monshege:Actually, the average household did not have massive industrial farms.I lived in a village all my childhood and I have a pretty good idea of the size of the average farm.It was relatively small and the weeding, the building of ridges and the planting could be done in a full day on a household's entire farm monshege:All this is laughable.Helping people did not take up most of their time.Pooling labor resources as you suggest would only lead to lesser working time.So if you what you are saying is true, they could be spending as little as 30 days a year on farming |
spoilt:I saw some research on this a few years ago and it established that men in many parts of Africa did very little work for most of the day. Most of the work were done by women Most men spent their time drinking palm wine and talking with their friends while the women went to work . Southern Nigeria is a good example |
flakylady:You see how women are, even when things are going well, they "want to make up a big argument" . This was a rare moment of candour from a lady but an insight into the female tendency to argue for no discernible reason ![]() |
monshege:Are you a farmer? There is no way they farm all year round from morning to night monshege:People in the olden days did not have large industrial farms. They had relatively small farms.Remember, there are 365 days in year. Weeding of those small farms can be performed once every 2 weeks.Planting generally takes a day,at worse a couple of days.Harvesting takes the longest amount of time and at worse 5 days. All the above may take an average of 40-60 days out of 365.So what did the men do for the remaining 300 days.Besides,in some cases women did most of the farming Nobody has come up with a good answer as to what men did all day long in the past PS:I forgot to add digging up ridges, that can take a couple of days |
Can someone explain to me what men in the olden days did from morning to nite? They couldn't be farming cos you don't farm all year . |
Given that today,Zimbabwe is a major recipient of food aid from the West,I don't see how what is happening in Zimbabwe constitutes black empowerment especially since Zimbabwe used to be a major agricultural exporter Their is no "power" in taking food aid from the West nor is there "power" in causing many black Zimbabweans to take up asylum in Western countries. Policies that reduce a people to paupers surviving on foreign aid cannot by any stretch of the imagination be described as the empowerment of the people |
Secondary school pupils in north-eastern Nigeria have killed a teacher after apparently accusing her of desecrating the Koran, police say. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6477177.stm A female teacher has been murdered in cold blood for nothing ![]() |
behaviour on the part of officials in the public sector, whether politicians or civil servants, in which they improperly and unlawfully enrich themselves, or those close to them, by the misuse of the public power entrusted to them. This would include embezzlement of funds, theft of corporate or public property as well as corrupt practices such as bribery, extortion or influence peddling. This is a definition of corruption by Transparency International Corruption involves behaviour on the part of officials in the public and private sectors, in which they improperly and unlawfully enrich themselves and/or those close to them, or induce others to do so, by misusing the position in which they are placed. World Bank The solicitation or acceptance by a public official, directly or indirectly, of an undue advantage, for the official himself or herself or another person or entity, in order that the official act or refrain from acting in the exercise of his or her official duties. Article 8 of the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime http://www.anticorruption.info/corr_def_alt.htm It seems that many others define corruption as involving private gain |
The fact that people are getting married at a later age does not mean that people are having kids at a later age.The UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Europe |
The headline of the story is a bit misleading. They were indicted for illegally spending Govt funds.Corruption requires that such illegality is done for some personal gain. There is no indication in the report that the money was used for personal gain, just that it was appropriated without the neccasary approval. Nevertheless,it is still a rebuttal of the case made by those who think OBJ had no case to answer |
Donzman:This is not the West's cause. The Zimbabwean people are suffering because of Mugabe's tyranny. The West is not affected one jolt. |
Donzman:You can't deal with injustice and inequality by taking actions that will cause even more injustice and inequality. Creating a situation where the people of Zimbabwe are starving while the leaders are enriching themselves is the hallmark of injustice and massive inequality You have to separate the issue of land reform from Mugabe's tyrannical rule. The former is a must but should not be used as a smokescreen for the later |
debosky:How do you know that there was "no material way of him knowing"? My view is that we do not know either way but the circumstances suggest that we can't say with any degree of certainty that the President couldn't have known about Atiku's activities. I have not seen anything that will suggest that in the circumstances,OBJ was not in the position to know what was going on. In any civilised setting, the question should be "what did the President know and when did he know it"? |

chuckdee4:Why won't they value Yakubu less when Yak is much older. When Yak started playing professional football, many of them where in junior secondary ![]() If my memory serves me well,I can remember Yak played in the Challenge Cup in 1999. The fact of the matter is that England regularly finishes in the top 8 while our "underrated" Nigerian players have never made it past the 2nd round and just lost to Ghana 4-1 |
@Razorr A few weeks ago I mentioned that Barca were interested in signing Robben. At the time I mentioned it,as far as I know,it was not yet mentioned in the Press. What I heard is simply word of mouth from a football agent who knows a reliable journalist.Do you want a phone no? If it was something I picked up from the Press,I would have linked it.All I can tell you is that my source is usually very reliable |
Guus Hiddink called Frank Rijkaard last week and asked him if he would be interested in taking over at Chelsea.Hiddink informed Rijkaard that he (Hidink) would be joining Chelsea in some managerial capacity but not as first team coach. He asked Rijkaard if he would be interested in replacing Mourinho.Rikkaard said 'no thanks',that he has no interest in joining Chelsea This shows that Chelsea are still looking for a replacement for Mourinho. It may not work out in the end but,at least they are looking. Another thing is that Johan Cryuff is looking to bring Robben to Barca.Robben is a boyhood Barca fan and seems open to the idea but Chelsea are vehemently opposed to it.Cryuff decides most of the players that Barca signs You are probably wondering who my source is.Its a journalist who is in a position to know .Remember I broke the Robben story,a few weeks ago, before it appeared anywhere in the Press ![]() I have very reliable sources ![]() |
