my structural engineer used a 4rod column throughout his design, despite including a tank above the duplex. is this ok, i was expecting to see alot of 6rods columns.
Sorry for the late response. You have to be specific with your question sir. When you say "your engineer uses 4 rods for the column" do you mean the design engineer specify 4 number of reinforcement for each column, what is the diameter of this reinforcement, water level/position are these columns located ( ground floor, first floor etc), or do you mean your builder/site engineer use 4 rods throughout without regards for the structural designs.

I will like you to be clear on some of the raised issues before I can answer your question

I have been following all your threads, been reading since morning. I was looking for a self contained accommodation and the prices kind of steep. So I have been researching low cost houses and came across these pictures and would like to recreate something like these. I don't know much about houses but would like a rundown of the cost for a structure like these. These are 2 bedroom all ensuite. I would like a 3 bedroom version of it. Thanks.
This is nice, can we chat up in private sir?

Oh i see. Your problem is Emir. It simply denotes Oba like other places in Yoribalnad.

Now I get it. It is clear you guys have problems with anything islam. You want to bring your Oba version to ilorin where your new Oba eats old Oba's flesh. This diabolic crap MUST not come to ilorin. Fvck your agitation.

Yoruba coronation involves all types of nasty things exactly as portrayed in yoruba movies. So, no, we dont want that bullsh!t in ilorin. We don't want Egungun in ilorin. We don't want Agemo in ilorin. We don't want Oro in ilorin. We don't want Osun worship in ilorin. We don't want all these craps in ilorin. I am Yoruba man and I am a muslim. It does not in anyway means Yoruba are buttlickers of fulani.

Besides, a guy already told you that Emir of Ilorin is 80% yoruba. 20% Fulani.
The funny thing is I am a Muslim that was born among Hausa and Fulani. People must learn how to separate religion from politics, Fulani or Hausa see you first as a Yoruba before anything,I don't hate the emir of ilorin but i hate the fact that he is an extension of Northern hegemony in the heartbeat of Yoruba land.

You aren't dismantled British indirect rule and you are here fermenting internal trouble after another. Really shows Nigeria is really divided. There is no way you can succeed against British imperialism. When they colonized nigeria, they did not de-colonize it. They put a system in place that make every nigerian subservient to them. Part of the system they left is what's going on now. I repeat, this is unnecessary agitation. You have a lot to worry about not this nonsense. I agree that ilorin may not be the most populated muslim city but that's not really how i meant it. I meant that it stands out as a known muslim city full of great ulama. Neither me nor majority ilorin people see fulani as colonial masters. This rubbish comes from you guys to make a point.I will never support this. You need to first all fix Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, kwara and so on. Fix them in the sense that you provide basic needs for the people before talking about taking ilorin. Besides, i still dont get what you guys meant by you wanna take back ilorin when in fact, majority of the residents are Yoruba people. I lived in ilorin for 4 yrs. So whats the problems?
Agitating for control over an area that used to be part of the political border of ones ethnic group is not fermenting trouble, it is a genuine agitation. You talking about British colonial rule that ended 58 years ago when we have internal Fulani domination in out doorstep.

Fulani should never used religion yo take control of any part of Yoruba land, they are divine to rule over us and if you are comfortable with that, there are millions of us that are not comfortable with it.

I am never supporting ogbonis and the likes to rebel ilorin/kwara for the so called Yorubland. Yes, it is Yorubaland but aren't Yoruba majority in kwara state?.

Or they are taking about ruling class like Emir?. Well, I am for Islam and Muslims. If there should ever happen to be revolution in kwara, I will support mobilization of MUSLIMS only not ogboni and other Yoruba cults.

There are too many problems at hand already. Stop compounding problems by causing ethnic differences. Why is it not possible to succeed as one Nigeria?. It is people that make things difficult.

I am not in support of "The Oduduwa Republic"
What are you saying? Kwara is a Yoruba majority, it is geographically located in the south-west and such should be treated as a southwestern state. The irony of people like you that has been brainwashed by Fulanis ruling class to equate every agitation for Yoruba control as that of pagan or cult is stupid.

It makes more economic sense to have Kwara in the south-west, it is closer to Lagos (about 4hours) where most of the economic activities is going on and most of its inhabitant are already in Lagos making their daily bread

Agriculture is good FOR SECURITY. But when you are talking employment in a 200 million people economy . That is a bad joke.

We must MANUFACTURE or IMPORT TVs, Computers, Fridges Washing Machines ,Cars and such like to meet the needs of those 200 million. If we import how do we pay for it with cashews?

We cannot manufacture without investment in power and transport infrastructure. Now who is it that is investing in Mambilla Plateau our rail and roads it is China we need to wake up to who our real friends are
You are 100% percent correct. The mindset that agriculture can solve the unemployment of 180m people is a joke taking too far.

Agriculture is an insignificant part of the economy in the long run, what we should really be looking at is the development of our hydrocarbons to generate the much needed electricity, extraction of our raw materials to meet up with our industrial demands and massive industrialization policies to utilized the large cheap labor we have in our disposal.

Agriculture covers a long range of our day to day lives.
Most people only think agriculture is just planting and harvesting of crops which is not.
Today, we have agricultural engineering, this covers a whole lot of areas, from the operations of machines to the maintenance and innovation of various devices to aid work.
There is also an aspect of agriculture that engages in producing seeds using scientific means. This area also involves themselves with using their products to solve health issues by focusing on a particular area of concern. (these people cultivate their plants just for the cure of some certain disease's)
How about agricultural economics, and a whole lot of others in relation to agriculture.
This is a field or area Nigerians doesn't want to engage in because of the old method of getting things done.
Life has gone beyond buying land and planting seeds.
The contribution of agriculture to GDP is an indication of how developed or poor a nation is, the larger the contribution of agriculture to GDP the poorer or less developed the nation is.

