Syria's Bashar al-Assad calls on foreign countries to end support for rebels

Opposition denounces president's peace plan as 'empty rhetoric' as Assad pledges to stay and continue fighting 'terrorist' violence

Ian Black, Middle East editor

guardian.co.uk, Sunday 6 January 2013 12.48 GMT

Bashar al-Assad has pledged to continue fighting "terrorist" violence and urged foreign countries to end support for his enemies while also offering a national dialogue and a constitutional referendum to end Syria's bloody crisis.

The Syrian president used an hour-long speech in Damascus on Sunday to propose what he called a comprehensive plan that included an "expanded government". But there was no sign he was prepared to step down as the first stage of a political transition – a demand of all opposition groups. "I will go one day, but the country remains," he said.

The Syrian leader referred repeatedly to plots against his country and the role of al-Qaida, long-portrayed as the leading element in what began as a popular uprising in March 2011. Syria was not facing a revolution but a "gang of criminals", he said.

"We are now in a state of war in every sense of the word," the president told supporters. "This war targets Syria using a handful of Syrians and many foreigners. Thus, this is a war to defend the nation."

It was hard to see how his latest speech offered even a glimmer of hope for a way out of the bloody impasse between the regime and rebels in a conflict that the UN said last week had claimed 60,000 lives over 21 months.

The opposition Syrian National Coalition said the closely watched address marked an end to the diplomatic effort being led by the UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi. "It was a waste of time. He said nothing constructive," a spokesman, Louay Safi, told al-Jazeera TV. "It was empty rhetoric." Walid al-Bunni, a veteran activist, said: "The genuine opposition inside and outside Syria won't accept the initiative."

Assad's speech was "beyond hypocritical", Britain's foreign secretary, William Hague, commented on Twitter. "Deaths, violence and oppression engulfing Syria are his own making, empty promises of reform fool no one."

Assad's last public comments were in November, when he told Russian TV he would "live and die in Syria". His last speech was in June 2012.

Sunday's speech from the stage of the Damascus opera house in the heart of the capital was punctuated by thunderous applause and loyalist chants from what was certainly a carefully selected audience. The city was described as being under a security lockdown before the event.

Reconciliation could take place only with those "who have not betrayed Syria", Assad declared, repeating that there was no partner for peace. There could not be simply a political solution, he insisted, but there had to be an end to violence and terror. There was loud cheering when he praised the bravery of the armed forces.

Assad said a national dialogue would draw up a new charter. This would be put to a national referendum that would be followed in turn by parliamentary elections and a general amnesty.

Opposition comment on social media was predictably scathing. The speech prompted one anti-Assad figure to tweet: "There is a saying in Arabic that goes along the lines of: 'He killed the man then walked in his funeral.'"

Assad also thanked Russia, China and Iran for supporting Syria in the face of hostility from the US, Britain and France.

LWKMD. Zhul fiqar are you serious? Are you seriously using the Bible to justify Shia beliefs? grin
Which religion are you following again, Christianity or Islam?
My goodness. I laughed so hard at your post my chest is hurting grin grin grin
Anyway say hello to your brother LagosShia for me. I heard that both of you are using the same computer.

are you serious or just an hypocrite?

how many times do we quote the bible on the most fundamental beliefs in Islam when talking to christians? i assume the OP is a christian, and therefore what he is criticizing is also found/promoted in his bible-regardless of the fact that as already explained the majority of Shia do not carry out the symbolic practices of mourning under discussion.

LagosShia is fine and more relaxed away from nairaland, and he said i should send his regards to you.

World’s Shias mark Arbaeen in Karbala

Shia Muslims from around the world gather in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to commemorate the religious rituals of Arbaeen on January 3, 2012.

Thu Jan 3, 2013 5:43AM GMT

Millions of Shia Muslims from across the globe have come together in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to mark the Arbaeen ritual, which marks the 40th day following the seventh-century martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (PBUH), Press TV reports.

Dressed in black, the pilgrims gathered on Thursday in Karbala to mourn the tragedy, in which Imam Hussein (PBUH) along with 72 of his companions were martyred, reported Press TV correspondent Wisam AlBayati from the holy city.

As Shias were flooding Karbala, a car comb struck a mourning procession in the Iraqi town of Musayyib, 60 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad, killing 17 people.

Pilgrims condemned the deadly attack, but they noted that it would not change their mind about attending Arbaeen ritual.

“These attacks will not terrify the pilgrims. Imam Hussein sacrificed his life for the sake of people, and his followers are ready to sacrifice their lives to show their loyalty to him,” Ali al-Husseini, a pilgrim, told Press TV.

Such ceremonies have often been targeted by terrorist attacks over the past years.

