what is so fantastic about RGU? I know people who've gone there for oil and gas engineering but had to go work in banks. . .I think that school is simply a business run to give the impression that an oil and gas qualification is your ticket to an oil job when its not true. It may be a good institution, but i don't think its fantastic and it probably isn't that high up in UK school rankings, past glory or not.
Its 55th in the Times ranking but 4th for graduate prospects(absolutely unbelievable).Ultimately,it depends on your course of study.

@Sky Blue

Brainiac,'college' in the US tends to be used in a different context from the UK.Darfur couldn't have been referring to what constitutes high school education in the US which is generally free.
Foreign AffairsRe: Expectationz From Obama by 4Play(m): 2:36pm On Jun 15, 2008
Sky Blue:
@4 Play, sorry but i have to jump in, apart from international students, college in the UK is free! Education in the UK is free except at University levels whereby loans are obtainable as well as grants and fees are subsidised. It is only about 2 years ago that Universities where allowed to charge what they wanted as fees from students whereby more support was then provided for students in higher loans.
I presume darfur was using the term college in the American sense,post-secondary education(mainly Universities).

If you are using the term, college,in reference to those institutions that offer mainly vocational training in the UK,its not free if you are not of compulsory school age. However, the US does offer free education for compulsory school age anyway so I don't get your point.

No sensible Govt, unless the oil-rich or their ilk, will continue offering free tertiary education.Even continental Europe is adopting the American model. There is a reason the Americans provide the bulk of the intellectual talent-their universities are extremely well funded because they don't rely on the State.

in the UK college is practically free. some places in scotland and even wales pay their citizens to go to college.

health in the UK is free for everyone. universal health care. in the us, many can't afford a serious illness that may need surgery. i have seen cases where people could not afford surgery and were left to die. it can't happen in the UK, b/c it is free.
College in the UK is £3000/$6000 per year. Besides, this obsession with "free" masks an obtuseness on your part. You may not have realised it but in the UK,money doesn't drop into the Govt's purse from the sky. There is no mythical heavenly creature showering the Govt with money.

The "free" healthcare(which many of us avoid and instead subscribe to private healthcare providers)is paid for through one of the most extortionate tax rates in the Anglo-Saxon world. There is no true "free healthcare" anywhere on the planet apart from commodity rich nations like in the oil-rich Gulf.

That is why life expectancy in the US is barely different from that of the UK.Some medication, like the cancer drug Herceptin up to 2007,aren't available on the NHS except via private healthcare .Thank God for BUPA.

That a country provides purportedly free healthcare/education is besides the point. The most important issue is the quality of the service.Education is free in Russia but most people would rather go to a US university than a Russian one.

when little george came to the white house he made some changes in education loans that made it hard for some people to take loans for education. these were things clinton had put in place. but b/c he needed money to sponsor a war he cut education funding.
I think it will help if you actually researched on things before paraphrasing leftist claptrap you get from the net.The DOE's appropriation for Clinton's last year in office,2000($38.4bn).Since then it has been '01($42bn),'02($56bn),'03($63bn),'04($67bn),'05($71bn),'06($100bn),'07($67bn).That is $466bn in the 1st 7 years of the Bush administration, compared to $265bn in the 8 years of the Clinton administration.http://www.ed.gov/about/overview/budget/history/edhistory.pdf

The DOE's last appropriation under Bush 1 was $32bn,when Clinton left office it was $38bn.

For many people, perception is reality. The world is more peaceful now than at any other period in human history. The ascent of 24/7 news coverage coupled with globalisation's impact on our knowledge of the outside world has a way of magnifying events and issues out of proportion. In simple terms, there are fewer wars and less poverty than there has even been in human history.

Adebayor will open contract talks this week where he is expected to be offered a new-improved £80,000-a-week deal to stay in London. That would eclipse the £35,000-a-week deal the Togo international signed last year.

United have paid £200,000 for the 16-year-old prodigy, who will be offered £95,000 per year, plus all expenses paid for the youngster to fly home to Italy on a regular basis.

The move has been mooted for over a month now, with Petrucci being hailed as one of the most exciting young prospects in Italian football.

