Murky puddles of water had formed on the rough roads of Ojota, as a result of the five-hour heavy downpour of rain the crowded town witnessed the previous day. The distinctively clean smell of wet earth intermingled with an odorous stench that emanated from a nearby incinerator, filtered through the humid atmosphere and layers of grey nimbus clouds drifted freely across the July sky. Automobiles were lined up in traffic jam with hawkers of different items running back and forth along crammed lanes to sell their goods. As a road-side loudspeaker mounted by a CD retailer’s shop blared 9ce’s ‘Bo Kini Yen’, a bus conductor on the other side of the road waved in a rotary fashion, what appeared to be a face towel in the air as he shouted “Ketu, Ketu! Ketu, Mile 12! Wole, wole, wole oo!” At the conductor’s call, passengers hastily flew through the midday rush that plagued the busy town, into the bus, paying their transport fares at the door before entering. Eniola thought the day looked hopeful when she felt the heat from a golden beam of sunlight that hit the dusty window where she rested her head. She was on a bus that would take her to the Maryland area of Lagos where her eldest sister resided. She’d been looking forward to this much anticipated visit since the beginning of the week as the last time she got a chance to see her sister was during her sister’s baby’s christening six months before. “Conductor, o wa!” Eniola shouted brusquely from the back of the bus as the driver approached the littered front of a green-painted bus shed that overlooked the St. Agnes Anglican Church. “Change mi da?” Eniola spoke with rancor when she made demands for the rest of her change from the bus conductor. He had said he didn’t have her complete change and had only given her part when she paid her fare. “ Fun mi change mi joor.” She said, almost as a hiss. The conductor gave her a torn 50 Naira note he found in the breast pocket of his heavily soiled chequered shirt, but not without muttering a silent “ashewo” as he regarded her ample breasts and full hips with his bloodshot eyes. Choosing to ignore the snide comment the conductor had passed her way, she snuck the money into the side pocket of her handbag and walked forward to a commercial motorcyclist park. “Onigbongbo!” She gave the name of the street where her sister lived to the motorcyclist who she’d considered sane enough to get her safely to her sister’s house. “Eighty Naira.” The cyclist regarded Eniola with a smile on his face. Customers who were so well-dressed never complained when he mentioned ridiculous prices so he’d hiked the price by Forty Naira. “Look at this aboki o.” Eniola let out a laugh that came from the pit of her stomach. “You think say I be JJC for Lagos ni?” “No o madam, na the price wey we dey charge be that.” The motorcyclist said convincingly, pushing his luck. Eniola brought out two crisp twenty naira notes and flashed them at his face. “You go carry me abi you no go carry me? Answer me please, I am running out of time.” “I no fit o, that money too small. Na Onigbongbo we dey go o, e far well well.” The motorcyclist knew he had lost his bargaining battle when he saw her turn her back to him to negotiate with the bike man that was parked adjacent to him. “Okay madam, come, I go carry you go.” He said, motioning to her as he strapped on his helmet and started the bike. “Na because say na you o. If na another person, na eighty naira them for pay.” He said, as she balanced herself on the bike, hanging her left leg on the silenceR. “Abeg e don do!” Eniola chided. “Just try to go at slow speed please.” She warned as the motorcyclist used his legs to propel the bike forward before entering into the highway at full speed. 2 Likes |

“Ah-ah, Eny!” The fair-skinned woman screamed when she saw her sister standing outside her living room door. “So you have decided to surprise us today ehn? Come on in, come in!” She ushered her sister into her drab little living room with her free hand while she held her crying daughter on her shoulder with her other hand. “Sister mi, good afternoon ma.” Eniola bent her knees in a courtesy as she greeted. She was dabbing on her face with a blue handkerchief she’d earlier purchased in traffic on her way to her sister’s. “Sister Dupe, how are you?” She asked gleefully after she had ensconced herself on a black leather sofa that directly faced the TV set in the room. “Eniola, my baby!” Dupe was all smiles. She had missed her youngest and favorite sister terribly and was pleasantly surprised by her visit. “Don’t ask me how I am o. You just forgot about us abi? It’s alright. Won’t you carry your niece?” Dupe said, as she placed Jenny- her daughter- on Eny’s laps. “But we speak on the phone almost every day, Sister Dupe. Don’t be angry o. I should have come to see you since but I have been busy with school.” She paused to look at her niece as she bounced her up and down on her laps. “What are you feeding this child? Look at how big she is!” “Don’t mind her!” Dupe teased, looking at her daughter with motherly admiration. “She is starting to look more like her father, getting bigger and bigger every day.” “You are very right on that one sister; she is the carbon copy of uncle Tunde!” She paused to place a kiss on the infant’s right cheek and nibbled her ear, and then continued. “Where is uncle? Oh, today is Tuesday! He must be at work.” “Yes, he went to work this morning and would be back at 5 as usual. What can I offer you?” Her sister asked and then immediately bit back her words. “Why am I even asking you sef, it’s not like you are a stranger here.” She let out a playful hiss and went over to join her sister on the sofa. “Yes o. This is my house, and you would definitely regret having me here by the time I am done with that fridge today.” Eniola said, chuckling as she pointed leftwards, towards the direction of the kitchen. “Oh trust me I know. Is it not you? You this glutton! Don’t worry, the fridge is well stocked.” Dupe scanned her sister’s full length in one sweeping glance and continued speaking. “Eny, Eny, I really having you around. How is school?” Eniola laughed at her sister’s, all too familiar jokes about her eating habits. Dupe was the only one who would throw oral jabs at her without her getting offended. “School is fine o, it’s just there. You know now, the usual hustle and bustle.” “I see.” Dupe answered thoughtfully, nodding her head slowly. “Do you even hear from Bukky and Shade? Those ones would never call me if I don’t call them.” She was talking about her two other younger sisters. “I haven’t seen or heard from Shade for about two months now but I see Bukky in school every time. She is part of the reasons I am here.” “Bukky is the reason you are here?” Dupe asked in a panicky tone. She scrutinized Eny’s face for signs of worry and when she didn’t notice any, she continued. “I hope she has not gotten herself into trouble again.” Dupe said, rhetorically. “No, no. As far as I know, she is fine. She only called me two nights ago to ask for your phone number. She sounded as though she needed to speak with you urgently so I am even surprised you have not heard from her.” “Hmm. She did not call me. I only hope she is okay. That girl is a bag of problems and I get worried by merely hearing her name.” “Whatever it is that she wants to see you for sister, just be careful. You know how their mother is, I don’t want further problems o.” Eniola detested their stepmother almost as intensely as she hated her two daughters. “You know me now Eny! You know how careful I am when it comes to dealing with those girls. No problem, I’m sure we don’t have anything to be worried about.” “Well, you never can say what those witches are up to.” Eny replied in a rather offhanded manner. Not wanting to discuss her step-sisters further, she changed topic. “Okay sister, I am hungry now. What’s in that your fridge?” She gave Jenny to her mother as she rose up and went to the kitchen. “Just don’t eat everything you find there o!” Eniola’s eldest sister screamed at her from the parlor, rising up to join her sister in the kitchen. ************************************************************************* |