The Iraqi police have deployed 35,000 troops to ensure security during the ritual. A few days ago, Iraq announced that it had arrested a number of al-Qaeda leaders across the country.

The number of Shias gathering in Karbala is constantly rising as the third Shia imam gains more recognition.

“This is a clear evidence to show that the cause of Imam Hussein continues to be supported by the Shia population,” said Hassan al-Mssawi, a pilgrim.

Car bomb kills Shia pilgrims south of Baghdad Iraq

A car bomb has killed at least 20 Shia Muslim pilgrims and injured others in the Iraqi town of Musayyib, south of the capital Baghdad, officials say.

The device exploded in a car park at 17:00 (14:00 GMT) as pilgrims returned from the holy city of Karbala.

An eyewitness spoke of having seen dozens of bodies and cars on fire after the explosion.

Shia pilgrims, who have been frequently targeted in Iraq, have been observing the festival of Arbaeen.

The bomb went off close to a bus stop where coaches that carry pilgrims from Karbala to other Iraqi cities drop and collect them, police told BBC News.

Bombs killed seven people in Musayyib on Monday.

Iraq's Shia-led government has been accused by critics of seeking to marginalise political representatives of the Sunni minority, which dominated the country under the late Saddam Hussein.

There were no immediate reports on Thursday of any group saying it had carried out the bombing. Past attacks on Shia pilgrims have been blamed on Sunni militants.

'Dozens of bodies'

A police official who spoke to the Associated Press news agency said children were among the dead in Musayyib, 60km (40 miles) south of Baghdad .

Ali Sabbar, a pilgrim who witnessed the explosion, told Reuters news agency: "I was getting a sandwich when a very strong explosion rocked the place and the blast threw me away.

"When I regained my senses and stood up, I saw dozens of bodies. Many cars were set on fire."

The news agency quoted police and medics as saying a suicide attacker had set off the device but other reports spoke only of a car bomb.

Security forces traditionally tighten security during Shia pilgrimages in Iraq but accept they cannot stop every attack, correspondents say.

Millions of pilgrims have visited Karbala to mark an anniversary associated with a revered Shia figure, Imam Hussein.

According to provincial governor Amal al-Din al-Har, quoted by AFP, these included around 750,000 pilgrims from 30 different countries.

16 Million Reach Karbala Despite Martyrdoms of Dozens

Millions of Muslims are flooding to the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to commemorate the religious ceremony of (Chelum) Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH).

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Millions of Muslims are flooding to the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to commemorate the religious ceremony of (Chelum) Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH).

Meanwhile , the deputy head of Karbala provincial council Nasim Jassem al-Khatabi expected that "over 16 million pilgrims are expected to attend the mourning ceremonies in Holy city for Arbaeen."

He further noted that this year Karbala will see the largest number of pilgrims visiting the city during Arbaeen ever.

Moreover, the Iraqi official highlighted that "the holy city is prepared to host the pilgrims and its hotels have been prepared for serving the guests."

"It is expected that 650000 of the pilgrims will be from other countries, especially Arab and Muslim states, he stated, and pointed out that "some of the pilgrims began travelling to the holy city since three weeks ago."

This comes as Iraqi authorities have heightened security measures as millions of Shia pilgrims from all over the world are gradually arriving in the holy city, 80 kilometers south of Baghdad.

Scores of people have been martyred in recent weeks across Iraq in attacks targeting pilgrims as they embark on the traditional walk to Karbala for Arbaeen commemorations.

On Monday, at least 23 people were martyred and 83 injured in a series of shootings and bombings in the north, center, and south of the country. Much of the violence targeted the pilgrims.

Last year, the Iraqi defense and interior ministries deployed 35,000 security forces to secure roads for the pilgrims.

Nigeria president compares unrest in nation to Syrian civil war and wonders about 'end times'

Published December 31, 2012

Associated Press

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria's president has compared the violence by an Islamist extremist sect in his West African nation to the ongoing civil war in Syria.

President Goodluck Jonathan made the comments Sunday before a church in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Jonathan said the sect known as Boko Haram "is taking over Abuja (and wants) for me and those working in government to run and hide somewhere else."

Jonathan also told worshippers at the church that the violence around the world made him wonder if this is a "way of telling us that the end times are so close."

According to an Associated Press count, Boko Haram has killed more than 780 people this year alone in Nigeria. The killings continue despite soldiers and police flooding the nation's north.

Iran launches major petrochemical plant

Tue Jan 1, 2013 8:27AM GMT

Iran has launched a petrochemical plant with the annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of heavy polyethylene in the western province of Kermanshah.

Kermanshah Polymer Petrochemical Plant was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi on Tuesday.

The project will create jobs for about 1,500 people and is expected to sell some USD 429 million worth of petrochemical products per year.

