No no no. He bought that car not to surprise but spite me! Why would he have to go all length to prove a point? Meaning he still harbours the pain of the past.
Did he tell you that?

What if it was meant to be a surprise and genuinely wants you to be happy for him.

I know a guy who has 3 cars but had a dream car in mind. When he got enough money, he took along his friend to go car window shopping. He bargained on the car he wanted and the friend wondered whether he was crazy. They left, the next day he went back and paid in full for the car without his friend or wife knowing. He showed up at his wife's place of work with his usual driving style, she saw his dream car, saw his driving style and her heart started pounding knowing who her hubby is. He didnt step out of the car but she left he seat heading to the car. Their dream car has arrived at last. Was she angry that he didnt plan witt her? No, never.

If you really do love your guy, you would see the car as our car not a spitefull item.

My own story. I dated a girl, it was about her birthday and she wanted to celebrate. Big sums of money doesnt come to me often but now i had just gotten a good chunk of money say 1m. Now i can afford to buy a car that i so much desired. Unfortunately, my 200k rent is expiring next month and my sister's 200k sch fees was due soon. Once i take out this sums, my car project is no longer feasible. I was confused so i sought for advise from my girl, she told me to drop the car since i drive an office vehicle. My problem with her advise was she wanted her birthday so much she doesnt mind i forfeit the car. After paying my rent and sis sch fees, i will be left with too much money in my account that she will just rub my back anytime she needed money. If i buy the car, i will struggle for months repaying debts for my rent and sis fees and in that case, she wont be seeing any cash from me and her birthday will be reduced to home cooked rice and chicken with no cake. She wanted whats best for her. I broke off with her same week, bought my car, paid my rent and paid my sis fees. Thank God there were no birthdays or clubbing with her friends on my bill.

The moral of my story is, you are watching your back too often that you cant see ahead. That means you sound selfish. Secondly, you are insecure from you own past actions.

If you really see his new car as an attempt to spite you, your rship is heading for the rocks.

I need to understand your frame of mind so I get you correctly in your own word. So if subsidy is removed what do you think is your benefit as a motorist in Nigeria and do U think fuel will be cheaper or higher?
As a motorist, i wouldnt mind if i get fuel for free. The economist will say its impossible to get it free.

My point was to a person who asked, "is it not the subsidy GEJ tried to remove years back and was seriously critisized". He went further to say fuel is still sold as expensive as 140 in the locations he listed.

My point exactly was, GEJ made no arrangements for subsidy removal inflation effect on ordinary Nigerians. Besides, his government wasnt trusted with the savings from the removal. In other words, we would suffer while corrupt people get richer.

Buhari has given people hope that there will be accountability while we will not suffer. Its a win win situation now but GEJ's plan was a lose lose situation being that we lose by buying fuel more expensive while saving for looters to cart away. The partial removal by GEJ led to sure-p which actually became a looting ground. Our guess of what would have happened was right.

With the present arrangrment the worst that could happen is the win-lose scenerio. We win as long as pump price remains low but may win or lose when the subsidy savings are utilised well or looted.

Then you should take I to account you ha e less cars in that areas so demand is low.
Before that filling started getting supply which i filled my tank, i bought fuel in this same town at 160, 165, 170 and 175 before christmas.

While in kaduna, i had to travel from the town to Kujama to buy fuel at N145.

What am saying is there is fuel now.

For south south states, i have lived in Akwa Ibom and even when there was no scarcity, their pump price is usually higher than the official price on most private markerters. They are always the first to hike prices in anticipation to fuel scarcity. Once any part of the industry plans a strike, they hoard and hike immediately. I want to believe Northern marketers are less greedy.

In Enugu, N140/litre

All these between 25/12/2015 and 2/1/2016. Please, where is your village?
I and my family are on holiday at Kafanchan, Jema'a LGA, Kaduna state.

I filled my empty take on 29th Dec with N5,500 at Conoil. On 31st Dec i filled my mum's car and our sumec gen set after spending 20mins on queue.

2 other stations sell at 97 and others 105, 110 and even 120. On the 1st Jan, almost all stations were selling fuel.

Besides, there is NNPC mega station in Samaru-kataf, Zangon-Kataf LGA 25km away from Kafanchan. I have the option of going there instead of buying N120/L.

Thats because subsidy has been removed. Imagine if they pay N45 subsidy now, pump price will be N41.50k.

Dont forget, we buy the fuel from other countries. We pay shipping and other charges before it gets to our shores. Also, we transport with trucks instead of pipelines which is cheaper. Lets not forget that filling stations produce their own electricity for pumps at a price which must all be included in the final pump price.

