Are you telling me that the fact that he was not involved in 1966 coup can equally mean that he was not sympathetic to their cause?

bobbydbobo: Its so sad how sentimental, un-objective and ill informed some pple sound at times, even the educated ones among us.. A nation exists, and a pple within the nation decide to seceed which is a pure act of rebellion, and then u blame the Nation for tryn to bring back the rebels into the Union?? All thoe who served as military officers and leaders under biafra, should ordinarily have been put to death for a host of crimes like treason, conspiracy, felony, nd war crimes. War crimes doesn't have to be crimes u inflicted on others, it could b what u inflicted on ur own pple, which the leaders of biafra did. Gowon in his benevolence, and love for the union, like Abrahamlincoln in the American Civil war, declared "no victor, no vanquished". Pardoning those rebels. It is now uneducative to say that the nation commited a crime. And until u come to terms with the fact that Awolowo or the Yorubas neva commited an offence, it was Nigeria that was acting, a nation nd not this individuals.. Awolowo(rest in peace) made sure that all ibo assets in the SW were intat and payment to necessary quaters were made and backdated. Its so funny how some fore fathers sumwhere hav altered history for their mischievous reasons and have stired up strife btw every1.. U kip talkin abt Awolowo being the betrayer, have u forgotten so soon that Zik just in a bid to spite Awolowo, after both reached an agreement and Awo even decided to b his vice, went to meet balewa, to spite Awo and both took the reins of power. Awolowo, all thru is still refered to as the best president nigeria neva had, wonder y in his death, the Germans and Americans scrambled to have his brain taken to b understudied in their lab abroad, which was declined by his family. Ojukwu(rest in peace) all his life was grateful to Nigeria for pardoning him for all his crimes. It is wrong to come here and assert that bringing a set of rebels back into the fold is a crime. Rather ,it was the other way round
That's good! But your history teacher forgot to tell you that Awo secretly sent Akintola to negotiate with Balewa to form a coalition government while he was in active negotiation with Zik.

Katsumoto: Do people organize coups to install individuals who are not sympathetic to their cause or share their pains? There is a reward or punishment for executing a coup.
Interesting. . .what evidence do you have to declare that Awolowo is not sympathetic to their cause?
HealthRe: Medical Recall by ACM10:
centje: A 31 year old male, who had fracture of both right radius and ulnar. He discontinued management because of financial issues. But later came back with deformity of the right forearm and malunion as shown in the x-ray.

What are the treatment options for this patient?
What should be done for this patient is corrective osteotomy. From the x-ray photos, you can see that there is an exuberant callus formation and malunion at the fracture site. Corrective osteotomy involves "re-creating" the initial fracture surgically, chipping out the useless callus, repositioning of the bone. Then hold it fast with an implant. Then allow a time interval of 3 weeks before light mobilization with the aid of clutches. The patient should also be placed on antibiotics and analgesic cover post-op. Don't forget fluid management. Also remember to group and crossmatch blood before the surgery, then make 4 units available since the area is know to be richly supplied and bled a lot during surgery.

Aigbofa: He stood up against a bully, defended your votes when Ekenedili Chuckwu was a more attractive option to some people.
I'm lost here. How did he defend my vote from the borders of Benin republic disguised as a local cocoa farmer? Even Mandela wasn't amused when he famously told him that he did not flee South Africa in the face of oppression. Prof Achebe did not flee Nigeria in the face of oppression. He went to America to rub mind with the best on the continent. He went to America for fresher challenge. He distinguished himself in the field of Literature. Contributed to the intellectual development of Africa. Sweated it out in the lecture halls of UNN. What did Abiola achieve? Polygamy? Sexual recklessness? Embezzlement of public funds? Funding of coup d' etat? What did he achieve??

Am not a tribalist. Infact my tribe is immaterial here. But I wanted to respond to the above questions thinking it was an honest inquiry until I came to the bolded. It shows your questions panders on tibalism than intellectualism.