On Saturday, Iran launched two other petrochemical projects, namely Kavian Petrochemical Complex and the West Ethylene Pipeline in Assaluyeh, both of which are located in the onshore installations of the South Pars Gas Field.

Kavian Petrochemical Complex is the main source of ethylene for the West Ethylene Pipeline with an annual petrochemical production capacity of 2.18 million tons.

Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical products over the past few years, and its National Petrochemical Company has become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.

The Islamic Republic exported a total of 18.2 million tons of petrochemical and polymer products, worth about USD 14.2 billion, to more than 60 countries in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended March 19, 2012).

Iran successfully test-fires Qader, Nour missiles in drill

Tue Jan 1, 2013 8:23AM GMT

Qader coast-to-sea missile has been designed and produced by domestic industries.

Iranian naval forces have successfully test fired Qader (Capable) coast-to-sea and Nour (Light) surface-to-surface missiles on the fifth day of the Velayat 91 military maneuvers, Press TV reports.

Spokesman for the Velayat 91 naval drill Rear Admiral Amir Rastegari told Press TV on Tuesday that Qader cruise missile had successfully and precisely hit and destroyed its mock enemy target during the exercises.

“Qader coast-to-sea missile has been designed and produced by domestic industries,” the Iranian commander added.

Referring to the indigenous long-range Nour missile, Rastegari said, “Nour surface-to-surface missile is launched from surface units and is used to destroy surface targets.”

“Nour missile had previously passed all its tests with success and the new version is an optimized version of this missile,” Rastegari added.

Iran’s Navy launched the six-day naval maneuvers on December 28 in order to display the country’s capabilities in defending its maritime borders.

The specialized maritime maneuver covers an area from “east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Sea of Oman and north of the Indian Ocean as far as the 18th parallel north,” according to Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.

On the fourth day of the major military exercises, Iranian Navy forces successfully test-fired the latest version of the indigenous surface-to-air missile Ra’d (Thunder) and launched its indigenous short-range cruise missile Nasr (Victory).

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defensive capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Hard-line Saudi Wahabi cleric Sheikh Mohammed al-Arifi

Mon Dec 31, 2012 6:22AM GMT

A hard-line Wahhabi cleric in Saudi Arabia has recently issued a special religious decree that permits the militants in Syria to engage in short-term marriages with Syrian women.

Sheikh Mohammed al-Arifi said that the marriages between the foreign-backed militants and Syrian women will satisfy the militants’ sexual desires and boost their determination in killing Syrians.

He added that the marriages, dubbed by him as “intercourse marriages,” can be with Syrian females as young as 14 years old.

He also promised “paradise” for those who marry the militants.

Arifi has issued similar decrees in the past in support of the violence in Syria.

He has also been organizing a fundraiser for the militant groups fighting Syrian government forces.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country as there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Hard-line Saudi Wahabi cleric Sheikh Mohammed al-Arifi

Iraq arrests 66 al-Qaeda terrorists ahead of Arbaeen

Iraqi security sources have arrested 66 members of the al-Qaeda-inspired Islamic State of Iraq network as they were planning attacks against Shia Muslims marking Arbaeen, the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH).

On Sunday, Staff Lieutenant General Othman al-Ghanimi, head of Al-Furat al-Awsat operations command said that the terrorists were rounded up during sweep operations in the central province of Karbala, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

He added that Iraqi police had also seized various kinds of weapons and munitions in the operations.

Ghanimi further noted that 35,000 security soldiers have been deployed to Karbala city, located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Baghdad to provide security for people taking part in Arbaeen ceremonies for Prophet Muhammad's grandson, scheduled for January 3.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is a shadowy group that was once allegedly led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Zarqawi was reportedly killed in June 2006.

According to US government and military officials, the group was then led by Ayyub al-Masri, who was killed along with Abu Omar al-Baghdadi -- another leader of the group -- in a joint Iraqi-US operation in Salahuddin Province in April 2010.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been blamed for some of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the country since the US-led invasion in March 2003.

Blast in southwest Pakistan kills Shia pilgrims

At least 19 Shia Muslim pilgrims have been killed by a bomb attack on a bus convoy in southwest Pakistan, local officials say.

More than 20 people have been injured in the incident in the Mastung district of Baluchistan province.

Pakistan has experienced worsening sectarian violence in recent years. Last month 23 Shia Muslims were killed by a bomb in the city of Rawalpindi.

No group has yet said it carried out Sunday's bombing.

Initial reports said it had been detonated by remote control but a government official said it had been a suicide attack.

Officials said that some of those injured were in a critical condition and that the death toll may rise.

The bus convoy had reportedly been on their way to neighbouring Iran, a Shia-majority country and popular pilgrimage destination.
