Fisher007: I totally agree with your second paragraph. That self control and self discipline is key. That is why I stated in my comment that no one can force you to do what you don't want to especially if you have strong will ( Now this goes for both lecturers and students).
But your first paragraph on power dynamic not been equal is wrong. So you feel the power students have is lesser than that of the lecturers. That is where you are getting it wrong.
Infact students have more power than the lecturers. I have seen students who are strong will and who know their right that don't participate in such acts. They record, (audio and at times videos) and report such incident to their parents and authority. Why because they are the one who decide what happens?
For example, it might sound funny to use this example in this case, a woman decide who she wants to have intercourse with in the dating world. Not the man. If you think as a male because you are woeing her and giving her lavish gift made her accept you, then you are in la la la land fantasy world. She still need to accept you even if she changes her mind. The power is in her hands. She can take all your gifts and praises and still end up with someone who gave her nothing. It is the pure truth. That is why most men are always complaining that after all they gave or did for her she didn't even look at them.
I believe this same point is valued for both students and lecturers. Even if you sweet talk the students, threatening the students, or the students approach the lecturers. It is still the students that will determine what happens. It is the lecturers that have a lot too loose in terms of employment, reputation, social status, marital status, and religious status. The students have more power to destroy the lecturers especially when they are discipline, determined and know their rights.
Simple. What if the student is MALE? > |

UdyOgwoUde: But I don't blame all these lecturers, in as much as some of them might be foolish. Some of these girls appeal the lecturer's to sex them for grade, (at least I've witnessed it). You will see a girl who knows she failed an exam going to the lecturer's office, not to beg the lecturer to help her pass the course, but to ask him; "Sir, what can we do about it"? Please desist from creating/perpetuating a FALSE EQUIVALENCY...
The power dynamic between lecturer and student are disparate and unequal, and always skewed in favor of the lecturer... If a student (female or male) comes to a lecturer to exchange sex for good grades, it’s the latter's FIDUCIARY duty to refuse/report.> |

Politics › Re: Yam, Egg, Milk, Fish Exempted From VAT — Highlights Of 2020 Budget by 9jaRealist: 7:29am On Oct 09, 2019 |
Bridget95: VAT;Value added tax ,increases the value on products and services and indirectly affect investment choice. Tanzania like many African countries for instance ,placed over 25% VAT on everything goods and services consumed there, this made everything expensive. VAT is a micro Portion of TAX on companies spread on goods and services which is shouldered by end users.investors run away from countries with high taxation.Tax policies are often made by dept redden countries to impress their creditors that they can service their loans ,but the indirect implication is decreased foreign investment. Not disputing that higher corporate taxes often work to deter investment... But yet again VAT is NOT a tax on investment because it’s not borne by the investor. It may serve to increase the value of goods/services, but not necessarily so as other cost elements can be used to keep prices down... Eg, distribution and other costs and/or margins can be cut to reduce the product price and thus ameliorate the price hike to the consumer. Furthermore, since VAT is administered by merchants, the threshold for VAT registration is a crucial factor... In Nigeria, it will be annual turnover of N25 million, which means most MSMEs (who will be the retailers, NOT the investors) will not levy VAT. __________________________ Meanwhile, don’t quite get the point that you were struggling to make about “tax policies” being made by debt-ridden nations to “impress” their creditors, since EVERY country employs “tax policies” (including tax-free jurisdictions, because the absence of taxation is actually a “tax policy”). In fact, contrary to your assertion, countries like Nigeria (which albeit cannot be rationally described as debt-ridden) use TAX HOLIDAYS (which is available in EVERY free-zone in Nigeria, as well as for so-called ‘pioneer’ industries) to seek to attract investment. Finally, Nigeria is not raising the levels of VAT taxes to “impress” creditors. The reality is Nigeria presently has (and always had) by far the LOWEST VAT rates among the 15 ECOWAS nations, because public finances have largely lazily relied on the rent “windfall” derived from crude oil sales rather than taxes as is the case with most of its peer nations (eg, S/Africa’s tax-to-GDP is almost 30%, Ghana’s is about 20%, while Nigeria’s is less than 6%). Since a large part of the is informal (or off the “tax grid”), VAT accords a shortcut to a broader tax base. > |

Bridget95: How can African economies encourage investment when thye increase tax, multiple taxation scare off investors. VAT is NOT a tax on investment (but rather on consumption)... Nonetheless, one has strike a careful balance in respect of tax policy. It should be too high as to depress consumer spending, but properly applied and employed it could be used to direct investment in certain areas and industries, and to generate additional revenue to support investment in infrastructure (including soft infrastructure in education, healthcare, etc.) that would in turn support private investment. > |

Fisher007: The truth is bitter. I hope you are all ready to swallow it.
Firstly let me commend their effort in this video. It was great and I am happy this is an eye opener which we already know about it.
Now my problem is the story is just one-sided. And I don't like one-sided story to make people feel good or convince themselves.
Our parents, grand parents, great grand parents knew about this sex for favours or marks thing. Even our uncles and aunts or boses still practice this on the younger ones. Keep your eyes open and don't come here and form you don't see it.
Now it is a choice if you want to get involved or not. It has practically been existing eversince. And yet some of us didn't get involved or participate in it. Not because we are holy (trust me we have our own bad habits). But we choose not too. Simple.
One thing I have learnt in life is you can never be used or influenced into doing what you don't want especially when you have a strong will and conviction.
The story is one-sided and it gets on my nerves. Do you know that the amount of students (both male and female student ) that offer themselves voluntarily for this sex for grades is way more than the ones the lecturer force or convince too.
Trust me you all will be amazed that most students even seduce, pay for hotel rooms voluntarily for lecturers to sleep with them. They purposely track lecturers, visit their lodge and practically rape this lecturers. This then makes most lecturers think all students want to be involved in this scheme.
Everyone here on nairaland are mostly hypocrites. You all want to tell me you didn't know about this even in your university years in Naija uni. To the extents some of you even knew your friends both male and especially female who will never attend lectures but will come out with grade A and B. You knew they did it from year one to year four. Even final year project was still through this scheme.
Do you want to tell me all lecturers force them to do it all through those years?
We are all just hypocrites and we are lying to each other. The truth is it will not stop. Especially with the current economy.
Am sure to gain admission now in Nigerian universities they will do the same scheme, with the high population of students that cannot gain admission every year because we lack institutions to admit them. Hmm.
Well I will end my case here. Accept what you see. There is nothing happening that is new under the sun. It might just have be upgraded or modified, but it is not new.
Simple truth but hard to swallow. Please desist from creating/perpetuating a FALSE EQUIVALENCY...
The power dynamic between lecturer and student are disparate and unequal, and always skewed in favor of the lecturer... If a student (female or male) comes to a lecturer to exchange sex for good grades, it’s the latter's FIDUCIARY duty to refuse/report.
Any lecturer, employer or person in a position to directly influence the grade/career of another person (and that goes for both male or female) has NO business whatsoever sleeping with such person, however much you may believe that the subordinate “willingly” want to. If you have NO moral compass (or self-control/self-discipline), you are NOT fit to hold a fiduciary/supervisory position.> |
