Blessing: Raped, infected with HIV, rescued by church

Sixteen-year-old Blessing Dennis left her village in Oruk Anam Council of Akwa Ibom State for Port Harcourt in search of greener pastures. She had big dreams and was hopeful life would be better. She must have thought that money grew on trees and a decent accommodation must be easy to come by even in a big city like Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Unfortunately, things were not as she had anticipated and her hope was shattered like a pack of cards when confronted with the realities, as she was forced to seek shelter under the bridge, where she was mercilessly gang-raped.

The incident not only got her pregnant, but she also was infected with HIV, a status she must live with for the rest of her life.

For months, Blessing roamed the streets of Port Harcourt with her protruding belly, begging for food and doing odd jobs.

Finally, she located Omega Power Ministry, and the General Overseer of the church, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, upon hearing her pitiful story, directed the Free OPM Specialist Hospital to register her for antenatal and subsequently, took her to his house, where she lived before she was recently delivered of a baby girl through Caesarian Section (CS), because of her HIV status, and till date.

She recounted her experience and ordeal before help came her way: “I was living in my village with my grandmother, who had been taking care of me from infant after the death of my mother.

“At a point, she told me she didn’t have money to train me in school, so I did not have opportunity to go to school at all. I decided to find my way and seek for who could help me, so I left the village to try my luck in a big city.

“I had small money that could take me from my village to Port Harcourt. When I got to Port Harcourt, I had nowhere to stay, so I thought I could manage sleeping under the flyover bridge and early morning when I wake up, I will go and sell sachets water so I could feed.

“One day, I returned from my business to rest. I had carried the rubber mat I used in sleeping hiding at one corner for night to come and as I went into the corner to lay my head, I met two boys there who asked me what I was doing there. I told them that that was where I normally slept, as I did not have where to stay. They told me that they wanted to sleep with me, but I didn’t agree and they showed me a gun.”

She continued: “I became very frightened and began to pray to God to help me. They said if I didn’t agree with them, my dead body would be dumped by the roadside for passersby to see tomorrow morning.

“I was asked to lay down and at that point, I complied and both of them took turns to sleep with me. Subsequently, when it was time for me to see my period, it didn’t come.

“Everywhere was closed down because of lockdown, nobody moved on the road, not to talk of selling sachet water, and I was hiding there with no water or food to take. I was praying to God for help. Eventually, when the lockdown was eased, I came out and begged for food. My body had become weak and shaking. One woman that normally gave me sachets water to sell gave me food to eat.

“People were asking me how I was going to handle the pregnancy, who was going to train the baby and I did not go to hospital for anti-natal. There was no medicine, no money for a scan and my pregnacy was protruding.

“Some people advised me to sell the baby after delivery, but I was scared that the Police might catch me if I wanted to do such. They were giving me confidence that I would not be caught, but I refused to take such advice.

“As I was roaming around and explaining my predicament to people, I met one woman who told me about OPM. She said the church operated a free hospital and that I might be lucky to be admitted. She directed me and gave me little money that transported me to Aluu, where the church is located.

“When I got to the church, I narrated my story to the ushers and they took me to the general overseer and when he heard my story, he pitied me and took me to his house. The following day, he took me to the hospital, where I was registered and ran some tests on me after which I was told I have HIV.”

There and then, she was informed that she would be delivered through CS, so that her baby would not contract the disease.

“I delivered of a baby girl and Papa bought all the baby needed and took us back to his house, where we are being taken care of,” she said enthusiastically.

For Blessing, this is a temporary relief she prays to be permanent, in view of her health status and upkeep of the baby.

Her experience, indeed, typifies how vulnerable female destitute taking refuge under the bridges across the country are and how some of them have been exploited, harassed and intimidated into acts that have led to irreparable damages to their lives.