Where would you rather be? Church, Home or Bar?

I have mixed feelings of the right place to be especially among the first two.

I have a wife and 2 little children. Our house help traveled to her village to be with her parents. So whatever i do, someone has to watch the children, either me or wifey.

If i go to church, i must go alone. At home, we are all together though the children are fast asleep already. The bar, i have friends that i could join or call to join me.

Most previous years i spent at a particular worship center which usually host a lot of christians from all denominations who come from all states of Nigeria. The place overflows on this night every year with VVIP to VIP and the commons like me.

I am definitly not going to the bar but i am lost on whether to sit with my wife at home and offer our thanksgiving and worship prayers to God or go out alone and do the same thing separately.

I usually worship God, ask for forgiveness for all wrongs during the year, thank him for being alive through the year, ask his grace for the new year and present him my desires and ambition for the newyear.

In the next 30 mins, i must decide to go to the center or pray at home.

It would be nice if Seun moves this to fp so we can have quick responces.

My personal issues with Benz.

The first embarassing thing about Benz is the way our mechanics work the fan to sound like an approaching hovercraft even blowing dust from underneath the engine bay. Those cars can be loud ehn. When i buy Benz, the mechanic that does that to my car will certainly see a side of me most people have not seen.

Secondly, that very unpredictable moment that your Benz key will suddenly make you wonder if there was foul play. Every one i know who owns Benz with an infrared key has experienced this embarassing moment. My sister's boyfriend had his in front of our house when he came to drop her one day. The car slept right there. You drove your, parked and turned of the engine. Left for few minutes and back but the car wont start for no obvious reason. The ignorant mechanic will so mess with your car from the fuel pump to your fuse box but nothing will work untill a programmer is summoned. He will tell you you must buy a new key for 50k and pay for programming for another 50k. Thats one reason am scared of Benz.

Lastly, we learned the hard way when speed limiter caused us to sleep in Lokoja on our trip from Uyo to Kaduna one time using a Benz ML. Reason was there was one bad ABS which failed on the way. Because of inactive ABS, the car limited speed to less than 60km/hr. Thats how a 1 day trip became a 2 day frustrating trip. I think that there are more likely parts to break down and make one sleep over on a planned trip using Benz than a Jap in class of Honda or Toyota.

If 2 cars a Benz and a Toyota take off from Maiduguri to Lagos, a Toyota has a better percentage chance to get there as planned. When japs break down, they get to the next town fighting hard but Benz will crawl and curse if not stall.

Even with their big engines, Benz fall my hand when it comes to acceleration from 0. Every one knows that the 1st 10secs or a race is very critical. Exception is that Hussein Bolt was never good at starting.

Congratulations on the new ride op.

I BEG TO DISAGREE with u on this one my bro. I dnt thinks the maint required light is set to any mileage. There's a system in d car dat detects when the oil no longer has its required viscosity and thats when the light comes on. Check this .....I was using milemaster 5w20 and about 2500 miles the maint required light came on, when I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 the maint required light only comes on when I have exceeded 5000 miles or more.
What ever i say on cars may not be 100% correct but may have considerable percentage of truth. Probably thats why i mentioned my type of car. Other cars i know up to 2008 Honda accord operate in the same way but i did read some where about some form of adjustment by the ECU to the oil life in recent cars. These adjustments have nothing to do with a viscosity sensor like you claimed. I am not aware of any oil viscosity sensor in cars. Please confirm if you are sure it exist.

Older cars with oil life or maintenance minder are based on purely mileage counting just like in my car. On these cars service manuals encourages those with harsh driving conditons to service their cars sooner. So newer cars are designed to automatically monitor your driving style and adjust the oil life by means of normal car sensors such as temperature, speed, engine revolution, engine load etc. The history of these sensors is what the ecu uses to adjust the oil life from the oil life that would have been if relied on mileage.

Irrespective of type of oil, my maintenance re'qrd light starts flashing at about 7,000miles.

So mi oga does this double wall need to be full height?

Trust me, your slope aint that bad. A slope can be bad that the drawing plans have to be changed to accomodate staircases or basement.

My advise on the wall, fill the block holes and the gap between the walls with lean concrete.

I addition, increase the wall from the L shape you planned to U. This will give the high side of the wall more stability.

These are flush doors I believe. At 9k you need to watch the quality. Imported Italian ones cost b/w 40 to 45k while locally made ones with marine wood etc and of very good quality is also in same range.
The 9k ones are good to go for me depending on location of use.

My friend's house has these doors as internal doors. One has gone bad only because it is in constant contact with water as bathroom door. He uses shower so the bottom part of the door has peeled off. The lower frame wood also came out. Seem like they put the door together will only glue. Others look pretty solid.

