segcymoor: No big deal. Required special design from the onset because one can't decided to adopt this method anyhow. It's advantage is actually to reduce the weight if done properly That is a combination of in-situ cast foundation cast frame (columns and beam on sloppy terrain) and precast pre stressed rib beam with hollow block former. It had many advantages like 1. Reduce concrete volume. 2. Faster and neater construction 3. Cheaper since less reinforcement is used and waste is reduce. 4. Better strength of slab since the prestress concrete are produced in the factory where better miss design and wet curing can be used |

I wanted a more profound description of the economic differences between the two countries. I had the impression that you know more. Turkey has more dynamic economy, Saudi Arabia is over dependent on petroleum and petro chemical products. Turkey is an industrialized country with larger working population |

Miscellaneous: Anytime I am dragged to this thread I always want to ask questions that has been bothering me. Now to the design engineers here:
1. Where does rectangular beams occur in a building structure? 2. Is it not possible to design an L or T-beam as a rectangular? & make provisions to cater for any shortcomings? That is a wonderful question my friend. Before we can know where rectangular beam occur in a structure, we need to know what is a rectangular beam? A rectangular beam is a beam with either a square section or rectangular section, where the slab doesn't act as part of the beam in a slab-beam monolithic construction. This normally happen to beam in hogging (negative moments), most especially along the support of a continuous beam or encasted beam. Rectangular beam occur to a section of a support reactions of continuous beam. L and T beam are flanged beam that occur at the mid span of monolithic slab-beam construction, where some portion of the slab act together with the beam undergoing sagging. L beam occurs at edge beam with only one slab while T beam occurs on a beam carrying two opposite slab. Normal rule of thumb is to design the beam at the support as rectangular and at the span as a flanged beam |

EgunMogaji: I agree with you.
I've always thought apprenticeship is a forgotten option in Nigeria, maybe it's the state of the economy.
While I especially try to give first dibs to guys that are starting out, they have to have tutored under seasoned leaders and earned their stripes, so to speak.
I just think that like those folks do, that one should open a thread, advertise on there and show your accomplishments. The problem with Apprenticeship when it relates to high skill based profession like civil engineering, building technology, architecture etc is the risk of learning from the wrong people. We have this problem in Nigeria where we don't follow the right procedures building codes, etc.... I have meant so many experienced builder/engineers that don't know the difference between primary and secondary beam, that can't differentiate between foliage beams and rectangular beams that don't know the difference between all the different type of foundation etc. |

lastpage: Spot-on ....at the bolded!
As it is nowadays, our Youths (especially our Yoruba Youths!) dont want to learn any form of handiwork! Most want 'easy money', are too arrogant and impatient ......not generally interested in 'tutoring' under any "Master".
Gone are the days when a young apprenticeship graduate can point to his "Master" under who he/she trained for some years, celebrated "freedom" and maintain that cordial relationship with the former boss.
Now, you hardly find that "neighbourhood", TRAINED Electrician, Plumber, Carpenter, Craft-Men, e.t.c..... especially those ones that decided that University/Higher Education is not for them. Most of them are either Okada/Maruwa Drivers, "Junction/Orita"-Touts, Omo-Onile, Bus-Stop Scavengers or outright nefarious characters like Armed Robbers,Kidnappers or Yahoo++!
I fear for the "future".
Lastpage! Nice observation sir.... That is where technical based education is needed. We need to review our educational system to make it work to our need. I ones learn carpentry and wood work from my father, it took me less than a year after my secondary school, it would make better sense if we include these technical trainings into our education sector. Building construction have shortage of artisan because we don't have good training Institute, if we make it compulsory to learn a skill base job like carpentry, masonry, iron bending, fabrication etc before finishing secondary school, the army of unemployment can be reduced greatly. |

msogunro: I see. So, no gap in the fencing for block pillars. One continous fence with blocks on both side every 10ft or so to create the pillar. Does that correctly describe it? There is a break every 10ft to have a very rigid fence. The pier in fence serve as a breaker to make the fence more rigid |

msogunro: Poured concrete pillar vs Block pillar for fencing
What are the advantages/disadvantages of both? I've been looking on the site at how fences are constructed and saw both methods being used without documented reasoning.
Your replies are much appreciated. Block pillars are more cost effective than concrete pillars of the same dimensions and standard mix (say M15 concrete strength). For six inches block fence, I prefer block pillars of section 450 x 450mm, filled with with concrete. With configuration like in the sketch below.

Just wondering if the Sultan can utter such a disgusting words how much more almajiris? The problem is the country is not that divide easily along North South line... We have too many overlaps and so many interest in between. Fulani heardsmen are also pain in the ass of farmers in Kebbi, Zamfara, Nassarawa, plateau, adamawa, Taraba etc, all these states are in the north. What we need in this country is serious federalism, where every state or region can control their resources, internal security etc. Nigeria is too religious for all the wrong reason, we have slow poke talking publicly and showing their ethnic sentiments all in the name of religion. The pastors, imam, bishop, emir etc are not helping matters, they are creating more division among the poor for their selfish need. |

Nasman: Good from our leader Fulani/Hausa/Northerners/Nigerian Muslims. It baffles me to any attack is being tag as Fulani herdsmen. The media is to be blame for this stereotype. We didn't mention Igbo Drug traffickers, Or Edo Ashewo Business, or Yoruba Internet Fraud. In every tribe there is the good and bad people. And my Fulani tribe is not excluded. Fulani heardsmen are terrorist who move around with weapon, rape women and children on their way... . They should be treated as such. Nigeria is such a lawless country where people have freedom to constitute nuisance to the public. Fulani heardsmen rob people along the highway, destroy fans, sack villages and all this dude can say is not to blame them. I don't know how made him spoke person for all Nigerian Muslim. To an average hausas fulanis, a Muslim political office older must be a an hausas fulanis, Muslim from South west don't suit their ethno-religious sentiment. I am a Muslim but detest marginalization, northanization, ethnic sentiment and imsentivity of buhari administration. The fulani that went killing innocent people in Benue, Nassarawa, enugu and other places must be brought to book |

Why is it that: 1. DPM sheets are not joined with a special masking tape on most projects, and 2. DPM is not used for footings ....... as per recommended best practice in USA?
Thanks! Qtn 1: we normally join our DPM with the nail because masking tape can't really join wet polythene. But it will be a good ideas to use masking tape for subsequent job. Qtn 2 : footings are funded on blinding of 75mm and cover of 50mm, these elements help to protect the footings reinforcement and rendered the need for DPM useless, except for areas with relative high water table |

Besides, I think you're in North Africa. Rain falls there once in 6months abi? Houses there are at almost zero risk.
PH, Lagos and some other parts experience all year round rainfall.. With accompanying Thunder strikes Majority of the population in those magribian (North Africa Mediterranean countries) lives long the cost where rainfall is very high, it is only in the interior where rain rarely falls. The risk of a house with no lightninh/thunder arrestor is very high there too |

Only God kills when the time reach I get really worried when I here statement like '' only God know when the time reach'' from a well traveled and enlightened Nigerian.... God don't kill and their is no time to die... We kill ourselves by not following health precautions, properly diagnosing our sickness, not building proper health care centers, dirty environment. I begin to wonder why maleria is the biggest killer in Nigeria. We have a country with life expectancy rate for men at 47 years and 5 3 years for women compare to more developed countries like Japan, Korea, US, Canada etc in upward of 80 years. The difference between us and them is they use their brain to make life better not by saying God is responsible for all their problem. |