Most developed countries with a more advanced mechanized agriculture have GDP accounting for less than 5% of GDP while industries accounting for over 20% of GDP and servicing accounting for the larger chunk of over 60% in most cases. These clearly show that priority should be given to education as a means of bridging the cap of human capital, the more educated the population are the more efficient and productive they becomes.

Value chain sounds good in textbooks. The reality of real life is value chain requires skilled workers and technology as welll as nfrastructure.

Tell me how many third world countries have broken out of poverty with agriculture ?? Leave all that talk for the seminars and lecture theatre and welcome to reality. What happens to all the produce rotting in our farms that fail to enter the so called value chain??

The only value chain you see in third World countries is packing bananas cashews groundnuts coffee in cartons and loading them into refrigerated containers . How many of those do we need to sell to pay for one of those new helicopters.
Oldest and best form of generating income? What do you mean by "BEST" huh People just throw words around how is agriculture better than selliing Military helicopters IF you know how to make them.
The Nestles and Cadburys of ths world are not African and they are the ones that call the shots. We have not organized ourselves into companies like KRAFT and UNILEVER and so on who have the ear of their presidents and advise them on trade deals

My point is Agriculture cannot employ our millions of young people and give them good income. It is slave labour for peanuts . Not only can it not employ them but if we do not develop our own manufaacturing we would continue to import shoes and clothes and cars and tyres and paper and hair like we do now .

The question is with what will we pay for our imports? Yams and onions?

Even agriculture requires KNOWLEDGE and CAPITAL which means consolidation not fragmentation. It means that many small players would be wiped out or you cannot compete with cheap imports. Ask any poultry farmer how much it costs to produce a chicken in Nigeeria. In the US and Brazil they would produce for a quarter of that because you have farmers with $100 million capital growing corm on land the size of Ikeja and Surulere next to their poultry.

We live in a globalized world and if Buhari signss the proposed trade deal we just cannot compete with our hoes and shovels.

Our farmers would just have to surrender

The only way those billions spent importing is to be spent at home is when we organize into big companies . Without that forget aboout farming and even with that we will make money but lose jobs.

Our people are very low skilled and poorly educated
Bross, you are on point. People throw lots of words around without really having a clue about their meanings.

Mechanized agriculture creates very little high-end job that most developing countries don't have the manpower and financial power to handle. It is a myth that agriculture, when done properly, will generate the much-needed job and lift people en mass out of poverty. Agriculture without corresponding strong manufacturing sector will only make a country a poor third world nation that produces raw materials for industries in the developed world.

People should ask how countries like Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore were able to lift people out of poverty and developed a more robust and diversify economy

Sypder over the year you have made tromenduce contribution to this thread form explaining through picturing. When people like you and other professionals in the house talk we listen. From your experience, which of the filling system is more affordable and durable, that can be recommended for water logged areas. Between the sharp sand and laterite filling, this question is not particular to Sypder only but can be answered by other professionals like Eng Aventure, Eng Abdulwastecx, Eng Afolabi, Architect Jude, Native doctor Egun, lol ha ha ha and many others that I can't remember their names, to please explain in full details. Most of these names have been around here for long, they are familiar with almost any terrain missioned above that's why I'm directing the question to them
Sand generally are better filling sand, the sand here means soil with no cohesion. They are better because they compact readily, they don't swell or expand when they are wet and don't undergo secondary consolidation.

Actually, the highlighted factor is a very important factor to consider when building in Nigeria. Also, we have our own peculiar problem especially in the coast like Lagos, PH and other coastal cities across the nation.

Sir can provide answers to the questions below respectively;
Then why is pile foundation used for skyscrapers as against strip foundation with shallow depth?
Why does a 3 storey building requires a deeper strip trench than a bungalow?
Why is the base of a 3 storey building deeper than that of a bungalow?

If u say width is necessary to spread load as height of building increases, i will understand. But saying height doesn't determine depth is what i will find hard to believe.
Even for water tank stand, i believe a tank stand serving a 3 storey building will require a much more depth than that serving a bungalow.
Okay, I will try to do justice to your question, sir.
Then why is pile foundation used for skyscrapers as against strip foundation with shallow depth?
Before I answer this question, I will like to explain that pile foundation is used for a skyscraper or high rise building because the load coming from the structure can't be safely carried using a shallow foundation like a raft. In cases where a raft can carry the supposed building, a shallow foundation is used.
There are cases where the bedrock is very close to the ground, or very stiff clay or granular soil with the right property to carry a high rise building is very close to the ground, in such cases, you don't need a pile foundation or very deep pile to carry the building.
In conclusion, The height of the building influence the loading intensity through both gravity and especially lateral (wind load) loading of the structure but is not the factor that determines the depth of the foundation.

Why does a 3 storey building requires a deeper strip trench than a bungalow?
It depends on what type of foundation and the nature of the building. If you are building a three storey building with load-bearing walls, where you will need to provide a strip footing for the walls, the strip only needs to get to the soil strata with adequate engineering properties to support the building. But, when you are building a frame structure ( the best type of structures for a three storey building) you only need your pad/isolated/combine footings to get the surface of the soil with adequate soil properties to carry the structure, while the strip footings for the partition walls will be of similar to that of a bungalow or can me omitted totally in favour of a grade beam/plinth beam.

Why is the base of a 3 storey building deeper than that of a bungalow?
This is not apple for apple comparison, It is deeper because it is heavier and most cases the type of foundation employed differs. A bungalow will most likely have a strip footing while a three storey building will most likely have a pad footing for good soil or raft foundation for poorer or expansive clay with large anticipated differential settlement (this foundation can be shallower than that of a bungalow) or in extreme cases a deep pile foundation
