Why we named gun after Obasanjo — Army chief

Sunday, March 25, 2007

THE Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, scandal re-echoed, weekend, as Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, DICON, says it is set to start mass production of the Nigerian version of Automat Kalashnikov 47 (AK47) rifle named after President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Director general of DICON, Major General Nnaemeka Charles Maduegbunam, made this known, weekend, while receiving newly appointed Nigerian ambassadors to other countries at the DICON factory, at Kakuri, Kaduna.

Vice President Atiku Abubakar had, in the course of the allegations of corruption and counter allegations between him and the president on the management of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, money revealed that Obasanjo withdrew about N1 billion from PTDF account to fund the rifle project.

Atiku made the allegation while testifying during the Senate ad-hoc committee hearing on the PTDF scandal.

“Let me use this opportunity to intimate our August guests with some of our other successes. In February 2006, we embarked on the design and production of assault rifles similar in characteristics to the famous Automat Kalashnikov (AK 47). This rifle which is named OBJ 006 was designed and produced within five months. An improved version of the OBJ 006 is under development and is nearing completion…

“In the area of production, we have made remarkable improvement. For example, as at January 2006, 7.62 mm x 51 ammunition production was a dismal 500 rounds per day but, today, it is about 20,000 rounds per day. The 9mm x 19 ammunition production line which was last used in 1982 has also been resuscitated. Similarly, in the production of arms, we produced 1000 Nigerian Rifle I (NRI) in the last two months and additional 500 are in the production line. These were arms last produced in the year 2000. We will not rest in our oars until DICON achieves the purpose for which it was established”, the army chief said.

Maduegbunam also told the ambassadors that the Nigerian new rifle was named after Obasanjo because the president was the second sitting Head of State to visit DICON after General Yakubu Gowon.

This country cannot develop without foreign investment.We should not create a climate where foreigners feel that the business environment is susceptible to manipulation for the advantage of those with connnections to politicians

Before DSTV,we did not have any notable pay TV operator,now that DSTV has shown that money could be made in this sector,well connected people have decided to muscle in

There are many sectors in Nigeria that remain largely untapped,why should any foreign investor come in if half way through,some highly connected coy will use the tools of Govt to muscle in.

There is another reason why am sceptical of some Nigerian coys.Whether we believe it or not,a significant amount of these coys are fronts for looted funds.When I use their services,I feel like someone who has been robbed and is going to buy goods from the robber.

@glamourgal

If you think a condition of living is better than the other it is only natural for one to expect you to want to live in that condition.If you thnk that a communist state is better than a capitalist state then it might make sense to expect you to live in a communist state.

You are not British indigenes so you don't have to live in Britain.You should practice what you preach.You preach that a communist state is better than a capitalist state but yet don't want to live in one.

Have you ever even made a trip to one of these communist states?

How can you be in a society where people work hand in hand to benefit everyone and say it's not good?
Exactly!If I may ask then,what are you doing in the UK if you don't like capitalism? huh

Why don't you go to Cuba,N.Korea .e.t.c.there you can live in your communist paradise

Is this not hypocrisy in its purest form?

@JosBoy

That is irrelevant to your first post in which put up a link and started preaching to us about "soilders fighting soldiers"

My point is that is there is no evidence that the US intends to kill civilians for if they did,their would be no insurgency in Iraq.Your initial posts are pointless

The best way to avoid war in Iran is for the Mullahs to avoid intervening in Iraq by conducting such operations as today's.You should be putting YouTube links about Iranian atrocities

JosBoy4Lif:
And you point, this is supposed to be a good thing? You know that intentional killings happen in war too, civilian and non-civilian
We don't know that the killings are intentional.If the Americans decide to make it a deliberate policy,to kill Iraqi civilans,their won't be an insurgency. Most of the intentional killings are done by Iraqi militias.

Pointing to dead bodies in war is pointless unless you know the circumstances of their death