However, his doors were bought at 9k without frame and frames were bought separate. I wont mind if these doors come with architrave frame. I will use it internally but use PVC doors in bathrooms. Externally, steel doors are better and turkey preferable/affordable.

My pain is the fact that U have spent 150k on a car that is worth 300k. Mine is presently in the Market for 300k and everything works fine.
I was shocked to see he spent that much a car that old without success. The engine goes for like 40k in abj and gear box in like sum.

Just like he has been told before, he probably bought a more recent engine probably from 98-2000 accord.

I remember when our gear box of this same car gave upx, mechanics were calling it Honda Hala engine and gear box. I kept correcting them but they all insisted telling me that am a novice. They claimed 90-98 accord have the same engine and gear box.

Am sure they installed a 90-92 accord gear in the 96 accord, we never enjoyed the car thereafter.

@adanny01 @EgunMogaji @brabus

If he wanted to go the beam way, I think he should have done that after about 4 courses then placing the last course of block. Now, cost wise, (carpentry, concrete work) the beam will have to go around the whole perimeter of this mammoth building.

Why do that when you can just have 4-5 courses of blocks to support a 6 course wall? About the Domino effect, there's usually a leg space (about 100mm or less) between the supporting wall and main wall. This allows any pressure from the expansion of clay to be absorbed before reaching the main wall. Fill this space with sharpsand.

This is why I advocate creating panels whenever there is a large unpartitioned portion. Helps to hold the main walls together.

@egunmogaji Just saw your mention. Was on my whole festivities "shebang"
He doesnt have to go round. Like i said, tie beams around the anticipated stressed area will do.

Secondly, a retaining wall feels intense lateral earth pressure at its heel. The longer the foot the better for the wall. The second wall usually serves as additional heel to the main wall. Putting sand or allowing independent movement of the walls means the 2 of them are structurally independent which is pointless. You dont want the added wall to take all the stresses alone so you tie them together by pouring lean concrete between them making them one composite structural wall with increased footing to stand the earth pressure. They say 2 heads are better than 1.

However, tie beams at the top takes more than half the overturning stresses from the heel to the beam. It is more effective than adding more footing to the wall. See sketch below. The beam is a more direct and opposing force to the lateral earth pressure so it will be a better option anyday anytime.

I recognize the modification.

If I tied those 5 which is now actually 7, won't that raise that section in relation to the rest of the foundation?

Continued thanks.
You will have to remove the last course for the section you want to tie with a beam.

Only concern is that the size of the beam will be 9x10". That is pretty large but so because its top level has to match with the rest of the foundation. It just means more concrete. If the beam where to go round the perimeter 9x6" beam would have sufficed.

You made valid points and I personally agree with you but let me to show you more of the area in question. Also, that I'm doing it doesn't mean that I believe that the wall will fail but just to apeace site workers at a negligible cost to me.

The area that the wall is holding back is an unbroken 32 feet by 16 feet. See attached. Red shows subject area, yellow shows suggested double wall.

As stated before if I wasn't sitting at my desk 8,000 miles away and only after seeing the lot maybe 5 times then underestimating the slope, I would have opted for an elevated bungalow and used the slope as underground parking. Part of life lesson and I assure all that it will never happen again for sizzles grin

Thanks for your time.

Disclaimer: My Architect and builder did nothing wrong and I own this issue fully as the General Contractor.

https://villageheadmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/DWall.png
The sketch explains a lot. The proposal is minimal and may serve just right even though the best would have been the beams but for its cost.

If you will do this, do it right. That entails filling the block holes and the space between the two walls with lean concrete. Broken blocks and stones are not allowed.

I advise you calculate and compare the cost of the 2 methods and if close, chose the beam unless your budget limits you.

My skepticism with the double wall you proposed is that the new wall will not be properly braced and when lateral forces of the backfill acts on it, its own weight (dead load) may act as a load on the main walls. Imagine it like 2 upright Diminoes with one leaning on the other, with no support both will go down. In this case, you should consider tie beams for the portions you proposed double wall as a better, safer and probably cheaper option.

Modification:
On the right bigger portion with proposed 32 x 16ft wall, i see 5 columns. If you tie those 5 beams, it will stabilize that portion more that a double wall. The other side has just 2, but i prefer placing a beam there than a new wall.

I completely agree with you Mr. Brabus.

Double wall and capping beam was used at my project at Lugbe, Abuja. The approach portion of the building was about 6-7 coaches high due to the slopy terrain of the site and the closeness to a small stream, so we used a double wall on all the front perimeter, part of the left and right side perimeter and some internal walls, and then tied the columns in foundation with a capping beam on top of the double wall. We also filled the double walls with weak concrete & broken blocks.