Why are you still jealous of Akwa Ibom, I think federal government don dash una refinery..
grin
Jealous of Akwa Ibom?? Are you Okay? Does Akwa I on measure up to Rivers State in any way. Akwa Ibom that is trying to build a port in 2020, Rivers already had a seaport far back 1913. Also has Onne seaport . Rivers has Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone that is the largest in West Africa. Rivers has an International airport since 1975. Has 2 of Nigeria's 4 Refineries. Rivers has Nigeria's only functional Modular refinery. Rivers has Nigeria's only LNG plant. Rivers is not Akwa Iboms mate. And can never be.

I am only laughing at your state propaganda of making projects that are yet on the drawing board to seem like it is real.

Incurred the wrath of Nigerians when he facilitated the Chinese loan at the expense of our Sovereignty.
Amaechi has no blames. Because the legislature making noise now initially scrutinized the loan before the approval. Why didn't they raise this issue at that initial stage.

Also, the loan was signed by the Minister of finance on behalf of the Nigerian government.

All Amaechi did was to implement the rail revolution. Besides if we don't default on the loans, then we have nothing to fear. Nigerians have cultivated a culture of not keeping to their loan obligations else why would repayment be a source of concern. If you must plan to borrow, you must also plan to repay.

If you can not maintain your old cars, then there is no need of buying new one cos you won't still maintain it...
Wat sort of logic is that. Dont you know that old age births expiration??. Why do old people and old machines die off? Na wah oh. Why do they retire old planes, old cars, old computers, old Refineries, old clothes etc because with aging comes a drop in quality and malfunction. Don't try to be illogical. just drop this debate.

How have they maintained the current refineries?
So because they are finding it difficult to maintain the now obsolete Refineries, they shouldn't build new ones?? If you have an old car you use for business and your spending so much on it and it's not performing to optimal level, you shouldn't get a new car??

You are Yoruba an your comment is made in bad faith because you'd wish the only functional refinery should be dangote refinery in Lagos state. Anywhere else and you'd cast aspersion as always.

Why is Eastern Palm University controversial? Owerri people made it controversial when Owerri landlords fought former governor Okorocha who set out to locate IMSU permanently in the grounds of today’s Eastern Palm University, so that Owerri could make do with FUTO, AIFCE, FEDPOLYNEKEDE, FERCOLAT and even Imopoly nearest Owerri.

Define primitive greed in Owerri dialect. How come such greed?
Why will Rochas ever plan such wicked act of taking away IMSU from Owerri. IMSU and Nekede are the main suppliers of the Owerri escort industry.. He claims he want to develop hospitality and yet he wants to reduce the supply system. Fvck Rochas Okoroawusa.

Highzik20:
I just don't know where all this uneducated literate gets their fact from, how on earth will u say Ibibio that is just found predominantly in akwa ibom and cross river will be more than ijaw. why not make ur research first b4 posting trash for some ignorant nairalander to absorb. And even the fool who is not from river state saying there is no ijaw in river state better go back to ur history books.
Ijaw people (also known by the subgroups " Ijo" or "Izon "wink
are people in Niger Delta in Nigeria , inhabiting regions of
the states of Ondo , Bayelsa , Delta , Edo, Akwa Ibom and
Rivers state with an approximate population of 14 million while ibibio are mostly found in Akwa Ibom , Cross
River , and on the Eastern Part of Abia state with an estimated population of about 10 million.
Please can you kindly breakdown the spread of the 14million Ijaws.

I know that Ijaws are in these states and I know the terrain of those areas. I use Google maps regularly and with the satellite mode you can conveniently know areas that have human habitation. so again, kindly show how you arrived at 14Million Ijaws.
PoliticsRe: Ijaws And Ibibios Which One of them Is More In Population by 24SEVEN: 11:01am On Aug 23, 2020
garfield1:
I agree that ijaws are not as ubiquitous and visible as ibibios but half or more than half of those you think are ibibios are not...we just have to work with the 2006 census figure
If you are not Visible, then what is the argument. Your tribal names explains your distinct identity, and you will agree with me that except Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa names, the most recurring in the south are easily Ibibio(I can't distinguish them from Annang and Efik) and maybe say Urhobo. You hardly hear Ijaw names randomly except in areas that are traditionally populated by them.

