our inferiority complex in this country is just too much, we keep looking for anyone with the tiniest Nigerian root to achieve something we can use to massage our ego a bit all the time. Ask yourselves why didn't he/she represent Nigeria,..A failed state that cant support anything good She does NOT have the “tiniest” Nigerian root... She was born, raised and was initially trained in Nigeria - becoming national secondary schools champ in 2013 (or 2014). If money is the attraction, obviously poorer nations (like Nigeria) cannot compete... But ultimately, it is the culmination of the actions (or inactions) of ALL its people that make a nation what it is. > |

pocohantas: What Nigerians call smartness, would most times turn out to be total disresgard for the next person, basic etiquette, moral values, laws or rules and regulations.
A Nigerian will drive one way, get to the front- return to the correct lane and feel like a sharp guy.
A Nigerian will jump the queue, luckily they get attended to by whoever after dropping N200. They come back to you that is standing on the queue like a sane human being and tell you that you are not STREET SMART. So, you fit sleep here today o...Truly you might sleep there.
Na this kind smartness we dey exhibit most times. Majority of us are guilty of one or more. Not our fault sha, it is the kind of smartness you need to survive in a third world country, where everything-including the government is working against you.
The people that are BOOK SMART (we call them efiko and even demonise them), we stereotype them as clumsy and timid- NOT STREET SMART. The ones going about their businesses jejely are not left out from the above stereotype.
That is why when we go to countries where normal humans are, we complain it is slow, boring...etc. We have to relearn to live, because we have only been existing/surviving in the jungle we hopped on the plane from. The highlighted is NOT peculiar to Nigeria,.. NERDS are/were bullied in most of the advanced countries of the West. Meanwhile, every nation needs a mixture of intellect (book smart) and chutzpah (street smart) to develop... For example, many of the earliest entrepreneurs/pioneers who built the US were more ‘ballsy’ than intellectual. > |

ASHLAND: It seems you are not getting the gist; I am talking about how people or business without previous credit history which banks can use for them to get loan, you are saying something else. We are actually not on the same page. Can you read where people are saying they asked for loan and banks declined them? That is mostly because of lack of credit history. If I should pay some interest on a certain credit card in order to catalyze my credit history, what is bad in that? I got the “gist” alright... If, as a pre-requisite to get business or personal funding from a bank or financial institution, it is mandatory to deposit in a lockbox the same amount of personal funds, then (by whatever name you may prefer to call it - loan, credit card, etc - because you seem lost in nomenclature rather than focusing on substance) it is NOT a LOAN or credit (even if they give you a card euphemistically called a “credit card”). Accordingly, that methodology does NOT resolve the issue under discussion in this thread (to use your exact words as to what the issue under discourse is) of “people saying they asked for loan and the bank declined them”. Nonetheless, you have introduced a new element that it is substantively a payment to establish a credit history, the worthiness of which one presupposes is a personal decision for each individual. HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT HELP YOUR BUSINESS! First, your business account should (both by law, good corporate governance and just plain good sense) be SEPARATE from your personal account(s) and finances. In fact, the quickest route to the demise of startups is to CO-MINGLE business and personal finances. Ideally (and, in fact, by law) you should have DIFFERENT AND SEPARATE accounts (including BVN and TIN) for you and your business. Accordingly, again, unless you are providing personal guarantees for your business, shelling out money to create a PERSONAL credit history is an exercise in futility in resolving the issue of startup business people “saying they asked for loan and their banks declined them”. > |

Enyimbamercedes: Let’s increase it to 100%!!
My economics is rusty but a better way to increase VAT is to increase consumer confidence and spending power. If I earn more, I pay more income tax and my consumption increases. Increasing VAT will only stifle spending and won’t have the intended effect of raising revenue! What comes first? Increase VAT to fund increased minimum wage or increase minimum wage and get the benefit of increase income tax and increase in VAT revenue from more spending. Folks have to de-couple VAT from the minimum wage issue... Only a relatively small percentage of the workforce will be significantly affected by the new minimum wage. On the other hand, greater tax revenues (if not stolen/misused) would lead to greater investment in physical and social infrastructure (the latter including, education, skill development and healthcare) that should ordinarily grow the economy while generating more jobs. > |

sulaak: Low-grade iron ore will require more processing energy to refine the material into steel. Steel manufacturing is dependent on energy efficiency to work as a viable business, access to cheap electricity such as natural gas, followed by logistics (ports, rail, road and manufacturing hubs) provide added value.
Nigeria should focus on being higher up the industrial value chain, let Guinea Republic supply the good quality raw material, Nigeria will manufacturer the steel. Technology has made beneficiation an energy efficient process... Nigeria initially invested in mines in Liberia and Guinea until they were depleted... Then we started importing from Brazil, but beneficiation has since proven considerably CHEAPER. Btw, there is a wide disparity in the quality of Nigerian iron ore (even in Itakpe)... As the Australians discovered when they ventured into Nigeria, it ranges from 32%Fe up to 70%Fe. > |
Politics › Re: VAT Increment: Robbing Peter To Pay Paul? by 9jaRealist: 7:31am On Oct 04, 2019 |
Reality is Nigeria has the LOWEST VAT among ECOWAS countries...
VAT is a consumption tax... Thus the more you consume the more taxes you pay.
However, food and medicine (and basic educational materials) should be excluded from VAT... While the VAT on luxury items (champagne, luxury cars, etc) should be increased even more. > |