At any rate let me ask you this: Does it mean that people that has distinguished themselves in their various areas of endeavors must have similar life experiences before they are placed in the same pedestal? Hmmmmmm!
The fabric of this country has been so destroyed by tribalism. It is a futile exercise to engage anyone here on intellectual discussion.
PoliticsRe: Name National Library After Achebe: Reps To FG by ACM10: 11:26am On Mar 27, 2013
ndu_chucks: I don't believe that Achebe himself would have appreciated this honour given that he rejected all national honours which were accorded to him when he was alive. They can go and immortalize Achebe in Anambra state if they wish, The senators should allow the man to rest in peace.
Mr. you lied that Prof Achebe used the term "Ibo" in his book. The instances he used "Ibo" was when he quoted other sources.
You have started your distortion of facts again. Achebe accepted his first national honour taking into consideration that Nigeria is not perfect and has room for improvement, but rejected later awards in 2003 and 2001 as a form of protest. His action is typical of an Igboman with integrity. 46yrs ago, Dr. Akanu Ibiam did the same to the Britist royalties on account of their support for genocide in Nigeria.

Below is your lie and my response. . .

ndu_chucks: Why must you lie here, your honest discussion was what was expected of you.

You, of all people should have read Achebe's There Was A Country, published a few months ago, and if you have not, then you are very lazy and one must ask what the basis of your defense of Achebe was when he was under the heat for the publication.

Her's what I found in the said book:

Page 231 ….to pursue total and unconditional victory and by fear of the Ibo people that surrender means whole sale atrocities and genocide…

Page 274…large extent, with natural ethnic divisions. Notably, the East would be divided in such a way that the oil reserves would be located in states without an Ibo majority…

The word Ibo is found in the same book on Pages 289, 296, 313, 315, etc etc.
You are in fact the most daring and shameless liar that I've encountered on this forum. Prof Achebe used "Igbo" all through the book. The instances he made metion of "Ibo" was when he quoted other sources. You are taking advantage of the fact that none of us has read the book. Your cup has filled up.

KenGali: I think I understand your problem Mr. Harem. Stems from not having seen the doors of the University.

Let me help you, improving better life of an average Nigeria extends beyond infrastructure. Their is such a thing called intellectual development. Achebe contributed greatly to the intellectual development of the majority of Nigerian students by providing them a world class intellectual fodder. Not just for Nigerians, but to the world actually. same as the likes of Charlse Dickens, whose Oliver Twist you must have read.
For the minority African and Nigerians who have to deal withe the rest of the world, He created a great perspective for that interaction on elevated footing in the work, Things Fall Apart.
Thank you.
Why are you wasting your time with this dude. He is obviously blinded by tribalism and bigotry.
The same person that will be quick to parrot Awolowo's free education as his greatest achievement will readily dismiss Achebe's contribution as non-achievement. The man who lectured in Nigeria tertiary institution for decades under the harshest condition did not contribute anything to Nigeria's development. SMH.

facideume: @OP,
I need not join the bandwagon in unleashing some venomous vituperations against your person. I believe you have fully received a lot of "insults" as you had rightly expected and anticipated. Your post totally stinks of abysmal ignorance of the person of Professor "Chinua Achebe" such that the only thing you made reference to was a book (Things Fall Apart) he wrote more than 45 years ago which has received numerous awards, and also translated into many major languages all over the world. I believe you first read the book as a teenager in secondary school, if i am not mistaken.

You are totally bereft of his professional experience and numerous positions in which he worked for the Nigerian state before the civil war started in 1967. Do you also know the capacities in which he continued to work for the Biafran nation after he fled from Lagos to save his life and that of his family, while working in a government establishment? Do you know the diplomatic missions he embarked upon for Biafra during that war? Do you know who was behind the famous Ahiara Declaration?

I believe Professor Chinua Achebe have rightly responded to pessimistic people like you in his recent book "There was a Country" but i also know that your utter resistance to knowledge, abysmal ignorance, and paralyzed sense of research will not let you read that book. In the same book, he answered his reason for rejecting the awards. Have you read his book "Problem with Nigeria"? A person who has not worked for Nigeria in different capacities cannot write an insightful and detailed book of that nature which continues to be relevant in modern day, Nigeria. In fact, you are part of the "problem with Nigeria" in the way and manner you have created this post. Why do you think he was given those awards that he vehemently rejected? Do you think it was only because of his literary works? The same amount of time you spent on the internet or on Nairaland typing this silly, annoying and provocative post would have been well invested on Google search about the highly respected Professor Chinua Achebe. I am not also in doubt that if anything happens to Professor Wole Soyinka tomorrow (God forbid) that someone like you won't come here to create similar post.
Reading maketh a man...even if you had the worst teachers in school due to the fallen standard of education in Nigeria you must learn to read! read!! read!!! SMH
The bolded summarizes the OP. They forgot that Achebe lectured in the department of General Studies of UNN and later became the professor of English and the HOD. Later was made an emeritus professor. The OP's question was akin to asking for the contribution of teachers to the national development. Achebe also worked as an administrator in Nigeria's civil service. I'm afraid that Nairaland has become an avenue for people to bare their ignorance and intellectual laziness.

