Demainman1: Call it whatever name you like. Omo onile is a Yoruba word. Igbo get name for their own extortion. The bottomline is you must pay the money before you break ground.
In my own case, those boys showed up immediately the saw activities on my land to tell me about the compulsory fees, failure to pay will lead to forceful disruption of activity. bros, landlords association and town development unions are not the equivalent of omo oniles, read vingeophysicist post below to understand what is omo onile. nkpor, onitsha, obosi and ikwerre youths are mostly lazy unemployed youths and criminals, you paid to have peace of mind not because it's the custom in idemmilli, many others would refuse to pay and they would back out if they notice that you have strong eyes. by the way, why should anybody advice you to buy land in nkpor? don't you know that every town have undesirable areas due to crime? |

Demainman1: Well, you probably have only built a house in your village so no point in arguing with you. I will try and dig up a thread where spyder880 settled with the land owners in the east and paste it for you to read
https://www.nairaland.com/1503621/construction-diary-block-6-flats/3
Read the comment entered at 10.57pm Dec 1, 2013 bros, that might be extortionist and illegal but it's not the same as omo onile where you pay for each stage of construction, i have a construction thread here of an ongoing work at onitsha, we paid about 300k in total fees before we even broke ground, it was painful then but when i saw the Landlord association installing concrete poles and connecting electricity in the area, i didn't feel too bad again, omo onile is an entirely different beast on it's own. |

tivta: I follow spyder880 and he has never complained of such in the east, what happens is that after you settle the village head and local government you are free to continue work (in my state sha and most parts of the East), it is deadly in the south south followed by the southwest... bros, there's nothing like omo onile in anambra, nri ani is a general term meaning to cook a meal for the neighborhood on the day they would witness the handover of the land, even here in the north, it's done not compulsorily but always advised to forestall possible future disputes. onitsha and nkpor youths have been trying very hard to introduce it but it has been largely unsuccessful with the obi of onitsha paying for radio announcements discouraging such practices with warning of possible sanctions. in rivers state, amaechi have stopped it especially in obiakpor local government where it was successfully introduced by the local youths. |

DISCUSS ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION guy park well joor, so you know that the thread is great yet you asked for it to be deleted because some people were called out for their misdeeds? the contract was conducted here in public so let it be sorted out in the public, anyway, how's your night? |

3strike: If you have more enemies than friends, it’s time to examine your mental attitude.
When your enemies outnumber your friends, the answer to the problem most likely resides within you. Ask yourself, Am I the kind of person I would like to have as a friend? Do I consider the feelings of others, or do I think only of myself? Do I try to find the good in others, or am I always finding fault? When something goes wrong, do I search for a solution to the problem, or do I look for someone to blame? In the answers to such questions, you may find the answer to the question: Why do I have more enemies than friends?

i once read the book, the Nigerian revolution and the biafran war and there was this account of the night of the northern counter coup, soldiers were summoned to the parade ground, eastern/igbo soldiers were singled out, loaded into military trucks supposedly to the railway station, along the way, the trucks were diverted to a bush, the soldiers were lined up and shot with a machine gun and then robbed of their belongings but among the soldiers was one who was not hit, he feigned dead even when be robbed of his wallet and wristwatch and later escaped, he eventually told the story to the author before he was apprehended at the makurdi bridge, shot and his corpse thrown into the river. i would want a civil war era game starting with this man's story except that he eventually had to lead a few others as they fight their way from kaduna to biafra.i have more ideas but let's stop here for the moment. |

i don't think it's a great idea to build for rent in Nigeria because it takes like forever to recoup your capital plus most Nigerians are thieves and liars who would like to take advantage of you regardless of how much is their annual income. those of you attacking igbo people should have courtesy to modify their posts to a more acceptable tone, i have more than enough stories of bad Yoruba tenants here in the north not to talk of their reputation for hygiene and noise making. |
