I've been using that airport since 2011 and that's a normal scene. Problem is that it's an international airport with just one terminal so it will always be crowded. This is not even much, go there on a Saturday evening and see crowd.

This is not to say people aren't leaving Nigeria in droves.

You're right and he's also right. You see those your friends they left to Germany on a work permit but if they had a degree they'd have left on an EU blue card. You can google to see how much advantage one has over the other.

It looks like everywhere in Nigeria is no infested with noisy humming sounds from neighbor's generators and this stuff is almost impossible to escape from unless you live in some sort of GRA or something.

I'm a student in one of the federal universities in Nigeria and I live in a lodge off-campus and it looks like everyone in this whole community uses generators and it can be very noisy especially at night when I need to concentrate and get stuff done.

How do you guys cope with this? It seems like something one can't run away from these days.

YouTube projects are garbage. Reading other people's code taught me how to use context API. Funny enough the react course I was using never mentioned this.

I learnt context API on YouTube. The key to courses on YouTube is checking the date and looking at title attached to the timestamps. Not all YouTube projects are garbage.

Now, to be honest, I just clocked 26. I was done with my sec. education way back in 2012. Due to one problem to the other, i couldn't further. I had to involve myself in some menial jobs to sustain myself for the meantime and along the way, i learned phone and computer engineering and i do brush through some very important books occasionally.

This is where I need your wise opinion guys. Dad got into a problem when i was about to finish sec. School and since then,hes been repaying debt till now. Infact, debt has consumed all his salary. He's just borrowing from peter to pay Paul to survive.


And he's still of the opinion that i go to school. I got admission to study pharmacy at OOU in 2018, paid the acceptance fee but couldn't pay school fees and i lost it for good. So he wants me to try again but where will he even see the money when school wahala comes again? He's gonna go the borrowing way again i guess; compounding the problem we have at hand


So I've been thinking....what if i go back to factory work, then get myself a computer and learn programming "frontend development for a start"? I want to dedicate atleast 1 to 2 years to learn it. Then after that, i would proceed to school either on part time or full because i still want to further my education to get the b.sc cert. at the minimum.

Honourable men and women, CONSIDERING THE NIGERIA OF TODAY, i need your wise words at this critical junction of my life.



If I'm done with the programming, can it atleast sustain me a little bit?

Should I faithfully follow my dad's intention or just go through my own plan?

My advise will solely depend on knowing what branch of Software Engineering you're interested in. You don't need to bother yourself about any institute, YouTube is the only teacher you need right now, everything you want is there.

I'm learning web development, to an extent, I Know HTML and CSS, but it's like every time I look, there's always something I'm yet to learn. I feel like it'll take me up to 10 years to be proficient.

I've been in this industry for a good number of years and I can tell you that feeling of doubt never leaves. So it's a normal thing.

When you say you know HTML and CSS to an extent, do you mean if I give you a random design right now you'll be able to code it from scratch?

We sincerely need a way forward on this issue. I've done my data capture since November 2020 and they are still on this story of no booklet.

You have only one option. Skill up! Pick up interest in any valuable IT related skill and if you end up mastering it, you will be out of naija in two years.

Cost of living in Aberdeen should be quite reasonable now. Sadly it was hit by the 2014 oil price wahala so rents were affordable before Covid and should still be that way now. As for jobs, it's a smallish town (the University of Aberdeen is virtually in the city centre and Garthdee, where RGU is, is a short bus ride away from the city centre) and I don't think there would be many available this Covid period just like in other similar-sized locations until things pick up post-lockdown. As its a small town, you can reach everywhere you need to go on foot if you put your mind to it.

You are right about the cost of living being low because of the oil crises. It's not a smallish town at all, it's a large city. The University of Aberdeen is not in the city center, it's on Kings Street, Union street which is often regarded as the city center is around 40 minutes walk to the University of Aberdeen(Used to do that route on foot during Uni). I totally agree about your assertion on the economy, It's heavily dependent on Oil and tourism and both have been badly hit. Let me also add that University of Aberdeen is tough, you will get kicked off your course if you fail once, in RGU you will be given an opportunity to resit but will be kicked off if you fail again.

Please i want to begin my journey in programming but i do not know where to start from. I have no IT background nor IT cert. I'm just a guy with passion to learn and make a living out of it.
Please, I would really aporeciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction. I read somewhere that it is a process and there are steps to it, and not starting with the right steps can make you have drawbacks in future.
