those who are self taught as all they know is about writing syntax. They have no clue that something like Formal Methods in Software Engineering do exist, this is required for writing mission critical software for rockets, aroplanes, life support machines and so on. Though I will not discourage anyone from learning programming on their own but they should be aware that programming today is more than just writing syntax.

What a st.upi.d post. Na your daddy they write syntax. st.upi.d man.

I totally agree with this article. Nobody can teach you how to program. You can only be introduced to the tools then its up to you to bring that idea to life.

Nawa o. This is funny. Why all the beefs. Even if alexa sucks at traffic analysis, the fact still remains that his site is growing. When he gets to number one position, he could move to Google Analytics and begin to conquer it. Besides, Alexa talk say na Vanguard and Nairaland get highest traffic for Naija. So if he decides to use alexa, its not your business. Jealousy no go kill una.

DHTML well done.

Attempt what you know nothing about? You  should have atleast read her last post before coming up with this. .

Then go ahead and write the thing for her. If she did not need it, the lecturer would not have made it mandatory that she does it. Point still remains, responsible programmers would not help her until she shows some commitment.
Programming / Re: Female Programmer Here: Please Help (c Language) by worldbest(m): 9:52am On Dec 10, 2011
In other discussion boards, you would neva get help from the members except you had attempted to do the assignment yourself. Go and read the basics of the language, attempt to solve the problem and if you get errors, post them and you would get help.
Business / Re: How Google Is Killing Nigerian Online Businesses by worldbest(m): 12:27pm On Dec 09, 2011
I don't see anything wrong with what google is doing. They are not limited to search and advertising. Nigeria has great potentials for any web company and I would love to see more serious companies come in as far as our people are unable to create serious world class companies. When It comes to business opportunities, there is no such thing has morals (ask Mark Zuckerberg). Moreso, why would google buy any Nigerian company that has less attractive traffic statistics when they can do better in a short time.

My people, build good web applications. Target google's weakness or co-exist with them. They may at one point buy your company just to put it out of its misery. Stop wining, you cannot beat Google inc.

SUCCEED!:

@worldbest, thanks so much for your genuine advice, I appreciate it. The main reason I chose .Net is because I want to target enterprises like banks, insurance companies, pension companies etc and from my study, most of them use Microsoft products so I want develop apps that can seamlessly integrate with their existing platforms.

You are welcome bro. Since enterprises are your target then I would have to agree that .Net and Java are what you need.
Programming / Re: I Have Decided To Become A Programmer/app Developer And I Need Some Guide by worldbest(m): 6:26pm On Nov 27, 2011
A programming career is wonderful, its what I would recommend to anyone who is serious because at the end of the day it pays big time. So my friend, you have made a good choice.

For your questions,

1. I do not see anything wrong in your approach. I see you have been reading a lot of programming resources and trying to catch up. However, you need to focus on the language(s) that is suitable for the field you are interested in.

2. First of all you need to learn for while before talking about clients. Atleast learn the basics. You need to get money out of your mind until you are certain that you have the skills to satisfy a client. I do not know much about getting clients, maybe guys like dhtml, dualcore etc can help.

3. Yep, you can get clients from home. A lot of guys on NL work from home.

4. To be honest I do not know. But, I suggest you dump those languages and go with the one used by a lot of people - PHP and MySQL. It has massive support - you can get help when you don't know what to do.

5. A social Network? Good but hope its not your first project o. PHP and MySQL will do the work. Facebook was built with PHP at the begining. Building a SN is a tasking but exciting job, but if you rush it or think about all the cash you would make, you may end up not completing it.

I hope the above helps. I wish you all the best in this hammering venture. If you are determined, you will get to you destination.

@ PC Guru

I had been too busy to check out the specification you earlier sent. I did that now and i must say its brilliant. Everything i had in mind, you had in mind too. You really know what i am doing. Everything from the Apps lifecycle, event handling etc is either in the works or have been implemented. For the window events, apps will get window resize, resizing, close, move events. Thank you bro, you are brilliant.

is the require path correct on the file system , cuz i think dojo uses Require or AMD but if the path is wrong it would no doubt return undefined, also great work trying to use jQuery back again after swearing i will never touch it. besides all the best men. not to disturb u or your concentration wanted to share some nice stuff, "Pub/Sub" where each module interact with a channel rather than dom stuff, since u love architecture and design pattern its something u might find useful,it'd help you keep stuff de-coupled. take care bro. once again all the best

All paths are correct. I believe the problem is from the browser. All i need do is make a it better. Its a good thing you are going back to jQuery, i probably wouldn't start this if jQuery didn't exist. Please send the stuff, i don't mind looking at other things (they may fit well in other areas). Thank you bro. smiley
Programming / Re: Sage OS (HTML5) : The Development (with download link) by worldbest(m): 9:39pm On Nov 12, 2011
Ok, Today, i had a setback. The OS "booting" process was getting unpredictable. It would show up the log in page (as expected) and sometimes it wouldn't. This behavior also applies to the home screen.