The striker will make the move in time for next season, but almost certainly will either be playing in the reserves or loaned out to gain first team experience.

Newspaper Il Romanista has blasted United for "stealing the youngster, contending that "in three or four years, [Petrucci] will be worth 100 times as much."

The news comes just days after 17-year-old Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey opted to sign for Arsenal, despite Manchester United having thought to have been at the head of the queue for his signature. Everton were the other club with a bid accepted who ended empty handed.

The Libyan leader, Muammar Gadafy, has reinforced his reputation for plain and provocative speaking by suggesting that Barack Obama is a black man with an "inferiority complex" and might behave "worse than whites" if he becomes president of the United States.

Gadafy's striking non-endorsement of the Democratic candidate focused in part on Obama's pledge of "unshakeable" support for Israel, which caused dismay, if not surprise, across the Arab and Great One worlds last week.

"Obama's announcement that a unified Jerusalem should be the eternal capital of Israel and that he will support it with $30bn during the next 10 years has disappointed our hopes and that of the Africans," Gadafy said in a speech marking the evacuation of the last US air base in Libya shortly after he seized power in a coup in 1969.

"The statements of our Kenyan brother of American nationality Obama on Jerusalem , show that he either ignores international politics and did not study the Middle East conflict or that it is a campaign lie."

Obama should promise to give Africa the money Washington allocates to Israel to "build a dam on the Congo river to supply the whole African continent with power", he said.

"We fear that Obama will feel that, because he is black with an inferiority complex, this will make him behave worse than the whites … This will be a tragedy," Gadafy said. "We tell him to be proud of himself as a black and feel that all Africa is behind him."

Obama has been variously endorsed by a myriad of tin-pot dictators so Qaddafi should calm down.

don't be a cretin - Albelda had a POOR season and didn't play much at Valencia, Baraja is over the hill, of course they will be replaced by other players. Cesc is at par with Iniesta/Xavi and will probably be better than them, but due to their experience and the fact that they are still on form, they still get seniority over Fabregas. Are you saying the Fabregas of 2006 is the same as now? Or he hasn't improved and gotten better?

Where did I say he was better than Iniesta or Xavi? I said he is good enough for the first 11, it all depends on what formation the coach decides to play. But while on the subject, his role in the team is to create and score if he can, he did that for Spain - what else is required of him to be in the starting 11 I ask?
Does this ignorant Gaynner realise that Aragones dropped Baraja and Albeda, especially the former, long ago? If Aragones operates on the basis of seniority, why are the likes of Raul,Joaquin and Raul Tamudo not ahead of some of their younger teammates.

In what way is Iniesta(23 caps) the "senior" to Cesc(27 caps). If Aragones operates on the basis of seniority, why did Cesc get a starting place as far back as '06?Perhaps,he has "regressed" in age and experience in the subsequent years.

He is good enough for Spain's starting 11 but he is not any better than his midfield rivals? That will be like Michael Owen being good enough for England's starting 11 but not necessarily being any better than the strikers he is competing with.

debosky:
shut up 4Play! tongue

We all know its Aragones' selection and of course the 'seniority' factor responsible for Cesc's position on the bench. He is good enough to be in the starting line up, but the coach prefers the more experienced Iniesta+Xavi to be the creative hub with two strikers. A player who comes on and creates a goal and sccores another is obviously good enough for the starting 11, the key is the formation chosen by the coach.

and who the heck thinks he is better than Maradona and Pele combined ? huh grin grin
Seniority factor? Presumably,Iniesta and Xavi are "seniors" to Baraja and Albeda.Torres and Villa are also seniors to Raul and Morientes.

Was it not the same Aragones that gave Cesc a starting berth during the last world cup?It was the criticisms of Cesc's performance by the Spanish media that prompted Aragones to drop him not some inane concept called "seniority".Only Gaynners will come up with such hogwash.

Because Cesc scored and had an assist,he is now better than Iniesta and Xavi? Never mind that this was his 1st goal in 27 games for Spain.
SportsRe: European Nations Cup 2008 Discussion Thread by 4Play(m): 9:31pm On Jun 10, 2008
Funny isn't? Arsenal's best player isn't good enough to start unless Spain are playing 5 midfielders.