I know arguments might be made that some Ijaws have English surnames, but they are a very small percentage. So then, where are the Ijaws.

Once Population figures are thrown open for discuss, you'd get alot of insincerity due to the fact that Nigeria will share allocation based on the size of your population. No one wants to be found wanting.

As at 2014, Ijaws cliamed to be 14million strong. Can you imagine that??
PoliticsRe: Ijaws And Ibibios Which One of them Is More In Population by 24SEVEN: 8:06am On Aug 23, 2020
garfield1:
Good.I like your manner of argument which means you can bow to superior reasoning.one,,the op is talking about Ibibio as a single group not a combination of Ibibio,efik,anang,oron..he meant ibibios alone though they all share similar language and culture.I am from cross river and akwa ibom is like my 2nd home so am more grounded on this topic.if you combine ibibios and others, then they can outnumber ijaws but if you single them out alone, they aren't more than ijaws but can be said to be the third largest in the ss.

Now,akwa ibom has 31 lgas and three senatorial districts and about 3.8 million as at 2006.let's approximate it to 4 million.ibibios dominate uyo senatorial zone which has 9 lgas.the ikot ekpene zone had 10 lgas.8 lgas here are annang which is the 2nd largest ethnicity in akwa ibom.the other two lgas are ibibios which are INI and ikono.in eket zone, there are 12 lgas.the oron or oro who are the largest group here dominate 5 lgas, eket or ekid has two.mkpat enin and ikot abasi and onna are Ibibio which means Ibibio dominate 14 out of 31 and if you count the population here, its about 2 million.

In rivers,it is confusing but I know that after the igbo speaking lgas, ijaws are the 2nd largest.I have never counted andoni as ijaws.those I see as ijaws are asari toru, akukutoru, okrika, ogubolo, opobo nkoro, bonny, degema and abua odual partially.I know you may want to argue but let's leave it at 1 million.
In bayelsa, its 90% ijaws and with a population of 2 million,1.8 should be ijaws.
In delta, ijaws dominate burutu, bomadi and patani,40% of warri south west and warri north lgas.this places them at 500_000.
In ondo, ijaws dominate ESE odo and are many in ilaje.that's at least 200,000.so you see that they outnumber ibibios even if you minus rivers.I haven't added the ijaws in akwa ibom and edo
I am from Rivers, I know about the Rivers Ijaw clans well, and I also know about Bayelsa. Most times what you see is not what you get. There are no official ethnic figures and I won't be estimating figures because it leaves room for anyone to come up with whatever figure they like.

The Ibibios are more visible. You see them everywhere with their distinct identity. Same can't be said of Ijaws. You need to be seen to be counted.

I thought you are ijaw? So your implying that ibibios are more populous
Im Ikwerre. I sincerely don't know which is more populous given that Ijaw has the spread across states albeit in swampy and waterlogged terrain. But bro, you have to accept the fact that the Ibibios/Annang/Efik are almost everywhere, being very visible and distinguishable.

Ijaw to me is more like the conglomeration of peoples inhabiting waterlogged areas and worshipping water deities as the culturally approved religion.

Andoni doesn't understand Kalabari. Kalabari does not understand Izon, Opobo doesn't understand Abua and so on. So rare to see people not speaking and understanding same language, yet claim to be of same ethnic stock.

There are 31 LGAs in Akwa Ibom. There are only 8LGAs in Bayelsa. So state analogy wouldn't hold waters, especially when almost everywhere in Bayelsa is made up of water. No pun intended. grin

Hosea Yakubu and two of his colleagues V The military man on mufti and three of his colleagues.

The fight is 3 V 4. it's not so bad, the soldiers only had a man more. They ought to have had a free for all, but cowardice will not allow Police to confront soldiers. So they sat back and watched their colleague being beaten to Death.

Cowards they say usually die a thousands times.