There was a coup and all the igbo tribal leaders were mysteriously missing right? Michael Okpara was missing, Nnamdi Azikwe was missing, Aguyi Ironsi that you lot said was among those marked for death was somehow somehow missed and later became the head of state and his first assignment was to truncate the regional system of government in order to make you rule and dominate others? Did you igbos mocked the northerners or not, after killing their leaders? Did igbo musicians released musical album celebrating the death of Tafawa Balewa and Sardauna, depicting them as cowards in core northern states or not? Did Major chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu granted an interview describing how he shot Sardauna point blank or not? Did Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu said Sardauna ran and hid himself among women and children poking fun after killing one of the most revered northern leader in cold blood or not? You went on your planned ethnic cleansing, spilling the blood of the innocent souls and called revolution, I guess the definition of revolution forbade killing of igbos right? Ofcourse, na only igbos get sense pass.

When asked about his relationship with Aguyi ironsi, did he( chukwuma Nzeogwu) said Ironsi is " my boss" and am working with him or not? You igbos can continue repeating these lies thinking that one day some people will accept it as truth. Was Ifeajuna reporting to zik or not? Why did Aguyi Ironsi refused to court marshal the igbo coup plotters months after the incident? Instead of punishing the coup plotters, did Aguyi Ironsi not transferred them to east or not? Why did Chinua Achebe refused publishing the manuscript of Ifeajuna in his bigoted lies called "There was a country?"

Here is a man, that is widely regarded as literary giant telling us bare faced lies that he lost the manuscript handed to him by Ifeajuna explaining everything about the coup. If you like, write more lies but it won't change the fact that igbo power thirsty men went on killing every other person to pave way for their tribes men to rule and dominate others.

The only evidence you have is from a murderer who knows the consequences of what he did.
This is like asking a murderer to deliver the judgement in his own trial.
I always knew that you are brain-damaged. The onus is not on me to provide an evidence on why Fajuyi was as good target as Ironsi. January coup was a plan developed by igbos to dominate and rule over Nigerians by force. The coup was carefully planned to install igbo man as president via bloodshed. The 5 igbo majors were pawns used by Zik to pave way for him after eliminating Sardauna, Tafawa Balewa, Akintola and others. Luckily, Awo was in prison courtesy of zik's treachery and the sudden carving out of Midwest to reduce the influence of the southwest.

When they realised that zik, a civilian can't hold on, after the northerners simultaneous rejection and request for the heads of the coup plotters, in order words when they realised that the coup had failed they went for plan B by making aguyi ironsi the president. This singular act and the promulgation of the decree 34 by ironsi to usher in a central government sacrificing the regional system to satisfy their greed of ruling and dominating others, destroyed Nigeria. First we had 3 regions and the competition was very healthy amongst the regions. when zik was denied ruling the western region, he connived with Tafawa Balewa led NPC to carved out Midwest from southwest, after sending awo to prison over trumped up charges.

In trying to dominate Nigeria by force, they later went on to eliminate other regional leaders, leaving theirs like Opkara. Ademolegun with his pregnant wife, Sodeinde, Akintola were all murdered by igbo coup plotters. Fani Kayode was lucky to be alive after the igbo coup plotters faced resistance in Lagos. These are the finest Yoruba gentlemen of that era murdered by igbos in cold blood. Even after destroying southwestern political power house, few months later Fajuyi refused to let T.Y Danjuma take IRONSI alone, an option was given to him to either stick around and die with IRONSI or run away, he stayed even when he knew he was going to die.

But look at the mischievous OP changing the topic in his bit to make us fight the northerners. We are not going to fight the northerners until there is an open declaration of war. For now, we know our enemies, those planning to see our down falls, those going around cyber world attacking our most revered leader, those wishing to take over Lagos, those planning to make us cry, those wishing Tsunami can wipe out southwest.

Katsumoto: Dede1

The problem with you is that you refuse to research accurately preferring hearsay. I provided a book which lists all the interviews following that coup. The Nigerian Civil War, 1967-1970: history and reminiscences (Momoh)

Please answer the question - why was Fajuyi as good a target as Ironsi?
Quoting Lt. Walbe from the same book. . .