Wenger is going for the grand slam quadruple next season-4 consecutive seasons without a trophy! grin

As for Ade,nobody is interested in signing him.Basically, football agents make the most pay when their player effects a transfer or a more lucrative contract extension. If his agent wants to drum up interest and 'coerce' Arsenal to give Ade a better contract,he better come up with more plausible tales than a £32m bid from AC Milan.Hleb's fabulist agent has been engaging in some fairy tales about mega-bids from Inter and Barca as well.

Its also the fault of idle journalists who make up silly stories.I guess they have to make up for the lack of real footballing stories.

When a serious bid comes in for any of Arsenal's foreign legion-Fabregas,Adebayor,Clichy,e.t.c-they will be gone in a heartbeat.I heard Cesc is on the verge of a £90,000 p/w contract with Arsenal. If Barca or Real were to offer £100,000
(which they won't),Cesc will be saying hasta la vista to London.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (Old) by 4Play(m): 1:19pm On Jun 07, 2008
For a Barca side that has signed Seydou Keita for 18million or thereabouts, there is every possibility that they will want him to go into the first team immediately and thus deprive Yaya of a starting shirt. He is 'crucial' to Barca eh? Isn't Eto'o crucial? Isn't he being contemplated as a departure?

You also seem to ignore the fact that a new helmsman is in charge who may not like Yaya or his style of play, moreso when someone in his exact same position has just been recruited. it is very possible that Yaya would come to Arsenal, if Arsenal want him and if Barca are willing. The player has expressed desire to play alongside his brother so there isn't a great deal of fuss over him playing for us.
Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure are not necessarily competing for the same position.Yes,Keita can play in a holding role,as Toure does for Barca, just in front of the defence but at Sevilla,Keita played mostly in front of Christian Poulsen with the latter performing the holding role Yaya performs for Barca.

Yaya expressing his desire to play alongside his brother is besides the point. There is no way he will want to leave Barca at the pinnacle of his career to join a lesser club.Barca haven't indicated any interest in selling him nor have Arsenal indicated an interest in signing him.

Then another issue comes up, did the whites who had farmed in Zimbabwe for decades transfer or pass on any knowledge to Black farmershuh?

Were they just hugging all the knowledge and not sharing to protect their own economic interests.
Are you having a laugh? huh Is farming knowledge so esoteric that white people could be somewhat at fault for the supposed cluelessness of black Zimbabwean farmers?
Foreign AffairsRe: Mumugabe (Mugabe) Blames The West by 4Play(m): 6:59pm On Jun 03, 2008
beystwin:
Isn't it obvious enough?
Their farming machinery and equipment originate from the Western countries. Therefore, sanctions affected them badly.

Another factor is that when the black farmers took over from the white farmers, there was no point in them manufacturing the same products (e.g. viable products such as wine, cheese, tobacco), because these products were mainly sold to the Western world, and due to the sanctions imposed by the West, there is no viable market for black farmers manufacturing these products.

Of course there were other crops they could produce (e.g. ground nut, corn); however, these at the time were less viable.

Lastly, capital was another factor. Most banks in Zimbabwe were owned by whites, and when the white farmers left, it was difficult for black farmers to get loans.

This is how sanctions affect the economy. embarassed
I thought your decision to end your post with an "embarrassment" emoticon was telling in a profoundly ironic way.Truly, you should feel embarrassed about this nescient post of yours.

I have seen some well argued, albeit erroneous, cases made in support of the contention that sanctions are the major causes of Zimbabwe's economic malaise but yours isn't one of them.

Zimbabwe is not under trade sanctions.Zimbabwe is free to import trade machinery from the West to its heart delight, thus any suggestion that sanctions prevent it from importing farm machinery is pathetic. So also is the rather obtuse claim about Zimbabwe's agricultural products being blocked out of Western markets.

The only product Zimbabwe is prohibited from buying from the West is military equipment.

As for the last comment about Zimbabwe being unable to raise capital, that is only true in so far as raising capital from international institutions(e.g IMF & World Bank) is concerned.Domestic Zimbabwean banks, like every other bank, pursue their self-interest. Zimbabwean banks will not fail to provide loans merely out of racial spite.