I traced this to be a fault in the OS architecture. The files are not loading when they are supposed to even though i am using 'require.js'. An so, calling core library methods return undefined. So right now, i am rebuilding the OS core sad . The good thing about this is that, the new architecture is more structured and elegant cool. I am pretty sure this would improve performance.

The architecture allows for easy creation of OS libraries, Third Party libraries, Native Applications and Third-Party applications without doing unnecessary hacks/tweeks. Its similar to jQuery plugin creation process.

Hello, its been a while. I was actually ill for a week. But i am back now. Today, i went back and fixed the Uploader Manager again. It was crashing the OS when files above 30MB are dragged into the OS. What i did was implement a Producer - Consumer method where by one thread fetches chunks from the file and another thread writes them. The size of the chunk and amount of bytes in memory (Chunk Bucket) can be changed by the user. So if a user feels that 15KB per second is too slow, they can change it.

I see the day when your OS will be ready, fast approaching!

Was looking for your thread and saw it on page 2 and I said "HELL NO!" Must get it back to frontpage! Wonder why innovative threads like this one can't be stuck to the front page, instead we have "competitions" on every home page and thread existing on this forum.

Enjoy your soup down your throat-miles better than having grease on your elbow! wink

Ok, i had to do a re-write of the Upload manager. Turns out that it crashes the OS when large files are uploaded. The new script, uploads files in chunks and is isolated from the OS process (it works in a seperate thread). I am really paying more attention to resource usage.

I would ave suggested you use a flash plugin there. I am not sure, but there might some existing flash stuffs for that.

Nice suggestion. But HTML5 file handling is great. My plan is to make sure that everything is done with HTML5. Right now, you can drag any file from your desktop/file explorer unto the OS Home Screen to have them saved in the os file system. I am currently writing the upload dialog for progress monitoring.

OK, its been a while. I had to re-code some areas. At the moment, i am working on the os file upload manager. It allows the dragging of files into the OS.

RJones:

A while back I'd been thinking of making a game along these lines. Actually had a title for it "Escape from Bakassi". It was going to be a platformer on Unity3D that'd pay homage in a way to Contra.

A little background about me. I work in the US for a well known Fortune 500 company. I've gotten a fair amount of programming and project management experience on several projects.

I've been thinking about giving some of my knowledge back by mentoring a few serious minded folks to start a proper Nigerian game development firm in 2012.

While I don't think it would be reasonable to promise immediate success, I did want to consider a 2 year focused investment in this area as I considered this enough time to do something substantial.

It seems on this thread there are quite a few people who are passionate about this. So perhaps there's a chance to get this started for real.

PM me your cell phone number if you're interested and I'll make an international call so we can chat a bit.

------

Here is my own idea of a storyline:

The government of Nigeria is having problems with groups of militants who have taken it upon themselves to terrorise the oil rich Niger-Delta. They engage in vandalism, extortion, Robbery and kidnapping.

An american oil expatriate is kidnapped. Pressure begins to mount on the government from the U.S to rescue the man. They know going all out with the Nigerian Military will endanger the captives life.

They call on the Nigerian Secret Agency(NSA) who then appoints Agent Badmus Haruna aka Baba, their most trusted and experienced agent. His mission is to find and rescue the man.
------
Agent Baba will be our actor. He is to go from one militant base to another. Because we want this short and less complex, we may just draw out 3 militant bases located maybe in a forest, building and around moutains etc. As he goes, he picks up notes/clues telling him important details. From this we will again enough knowledge to begin a RTS/FPS Game engine.

So friends, what do you think? Lets read more storylines. Its getting interest already.

Nice storyline, i proposed a similar idea but someone said it was too sensitive. If you have got the funds to hire graphics artists, i think that may just fuel up my game dev passion. I am a programmer.

Thanks dhtml, I'm currently working on adding preference and themes to allow the changing of backgrounds and icon sizing. Other key features im woking on that im willing to sharing is multiplayer social interaction using node.js. When im done people who use both our operating systems can communitcate and interact with each other in an game environment similar to this, http://labs.dinahmoe.com/plink/ Anyway you(worldbest) can share your design for handling preferences and background changing. If you dont feel comfortable posting it here still email me. Im currently using xhtml to allow for js to edit the live setting of the home page, I was wondering what way were you attempting to handle that preferences and settings changes and if so can you send me something i can look over to help out.

Background changing is quite simple, all you need to is fade out the image in your home screen, change it, then fade in. As for the preference, i am still working on it, i still change stuffs so i cannot tell you exactly how i am handling it. But, the idea is to have a central place where application/OS settings can be altered. You dig?