According to Lt Walbe
Lt Walbe: As far as I am concerned it was a lie(Yoruba publications). We arrested him as we arrested Ironsi. We suspected him of being party to the January coup. You remember the Battle Group Course which was held at Abeokuta . . . Fajuyi was Commander of the Battle Group course. He ran the course. All those who took part in the January coup were those who had taken part in that course. It gave us the impression that the Battle Course was arranged for the January Coup, so he had to suffer it too. I am sorry about that but that is the nature of the life of the military man
PoliticsRe: Real Story On How Lt.col Fajuyi Was Killed By Danjuma & The Northern Coupists by ACM10: 8:46pm On Mar 23, 2013
Katsumoto: Nwankwo gave a summary of the events and left out some details.

1. Fajuyi was not arrested after he talked with Danjuma the first time. According to Danjuma, Fajuyi extracted a promise from Danjuma not to harm Ironsi. Danjuma told Fajuyi that they were there to arrest Ironsi. When the plotters were arguing with Ironsi about his inactions after the January coup, Fajuyi was still a mediator. It was during this argument that Nwankwo pulled a gun on Danjuma and the five other Northerners present directed their guns at Nwankwo.

2. When Gowon called the government house to warn Fajuyi and Ironsi about the coup, Danjuma answered the phone. This was a side house and not the main house. When Gowon asked Danjuma what was going on, Danjuma said he was there to arrest Ironsi. Again, no mention of Fajuyi.

3. Fajuyi was not arrested, charged, or had his name cited in any coup plotting material. I can not say for certain whether he was involved or not but it is quite possible that his name was slandered after his death. Afterall, the allegations only surfaced after his death.

All sources agree on the above facts. The stories start to change when Fajuyi, Ironsi and Nwankwo are bundled into a truck. Some sources claimed Danjuma walked back to the barracks while others place him at the scene of the killings. The question is, why were there different accounts after Ironsi and Fajuyi were killed? For one, the interview given by Danjuma to Army investigators (General Momoh - The Nigerian Civil War, 1967-1970.) contradicts that given by Walbe to Professor Elaigwu (Gowon: The Biography of a Soldier-Statesman). Walbe admits he was present when Ironsi and Fajuyi were killed but was silent about whether Danjuma was also there.

My opinion
Danjuma, Murtala and the other plotters could not justify the killing of an innocent man to his people and chose to malign his name by alleging that he was part of the plot. This is pure conjecture without facts. If there is no hard proof linking Fajuyi to the Jan 66 coup, then the only reasonable explanation is that he must have offered to die alongside Ironsi so as not to have the sin of complicity on his head. Or he may have been killed just because he was with Ironsi and the plotters did not want to leave a high ranking military officer as a witness. If Fajuyi was killed because it was alleged he knew about the January, then why weren't Gowon and Ojukwu also killed since it was alleged they also knew about the January coup?
Why must you lie? Does it make you sleep at night? Anytime you are busted on one lie in one thread you will pop up on another thread with a new spin on your lies. Read below an excerpt from the biography of Gowon written by professor Isawa Elaigwu.

Below is an excerpt from the book 'Gowon' by J. Isawa Elaigwu. You can find it on page 65.

Isawa Elaigwu: On 29th July, Lt Walbe and Major Danjuma were in effective contact at the State House after the change of guards. It was then that both officers walked up to Ironsi, saluted, and brought both Ironsi and Fajuyi downstairs. they were handed over to Lt Walbe(by Major Danjuma) to take charge. Lt Walbe and his troops took the two men to an area of bush at Ibadan where they subjected Ironsi to questions about the January coup and the Northern leaders and officers who died then. From the accounts of those who were there, Ironsi played the part of a very good soldier. Contrary to many publications suggesting that he made confessions, there seem to be no evidence of such confessions.
Similarly there was no evidence that Fajuyi was killed because he interceded for his host or that he refused to 'abandon his guest,' as reported by some publications. He was reported to have been very scared, and had been one of those marked down for elimination. By the time Major Akahan phoned Gowon in Lagos and received instructions to ensure that nothing happened to Ironsi, it was late. Even Major Akahan and Major Danjuma(then at Ibadan) had lost control over their boys.
Does the bolded sound familiar?