It made the foundation cost much more but just like you said, its better to get it right from the onset than doing maintenance/corrective measures later.
I have the view that double wall is not necessary for a foundation of a house especially when the depth of fill is less than 2m. Tie-beams at every 1m height of foundation is more than enough to brace the foundation against lateral backfill forces.

My reason is based on professional judgement. The volume of backfill for a house which has partitions will be different from the same wall height used as a retaining wall for a filling station or parking lot. Therefore the house will experience less pressure on the wall than if used for other uses without internal partitions. Partition foundation walls are linked so will also act as assisting retaining walls to the external walls that faces most of the lateral forces. If the foundation in question had no internal partitions, i would agree that a double wall could serve as insurance but in this case, its absolutely unnecessary and i regard it as planned waste of effort.

This view can be proven with structural calculations if i put effort to it. Its not that you will use a sheep foot compactor on the house, will you?

I will do my best to ensure that the road in front is never put in but I make aft about 6 coaches higher than the existing road at my lowest point. I've now watched all the episodes and have now moved to Grand Design Australia and also Restoration Homes.

I thought I saw staircase in your drawings? Your foundation seems like it's for a two story house. I mean ground floor plus one floor above.
From the very obvious high difference in slope within your lot looking at the pic you shared, you will never have to worry about any flood. That kind of area will hardly ever experience flood as long as proper drainage is provided. Even if you step down the low side of your foundation below ground level and even if the road is higher than your ground floor, it is still very easy to control runoff water with that kind of slope.

I would not sweat. Just tie your columns with a beam before backfill and you are good to go.

#3: thanks sir, was concerned really about maintenance. someone said only a plumber can open the top flush while a DIY can do simple maintenance on the side flush
Thanks sir.
There are different mixers applicable to different uses.
1. Basin mixer - usually used in the hand wash basin or laundry basin
2. Kitchen sink mixer - this comes sometimes with longer pipes
3. Bath tub mixer
4. Shower mixer
The bath tub and shower mixers some times have 2 or more interchangeable water outlets. So you can use a hand shower or over head mixer or drain pipe to collect water in a bucket/tub.

The other thing you were asking of that Hajji posted its picture but forgot its name is called SHATTAF valve.

Lastly, i prefer the top flush than the side flush because the side flush is more fragile and more prone to damage. Also, the top flush would save more water because it has 2 buttons one is for complete flush and the other for partial flush that stops once it is released. One button is good for poo and the other good for pee saving some water that would have been wasted on little pee using complete flush.

It depends.....

You need to have at the last oil change used Toyota recommended oil or equivalent and the 'Maint' light reset for the counter to be valid.

The light works with your mileage counter which is preset to a particular distance traveled after reset. Say 10,000miles is the 'Maint' light preset distance to stay on and 7,500miles to start flashing, that may have been set with the consideration that the car will be serviced with Toyota motor oil as recommended or its equivalent. Toyota motor oil is say synthetic 5w30 but when you use oil such as Mobil XHP or Total Quartz 5000 which are common and mineral 20w50, oil life counter is no longer valid.

What i do.....

My car 2003 Honda accord has Honda Motor oil as recommended and Maint re'qrd light set to flash at about 7,000miles and stay on at 7,500miles. Since that oil is hardly affordable and the engine is aged with leakages, i have been using Mobil XHP recently. My research shows 3,500miles is appropriate for it. So on oil change i take a pic of the mileage as record then add 3,500 to gjve me next due oil change. At that next oil change, i dont reset the counter, so after that the next due oil change is exactly when 'Maint r'qrd' light starts flashing. That means i change oil mid way of my Maint re'qrd counter.

You can keep a log, thats the best way to go if you are not using recommended oil.

From where i come from kitchen wares, furniture and food stuff for a new couple is usually provided by bride's family to the level they can afford. Traditionally, the reason is because a new bride is supposed to be shy and cannot resort to borrowing anything from her inlaws atleast to such a time they become very familiar usually after birth. Bride can share specific items to her relatives who can afford it. In particular, the brides father is responsible for their bed.

Some years ago, my cousin married a guy from another state, the guy was able to build a house. My uncle furnished it to even the DSTV subscription for a year. My uncle could afford it and its a thing of pride for the brides family as a parting gift.

However, this is no excuse for any bride not to make her own arrangements especially knowing the family she comes from. That means no working bride can tell her groom months before their wedding that kitchen wares is the grooms responsibilty. Its a very direct message that she is not planning to settle anytime soon or doesnt plan to be a life companion to the groom.
